Does Relative Energy In Sport Undermine Bone Health?, Regina Louise Schimek
Does Relative Energy In Sport Undermine Bone Health?, Regina Louise Schimek
Health Nutrition and Exercise Science
Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) is a term expanded from the female athlete triad the is inclusive to males and females and the negative physiological symptoms impacting athlete health and performance from low energy availability. Bone health is one of the ten health consequences of RED-S. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate RED-S in female and male collegiate athletes and determine if there is an association with bone health. Thirteen participants completed an electronic survey containing the LEAF-Q and EAT-26, a three-day food diary and exercise log, and a DXA scan. Energy intake and exercise expenditure …

Farming Democracy: American Agricultural Policy From The Great War To The Great Society, Amanda Belle Biles
History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies
In the days of the early republic, agriculture provided more than just an economic foundation; it shaped the country socially, and politically, too. Thomas Jefferson and others wrote at length of the role farming played in the American moral and political order, but by the turn of the twentieth century, agriculture’s share of the overall economy had declined, even as it became enmeshed in the emerging class question that was convulsing US politics. Farm policy followed that shift. While many historians of agricultural policy in the twentieth century limited their studies to the so-called farm bills and thus saw only …

'They Ain't Afraid Of No Ghosts': Dark Tourism At Historic Sites, Kaci Lynn Johnson
History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies
Dark tourism, a subsection of heritage tourism, is growing in popularity and center around historic sites and museums. Those sites are put in the position to take advantage of the surging popularity of dark tourism by offering programming that complements it. Ghost tours, paranormal investigations, and haunted houses have all been utilized by museums and historic sites to boost revenue and attendance numbers. The implementation of dark programming raises difficult discussions on the role of museums in society and the ethics of profiting off of ghosts, spirits, and the paranormal. The decision to produce dark programming as a complement to …

Social Justice And Liturgical Practice: Engaging The Earth/ Cultivating Solidarity, Daniel O'Dea Bradley

In North America, across the political spectrum, we have a strong tendency to reduce religion to nothing more than a tool to promote our own socio-political views. Tis is a natural consequence of our hyper-polarized culture and our impoverished view of “religion.” It is also, however, a problem—particularly for those inspired by the call to renewal through an integration of the quest for social justice and the pursuit of the spiritual life. By focusing on the value of participating in religious liturgy, I show how a renewed respect for religion can help the proponents of social justice fulfill some of …
Latching On To Information: Effects Of Information-Seeking Behavior On Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy, Amy Elaine Duchsherer
Latching On To Information: Effects Of Information-Seeking Behavior On Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy, Amy Elaine Duchsherer
Communication
Recommendations on breastfeeding in the United States suggest that infants should be exclusively breastfed for six months with continued breastfeeding in conjunction with complementary foods for at least one year. However, only 22.30% of women are exclusively breastfeeding when their infant reaches the age of six months, which indicates the existence of barriers hindering prolonged breastfeeding. In this study, I consider the factors related to information-seeking behavior that may influence breastfeeding rates. Specifically, I focus on the relationship between the sources a woman selects to receive information about breastfeeding and her level of breastfeeding self-efficacy, which has been shown to …
Predicting Disclosure Of Student Mental Health Problems To Instructors: A Communication Privacy Management Perspective, Emily Marie Haverkamp
Predicting Disclosure Of Student Mental Health Problems To Instructors: A Communication Privacy Management Perspective, Emily Marie Haverkamp
Communication
The transitional period of attending college marks a shift towards personal independence for students. The management of conversational topics requires students to determine how they share information. Management of mental health information is a critical topic that cannot be overlooked during these re-negotiation periods. The goal of this study was to examine how the five privacy rule development criteria (culture, context, motivation, risk/benefit gender) of Communication Privacy Management Theory predict a college student’s likelihood to reveal a mental health problem to their instructor. Using multiple regression, bivariate linear regression, and factorial ANOVA, this study revealed that the CPM rule development …

Developing And Validating Active Learning Engagement Strategies To Improve Students' Understanding Of Programming And Software Engineering Concepts, Tamaike Mariane Brown
Developing And Validating Active Learning Engagement Strategies To Improve Students' Understanding Of Programming And Software Engineering Concepts, Tamaike Mariane Brown
Computer Science
Introductory computer programming course is one of the fundamental courses in computer science. Students enrolled in computer science courses at the college or university have been reported to lack motivation, and engagement when learning introductory programming (CS1). Traditional classrooms with lecture-based delivery of content do not meet the needs of the students that are being exposed to programming courses for the first time. Students enrolled in first year programming courses are better served with a platform that can provide them with a self-paced learning environment, quicker feedback, easier access to information and different level of learning content/assessment that can keep …

