Nurture is a series of sculptural and performative works created to explore the emotional and psychological effects of objects as they relate to familial memory and the various processes one uses to nurture and express love. These moments incapsulate the need for comfort and connection, the need to be nourished, the need for protection, and the need to remember. The filmed interactions with each individual sculpture evoke the natural relationship of emotional release to the processes of remembering and healing.

From International Borders To The Honeycombing Of Internal Borders: Response To Covid-19 Pandemic, David E. Toohey

International Journal of Peace Studies

This article looks at borders during the Covid-19 crisis. In particular, it looks at how internal borders have arisen following xenophobic and national responses to Covid-19. This rise of internal borders is referred to as the honeycombing of borders. This article takes a genealogical approach to understand how borders have arisen—despite not always favorable opinions about them. Therefore, this looks at Rancière’s (1999; 2004) concept of the “police order” in the imposition of the sensible through Foucault’s genealogical approach, both to show the temporary, haphazard nature of these borders and how they revert to less desirable things. This chapter investigates a variety of ways in which music might be thought to be essentially spatial in relatively literal ways. It begins by considering whether certain spaces or spatial features are essential to musical works or performances. These include the space of a work’s composition, performance spaces for which a work is composed or within which it is performed, and the spatial disposition of performers (e.g., off-stage instruments). It then considers spaces “within” music, paying special attention to the notion of “pitch space”—the space in which we experience musical tones as higher or lower than one another and melodic …

Since the first such productions of the post-independence era, films directed by African filmmakers from former sub-Saharan French colonies have enjoyed very limited broadcast in theatres in France. Indeed, with very few exceptions, they have hardly been seen by French audiences at all. The image of the "festival film" - a label they were assigned - has had a significant negative impact, reinforcing their status as niche films reserved exclusively for film buffs. After a civil war that left more than 200 000 dead in Algeria in the 1990s, the return to peace in 2003 and the rise in the price of oil allowed Algerian cinema to return to the international scene. The state has invested several billion Algerian dinars since 2005 to revive film production and start renovating the country's four hundred movie theaters that had been abandoned since the late 1980s. Today, fifty-three movie theaters are functional throughout Algeria, yet they do not open their doors to the public. These movie theaters are still perceived as shady places, and they struggle …

Travelling by cart, but more often by train and later by automobile, films reached small towns and large villages alike. Travelling pictures were the first - and often the only - means of access to cinema for much of the African continent. They made it possible to reach the countryside, albeit randomly and sporadically.

To analyse the development of travelling pictures during the late colonial period, this article emphasises commercial, for-profit ventures rather than official, government-sponsored tours playing educational and propaganda films - though the line between the two was often blurred. Compared to other African countries and despite the potential size of its audience, until the beginning of the new millennium, Congo DRC seemed to be lagging behind in its local film production. Guido Convents' work on Congolese cinema from the earliest times to the present shows a portrait of cinematography around the Congo, which takes into account cinema "for Congolese, by Congolese or with Congolese actors" for lack of an indigenous productive centrality, if not limited to feature films directed by Mwezé Ngangura and recognized authors of the diaspora (Balufu Bakupa Kanyinda, among others). Spectacles Of Fire And Water: Performing The Destructive Forces Of Early Modern Naval Battles, Felicia M. Else

Art and Art History Faculty Publications

J. R. Mulryne’s study of the naval battle, or naumachia, staged in the Palazzo Pitti courtyard in Florence for the 1589 wedding of Ferdinando I de’ Medici and Christine of Lorraine points out the vivid, borderline unpleasant experience that audiences would have felt in such an enclosed space. This study takes inspiration from Mulryne’s work by looking at the pairing of water and fire in 16th century representations and performances of naval battles. An astounding level of manipulation and choreography was needed to bring together these two unpredictable and dangerous elements of nature. Contemporaries were struck by the wondrous but …

Islam arrived in North America primarily through the importation of Muslim African slaves. Subsequent suppression of the slaves, and by extension their religion and places of worship, generated a lack of understanding and misunderstanding about Islam. Over time, this misunderstanding evolved into xenophobic and orientalist representations of the religion. This Capstone project researches Islam’s roots in colonial America through the period before the Columbian Exposition of 1893, and its evolution after the Columbian Exposition, with defining time periods expressed as Erasure, Orientalism/Exoticism, and Americanization. We observe a proliferation of film festivals dedicated to Maghrebian and African cinemas in Europe. Several festivals include movies by directors from the Maghreb, the Near and Middle East, and Africa, as well as films by European filmmakers, descendants of immigrant parents. This phenomenon reflects the need for a visibility that continues to be lacking in European societies. It also shows the long process by which these guest workers settle in some European countries. Throughout history, dance is a powerful tool for expression of self or community. Art, especially dance, became a way to react to societal shifts and stalemates through means of storytelling. Through my choreography, I used history of modern dance such as the mother of modern dance, Isadora Duncan, an incredibly influential choreographer, Martha Graham, and her famous protege, Merce Cunningham. I used a combination of their methodology to choreograph my intrapersonal journey with dance and life.

The COVID-19 pandemic has threatening implications for all individuals; and has been particularly unsettling for immigrants. Given their unique positionality in the U.S., the intersectional discussion about the impact of this pandemic on immigrants and issues of family violence is salient. The position of some groups of immigrant women is even more precarious due to the increased dependency on their spouse/partner for emotional, economic and immigration-related reasons. While immigrants have been on the frontlines as responders for COVID-19, there are limited policies that provide them with healthcare, employment guarantee, or benefits. In an era of apprehension about climate change and the future of our planet, private companies are increasingly recognizing their role in increasing sustainability and lowering carbon emissions. To address this growing concern, some industry leaders are taking unilateral action to implement sustainable practices, but other companies have made agreements to fight emissions together. However, the Sherman Antitrust Act forbids agreements in restraint of trade. Further, antitrust law traditionally has refused to recognize ethical or moral justifications as legitimate reasons to permit anticompetitive agreements.
