The "People's Total War On Covid-19": Urban Pandemic Management Through (Non-)Law In Wuhan, China, Philipp Renninger
Washington International Law Journal
Although COVID-19 was first detected in the People’s Republic of China, the pandemic now appears contained there. Western and Chinese media attribute this apparent success to the central level of the Chinese state and the Communist Party. However, this article reveals that local entities provided critical contributions to China’s COVID-19 management, particularly in the pandemic’s first epicenter: Wuhan city in Hubei province. Chinese cities like Wuhan can fight public health emergencies through legal and nonlegal instruments. Although Wuhan had prepared for possible pandemics, its existing plans, institutions, and warning systems initially failed against COVID-19. The city did not contain the …
Legal Complications Of Repatriation At The British Museum, Hannah R. Godwin
Legal Complications Of Repatriation At The British Museum, Hannah R. Godwin
Washington International Law Journal
The British Museum has been the target of criticism around the world for its failure to repatriate controversial cultural property to their respective countries of origin. In 1753, a private collector left his collection to Great Britain if it agreed to build a public museum and designate a Board of Trustees whose duty was to protect the collection for the public. Statutorily incorporating the collector’s intent, Parliament passed legislation binding the Board of Trustees to abide by certain principles, including preserving the collection and prohibiting disposal of objects, except in very few circumstances. As such, the Museum is administrated through …

Transient And Steady State Analysis Of High Efficiency Single-Phase Induction Motor., Yasser Dessouky, Hamdy Ashour
Mansoura Engineering Journal
Operating a three-phase induction motor from a single-phase supply via three capacitors is studied. The capacitor values may be adjusted so as to get a motor balanced mode of operation. The model of the machine is derived using instantaneous symmetrical components. Equations describing die machine dynamics have been derived then used to simulate and analyze the machine performance for different modes of operation. The machine transient and steady stale performance is predicted using Malab-Simulink software, Experimental results have been obtained and compared with the simulated waveforms, showing the effectiveness of the proposed machine model.

Materials For Sustainable Constructions: Concrete And Masonry., Mohamed Abdel-Ghaffar, Ahmed Ahmed Rizk
Mansoura Engineering Journal
There is a lot of imagery associated with the term "environmentally". Environmentally friendly products (Green products) –from the photovoltaic panels to the buildings made up of Aluminuum cans and old tires- look distinctive. Green building materials are green in the way they are manufactured, used, and recycled after use. What is meant here are alternative agricultural, recycled content, nontoxic, and energy efficient products that may display environmental ethics. Prior to the industrial revolution, society met most of their needs with materials from the earth and then returned to the earth after use. Nowadays, many green products are gaining ground in …
Designing A Standard Assets Registration System To Reduce Corruption In Afghanistan: What Afghanistan Can Learn From Examining Model Assets Declaration Systems, Zalmay Mallyar
San Diego International Law Journal
Corruption in Afghanistan has emerged as one the greatest challenges to strengthening national and subnational governance and rebuilding a transparent and accountable system public services. One way that corrupt actors in Afghanistan have perpetuated corrupt practices is through hiding assets. Currently, Afghanistan has no specific mechanism or system for implementing or overseeing the declaration of assets—even though it has committed to creating an assets declaration criteria system as a means to fight corruption under Article 154 of the Afghan Constitution, Article 12 of the Anti-Corruption Strategy act, and various international treaties. This paper recommends that that Afghanistan seek to create …

Refocusing The United States’ Perspective Of China And The South China Sea, Gaaret Marinelli
San Diego International Law Journal
There is a shift in world power that can be felt by world leaders and ordinary citizens alike, and its movement will realign the rest of the world. Since its rise to a great world power after World War II, the United States has maintained its position as the world’s predominant leader, both militarily and economically. However, this dominance is threatened by a formidable challenger. A rapidly ascending China is challenging the United States’ military and economic power, but the United States is not adequately positioned to meet this challenge. Some scholars theorize that China and the United States are …

Journal of Critical Issues in Educational Practice
The psychological well-being of American children has been a concern due to the rise in mental health issues. Efforts have been made to tackle some of the issues that are most prevalent among youth such as stress, depression, bullying, substance abuse, suicide and self-harm. Attempted solutions include legislation at the state level, school-wide regulations, and individualized supports. Despite these efforts, there are still discrepancies with implementation and regulation of policies and programs. These inconsistencies have resulted in the continual decline in the mental health of American youth. The United States can gain a more focused direction for their mental health …
An Improved Single Phase Full Bridge Inverter Using Sequential Triggering For Achieving Zero Voltage Without Inductor., Mohamed Galal Osman, Saad Saad Eskander, Ahmed Mosa
An Improved Single Phase Full Bridge Inverter Using Sequential Triggering For Achieving Zero Voltage Without Inductor., Mohamed Galal Osman, Saad Saad Eskander, Ahmed Mosa
Mansoura Engineering Journal
This paper introduces new technique for triggering full bridge inverter based on power transistor as switches. This method based on the design of a sequential timer as triggering circuits. The designed timer is designed to trigger the power switches of the two branches of the inverter and provides enough delay time between the triggering signals of the inverter branches. The interval of the delay time must be properly chosen to ensure that the current of branch reaches to its zero before applying the triggering to the second branch of the inverter. Consequently, the load current crosses the zero value and …
Numerical Calculation Of Electronic Circuits With Nonlinear Elements, X Sapaev, E Abduraimov, Sh Umarov
Numerical Calculation Of Electronic Circuits With Nonlinear Elements, X Sapaev, E Abduraimov, Sh Umarov
Technical science and innovation
Non-linear elements are widely used in various automation devices, converting and measuring equipment. They are often presented in the form of diode-resistive circuits. In single-circuit electrical circuits, their calculation by a numerical method reduces to compiling nonlinear equations and solving it using the Newton-Raphson method with specifying reasonable initial conditions for the calculation. The article is aimed at determining the dimensions of the Jacobi matrix in numerical calculations of nonlinear chains. Using the example of numerical calculation of two simplest schemes with nonlinear elements, it is shown that by eliminating the coordinate chain (system equations) from the system of equations …

