This essay draws attention to two problems in neuroscience’s set of assumptions. These self-defeating assumptions include: 1) the assumption that what the nervous system, especially the brain, does is synthesize experience, while also assuming philosophical realism, and 2) the problem of biological signal transduction. In the latter, neuroscientists and philosophers of biology have left unaddressed the issue that the signal differences between the inside and outside of the organismic boundary are of distinct ontological types; and yet no concern has been expressed regarding how it is possible that an organism’s inner states could reflect the experiential content flowing from outside …

Since its premiere in Stockholm in the winter of 1956, Long Day's Journey Into Night has been the holy grail of dramaturges around the world. It is the quintessential psychological thriller—entirely autobiographical yet universal in its depiction of stubbornly faithful and hateful familial ties. Suffering in the public domain for the duration of his life and career, playwright Eugene O'Neill finally put pen to paper and exorcised his life's demons in the conceptualization of this preeminent work. Finding Aid For The J.P. Coleman Collection (Mum01734)

J.P. Coleman served as governor of Mississippi between 1956 and 1960. In 1965, the claimed a seat on the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, gaining the rank of chief judge in 1979. Coleman assumed senior status in 1981, lightening his case load. He retired from the bench in 1984 and died in 1991. This collection contains Coleman's judicial papers from his tenure on the Fifth Circuit.

Claude F. Clayton served as a judge in the U.S. District Court of Northern Mississippi (1958-67) and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit (1967-69). His collection contains judicial files from his tenure on both courts. It also includes records from two unsuccessful campaigns for U.S. Congress in 1946 and 1948 and papers from his thirty-plus years of service in the Mississippi National Guard where he retired as major general and commander of the 31st Infantry Division.

The collection is chiefly a complete set of letters written between Grover H. Catt and Winnie Bethea Catt between 1940-1945. Letters span the period of time the two spent apart because of Grover's military service, including the period before their marriage in 1941 and excluding any time the two were able to live together throughout his military service. Photographs and miscellaneous other materials are also included.
