"That Is Not The Way To Do It" Queerness, Race, And Citizenship In Rodgers And Hammerstein, Dennis Sloan

Communication & Theatre Faculty Publications

This article examines the ways in which Rodgers and Hammerstein's Asia-Pacific musicals - South Pacific, The King And I, and Flower Drum Song - mark characters of color with signs of queerness. It argues that Asian and Pacific characters are placed outside Cold War era ideals of American white heter-normativity in their performances of gender, their marriage practices, and the queer spaces they occupy, in ways that both encourage assimilation and make integration impossible.

Engaging patients in shared decision making (SDM) is a professional requirement since the Montgomery ruling in 2015. Endodontic treatments present a specific challenge to achieving SDM, both for the clinician and the patient. The treatments are often perceived as more challenging to complete by the clinician, and the assessment of risk and likely outcome requires a deep understanding of the (limited) evidence base. For the patient, decisions can be required at a time of acute symptoms and prolonged treatments. There are health literacy demands in comparison to some less complex dental treatments. Through intentionally designed authentic professional learning experiences, artist-teachers can be provided with opportunities of value. The purpose of this qualitative study is to increase understanding of the indicators of professional learning experiences within a community of practice that create value for arts educators. This qualitative study used a semi-structured interview protocol adapted from Wenger’s Value Creation Framework. Interviews were conducted with five artist-teachers in South Carolina who were identified as active participants of arts-specific professional learning. Architectural design often creates spaces that are accessible to many, but not all people. In particular, many buildings are designed for hearing people; those who design with accessibility in mind typically consider the needs of blind people and wheelchair users, but often neglect the needs of Deaf people. Thus, most built environments are hearing-centric and unconducive for Deaf people. Furthermore, the relationship between architecture and accessibility for people with disabilities did not become a priority in the United States until 1990 when the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was introduced. BACKGROUND: Almost in all types of surgical operations, patients experienced some kinds of anxiety which is reflected by a perceptible change in some vital signs. Music therapy is an emerging nonpharmacological intervention that had proven effectiveness in different medical conditions. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of music intervention on some vital signs in patients undergoing elective pelvic and lower limb surgery under spinal anesthesia. In a postcolonial Global South context, the representation of race seems to persist and is manifested through the media scripting of Black African sporting bodies that in effect extends the deployment of the “White gaze,” the effort to explore the Black body within the context of white supremacy. Through a qualitative content analysis of media texts in the Philippines, the paper illustrates how in a postmodern context racial stereotypes literally play out within Philippine collegiate basketball framed by the “White gaze” that expresses a covert form of racism that supports an essentialist deployment of categories of race. Arts education is a unique way to engage students. The arts include, but are not limited to, music, theatre, visual/studio arts, poetry, and dance; they are powerful bridges for students to knowledge and classroom contribution. They assist students with lower academic achievement, problematic behavior, or those who have a likelihood of dropping out of school. While there are plenty of resources displaying the student benefits, there remain inequalities in access to arts education among students across America. This study aimed at identifying the difficulties and problems that face drama and theater students at Yarmouk University. The population of the study included all drama and theater students in the Faculty of Fine Arts for the academic year 2013-2014, whose number was 270 male and female students who were randomly selected. The researcher used a questionnaire that consists of 45 items distributed on a three dimensions: the religious, the social and the academic dimensions. This thesis investigates how architecture can heal people by creating spaces that consider emotional needs. This exploration is developed through the design of a group home for children without parental support in Memphis, Tennessee. This thesis suggests that the solution to the problem of a place for children is not just providing shelter. Rather, the challenge is to create spaces that respond to their psychosocial needs in different stages of life. This design engages human psychology and particular human interaction in the community (in large and small groups) as well as providing spaces for individual expression.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of the employment of drama in improving the skills of solving verbal arithmetic problems to the students basic first grade in Rafah, researcher has used the experimental methodology, a sample of the students of the primary first grade (60) students were distributed to two equal groups, an experimental and a control of (30) pupils for each group.
