Diverse And Complex Muscle Spindle Afferent Firing Properties Emerge From Multiscale Muscle Mechanics, Kyle P. Blum, Kenneth S. Campbell, Brian C. Horslen, Paul Nardelli, Stephen N. Housley, Timothy C. Cope, Lena H. Ting

Physiology Faculty Publications

Despite decades of research, we lack a mechanistic framework capable of predicting how movement-related signals are transformed into the diversity of muscle spindle afferent firing patterns observed experimentally, particularly in naturalistic behaviors. Here, a biophysical model demonstrates that well-known firing characteristics of mammalian muscle spindle Ia afferents – including movement history dependence, and nonlinear scaling with muscle stretch velocity – emerge from first principles of muscle contractile mechanics. Further, mechanical interactions of the muscle spindle with muscle-tendon dynamics reveal how motor commands to the muscle (alpha drive) versus muscle spindle (gamma drive) can cause highly variable and complex activity during …

We report β-NMR measurements in Bi2Se3:Ca and Bi2Te3:Mn single crystals using 8Li+ implanted to depths on the order of 100 nm. Above ∼200K, spin-lattice relaxation reveals diffusion of 8Li+, with activation energies of ∼0.4eV (∼0.2eV) in Bi2Se3:Ca (Bi2Te3:Mn). At lower temperatures, the NMR properties are those of a heavily doped semiconductor in the metallic limit, with Korringa relaxation and a small, negative, temperature-dependent Knight shift in Bi2Se3:Ca. From this, we make a detailed comparison with …

Explorations In The Crafting Of Government’S Authority And Power Using Institutional Ethnography: The Case Of The 2013 Zamboanga Crisis, Leslie Advincula-Lopez, Nota F. Magno

Development Studies Faculty Publications

Crisis response is a clear illustration of what Migdal (2004) posits in his Statein-society approach: the iterative relationship between State authority and social actors' everyday practices. As the rise in recent natural and humanmade disasters call for proficiencies in crisis response, it becomes essential to observe how the variabilities in State-in-society responses unfold through institutionally coordinated everyday social relations. The situation reveals the need to theorize these relationships on the grounds of the dynamic coconstitution of State-in-society. This study employed institutional ethnography (Devault & McCoy, 2002; Smith, 2005); observing the interplay of various actors' interests and strategies within institutional processes …

A Genetic-Based Approach For Solving Optimal Power Flow Problem., Magdy Mohamed El-Saadawi Dec 2020

A Genetic-Based Approach For Solving Optimal Power Flow Problem., Magdy Mohamed El-Saadawi

Mansoura Engineering Journal

The optimal power flow (OPF) is an optimization problem, in which the utility strives to minimize its costs while satisfying all of its constraints. Artificial intelligence is used to help a hypothetical electric utility nieet its electric load economically. A genetic algorithm (GA) —a specific type of artificial intelligence—is employed to perform this optimization. In this paper, a genetic algorithm is used to solve the OPF problem. A new genetic chromosome is structured to represent the solutions. The new chromosome structure is chosen in such a way that it greatly reduce the number of times the algorithm must solve the …

The Sacramento River Basin (SRB) and the San Joaquin River Basin (JRB) have a history of recurring droughts. Both are important for California, being the crucial source of water supply. The available instrumental records may not depict the long-term hydrologic variability encompassing the duration and frequency of the historic low flow events. Thus, streamflow reconstruction becomes important in the current scenario of climatic alteration, escalating population and growing water needs. Studies have shown that Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), Southern Oscillation Index (SOI), and Pacific Ocean sea surface temperature (SST) influence the precipitation and streamflow volumes of southwestern United States, particularly …

Modeling By Disruption And A Selected-For Partner For The Nude Locus, Jian Li, Yun-Kyoung Lee, Wenyu Fu, Anne M. Whalen, Mario C. Estable, Laurel A. Raftery, Kristin White, Lorin Weiner, Janice L. Brissette

Life Sciences Faculty Research

A long‐standing problem in biology is how to dissect traits for which no tractable model exists. Here, we screen for genes like the nude locus (Foxn1)—genes central to mammalian hair and thymus development—using animals that never evolved hair, thymi, or Foxn1. Fruit flies are morphologically disrupted by the FOXN1 transcription factor and rescued by weak reductions in fly gene function, revealing molecules that potently synergize with FOXN1 to effect dramatic, chaotic change. Strong synergy/effectivity in flies is expected to reflect strong selection/functionality (purpose) in mammals; the more disruptive a molecular interaction is in alien contexts (flies), the more beneficial it …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research

