The purpose of this thesis is to provide insight on how arts integration in English language arts education increases engagement and achievement in students and teachers alike. Throughout my analysis of literature, local field research in two Central Florida public elementary schools, and my creation of a five-day arts-integrated writing unit, I found that arts integration, especially when utilizing Leonard Bernstein’s Artful Learning Method was observed to show a positive impact on students. Arts integration allowed for a child’s natural curiosity and instinct to create to take over, which created authentic learning experiences for the students. The research also demonstrated …

Cultural Institutions' Digital Responses To Covid-19 Temporary Closures, Brittany N. Ryder

The purpose of the study was to explore what types of digital content cultural institutions implemented during COVID-19 temporary closures and their effects on social media engagement. Existing research identified the role of digital content and social media in cultural institutions, but only in times of normal operations. The study adds to the existing literature by exploring types of digital content implemented, impacts on social media engagement, measures of social media engagement, and future implications in regard to COVID-19 temporary closures.

Freedom of speech jurisprudence in the United States and Germany is strikingly similar despite resulting in opposing views on the government’s ability to regulate and curtail white supremacist, Nazi-related, and extreme right-wing hate speech on the internet and social media. Recently, however, the Supreme Court has begun to open the door to the possibility of regulation when the speech constitutes a true threat. While still a higher standard to prove than that of Germany, it is now within Congress’s purview to regulate white supremacist, Nazi-related, and extreme right-wing hate speech as these ideologies proliferate and continue to hurt both citizens …

This Article looks at how this process metamorphosed Amnesty’s model of international solidarity. It looks at what it would take for Amnesty’s solidarity—and by extension that of other historically Northern-based international human rights groups—to become even more transformative. It is unique in two ways. First, it develops a new concept of the solidarity spectrum building on the emerging concept of transformative solidarity. This can be used to map collaborations between partners with different kinds of power—not only within the human rights movement, but also more broadly in civic, political and social organizing. The purpose of the study is to describe the correlation of self-perceived competency levels between novice and expert Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) in the perioperative setting. Self-reflection on competence enables CRNAs to know their most reliable and weakest performance characteristics; thus, they can improve the efficiency of their work performance across surgical settings. The proficiency of the anesthetist is important in surgical settings when the anesthesia provider is often performing independently. Psychometric instruments such as surveys can aid in evaluating perioperative performance, yet psychometric tools for explicitly assessing nurse anesthesia competence are limited. Background/aim: Symptomatic breast hypertrophy has a significant impact on the quality of life of women. The amount of tissue to be excised may be preoperatively estimated by an experienced surgeon. However, this remains a subjective assessment. Accurate quantification of the amount of breast tissue to be resected in the preoperative period will be a guide for both patient information and the surgeon during the operation. On January 4, 1931, Boris Pilnyak (1894-1938) wrote a letter to Joseph Stalin, pleading with the Soviet leader to grant him permission to travel to the United States in order to conduct research for an ambitious book project he was undertaking that would compare communist Russia favorably to capitalist America. Pilnyak’s request received official approval, and a few months later the writer set off for the U.S., arriving in New York by steamer on March 12, 1931, and remaining in the country until August 3, 1931. Ineffective corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategies harm the organizational brand, reputation, and financial growth. Business leaders who lack strategies to achieve CSR initiatives risk the profitability of their organizations. Grounded in stakeholder theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore CSR strategies leaders of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) use to sustain profitability. Four SME leaders who implemented successful CSR strategies and improved profitability in Maryland and Virginia participated in semistructured interviews. In 2017, researchers, advocates, & community members formed the Strengthening Colors of Pride team & set out to understand the lived experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, & other gender & sexual minority (LGBTQ+) people in the San Antonio Metro Area. Government lawyers are public servants and legal professionals. How they differ from private lawyers has much to do with whom they purport to represent and how they exercise power as a lawyer. I will look at a particular case-study—the St. Anne’s Residential school adjudication. This case study illustrates the challenges that government lawyers face in fulfilling their professional duty within a traditional private lawyer framework. St. Anne’s Residential School involved some of the most egregious physical, sexual and psychological abuse of Indigenous children between 1941 and 1972. Little work has been conducted on the intersections of queer and Appalachian identities, in part because these two identities are viewed as incompatible (Mann 2016). This study uses a multimodal critical discourse analytic approach to examine the Instagram posts of the Queer Appalachia Project, which represent a substantial body of discourse created by and for queer Appalachians. Of specific interest to this analysis are those posts which employ folkloric figures, such as West Virginia’s Mothman, to do identity work that is queer, Appalachian, and queer-Appalachian. This project seeks a linguistic understanding of oral personal narrative storytelling in Central Appalachia, particularly as it manifests in Eastern Kentucky, with aims of providing insight into the Appalachian storyteller trope (e.g., Montgomery 1998). Structural and discursive elements of oral personal narrative were identified and positioned within their sociocultural context through discourse analysis and narrative studies. Data were collected from story circles, a methodology first implemented in cultural and community organizing spaces in the South and throughout Appalachia (Roadside Theater 2014, Junebug Productions n.d.). In Wuhan (China) during the closing months of 2019 a spillover event occurred in which the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was transferred from its animal host population into humans 1, 2.
