Behavioral Ecology Of The Bachman’S Sparrow (Peucaea Aestivalis), Joseph M. Niederhauser Jan 2020

Behavioral Ecology Of The Bachman’S Sparrow (Peucaea Aestivalis), Joseph M. Niederhauser

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Behavioral ecology is an integrative field that span many different topics from genes and physiology to ecology and evolutionary biology. In this dissertation, I studied territoriality, behavioral plasticity and syndromes, song learning, and natal dispersal in the Bachman’s sparrow (Peucaea aestivalis), an imperiled songbird that is understudied in many aspects of its behavior. In chapter one, I provide a background of behavioral ecology, the topics covered in this dissertation, and the Bachman’s sparrow. In chapter two, I determine if the ideal despotic distribution applies to Bachman’s sparrows. In chapter three, I examine whether two common personality traits, aggressiveness and boldness, …

An Investigation Into The Nursery Effect Of Select Reef Fishes Along The Southern Florida Coast, Andrew Pressly Jan 2020

An Investigation Into The Nursery Effect Of Select Reef Fishes Along The Southern Florida Coast, Andrew Pressly

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

The nursery effect is a process where juvenile fish utilize coastal habitats to help them survive before moving to their adult habitat. This process establishes an important link between marine ecosystems. This study examines the nursery effect and nursery habitat utilization in the Indian River Lagoon and Florida Bay systems, and the coral reefs adjacent to them. Quantitative and spatial techniques were utilized to identify patterns of presence and abundance and the size structure of select fish species. Spatial analyses were also used to investigate distribution patterns. Findings from this study suggest that several species utilize to a high degree …

Breaking The Mold: Implementing Radical Innovation At The District And School Levels, Joseph Holcombe Jan 2020

Breaking The Mold: Implementing Radical Innovation At The District And School Levels, Joseph Holcombe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Very little research exists around the implementation of innovative practices in traditional public schools. However, research indicates that innovation and creation of an organizational culture and climate that fosters innovation are both practices associated with improvement in overall organizational performance. This study aims to examine leadership practices, both at the school and district levels, which support the implementation of a radical innovation in traditional public schools. Specifically, this study asks three key questions: How did the plan to implement personalized learning develop, how did district and school leaders gain acceptance for the implementation, and how did Very little research exists …

Cerebrospinal Fluid Shunt System With Auto-Flow Regulation, Caner Mutlu Jan 2020

Cerebrospinal Fluid Shunt System With Auto-Flow Regulation, Caner Mutlu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

A cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunt system is used for treatment of hydrocephalus and abnormal intracranial pressure (ICP) conditions. Mostly a shunt system is placed under skin for creating a low resistance pathway between intracranial space and appropriate discharge sites within body by doing so excess CSF volume can exit the intracranial space. Displaced intracranial CSF volume normally results in lowered ICP. Thereby, a CSF shunt can manage ICP. In a healthy person, normal ICP is primarily maintained by CSF production and reabsorption rate as a natural tendency of body. If intracranial CSF volume starts increasing due to under reabsorption, this …

Characterization And Modeling Of Profiling Oceanographic Lidar For Remotely Sampling Ocean Optical Properties, Christopher Strait Jan 2020

Characterization And Modeling Of Profiling Oceanographic Lidar For Remotely Sampling Ocean Optical Properties, Christopher Strait

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Lidar has the ability to supplant or compliment many current measurement technologies in ocean optics. Lidar measures Inherent Optical Properties over long distances without impacting the orientation and assemblages of particles it measures, unlike many systems today which require pumps and flow cells. As an active sensing technology, it has the benefit of being independent of time of day and weather. Techniques to interpret oceanographic lidar lags behind atmospheric lidar inversion techniques to measure optical properties due to the complexity and variability of the ocean. Unlike in the atmosphere, two unknowns in the lidar equation backscattering at 180o () and …

Applying Blind Source Separation To Magnetic Anomaly Detection, Eric Nieves Jan 2020

Applying Blind Source Separation To Magnetic Anomaly Detection, Eric Nieves

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

The research shows a novel approach for the Magnetic Anomaly Differentiation and Localization Algorithm, which simultaneously localizes multiple magnetic anomalies with weak total field signatures (tens of nT). In particular, it focuses on the case where there are two homogeneous targets with known magnetic moments. This was done by analyzing the magnetic signals and adapting Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and Simulated Annealing (SA) to solve the problem statement. The results show the groundwork for using a combination of fastICA and SA to give localization errors of 3 meters or less per target in simulation and achieved a 58% success rate. …

