Molecular And Functional Analyses Of Serine Protease Genes In Halophilic Cyanobacterium Halothece Sp. Pcc 7418, Tanutcha Patipong
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Serine proteases are a class of important proteolytic enzymes that contain a common serine residue, which functions as a nucleophile in the catalytic triad at the active site. They are ubiquitous and abundant proteins found in all living organisms with a wide array of molecular, cellular and physiological functions. In cyanobacteria, the information on serine protease functions is very limited, especially in halotolerant species. This study focuses on comparative analyses of serine proteases in a halotolerant cyanobacterium Halothece sp. PCC 7418 (Halothece 7418) and the model freshwater cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942, regulation under salt-stress condition and functional characterization of …

Development Of Polymeric Niosomes Containing Oxyresveratrol For Skin Care Products, Jirawut Jaimun
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Designing delivery systems to improve active ingredient (AI) efficiencies have increased incredible interests in recent years. In this study, a vesicular system has been developed using thin film hydration method with modifications. Niosomes formed from sorbitan monoesters (SpanTM) with cholesterol molar ratios of 0, 0.5, 1 and 1.5 were prepared with varying AI amount 10-50 mg and was hydrated by hyaluronan solution. Oxyresveratrol was separated from the heartwoods of Artocarpus lacucha. This AI has been broadly utilized to restrain enzyme tyrosinase; however, it possesses low stability against heat and light. Encapsulation utilizing niosome or polymeric niosome as a delivery system …

While previous studies focus on differences between family and nonfamily firms regarding CEO selection and executive compensation, this study investigates differences among family firms with different types of kinship ties. We find that, compared with family firms with close kinship ties, those with distant kinship ties are more likely to appoint a nonfamily CEO and to pay nonfamily executives lower salaries. This relationship is moderated by firm performance and family ownership. Based on evolutionary psychology, we propose that family firms with close versus distant kinships have different motivation levels to preserve socioemotional wealth.
Gatekeeping The Profession, Christopher Williams
Gatekeeping The Profession, Christopher Williams
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The article argues that the U.S. model of legal education functions as a racial gatekeeper, perpetuating inequality by adopting and exacerbating societal prejudices. It highlights how structural mechanisms within legal education, such as standardized testing, admission processes, and socialization, disproportionately exclude and marginalize students of color, particularly black students, mirroring the experiences of Dalits in India's legal education system. The author introduces the concept of "adoptive prejudice," where legal education systems adapt and embed societal hierarchies, leading to systemic exclusion and disparity.
Balancing Burdens In Religious Freedom Claims, T. J. Denley
Balancing Burdens In Religious Freedom Claims, T. J. Denley
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The article examines the expansion of religious freedom claims under the First Amendment and related laws, arguing that recent developments risk creating unequal treatment and burdening marginalized groups. It critiques the shift in doctrine that favors conservative Judeo-Christian morality, potentially undermining antidiscrimination protections and creating "theocratic zones of control." The analysis emphasizes the need to balance religious freedom with the rights of third parties and equality-implicating rights.

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Natural hazards (NHs) are causes for significant concern due to their potentially catastrophic impacts on society. The study of their effects on the upper atmosphere can provide significant insight into the coupled nature of geophysical processes, and drives important applications for radio communication and navigation, leading potentially to the development of NH early-warning systems. Although general concepts underlying their coupling mechanisms are well understood, recent computational capabilities, supported by high temporal and spatial density of observations, have reached the level where such processes can be modeled with unprecedented realism for detailed case studies. The studies provided in this thesis are …

Although LGBTQ+ populations experience significant health challenges, little research exists that investigates their health from an informational perspective. Our study addresses this gap by exploring the health information practices of LGBTQ+ communities in South Carolina, focusing on how sociocultural context shapes these practices. Thirty semi-structured interviews with South Carolina LGBTQ+ community leaders analyzed using open qualitative coding informed the development of a conceptual framework describing their information practices. Findings show that participants engaged in two broad types of practices – protective and defensive – as responses to risks and barriers experienced, which are in turn produced by social and structural …

Scholarly identity refers to endeavors by scholars to promote their reputation, work, and networks using online platforms such as ResearchGate, Academia.edu, and Twitter. This exploratory research investigates benefits and drawbacks of Scholarly Identity efforts and avenues for potential library support. Data from 30 semi-structured phone interviews with faculty, doctoral students, and academic librarians were qualitatively analyzed using the constant comparisons method (Charmaz, 2014) and Goffman’s (1959, 1967) theoretical concept of impression management. Results reveal that use of online platforms enables academics to connect with others and disseminate their research. Scholarly Identity platforms have benefits, opportunities, and offer possibilities for developing …

Researchers have collected Twitter data to study a wide range of topics. This growing body of literature, however, has not yet been reviewed systematically to synthesize Twitter-related papers. The existing literature review papers have been limited by constraints of traditional methods to manually select and analyze samples of topically related papers. The goals of this retrospective study are to identify dominant topics of Twitter-based research, summarize the temporal trend of topics, and interpret the evolution of topics withing the last ten years. This study systematically mines a large number of Twitter-based studies to characterize the relevant literature by an efficient …

As technologies have moved forward and cultural assumptions have changed, we find ourselves at a moment of opportunity. Our sense of the word library is drawn from a rich array of service traditions and a value proposition based on the belief that libraries help those who use them advance in life, engage with others in their communities, and learn more about themselves and the world around them. The Knowledge School concept builds on this assumption and expands it with a broader challenge – a commitment to creating public value, changing communities, and educating those who feel a personal commitment to …

© 2018 Vanadate and vanadium compounds exist in many environmental, biological and clinical matrices, and despite the need only limited progress has been made on the analysis of vanadium compounds. The vanadium coordination chemistry of different oxidation states is known, and the result of the characterization and speciation analysis depends on the subsequent chemistry and the methods of analysis. Many studies have used a range of methods for the characterization and determination of metal ions in a variety of materials. One successful technique is high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) that has been used mainly for measuring total vanadium level and …

Using old or uncommon drugs as alternative choices are interesting option to avoid drug resistance problems. Fosfomycin is an old antibacterial drug with broad spectrum and excreted via urine in active form. Fosfomycin tromethamine (FOS) has been approved to treat uncomplicated urinary tract infection (UTI) in women by FDA. However, in dogs, FOS data is inadequate and precise dosages have not been established yet. Thus, this study aims to determine pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) of FOS in E. coli from dog with UTI. A total of 6 healthy male beagle dogs were administered with FOS in 3 different dosages …

A Presumption In Favor Of Openness: Unsealing Adoption Records, Emily Ingall
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The note argues that the current system of sealed adoption records in the United States, which prioritizes confidentiality over adoptees' rights, is outdated and harmful. It advocates for a presumption of openness, asserting that adoptees have a fundamental right to access their birth records, which is essential for their identity, medical needs, and psychological well-being. The analysis calls for legal reforms that balance the privacy rights of birth parents with the rights of adoptees to their personal information, proposing a model that includes contact preference registries and access to non-identifying information.
