Numerous climate-related emergencies highlight the challenges and urgency posed by climate change: the 2018 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Report, the Global Climate Action Summit in California and international student walkouts, to name a few. While the IPCC Report sent an urgent cry to reduce total emissions and to achieve specific results—45% reduction by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050—reductions need to be combined with capturing and storing atmospheric carbon dioxide. Scientific studies have shown that an annual increase of 0.4% of carbon stored in soils would make it possible to stop the present increase in atmospheric CO2.

Citizenship Denied: Implications Of The Naturalization Backlog For Noncitizens In The Military, Ming H. Chen
Citizenship Denied: Implications Of The Naturalization Backlog For Noncitizens In The Military, Ming H. Chen
Publications
The immigration system is in crisis. Long lines of asylum seekers at the border and immigrants in the interior spend years waiting for their day in immigration court. This is true in the agencies that process applications for immigration benefits from legal immigrants as well. Since 2016, delays in naturalization have increased to historic proportions. The problem is even worse for military naturalizations, where delays are accompanied by denials and overall declines in military naturalizations. It is the latest front in the battle on legal migration and citizenship.
These impediments to citizenship demonstrate an extreme form of policies collectively dubbed …

While The Water Is Stirring: Sojourner Truth As Proto-Agonist In The Fight For (Black) Women’S Rights, Lolita Buckner Inniss
Publications
This Essay argues for a greater understanding of Sojourner Truth’s little-discussed role as a proto-agonist (a marginalized, long-suffering forerunner as opposed to a protagonist, a highly celebrated central character) in the process that led up to the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment. Though the Nineteenth Amendment failed to deliver on its promise of suffrage for black women immediately after its enactment, black women were stalwarts in the fight for the Amendment and for women’s rights more broadly, well before the ratification of the Amendment and for many years after its passage. Women’s rights in general, and black women’s rights in …

Most importantly, the panelists grapple with questions courts are likely to have to address, including the definition of personal information under the CCPA, the application …
(Un)Common Law And The Female Body, Lolita Buckner Inniss
(Un)Common Law And The Female Body, Lolita Buckner Inniss
Publications
A dissonance frequently exists between explicit feminist approaches to law and the realities of a common law system that has often ignored and even at times exacerbated women’s legal disabilities. In The Common Law Inside the Fe-male Body, Anita Bernstein mounts a challenge to this story of division. There is, and has long been, she asserts, a substantial interrelation between the common law and feminist jurisprudential approaches to law. But Bernstein’s central argument, far from disrupting broad understandings of the common law, is in keeping with a claim that other legal scholars have long asserted: decisions according to precedent, …

It applies behavioral law and economics and information economics to advance legal policies to reduce CRAAP. Finally, this Article advocates changing individual and social attitudes about deafness and hearing loss to raise political awareness and social consciousness about NIHL and NIHHL. One way to change our attitudes is by practicing compassion, empathy, and kindness, including Loving-Kindness Mindfulness …
Understanding Well-Being Among Black Female Student Activists Attending Predominantly White Institutions: A Narrative Inquiry Approach, Stephen Grey
Theses and Dissertations
As engagement in activism continues to increase on campus and nationally, a paucity of research exists on the experiences of Black student activists attending PWI and their well-being. Narrative inquiry was utilized in this study to better understand the lived experiences of two Black student activists. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with both participants to gain in-depth narratives of their experiences engaging in activism on PWIs. A narrative thematic approach was used to analyze the results. The findings suggested that the Black student participants experienced benefits (increased sense of belonging and racial cohesion) and consequences (activist burnout and decreased academic performance) …
Simulation Of Notch Driven Hydraulic Fracture In Open Hole Completion, Nejma Djabelkhir
Simulation Of Notch Driven Hydraulic Fracture In Open Hole Completion, Nejma Djabelkhir
Theses and Dissertations
Hydrocarbon production from unconventional plays, including shale oil and gas, has begun in the USA since nearly two decades ago and experienced a rapid growth. Horizontal drilling and multistage hydraulic fracturing (HF) are the prime technologies in development and stimulation of unconventional reservoirs. Open hole (OH) and cased hole (CH) are the primary completion methods used in unconventional reservoirs. OH compared to cased hole (CH) completion is more desired as it requires less operation cost and time while it results in more production due to larger area of wellbore exposure to the formation. However, OH completion is susceptible to near …
Sexism, Gender Identity, And Psychological Well-Being: Examining Women’S Reactions To A Social Identity Threat, Wendy Nicole Fisher
Sexism, Gender Identity, And Psychological Well-Being: Examining Women’S Reactions To A Social Identity Threat, Wendy Nicole Fisher
Theses and Dissertations
For women, sexism is an unavoidable experience and perceiving one’s self as a victim of sexism can have detrimental effects on psychological well-being. However, situational factors, such as level of sexism, and individual differences in gender-related beliefs can influence whether women attribute negative experiences and outcomes to sexism and the degree to which they are impacted by sexism. The current two-part study examined how women responded to sexist feedback depending on the level and target of sexism, as well as individual differences in gender identity and endorsement of sexism. The impact of sexist feedback on women’s psychological well-being was also …

Online Comment Incivility And Its Impact On Social Perceptions Of Stalking, Abigail Marie Kroke
Theses and Dissertations
Much research has investigated the impact of online incivility on people’s opinions of controversial topics, but less has focused on social perceptions of personal disclosure-related online posts, despite large online-based social movements such as #MeToo. The current study focuses on stalking and will enable a better understanding of how stalking is perceived. There are two main study objectives: to examine social perceptions of an online disclosure by a target of stalking behavior and to examine the role of online incivility on mood and social perceptions of stalking. Overall, both men and women responded similarly to the stalking scenario. Participants expressed …