Journal of Electrochemistry
Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is a high-efficient clean conversion device for future energy management. Because of the low antioxidant reduction ability and complex thermal stress, the structure of traditional asymmetrical thin anode-supported planar SOFC is easily to be broken under stack operating conditions. To overcome these defects, a new complete symmetrical SOFC based on double-sided cathodes was developed. To study the influences of gas flow direction and current collection mode on the cell performance inside stack, a numerical model was established by finite element method based on the theory of electro-thermo-chemo multiphysical coupling. By applying this model, the molar …

A Computer Vision System For Detecting Tufted Carpet Defects., Ramsis Farag, Faiez Arid, Nadia Bondok
Mansoura Engineering Journal
This work presents an approach to extract, analyze and select image attributes necessary for building a vision computer system that is able to detect and classify tufted carper defects. Four different tufted carpets and four different defects were considered; missing pile, higher pile, lower pile, slobs and knots. Carpet digital images were statistically analyzed to calculate Mean, Variance, Skewness, Kurtosis, and Entropy, known as tonal features. Texture features were extracted from co-occurrence matrices describing the relationships between intensities of two pixels at a certain distance and angle from each other and evaluated using SGLDM and GLDM statistics. Graphical presentation and …
A Trial For Mitigation Of Waterlogging Problem In New Reclaimed Areas In The Desert Fringes Of Beni Suef And El-Minya Governorates, Egypt., Mohamed Gad
Mansoura Engineering Journal
Expanding the reclamation of new lands within the unlimited desert area of Egypt has started to face the continuous growth of population and the urgent need for food security. The reclamation of the Nile valley's desert fringes affects its traditional cultivated areas as a result of the difference in the topographic level, inadequate drainage system and the existence of shallow depth clay lenses beneath these sites which creates a perched condition that helps greatly in fasting the rising rate of water table. The present paper threw light on a trial to mitigate the waterlogging problem due to the reclamation activities …
Hydraulic Jump In Circular Open Channels., I. Rashwan
Hydraulic Jump In Circular Open Channels., I. Rashwan
Mansoura Engineering Journal
The hydraulic jump is a transitional slate from an upstream supercritical to downstream subcritical flow, and, for a given set of flow conditions, it has a fixed position length. The phenomenon of the hydraulic jump has been widely studied because of its frequent occurrence in nature, and because of its uses in many practical applications. In the present study the momentum principle is used to derive an equation expressed the hydraulic jump occurred in a short horizontal reach of a circular open channel. The derived equation indicates that the initial water depth and sequent water depth (conjugate depths) are functions …

Phlebotomine sand flies employ an elaborate system of pheromone communication wherein males produce pheromones that attract other males to leks (thus acting as an aggregation pheromone) and females to the lekking males (sex pheromone). In addition, the type of pheromone produced varies among populations. Despite the numerous studies on sand fly chemical communication, little is known of their chemosensory genome. Chemoreceptors interact with chemicals in an organism’s environment to elicit essential behaviors such as the identification of suitable mates and food sources. Thus, they play important roles during adaptation and speciation. Major chemoreceptor gene families, odorant receptors (ORs), gustatory receptors …

Many species show natal habitat preference induction (NHPI), a behavior in which young adults select habitats similar to those in which they were raised. However, we know little about how NHPI develops in natural systems. Here, we tested for NHPI in juvenile common loons (Gavia immer) that foraged on lakes in the vicinity of their natal lake after fledging. Juveniles visited lakes similar in pH to their natal lakes, and this significant effect persisted after controlling for spatial autocorrelation. On the other hand, juveniles showed no preference for foraging lakes of similar size to their natal one. When …

Remedies For United States-Mexico Cross-Border Incidents, Sebastian A. Navarro
Remedies For United States-Mexico Cross-Border Incidents, Sebastian A. Navarro
San Diego International Law Journal
Countries that share borders inevitably encounter issues with each other. The United States and Mexico, however, face a uniquely complicated issue: United States federal officers standing in United States territory have shot and killed individuals standing in Mexican territory, generating much tension between the United States and Mexico. Some believe that a remedy for cross-border incidents is best addressed through litigation in United States federal courts, particularly through common law causes of action that afford monetary compensation based on claims of constitutional violations. This issue was recently addressed in part by the United States Supreme Court.
Nonetheless, there are numerous …