Call Categorization And Vocal Behavior Of The Florida Manatee (Trichechus Manatus Latirostris), Beth A. Brady Jan 2020

Call Categorization And Vocal Behavior Of The Florida Manatee (Trichechus Manatus Latirostris), Beth A. Brady

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Florida manatees are semisocial marine mammals that vocalize when interacting with conspecifics and to maintain contact with offspring. While many aspects of their biology have been studied, there is a dearth of information on the diversity and complexity of vocal behavior during social, nonsocial, and stressful situations. Investigations of vocal communication repertoires which define, categorize, and correlate varied call types with behavior are needed in order to understand the behavioral and social function of associated calls. Arguably the most important social bond in manatees is the period of cow/calf dependency and empirical evidence indicates cows recognize the vocalizations of offspring. …

Combating Human Trafficking With The Law: A Content Analysis Of State Laws And Recommendations For Legal Reform, Caralin Branscum Jan 2020

Combating Human Trafficking With The Law: A Content Analysis Of State Laws And Recommendations For Legal Reform, Caralin Branscum

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Human trafficking is a heinous human rights violation, impacting as many as 40.3 million people around the globe (Global Slavery Index, 2018). In the United States of America (USA), the Trafficking Victims Protections Act of 2000 (TVPA), and its subsequent reauthorizations, comprise the bulk of the federal response to human trafficking. As a result, federal policies have received a lot of praise and scrutiny in the literature. However, less is known about statewide legislative efforts to combat human trafficking. To fill this gap, the current study analyzes state human trafficking statutes through content analysis. Overall, state legislation could best be …

Degenerative Decadence And Regenerative Militarism In The Invasion Narratives Of Robert W. Chambers And Erskine Childers, Lucas C. Townsend Jan 2020

Degenerative Decadence And Regenerative Militarism In The Invasion Narratives Of Robert W. Chambers And Erskine Childers, Lucas C. Townsend

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

This thesis explores fin de siècle theories of decadence, degeneration, criminology, and evolutionary biology, and their contemporary application to invasion literature written between 1871 and 1915. While there is significant criticism on early invasion narratives, there is little extant on Robert W. Chambers’s The King in Yellow (1895) and Erskine Childers’s The Riddle of the Sands (1903), especially in discussing the importance of their militaristic “calls to action” to convert weak, aesthetically-inclined men into hard-working patriotic soldiers and public servants. Through this conversion, the characters of Chambers and Childers serve as important role models that exemplify Max Nordau’s ideal “all-American …

Connected Multi-Domain Autonomy And Artificial Intelligence: Autonomous Localization, Networking, And Data Conformity Evaluation, Konstantinos Tountas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

The objective of this dissertation work is the development of a solid theoretical and algorithmic framework for three of the most important aspects of autonomous/artificialintelligence (AI) systems, namely data quality assurance, localization, and communications. In the era of AI and machine learning (ML), data reign supreme. During learning tasks, we need to ensure that the training data set is correct and complete. During operation, faulty data need to be discovered and dealt with to protect from -potentially catastrophic- system failures. With our research in data quality assurance, we develop new mathematical theory and algorithms for outlier-resistant decomposition of high-dimensional matrices …

Critical Evaluation Of Leachate Clogging Potential In Gravity Collection Systems And Management Solutions, Bishow Nath Shaha

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Leachate clogging in the Leachate Collection System (LCS) due to chemical precipitations and biofilms produced by microbial activities is a common phenomenon in any Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) landfill. This study focuses on quantifying the factors that impact the micro-environment of leachate; and microbial activities that help the precipitates to form and attach to the LCS. It also evaluates the performance of operational changes that have been implemented or the potential alternatives and recommends the possible measures to reduce the severity of clogging. A field scale side-by-side pipe network, and several laboratory setups were used in this study. Calcite is …

Development Of A Biosensor For Objectively Quantifying Odorants, Sharmily Rahman Jan 2020

