This Article explores the gap between the definition of armed attack and the threshold for international armed conflict to identify such possible consequences of the different definitions for the application of either or both bodies of law and to consider whether efforts to reconcile the different meanings are feasible and, more importantly, desirable or problematic. This paper examines economic aggression from the Japanese fishing fleet beginning in 1936 and the response from organized labor in America prior to the famous attack on Pearl Harbor. The focus of this is research is primarily from the perspective of American labor, drawing heavily on the Voice of the Federation newspaper, which was a publication owned by the Maritime Federation of the Pacific. The US government was aware of encroachment of Japanese floating canneries in 1936, but took little action against Japan in order to avoid worsening tensions between the two nations. Identity, though deeply personal, has often been exploited by the ruling class in order to gain power over their subjects. The preservation of social cleavages—be they national, ethnic, racial, religious, et cetera—is thus a matter of public policy. To ensure the propagation of a certain identity, the state must rely on its current citizens to reproduce the social structures that give their identities value. Employing content and discourse analysis, this paper examines the discursive strategies and practices behind a United States Air Force (USAF) recruitment advertisement featuring a new generation of hitech weapon systems: Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPAs), better known as drones. I locate this discussion in relation to critical scholarship on the military-industrial-media-entertainment complex and its implications for naturalizing a state of perpetual war. Following this, I chart the evolution of USAF commercials from the Vietnam era to the present. This article examines international obligations that arise in relation to the conduct of other States, and analyzes how they apply and interact in the context of partnered warfare. It investigates rules of State responsibility relevant to the context of partnered warfare, as well as primary norms that impose obligations connected to the conduct of others. In essence, they consist of obligations not to actively help to or to blindly let others do what a State would not do itself. Advanced optical stealth technology is increasingly important in the role of aircraft platforms whether manned (e.g. F117A) or unmanned (e.g. X47B Pegasus). Here we consider the concept validity of using low power passive reflective display elements rather than high power active projection to achieve the same result. This paper presents practical consideration towards minimal radiated power, and power requirements using adaptive passive methods. Prism-coupling as a means of probing thin liquid crystal layers to obtain information on optical tensor parameters is possible using the Kraetschmann-Raether configuration. This article introduces the Seshat: Global History Databank, its potential, and its methodology. Seshat is a databank containing vast amounts of quantitative data buttressed by qualitative nuance for a large sample of historical and archaeological polities. The sample is global in scope and covers the period from the Neolithic Revolution to the Industrial Revolution. Seshat allows scholars to capture dynamic processes and to test theories about the co-evolution (or not) of social scale and complexity, agriculture, warfare, religion, and any number of such Big Questions. This article is an introductory report on the work of a Japanese study group whose primary aim is peacemaking, which it seeks by promoting a greater understanding of the long-term effects of their country’s traumatic experience of the Second World War. The group does not adopt a position of victimhood but seeks to understand the full picture of Japan’s role in the war, including its role as perpetrator. We came together with the shared assumption that the country’s inability to take responsibility for its role of the war is inextricably tied to its own traumatization. If this assumption is true, …

Other than “The Troubled Backstory of the Twenty-Fifth Amendment,” articles in this issue of the journal have their origins in presentations at the Centre for the Resolution of Intractable Conflicts conference at Oxford University, September 2019, which addressed themes arising from dual anniversaries—the 150th birthday anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and the 140th birthday anniversary of Albert Einstein. The presentations covered a wide and disparate geographical spread—with authors from Singapore, Australia, Turkey, the United States, Syria, the United Kingdom, and Belgium, and articles covering Myanmar, Japan, Australia, Turkey and Syria and Europe.

Assessing Biobehavioral Effects Of Exposure To Traumatic Events In Palestinian Children, Mohammad Asia

Background: A growing body of work suggests that exposure of children to the trauma of war threatens their physical and psychological development. Children exposed to such childhood adversity have an increased risk of developing mental health problems, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), emotional and behavioral problems, and psychobiological ailments. Methods: This pilot study used a descriptive cross-sectional design to explore the relationships among traumatic event exposure, child stress, and biological stress markers (salivary cortisol and salivary alpha-amylase) measured in a sample of 37 West Bank Palestinian children aged 10-12 years. Globally, the displacement of persons is reaching record numbers, including millions of refugees seeking safety outside of their native countries. The existing literature on factors of successful refugee settlement lacks specific quantitative analysis, and most of the available information on the role of culture is limited to psychological and social research. I expect that large perceived differences in the culture of the refugee and the culture of the country in which they settle will cause a combination of xenophobic public responses and restrictive government policies, and therefore will be negatively related to successful social integration of those refugees. Seven Black women graduate students from across different functional areas of higher education work in solidarity to write a collective Black Feminist Autoethnography (BFA) (Griffin, 2012) about our experiences at our respective colleges and universities. BFA is a "theoretical and methodological means for Black female academics to critically narrate the pride and pain of Black womanhood" (Griffin, 2012, p. 1). This article centers Black feminist scholarship as a framework to reflexively interpret how we as seven Black women navigate within, against, and beyond the academy to address dominant narratives that affect our professional and personal experiences.