Reintegration Through Architecture: Using Architectural Elements To Support The Process Of Reintegration For Survivors Of Human Trafficking, Paige Omberg
Architecture Theses
The project typology is transitional social housing for victims of human trafficking. Can a designer focus on location and connection to nature to best support and acknowledge the challenges faced in the process of reintegration into society? In this thesis, I will study the effects of utilizing architectural elements to best represent and support the transition of victims from captivity to social independence. Research strategies implemented include correlational research and logical argumentation.
Lights, Camera, Innovation: Architecture Without Limitation Through The Tool Of Cinematic Architecture, Marie Tucker
Lights, Camera, Innovation: Architecture Without Limitation Through The Tool Of Cinematic Architecture, Marie Tucker
Architecture Theses
Creativity is characterized by the ability to perceive the world in new ways, to find hidden patterns, to make connections between seemingly unrelated phenomena, and to generate solutions. Architects are creative to the extent that gravity and codes (and Engineers) will allow them to be. But when it comes to cinematic Architecture the possibilities of design are endless. Rules are basically thrown out the window and we can allow our minds to soar and make the impossible, possible. My project will be a fictional Microcosm of a city in a conceptual alternate world.
Sustainable Convenience, Jessica Harter
Sustainable Convenience, Jessica Harter
Architecture Theses
Globally, society is on the cusp of substantial environmental changes. These changes start with insight into the current state of the environment, mindset changes that need to be made, then to the necessary lifestyle changes. Accordingly, this research began with asking why communities haven’t been able to start making these changes, questioning what is it that is holding them back? Convenience. Communities have drilled in the concept of “convenience for the consumer” whereas now, there’s a dire need to switch to “convenience for the environment”. The question then becomes: What is it about convenience that is holding people back from …
Enviro-Braille: A Transcribed Language Of Architectural Elements, Laura Cragoe
Enviro-Braille: A Transcribed Language Of Architectural Elements, Laura Cragoe
Architecture Theses
Architecture has an immense effect on our perception of reality. The way one gains understanding of their surroundings depends heavily on stimulation of senses. The pitfall of designers is the consciousness paid to occupants who have an impaired sense of sight or blindness. It is the architect’s responsibility to make design decisions that cultivate environments that everyone can thrive in. Information for this research will be gathered by analyzing perception as it relates to the visually impaired and comparing the principles of language and semiotics to gain an understanding of how architecture is used as a tool of communication. From …

Impacts Of Banamine Injection On Pain Responses Of Either Rubber Ring Castrated And Tail Docked Or Surgically Castrated And Docked Lambs, Paige Porter Anderson
Animal Sciences
Our hypothesis was that administering Flunixin Meglumine (FM) to lambs that were both rubber ring castrated and docked or surgically castrated and emasculator docked would decrease behavioral stress, serum cortisol, haptoglobin concentration, and wound and swelling score, but increase average daily gain. Rambouillet ram lambs (n = 181) were allocated with a completely randomized design in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Treatment combinations included rubber ring castration and docking (on ram lambs with administration of saline or FM) or surgical castration and emasculator docking (on ram lambs with administration of saline or FM). Ram lambs were castrated …
Childhood Obesity: Developing Early Nutrition & Feeding Education For Parents At Well Child Visits, Ashley Lynn Benson
Childhood Obesity: Developing Early Nutrition & Feeding Education For Parents At Well Child Visits, Ashley Lynn Benson
Nursing
Childhood obesity is an extensive problem in the United States and North Dakota (CDC, 2014). Significant health consequences are linked to obesity, including type two diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular disease, cancers, and psychological disorders (Pandita et al., 2016; Xu & Mishra, 2018). Obesity comorbidities, previously presented in later adulthood, now emerge in younger populations (Pandita et al., 2016). Unfortunately, treatment of obesity is not effective, and therefore, prevention must be the primary focus (Daniels et al., 2015; Pandita et al., 2016). Diet and eating behaviors have a significant impact on weight, and children develop taste preferences and lifelong eating behaviors …
A Collaborative Hypertension Clinic Pilot Program In A Rural Primary Care, Nicole Catherine Pink
A Collaborative Hypertension Clinic Pilot Program In A Rural Primary Care, Nicole Catherine Pink
Nursing
In 2019, there were about seventy-million Americans with uncontrolled high blood pressure (BP) or hypertension (HTN) (Kitt, Fox, Tucker & McManus, 2019). Hypertension is the leading cause of preventable deaths worldwide (Stephen, Halcomb, McInnes, Batterham & Zwar, 2019). Uncontrolled HTN contributes to stroke, myocardial infarction, and renal failure, and is the most modifiable risk factor for heart disease and death (American Academy of Family Physicians [AAFP], 2019; Oparil & Schmider, 2015). Patients living in rural America have an increased prevalence of HTN and their access to preventative health services is lower (Buford, 2016; Caldwell, Ford, Wallace, Wang & Takahashi, 2016). …
Identification Of Disordered Eating Behaviors In Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes, Heather Erin Kranitz
Identification Of Disordered Eating Behaviors In Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes, Heather Erin Kranitz
Nursing
Type 1 diabetes is a life-long chronic condition that typically presents in childhood, and approximately 193,000 Americans under age 20 are estimated to have either Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes. Additionally, approximately 20-30% of adolescents with Type 1 diabetes have disordered eating behaviors or eating disorders. A common way disordered eating manifests in Type 1 diabetes is through manipulation of insulin dosages to promote hyperglycemia and subsequent weight loss. Disordered eating in diabetes can lead to short term complications such as diabetic ketoacidosis, severe hypoglycemia, and chronic long-term health conditions arising from complications of uncontrolled diabetes. Identification and screening …