Development Of A Biosensor For Objectively Quantifying Odorants, Sharmily Rahman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Nuisance odor levels produced by solid waste management operations are subject to regulatory standards due to their impacts on the quality of life of the residents living nearby the facility. Failure to meet regulatory standards may result in fines, litigation, inability to acquire permits, mitigation, and re-siting operations. Since measurement of environmental nuisance odors is currently limited to subjective techniques, monitoring odor levels to meet such standards is often problematic. This is becoming more acute as increasing residential populations begin to encroach on properties adjacent to landfills. In order to ensure that nuisance odor issues are minimized, it is necessary …

The Assembly History Of The Nearest S0 Galaxy Ngc 3115 From Its Kinematics Out To Six Half-Light Radii, Arianna Dolfi, Duncan A. Forbes, Warrick J. Couch, Anna Ferre-Mateu, Sabine Bellstedt, Kenji Bekki, Jonathan Diaz, Aaron J. Romanowsky, Jean P. Brodie

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Using new and archival data, we study the kinematic properties of the nearest field S0 galaxy, NGC 3115, out to ∼6.5 half-light radii (Re) from its stars (integrated starlight), globular clusters (GCs), and planetary nebulae (PNe). We find evidence of three kinematic regions with an inner transition at ∼0.2 Re from a dispersion-dominated bulge (Vrot/σ < 1) to a fast-rotating disc (Vrot/σ > 1), and then an additional transition from the disc to a slowly rotating spheroid at ∼ 2-2.5Re, as traced by the red GCs and PNe (and possibly by the blue GCs beyond ∼ 5Re). From comparison with simulations, we propose an assembly history in which …

The Theory And Craft Of Digital Preservation. By Trevor Owens. [Review], Carli Lowe

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The world of digital materials presents archivists with many opportunities to access, present, and engage with materials in more flexible ways. Of course, this also presents challenges, including feeling like we do not know the “right” way to proceed, or knowing that we lack the resources to proceed the way we believe is best. In The Theory and Craft of Digital Preservation, Trevor Owens offers a set of frameworks and concepts related to digital preservation with the expectation that an understanding of a few basic principles will provide an informational foundation, allowing archivists to respond with professional expertise and creativity …

Evolution Of Integration, Build, Test, And Release Engineering Into Devops And To Devsecops, Vishnu Pendyala

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Software engineering operations in large organizations are primarily comprised of integrating code from multiple branches, building, testing the build, and releasing it. Agile and related methodologies accelerated the software development activities. Realizing the importance of the development and operations teams working closely with each other, the set of practices that automated the engineering processes of software development evolved into DevOps, signifying the close collaboration of both development and operations teams. With the advent of cloud computing and the opening up of firewalls, the security aspects of software started moving into the applications leading to DevSecOps. This chapter traces the journey …

An Oceanographic Perspective On Early Human Migrations To The Americas, Thomas C. Royer, Bruce Finney Jan 2020

An Oceanographic Perspective On Early Human Migrations To The Americas, Thomas C. Royer, Bruce Finney

OES Faculty Publications

Early migrants to the Americas were likely seaworthy. Many archaeologists now agree that the first humans who traveled to the Americas more than 15,000 years before present (yr BP) used a coastal North Pacific route. Their initial migration was from northeastern Asia to Beringia where they settled for thousands to more than ten thousand years. Oceanographic conditions during the Last Glacial Maximum (18,000-24,000 yr BP) would have enhanced their boat journeys along the route from Beringia to the Pacific Northwest because the influx of freshwater that drives the opposing Alaska Coastal Current was small, global sea level was at least …

Quantifying Seagrass Distribution In Coastal Water With Deep Learning Models, Daniel Perez, Kazi Islam, Victoria Hill, Richard Zimmerman, Blake Schaeffer, Yuzhong Shen, Jiang Li Jan 2020

Quantifying Seagrass Distribution In Coastal Water With Deep Learning Models, Daniel Perez, Kazi Islam, Victoria Hill, Richard Zimmerman, Blake Schaeffer, Yuzhong Shen, Jiang Li

OES Faculty Publications

Coastal ecosystems are critically affected by seagrass, both economically and ecologically. However, reliable seagrass distribution information is lacking in nearly all parts of the world because of the excessive costs associated with its assessment. In this paper, we develop two deep learning models for automatic seagrass distribution quantification based on 8-band satellite imagery. Specifically, we implemented a deep capsule network (DCN) and a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) to assess seagrass distribution through regression. The DCN model first determines whether seagrass is presented in the image through classification. Second, if seagrass is presented in the image, it quantifies the seagrass …