We present PyXtal_FF—a package based on Python programming language—for developing machine learning potentials (MLPs). The aim of PyXtal_FF is to promote the application of atomistic simulations through providing several choices of atom-centered descriptors and machine learning regressions in one platform. Based on the given choice of descriptors (including the atom-centered symmetry functions, embedded atom density, SO4 bispectrum, and smooth SO3 power spectrum), PyXtal_FF can train MLPs with either generalized linear regression or neural network models, by simultaneously minimizing the errors of energy/forces/stress tensors in comparison with the data from ab-initio simulations. The trained MLP model from PyXtal_FF is interfaced with …

An Integrated Three-Flow Approach For Front-End Service Composition, Lim Mei Ting Dec 2020

An Integrated Three-Flow Approach For Front-End Service Composition, Lim Mei Ting

Student Works (2020-2029)

End-User Service Composition (EUSC) aims to enable end-user programmers who are not professional developers, develop applications by composing or aggregating existing web services. Despite the effort, studies have shown that end-user programmers are not able to deal with the technical complexities involved in EUSC. One way to deal with this issue is Front-End Service Composition (FESC), which allows end-user programmers to compose web services at the presentation layer of an application by configuring User Interface (UI) widgets that represent the back-end web services. However, apart from there not being enough studies on FESC, end-user programmers also experience a number of …

Epitaxial Growth Of Semi-Polar (11-22) Gallium Nitride For Uv Photosensing Application, Abdullah Haaziq Ahmad Makinudin Dec 2020

Epitaxial Growth Of Semi-Polar (11-22) Gallium Nitride For Uv Photosensing Application, Abdullah Haaziq Ahmad Makinudin

Student Works (2020-2029)

Semi-polar (11-22) gallium nitride (GaN) epilayers have attracted numerous interests in GaN based technology as it possess significant advantages over its polar (c-plane) counterparts such as low to none spontaneous and piezoelectric polarization which is known to impair the device performance. However, growth along semi-polar (11-22) orientation has been known to exhibit numerous defect densities such as dislocations and stacking faults (SFs). In order to acquire high quality semi-polar (11-22) GaN epilayers, various growth optimizations must be employed. In this work, the semi-polar (11-22) GaN epilayers were grown on planar m-plane sapphire substrate with the use of a 2-inch capability …

Impact Of Psychoeducation Program On Turkish Students' Negative Attitudes Towards Refugee Peers, Ali Çekiç, Zeynep Hamamcı

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

About 26% of the Syrian population in Turkey is made up of school-age children. In the 2017–2018 academic year, 608,000 Syrian students enrolled in the education system, and 50% attended temporary education centers established for only Syrian students, while the other half attended public schools with their Turkish peers. One of the main factors that complicate the adaptation process of Syrian refugee students who have come to a different culture and have been placed in a foreign education system is the discriminatory attitudes from the locals’ prejudices. Thus, in this study, a five-week psychoeducation program was developed and implemented by …

The method was applied to aquifer system underlain the City of Miami Beach at north of Spain.

The Effect Of Rust Removal Agent On Bond Strength Of Reinforcing Steel Bars., Sayed Abdelbaky Dec 2020

The Effect Of Rust Removal Agent On Bond Strength Of Reinforcing Steel Bars., Sayed Abdelbaky

Mansoura Engineering Journal

When reinforcing bars start corroding inside the concrete, it is difficult to arrest the corrosion process without using any technique to protect the reinforcing bars against corrosion. One of these techniques, is removing the contaminated concrete around steel bars and cleaning them by using sand blast to remove the rust. Sand blast is not easy to use especially in closed areas where it results in high pollution and may cause suffocation to workers. Thus, a chemical agent was developed by chemical called rust ̶ stop or rust removal to clean the corroded reinforcing bars instead of sand blast. The purpose …

Experimental Analysis Of Impulse Characteristics Of Grounding Grids With And Without Rods., S. El-Drieny, Magdy Mohamed El-Saadawi, I. Metwally

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Impulse characteristics of grounding systems have a great influence on proper evaluation of substation equipment stresses from lightning overvoltages, protection and design points of view. The grounding grid impulse characteristics depend on: grid parameters and soil characteristics as well as on the impulse current shape, magnitude and discharge point. The addition of driven rods to the grid has an action on grounding grid impulse characteristics. This paper presents an experimental study for determining the impedance of grounding grid with and without driven rods. Tests are conducted on three scale models to simulate single-, double- and triple layer soils. Also, the …

A Distant Reading Of Khamphun Bunthawi’S Luk Isan (A Child Of The Northeast) As World Literature, Ram Prasansak

Journal of Letters

This article offers a distant reading of Khamphun Bunthawi’s Luk Isan (A Child of the Northeast) as world literature. By attending to its production, circulation, translation, and reception in an interlocking literary system, it shows that the novel borrows the bildungsroman form from an American children’s novel. This borrowing underlines the role of translated literature and editors in establishing a profoundly unequal relationship between the Western core and peripheral literatures. This article also examines the English translation of Luk Isan. It argues that while the translation creates an intertext that aids Anglophone audiences in comprehending the novel’s foreignness, it …