‘Coronated’ Consumption In The Viral Market, Soonkwan Hong
‘Coronated’ Consumption In The Viral Market, Soonkwan Hong
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
The universal exposure to the virus has disrupted institutions, redefined values, and reshaped systems, including the market. Idling, uncertainty, and liquidity encapsulate the ever-precarious individual lives and the reflexive socio-politico-cultural changes. These conditions and consequences nonetheless create paradoxical opportunities in the viral market. The new meaning of connectivity that promotes high-viscosity relationships and high-visibility identities will transform the market to better acknowledge and support humans and the new sociality.

Investigating The Mechanism Driving Near-Tool Visual Biases, Robert Ryan Mcmanus
Investigating The Mechanism Driving Near-Tool Visual Biases, Robert Ryan Mcmanus
Psychology
Previous research has shown that when observers hold a tool, they experience action-oriented visual biases in the area around this tool that are similar to visual biases that exist around the hands. Some researchers have theorized this effect is due to the tool being incorporated into the body schema following active tool use, while others argue that this effect may simply be due to the tool’s visual salience. The goal of the present study was to test these competing explanations of near-tool visual biases. In the first experiment, participants completed a target detection task under one of three conditions: 1) …

Aging, Object-Based Inhibition, And Online Data Collection, Asenath Xochitl Arauza Huether
Psychology
Visual selective attention operates in space- and object-based frames of reference. Stimulus salience and task demands influence whether a space- or object-based frame of reference guides attention. I conducted two experiments for the present dissertation to evaluate age patterns in the role of inhibition in object-based attention. The biased competition account (Desimone & Duncan, 1995) proposes that one mechanism through which targets are selected is through suppression of irrelevant stimuli. The inhibitory deficit hypothesis (Hasher & Zacks, 1988) predicts that older adults do not appropriately suppress or ignore irrelevant information. The purpose of the first study was to evaluate whether …
Psychological Stress, Stress Reactivity And Blood Glucose Metabolization During Pregnancy, Anna Marie Strahm
Psychological Stress, Stress Reactivity And Blood Glucose Metabolization During Pregnancy, Anna Marie Strahm
Psychology
Gestational diabetes mellitus impacts between 3-10% of pregnancies, and increases the risk of pregnancy complications and lifelong health effects for mother and child (Bellamy, Casas, Hingorani, & Williams, 2009; Ross, 2006; Ryser Rüetschi et al., 2016). About half of cases occur without an evident risk factor (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), 1994; Dode & Santos, 2009). The present study was designed to examine possible psychophysiological connections linking psychological stress and stress reactivity, the magnitude of an individual’s response to stress, to blood sugar metabolization during mid-pregnancy between 24-28 weeks gestation. Participants were recruited from Sanford Health in Fargo, …

The goal of this paper was to apply aspects of the heuristic model advanced by Eisenberg, Cumberland, and Spinrad (1998)to the study of socialization that takes place in preschool and elementary school classrooms. Investigating socialization in this context is important given the number of hours students spend in school, the emotional nature of social interactions that take place involving teachers and students, and the emotions students often experience in the context of academic work. Guided by Eisenberg and colleagues’(1998) call to consider complex socialization pathways, we focus our discussion on ways teachers, peers, and the classroom context can shape students’ …

Parental Financial Education During Childhood And Financial Behaviors Of Emerging Adults, Ashley B. Lebaron, Erin K. Holmes, Bryce L. Jorgensen, Roy A. Bean
Faculty Publications
The purpose of this article was to determine whether overt financial education from parents during childhood (retrospective measure collected in the same survey wave) is associated with a greater frequency of healthy financial management behaviors in emerging adulthood, and whether this relationship is dependent on gender. Using a sample of emerging adults from the Flourishing Families dataset (N = 437), we ran two multivariate linear regressions—one with and one without the interaction variable. Results suggest that financial education from parents during childhood is linked with a greater frequency of healthy financial behaviors in emerging adulthood but was not dependent on …