Uniformly Resolvable Decompositions Of Kv In 1-Factors And 4-Stars, Melissa S. Keranen, Donald L. Kreher, Salvatore Milici, Antoinette Tripodi

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

If X is a connected graph, then an X-factor of a larger graph is a spanning subgraph in which all of its components are isomorphic to X. A uniformly resolvable {X, Y }-decomposition of the complete graph Kv is an edge decomposition of Kv into exactly r X-factors and s Y -factors. In this article we determine necessary and sufficient conditions for when the complete graph Kv has a uniformly resolvable decompositions into 1-factors and K1,4-factors.

Performance Across Worldview-2 And Rapideye For Reproducible Seagrass Mapping, Megan M. Coffer, Blake A. Schaeffer, Richard C. Zimmerman, Victoria Hill, Jiang Li, Kazi A. Islam, Peter J. Whitman

OES Faculty Publications

Satellite remote sensing offers an effective remedy to challenges in ground-based and aerial mapping that have previously impeded quantitative assessments of global seagrass extent. Commercial satellite platforms offer fine spatial resolution, an important consideration in patchy seagrass ecosystems. Currently, no consistent protocol exists for image processing of commercial data, limiting reproducibility and comparison across space and time. Additionally, the radiometric performance of commercial satellite sensors has not been assessed against the dark and variable targets characteristic of coastal waters. This study compared data products derived from two commercial satellites: DigitalGlobe's WorldView-2 and Planet's RapidEye. A single scene from each platform …

Citizenship Denied: Implications Of The Naturalization Backlog For Noncitizens In Military, Ming Hsu Chen Jan 2020

Citizenship Denied: Implications Of The Naturalization Backlog For Noncitizens In Military, Ming Hsu Chen

Faculty Scholarship

The immigration system is in crisis. Long lines of asylum seekers at the border and immigrants in the interior spend years waiting for their day in immigration court. This is true in the agencies that process appli- cations for immigration benefits from legal immigrants as well. Since 2016, delays in naturalization have increased to historic proportions. The problem is even worse for military naturalizations, where delays are ac- companied by denials and overall declines in military naturalizations. It is the latest front in the battle on legal migration and citizenship. These impediments to citizenship demonstrate an extreme form of policies …

Soul Food: [Re]Framing The African-American Farming Crisis Using The Culture-Centered Approach, Andrew Laurence Carter, Adam Alexander Jan 2020

Soul Food: [Re]Framing The African-American Farming Crisis Using The Culture-Centered Approach, Andrew Laurence Carter, Adam Alexander

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Historically, African-American farmers faced a long and challenging struggle to own land and operate independently. In recent years, several factors, including unfair policy legislation, institutionalized racism, the mechanization of agriculture, and increases in agricultural technology have exacerbated land loss and decreases in farm ownership. Currently, African-American farmers are vastly underrepresented, comprising just 2% of the nation's farmers, 0.5% of farmland and 0.2% of total agricultural sales. As a site for inquiry, this topic has been examined across many academic sub-disciplines, however, the literature has not yet explored how the erasure of the African-American farmer influences the conversation about broader diet-related …

A Method For Balancing Provider Schedules In Outpatient Specialty Clinics, Bjorn P. Berg, S. Ayca Erdogan, Jennifer Mason Lobo, Kathryn Pendleton Jan 2020

A Method For Balancing Provider Schedules In Outpatient Specialty Clinics, Bjorn P. Berg, S. Ayca Erdogan, Jennifer Mason Lobo, Kathryn Pendleton

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Background. Variability in outpatient specialty clinic schedules contributes to numerous adverse effects including chaotic clinic settings, provider burnout, increased patient waiting times, and inefficient use of resources. This research measures the benefit of balancing provider schedules in an outpatient specialty clinic. Design. We developed a constrained optimization model to minimize the variability in provider schedules in an outpatient specialty clinic. Schedule variability was defined as the variance in the number of providers scheduled for clinic during each hour the clinic is open. We compared the variance in the number of providers scheduled per hour resulting from the constrained optimization schedule …
