Simulated Annealing Algorithm For The Linear Ordering Problem: The Case Of Tanzania Input Output Tables, Allen Mushi
Tanzania Journal of Science
Linear Ordering is a problem of ordering the rows and columns of a matrix such that the sum of the upper triangle values is as large as possible. The problem has many applications including aggregation of individual preferences, weighted ancestry relationships and triangulation of input-output tables in economics. As a result, many researchers have been working on the problem which is known to be NP-hard. Consequently, heuristic algorithms have been developed and implemented on benchmark data or specific real-world applications. Simulated Annealing has seldom been used for this problem. Furthermore, only one attempt has been done on the Tanzanian input …

Comparative In Vitro Antioxidant Activities Of Aqueous Extracts Of Garcinia Kola And Buchholzia Coriacea Seeds, Abdulkadir Abubakar, Moshood Olorunkemi, Musa Busari, Rabiat Hamzah, Tawakaltu Abdulrasheed-Adeleke
Tanzania Journal of Science
Comparative in vitro antioxidant activities of aqueous extracts of Garcinia kola and Buchholzia coriacea seeds were carried out using 2, 2-diphenyl 1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activities, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and inhibition of lipid peroxidation assays. Total phenolics, alkaloids, tannins, saponins and flavonoids constituents of the samples were also determined. G. kola seeds contained higher concentrations of secondary metabolites compared to B. coriacea seeds except flavonoids. Both G. kola and B. coriacea exhibited minimum percentage inhibition when compared with the gallic acid. However, B. coriacea exhibited significantly (p < 0.05) higher percentage DPPH scarvenging activities (44.66%) when compared with G. kola (43.62%) at maximum concentration of 100 µg/mL. G. kola on the other hand, showed higher percentage inhibition of lipid peroxidation when compared with B. coriacea at all tested concentrations. Percentage FRAP by B. coriacea was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than G. kola at 100 µg/mL (46.65%, and 38.35%, respectively) and 50 µg/mL (38.75%, and 46.05%, respectively), while lower percentage FRAP of the G. kola than B. coriacea were recorded at 25 µg/mL (24.26% and 38.24%, respectively) and 12.5 µg/mL (34.41% and 37.41%, respectively). Therefore, Garcinia kola and B. coriacea showed appreciable antioxidant activities at varying concentrations and this may be due to the presence of various phenolic compounds in both samples Keywords: Buchholzia coriacea; Garcinia kola; Antioxidant; DPPH free radicals; Secondary metabolites.

Multipath Exploitation-Based Indoor Target Localization Model Using Single Marginal Antenna, Joseph Sisala
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
Recently, indoor target localization became an area of interest due to its diverse applications. In indoor target localization, surrounding environment creates multipath components, which can be exploited to aid in localization process. A number of studies have been proposed to employ multipath exploitation in localizing indoor targets. However, their localization errors can still be improved. This study proposed a new localization model based on multipath exploitation techniques by using triangulation method. Ultra-wide band signals were resolved and associated using marginal antenna-based scheme. The estimate of the target location was then obtained using measured round-trip time delays. The location was determined …

Young people constitute a disproportionate share of the population in most African countries, and as such, make up a key political demographic. The discourse on youth political participation tends to focus narrowly on disengaged, apathetic and troublesome youth. Yet, many African youth have taken on leadership positions across the continent, engaging in politics, civil society, and activism. This article seeks an understanding of what drives their public engagement. Drawing on a qualitative study of 33 leaders across Ghana, Tanzania, and Uganda, we argue that a range of individual, relational, and societal factors entwine and build on each other to foster …

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
We study dividend maximization with set ruin probability targets for an insurance company whose surplus is modelled by a diffusion perturbed classical risk process. The company is permitted to enter into proportional or excess-of-loss reinsurance arrangements. By applying stochastic control theory, we derive Volterra integral equations and solve numerically using block-by-block methods. In each of the models, we have established the optimal barrier to use for paying dividends provided the ruin probability does not exceed a predetermined target. Numerical examples involving the use of both light- and heavy-tailed distributions are given. The results show that ruin probability targets result in …

Background: Reports on a systematic evaluation of the impact of antiretroviral therapy(ART) on patients’ hospitalisation in Sub Saharan Africa (SSA) and Tanzania, in particular, are scarce. We aimed at documenting the trends of hospital admissions at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) following scale-up of free access to ART in Tanzania.
Methods: Records for all admissions at MNH from June 2005 to June 2015 were reviewed. We extracted data from the Hospital Information Management System as well as from patients’ charts. Data extracted included diagnosis at discharge, the reason for admission and thereafter assessed admission trends over the decade. We summarised …
