Cardiac Organoid Technology And Computational Processing Of Cardiac Physiology For Advanced Drug Screening Applications, Plansky Hoang Dec 2020

Cardiac Organoid Technology And Computational Processing Of Cardiac Physiology For Advanced Drug Screening Applications, Plansky Hoang

Dissertations - ALL

Stem cell technology has gained considerable recognition since its inception to advance disease modeling and drug screening. This is especially true for tissues that are difficult to study due to tissue sensitivity and limited regenerative capacity, such as the heart. Previous work in stem cell-derived cardiac tissue has exploited how we can engineer biologically functional heart tissue by providing the appropriate external stimuli to facilitate tissue development. The goal of this dissertation is to explore the potentials of stem cell cardiac organoid models to recapitulate heart development and implement analytical computational tools to study cardiac physiology. These new tools were …

Amplifier Architectures For Wireless Communication Systems, Mehmet Kok Dec 2020

Amplifier Architectures For Wireless Communication Systems, Mehmet Kok

Dissertations - ALL

Ever-increasing demand in modern wireless communication systems leads researchers to focus on design challenges on one of the main components of RF transmitters and receivers, namely amplifiers. On the transmitter side, enhanced efficiency and broader bandwidth over single and multiple bands on power amplifiers will help to have superior performance in communication systems. On the other hand, for the receiver side, having low noise and high gain will be necessary to ensure good quality transmission over such systems. In light of these considerations, a unique approach in design methodologies are studied with low noise amplifiers (LNAs) for RF receivers and …

Characterization Of Crystalline Pigments With Low-Frequency Vibrational Spectroscopy And Solid-State Density Functional Theory, Elyse M. Kleist Dec 2020

Characterization Of Crystalline Pigments With Low-Frequency Vibrational Spectroscopy And Solid-State Density Functional Theory, Elyse M. Kleist

Dissertations - ALL

Although historical pigments are seldom found in the modern artist’s palette, their characterization is a critical aspect of designing effective conservation and restoration protocols, establishing provenance, and detecting forgeries. Ideal characterization methods are nondestructive, noninvasive, and able to distinguish between pure and mixed pigment samples. Spectroscopic techniques are commonly used to identify pigment composition because of their non-ionizing nature, rapid acquisition times, and safety. Unfortunately, the majority of these methods have difficulty distinguishing between pigments with similar chemical and physical properties. Recent advancements in instrument technology have increased the broader availability of terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) and low-frequency Raman spectroscopy …

On The Plurality Of Existences, Isaiah Lin Dec 2020

On The Plurality Of Existences, Isaiah Lin

Dissertations - ALL

Many philosophers aim to develop a theory of reality—to answer the question, what does reality consist in? Roughly, this is the challenge of ontology. For the last half-century, perhaps most philosophers in the analytic tradition have approached this so-called ontological question arguing that it should be understood as a question about what there is. Call this the Neo-Quinean approach. In recent years, however, serious competitors to this approach have emerged. Neo-Aristotelians, for example, take the ontological question to be best understood as a question about what is fundamental. The Neo-Sellarsians take it to be about the relations between what they …

The fate of small-scale agrarian production, livelihoods, economies and cultures and their transformations under capitalism is an ongoing and global question. Instead of focusing on agriculture, this dissertation focuses on the young adult agriculturalists (18-35 years old) as the subject under transformation. Based in the frameworks of agrarian studies, political ecology and feminist theory, and situated in the Andean region and river basin of Sumapaz, Colombia, this dissertation is a feminist political ecology analysis of agrarian livelihoods, exploring how campesina/o identity is constructed and how the decisions of continuing or not with small-scale agrarian or campesina/o livelihoods are taken and …

Analysis And Behavior Of Segmented Energy Absorbing Steel Plate Shear Walls (Sea-Spsws), Nafiseh Shahbazi Majd Dec 2020

Analysis And Behavior Of Segmented Energy Absorbing Steel Plate Shear Walls (Sea-Spsws), Nafiseh Shahbazi Majd