Identifying Active Kelvin–Helmholtz Vortices On Saturn's Magnetopause Boundary, B. L. Burkholder, P. A. Delamere, Jay R. Johnson, C.- S. Ng

For Cassini magnetopause encounters, we analyse plasma and magnetic fields. The boundary can be unstable to the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability (KHI), which can drive large‐scale flows identifiable in plasma measurements. Bulk flow reversed from the expected direction near the magnetopause can indicate vorticity associated with active KH, and events are found dominantly in the dawn–subsolar region. KHIs are also responsible for magnetic field fluctuations, and hybrid simulations indicate heating, and transport is significant in an actively growing vortex. Cassini observations are filtered for disturbed magnetic fields near the magnetopause, similar to the signatures from hybrid simulations, with significant fluctuation and current …

In this work, a compact, mobile phone-based ECL sensor apparatus was developed using the phone cameras, screen-printed electrodes (SPE), and mobile app for dopamine detection. Methods of DC voltage application for ECL reaction were comprehensively studied from the mobile phone itself or external power. Under optimized sensing conditions, with disposable carbon SPE and 20 mM coreactant tri-n-propylamine (TPrA), acceptable repeatability and reproducibility were achieved in terms of relative standard deviation (RSD) of intra- and interassays, which were 6.7 and 5.5%, respectively. The biochemical compound dopamine was measured due to its ECL quenching characteristics and its clinical importance. The …

A Guide To Ligo–Virgo Detector Noise And Extraction Of Transient Gravitational-Wave Signals, Tiffany Summerscales, Ligo Scientific Collaboration And The Virgo Collaboration
Faculty Publications
The LIGO Scientific Collaboration and the Virgo Collaboration have cataloged eleven confidently detected gravitational-wave events during the first two observing runs of the advanced detector era. All eleven events were consistent with being from well-modeled mergers between compact stellarmass objects: black holes or neutron stars. The data around the time of each of these events have been made publicly available through the gravitationalwave open science center. The entirety of the gravitational-wave strain data from the first and second observing runs have also now been made publicly available. There is considerable interest among the broad scientific community in understanding the data …

Natural disasters have been shown to influence support for incumbent governments and political systems in a variety of circumstances. We argue that natural disasters can exhibit a “Rally ’Round the Flag” effect, boosting support for incumbent governments, similar to that observed in international conflict. Leveraging an in-process data collection effort in Nepal that was interrupted by a major earthquake in April 2015, we find evidence that this disaster induced a rally effect. Post-earthquake, support for the political system in Nepal increased. We find this effect implementing both a propensity score matching design and a pre-post test in which the same …
"Undue Hardship" And Uninsured Americans: How Access To Healthcare Should Impact Student-Loan Discharge In Bankruptcy, Alexander Gouzoules
"Undue Hardship" And Uninsured Americans: How Access To Healthcare Should Impact Student-Loan Discharge In Bankruptcy, Alexander Gouzoules
Emory Law Journal Online
Student-loan debt has grown to unprecedented heights. Contributing to the severe burden imposed by these debts is the Bankruptcy Code’s unique presumption that they are not dischargeable. To overcome that presumption, a debtor must establish that repayment of her loans would constitute an “undue hardship.” This Essay examines the disagreement among bankruptcy courts that have interpreted the “undue hardship” standard in situations where a debtor is unable to afford health insurance—a common occurrence among the economically disadvantaged. After examining recent healthcare reforms, I argue that Congress has expressed a judgment that all Americans should obtain minimum essential healthcare. Though this …

The Impact Of Artificial Intelligence On Forensic Accounting And Testimony--Congress Should Amend "The Daubert Rule" To Include A New Standard, Victor Nicholas A. Metallo
Emory Law Journal Online
This Essay attempts to address the current issues and legal implications surrounding the use of artificial intelligence by forensic accounting experts and its importance to forensic accounting research. It reviews existing law, proposes changes to the Federal Rules of Evidence for using artificial intelligence in the courtroom, and covers emerging technology a forensic accountant may encounter, such as blockchain, cryptocurrency, “smart contracts,” machine learning, and algorithmic entities. Finally, the Essay concludes that the changes to the rules should encompass standards to account for artificial intelligence reliability and argues forensic accounting experts and all forensic experts are needed even more in …
Faithless Or Faithful Electors? An Analogy To Disobedient But Conscientious Jurors, Jeffrey Abramson
Faithless Or Faithful Electors? An Analogy To Disobedient But Conscientious Jurors, Jeffrey Abramson
Emory Law Journal Online
Do delegates to the Electoral College have any discretion in how they vote for President or Vice President? Two pending cases call upon the Supreme Court to answer this question. This Essay draws a comparison between disobedient jurors and so-called “faithless” electors. Both jurors and electors make a pledge to follow their instructions. However, we do not punish jurors who violate their oaths in order to discharge their duty as they see fit. We do not even call them “faithless.” We call them conscientious. This Essay explores whether electors are another example of government actors who are bound by an …

Fracking In A World With Fiduciary Duties: A Suggestion For The Future, Kathryn White
Emory Business Law Review
Big businesses are regulated by a variety of sources. Depending on the industry, influencers and regulators range from local municipalities to agencies of the federal government. This Comment seeks to analyze the In re Clovis Oncology, Inc. decision, and the clear message the majority opinion sends to directors and agents of corporations: one’s fiduciary duties are indispensable obligations, irrespective of the occupational field at issue. By applying the Clovis principles to fracking companies, this Comment will encourage proactive, dynamic, and bold directors to change their reporting requirements before a shift in societal interests and concerns could expose them to liability.
