Following the Japanese invasion of mainland China, and the subsequent Nanjing Massacre in 1937, Chinese Massacre survivors gained a nationalistic perspective as a result of their lived experiences. Later, these survivors’ nationalistic perspective came in direct conflict with the class-based perspective held by the Chinese Communist Party. This clash in political views helps shed light upon much of the internal and external Chinese historical narrative throughout the mid to late twentieth century.

Between 1957 and 1963, Canada acquired numerous nuclear delivery systems to fulfill commitments to the defence of North America and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). In 1972, Pierre Trudeau’s government divested most of these systems. Much of the literature ascribes Trudeau’s decision to purely political reasons. By examining the contributions of two operational researchers from the Defence Research Board, Dr. R.J. Sutherland and Dr. George Lindsey, this article assesses the influence of professional advice on denuclearisation. This research has found that Lindsey and Sutherland provided a strategic grammar which helped shape the nature and timing of partial denuclearisation.

This dissertation examines the skeletal remains and mortuary practices from two cemeteries at the early medieval site of Libice nad Cidlinou in the Czech Republic. The 9th and 10th centuries in Central Europe have been characterized by political consolidation and the rise of Christian institutions. As Christianity gained influence in the region, conversion altered not only religious beliefs: political landscapes, disease ideologies, material culture, and bodies were also transformed. The skeletal remains and mortuary contexts of 260 individuals from the Akropole and Kanín cemeteries at Libice are compared to examine how social status and engagement with Christianity influenced daily life …

In fact, academics, researchers, and industry professionals have been developing AI systems since the early 1900s. AI is a field uniquely positioned at the intersection of several scientific disciplines including computer science, applied mathematics, and neuroscience. The AI design process is meticulous, deliberate, and time-consuming – involving intensive mathematical theory, data processing, and computer programming. This thesis investigates a series of overlapping structures in unit F1-U25 at Ames (40FY7), an Early to Middle Mississippian period (ca. AD 1050 - 1300) site in Fayette County, Tennessee. Ames is comprised of a town, plaza, and four mounds all surrounded by a palisade wall. Approximately 220 meters east of the palisade wall, unit F1-U25 revealed a series of superimposed structures. The two primary goals of this thesis include determining the temporal relationship between the superimposed structures and the town site; and determining the function of the structures. Search engine optimization (SEO) and search engine auto-fill features allows us to see how people search online, and the words they use, in real-time. Anonymous querying equates to anonymity, and by nature when we input key words or key phrases in search engines like Google we use succinct, brief, and to-the-point queries. What does this mean for how we search for Native American or “Indian” results? A 2019 SEO and keyword/phrase analysis revealed that the notorious “wise Indian trope” (similar to the “magical negro” trope) is still very prevalent today, particularly when comparing the keyword “wise” paired with non-Native races. …

This Article explores the extent of the change by looking at the ways in which asymmetric conflict and legalization have reshaped the theatre of hostilities and the implications for the institution of war itself. This article traces the trajectory of the Catholic Church’s discourses on drug use in the Philippines since the first time a statement was made in the 1970s. By drawing on official statements by the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), it argues that shifts in emphasis have taken place through the years: the destruction of the youth, attack on human dignity, and then social moral decay. Collectively, they emanate from an institutional concern for peace and order. But they also reflect the moral panic around drug use that has been around for decades, which, on several …

Polyimide/Silicon Dioxide Nanocomposites As Dielectrics For Helium-Cooled High-Temperature Superconducting Cables, Harrison Michael Hones

In this thesis, polyimide (PI) and silicon dioxide (SiO2) were combined in the form of a nanocomposite for use as a dielectric on helium-cooled high-temperature superconducting (HTS) cables. Further, a cryogenic chamber was designed with the intent of cooling samples to 40 K for dielectric and thermal contraction testing. Composites were created through an in situ process which resulted in nanoparticle formation within the host matrix. Samples were tested for dielectric strength at room temperature (300 K) as well as cryogenic temperature (92 K) using liquid nitrogen as the coolant. This paper examines the causal relationship between cyber technology’s deep global integration and changes in how states struggle for power in the international system. Specifically, it argues that cyber technology has changed international conflict by providing external actors the ability to penetrate states’ grand strategy decision-making and implementation processes to an unprecedented degree and scope. This study aimed to investigate the effects of walking in a hot and humid environment while wearing a combat suit with a load on physiological responses among the Malaysian Military Reserve Officer Training Unit (ROTU) female cadets. Eight healthy female ROTU cadets (age: 21.3 ± 1.0 years old; height: 156.3 ± 4.9 cm; weight: 55.6 ± 7.5 kg) participated in this randomised, crossover trial. Over the course of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, Christine de Pizan has resurfaced in the academic and literary spheres as a paragon of proto-feminist thought. This modern fascination with the fifteenth-century writer is largely grounded in her surprisingly progressive views on a woman's right to receive an education, to govern and achieve financial freedom. More recently, scholars have lauded Christine's later works for their reinterpretation of what it meant to be a woman in fifteenth-century Europe. Sex and/or gender (sex/gender) factors play an important role in shaping the experiences, exposures, and health outcomes of male and female healthcare providers working in war and conflict settings. This study aims to (1) assess how sex/gender is considered in the occupational health literature on healthcare workers in conflict settings, and (2) identify the gaps in incorporating sex/gender concepts in this literature. “Diseases of despair” is a conceptually broad category used to describe the phenomenon of premature mortality caused by suicide, drug poisoning, and alcoholic liver disease. Central to this conceptualization of mortality is that death occurs too early in an entire population of individuals infected with social despair. Implicit in the diseases of despair construct is a powerful normative claim about the manner and time of death—that death is bad if it is contextualized in unwanted conditions and happens before reaching midlife. Approximately 50% of 22 million American military veterans use civilian healthcare in addition to, or in lieu of, the Department of Veteran's Affairs health facilities. Studies find that theses veterans may have unidentified mental health needs and lack access to appropriate mental health services. Barriers to adequate mental health care include: (a) undisclosed veteran status; (b) stigma; (c) lack of cultural competency in civilian healthcare; and (d) an overall shortage of mental health services. With veteran post-traumatic stress disorder rates as high as 23%, we conducted a quality improvement project to improve veteran identification, mental health needs assessment, and access …

We argue that information literacy instruction that aims at developing students’ critical thinking habits should address how safeguards in the information cycle fail. We argue that such “short circuits” in the information cycle can be best engaged with at a “middle distance”—not so distant from students’ lived experience that they seem irrelevant, but not so close that students can’t gain a critical distance—and illustrate this framework with three such cases that concern moral panics about new technologies. Since 2004, close to 7,000 people have died in Thailand’s domestic insurgency in its three Muslim-majority southern provinces, one of the longest-running, low-intensity conflicts in Southeast Asia. This study assesses perceptions of human security threats in the area among a sample of students, their parents, and teachers of Islamic private schools (n = 427, n = 331, n = 51, respectively), and how they relate to perceptions of government actors and other community institutions. Questionnaire items were drawn from the World Values Survey Wave 6. Focus groups and interviews were also conducted to deepen our understanding of conflict related dynamics.

This research paper offers a different institutional approach to studying state-societal relations in modern Yemen. The re-conceptualization of the terms - tribe and tribalism- paved the path for a deeper investigation of the interaction between the state and the tribe. The rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh (1978-2011) was the timeline dissected in this detailed comparative historical analysis. This study unveiled the prominence of tribalism as an informal institution that governed state-societal relations in Yemen.