Dissertations - ALL

Conventional steel plate shear walls (SPSWs) are often designed to behave elastically under normal lateral load condition. However, they are expected to yield and absorb energy through inelastic hysteresis under extreme load condition. Depending on the width-to-thickness ratio and boundary conditions of these walls, SPSWs may also experience inelastic out-of-plane buckling. Therefore, maintaining structural integrity and preventing building collapse are dependent upon their post-buckling behavior. In this study, a new type of SPSW referred to as the Segmented Energy Absorbing Steel Plate Shear Wall (SEA-SPSW) is proposed and its behavior is investigated. The proposed steel plate shear wall is segmented into …

Developing Cognitive Flexibility And Project Management Judgment: Using Online Progressive Cases To Introduce Realistic And Unexpected Challenges, Lina Souid Dec 2020

Developing Cognitive Flexibility And Project Management Judgment: Using Online Progressive Cases To Introduce Realistic And Unexpected Challenges, Lina Souid

Dissertations - ALL

A project is a finite activity aimed at producing a tangible product or service. Designing and developing instruction is a type of project. Instructional design projects (design projects) require instructional designers (IDs) to manage multiple and often overlapping work tasks, balance the triple constraint (time, budget, and quality), and react to project changes. Thus, project management (PM) is a critical aspect of instructional designer competencies.

Traditionally, professional development (PD) involves the use of cases that present a complex, realistic problem for learners to discuss. Most of these cases are static; the problem does not change during the learning process. Static …

A Phenomenological Investigation Of The Lived Experiences Of Workplace Burnout, Wellness, And Resilience In Independently Licensed Private Practice Counselors Who Operate Their Own Practice While Maintaining A Caseload Of Clients, Sara Lynne Thaxton

Dissertations - ALL

Private practice counselors who own their practice are unique from agency practitioners in that they function as both counselor and business owner. Therefore, these counselors must work to find a balance between the human aspects of practicing and the logistical business components of owning and operating a practice. The combination of these two roles can pose unique threats to a private practice counselor’s wellness and how they experience of burnout and resilience - which may differ from agency counterparts. Although resilience and burnout experiences and practices in agency and community counselors are prevalent in the literature, there is a lack …

Treatment And Diagnostic Considerations In A Complex Psychiatric Case - A Case Report, Evan N. Caporaso, John M. Woo Dec 2020

Treatment And Diagnostic Considerations In A Complex Psychiatric Case - A Case Report, Evan N. Caporaso, John M. Woo

Cooper Rowan Medical Journal

A patient with a history of autism spectrum disorder and epilepsy was hospitalized for management of acute onset psychosis and agitation. The acuity of his behaviors warranted abrupt shifts in treatment and multiple pharmacologic interventions were ineffective. The atypical nature of his presentation and intense pressure from ancillary staff to consider organic etiologies drove frequent transitions of care within the hospital setting. Multiple diagnoses were considered including a primary psychosis, excited catatonia and antiepileptic drug-induced psychotic disorder. Ultimately the patient was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and effectively treated with quetiapine and valproic acid. The authors suggest that rapid consideration of …

Gravity Waves, Na Lidar, Yafang Guo, Alan Z. Liu Dec 2020

Gravity Waves, Na Lidar, Yafang Guo, Alan Z. Liu

Publications

Vertical energy transports due to dissipating gravity waves in the mesopause region (85–100 km) are analyzed using over 400 h of observational data obtained from a narrow-band sodium wind-temperature lidar located at Andes Lidar Observatory (ALO), Cerro Pachón (30.25°S, 70.73°W), Chile. Sensible heat flux is directly estimated using measured temperature and vertical wind; energy flux is estimated from the vertical wavenumber and frequency spectra of temperature perturbations; and enthalpy flux is derived based on its relationship with sensible heat and energy fluxes. Sensible heat flux is mostly downward throughout the region. Enthalpy flux exhibits an annual oscillation with maximum downward …

Voltage Controlled-Bandwidth Electrooptic Transverse Phase Modulator With Parallel Electrodes., A. Zaghloul

Mansoura Engineering Journal

An algorithm to find the bandwidth (∆F) and half wave retardation (Vtz) of the transverse phase modulator for several elect optic materials with X, Y AND Z-cuts, is cast where ∆F and Vtz are calculated by determining the propagation constant of anisotropic metal clad electro optic rectangular waveguide before (ᵝa) and after (ᵝy) applied voltage through parallel electrodes. The optimum design with broad ∆F, lower Vtz and smallest propagation losses is done. It is found that KNbO3 without rolating of axes (Z-cut) is the best material but, DaTiO5 with rolating of axes (Y-cut) gives smallest figure of merit (VR/∆F. The …

Identification Of Blda As A Major Regulator Of Virulence In The Sweetpotato Soil Rot Pathogen Streptomyces Ipomoeae And Characterization Of Distinct Clostridium Sweetpotato Soft Rot Isolates, Kuei-Ting Yang Dec 2020

Identification Of Blda As A Major Regulator Of Virulence In The Sweetpotato Soil Rot Pathogen Streptomyces Ipomoeae And Characterization Of Distinct Clostridium Sweetpotato Soft Rot Isolates, Kuei-Ting Yang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Streptomyces ipomoeae is the causative agent of Streptomyces soil rot on sweetpotato, a disease characterized by extensive necrosis of both adventitious and storage roots. While Streptomyces potato scab pathogens produce a phytotoxin (thaxtomin A), which is induced in the presence of cellobiose and suberin, S. ipomoeae produces a less-modified, phytotoxin (thaxtomin C), whose inducer has not been identified. To investigate transcriptional regulation of thaxtomin C production, we inserted a promoter involved in thaxtomin C synthesis upstream of the gusA reporter in an S. ipomoeae strain. Reporter gene expression was significantly upregulated in the presence of size-fractionated sweetpotato extract (SPE). The …

The Conservatism Principle And Asymmetric Preferences Over Reporting Errors, Jivas Chakravarthy, Timothy W. Shields Dec 2020

The Conservatism Principle And Asymmetric Preferences Over Reporting Errors, Jivas Chakravarthy, Timothy W. Shields

ESI Working Papers

At present, accounting conservatism is generally viewed from a measurement or reporting perspective. In contrast, we consider whether it relates to a moral rule of conduct. Conservatism has been described as deriving from a preference for reporting errors to be in the direction of understatement rather than overstatement. We experimentally pair Reporters who provide information with Users who rely on the information. We posit that under misaligned incentives that motivate aggressive reporting, Users view an aggressive report as reflecting Reporters’ exploitative intent and expect that a social norm prohibiting aggressive reporting applies. We predict that Users use noisy reporting errors …

Work-Family Spillover And Depression: Are There Racial Differences Among Employed Women?, Ariane L. Rung, Evrim Oral, Edward S. Peters

School of Public Health Faculty Publications

The intersection of work and family life can be a source of burden (negative) and a source of growth (positive). Negative work-to-family and family-to-work spillover have been linked to poor mental health, while positive work-to-family and family-to-work spillover have been linked to improved health outcomes. Less is known about these relationships in racial subgroups. Louisiana, USA, has a large proportion of African Americans, providing a unique population in which to study these relationships. The objectives of this study were to examine, among a sample of women in southern Louisiana in 2017, levels of work-family spillover by race and how the …

Predicting The Effects Of Climate Change On Freshwater Cyanobacterial Blooms Requires Consideration Of The Complete Cyanobacterial Life Cycle, Kathryn L. Cottingham, Kathleen C. Weathers, Holly Ewing, Meredith Greer, Cayelan C. Carey

All Faculty Scholarship

To date, most research on cyanobacterial blooms in freshwater lakes has focused on the pelagic life stage. However, examining the complete cyanobacterial life cycle—including benthic life stages—may be needed to accurately predict future bloom dynamics. The current expectation, derived from the pelagic life stage, is that blooms will continue to increase due to the warmer temperatures and stronger stratification associated with climate change. However, stratification and mixing have contrasting effects on different life stages: while pelagic cyanobacteria benefit from strong stratification and are adversely affected by mixing, benthic stages can benefit from increased mixing. The net effects of these potentially …
