An Exploration Of Fertility Preservation-Related Decision-Making In Childhood Cancer Patients, Vani Addepalli Jan 2020

An Exploration Of Fertility Preservation-Related Decision-Making In Childhood Cancer Patients, Vani Addepalli

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

As medical research expands to include a vast variety of new treatments and the world becomes increasingly interconnected, the ethics involving patient care and treatment plan development also become extremely important to consider. One of the most novel and widely unexplored fields of reproductive health is oncofertility, a field of medicine that aims to minimize the negative impacts of cancer treatment on fertility. For many childhood cancer patients, cancer treatment involves oncofertility-related discussions that involve their families, physicians, and many other people. This paper serves primarily to evaluate the quality of educational and clinical resources available to childhood cancer patients …

The History, Chemistry, And Regulation Of Cosmetics, Carly E. Cook Jan 2020

The History, Chemistry, And Regulation Of Cosmetics, Carly E. Cook

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Cosmetics have played an integral part in beautifying humankind for tens of thousands of years. The practice of people enhancing their natural features dates back several millennia before written text to ancient Egyptian and other early civilizations. Throughout time, these augmentation methods have been studied and perfected to create what is now a multibillion-dollar industry. The earliest forms of cosmetics derived from locally available natural resources but over time transformed to incorporate synthetic and potentially harmful substances including lead, formaldehyde, and benzophenone. The objective of this thesis is to investigate the timeline of cosmetic use and to inquire into the …

Venetian National Identity: An Ethno-Symbolic Approach, Gianni Croci Jan 2020

Venetian National Identity: An Ethno-Symbolic Approach, Gianni Croci

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Ethno-symbolism is the study of nationalism through symbols and myths. Anthony D. Smith argued that nations are created from the shared memories of a core ethnie. This thesis applies Smith‘s framework to the Venetian population in Italy. Modern Venetians based their national identity on the Myth of Venice, positive memories about the independent Republic which existed from 697-1797. Venetian national identity developed in three waves. First, the Myth was molded from a cultural explosion in the face of political decadence during Il Settecento (Eighteenth Century). Then, Venetian intellectuals idealized their past in order to join the Kingdom of Italy during …

The Liberty To Sell Sex: The Case For Regulation Of Legal Prostitution In The United States, Gianni Croci Jan 2020

The Liberty To Sell Sex: The Case For Regulation Of Legal Prostitution In The United States, Gianni Croci

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Prostitution is a controversial service which went through periods of legalization and criminalization in American history. The main problem is a social taboo which considers prostitution to be morally wrongful and a social nuisance. After the Progressive Era, Congress outlawed sexual acts it deemed immoral using Commerce Clause powers. Since the sexual revolution of the 1960s, legislation regulating sex devolved to the states. Currently, prostitution is banned in forty-nine states. I argue that prostitution should not be abolished because it is not inherently harmful, it is not an immoral act, and it has liberty interests found within the United States …

Plato’S Rejection Of Poetry: A Defense Of Falsehoods And Imitations In The Republic, Jeremy O.N. Garcia-Diaz Jan 2020

Plato’S Rejection Of Poetry: A Defense Of Falsehoods And Imitations In The Republic, Jeremy O.N. Garcia-Diaz

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

In various Platonic dialogues, Socrates appears to discredit myth and fiction. Most notably in the Republic, he seems to argue that poetry is harmful due to its false nature and its relation to imitation which misleads those who experience it about the nature of the good. Yet, in many of these same dialogues, Socrates makes multiple appeals to myths, either using the previously constructed myths of others, or constructing stories of his own. Given that the dialogues themselves are fictionalized conversations written by Plato, a student of Socrates, he himself cannot categorically reject fictional stories. I argue that Plato’s critical …

Abortion Reexamined: A Closer Look At Moral Status, Katherine Hernandez Jan 2020

Abortion Reexamined: A Closer Look At Moral Status, Katherine Hernandez

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Roe vs. Wade, a landmark case in which the Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution protects a pregnant woman's liberty to choose to have an abortion, has been recently challenged. Although public opinion shows that most Americans oppose overturning Roe, various states have introduced legislation to force the court to reconsider the issue. Drawing on the work of philosopher Mary Anne Warren, I argue that while the fetus is worthy of moral consideration it is not yet worthy of personhood and cannot be granted greater legal rights than the mother; and that Roe as it stands today already provides an …

For The Love Of My Country: Investigating Predictors Of Anxious And Avoidant Attachment To The U.S.A., Sara Haman Jan 2020

For The Love Of My Country: Investigating Predictors Of Anxious And Avoidant Attachment To The U.S.A., Sara Haman

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

National attachment refers to the emotional bond one forms with the abstract conception of a nation, similar to how one might imagine a relationship with a god. Although there is a multidisciplinary literature investigating the effects and antecedents of national attachment, there is a distinct lack of research into patterns of national attachment informed by attachment theory. I review the national attachment literature in order to frame the argument for why national attachment ought to be examined from an attachment theory approach. Then, I conduct a study with 217 American adults exploring the associations between two dimensions of national attachment …

Geographic Distribution Of Okenia Hypogaea And Soil Analysis Along The Coast Of John D. Macarthur Beach State Park, Makenna King Jan 2020

Geographic Distribution Of Okenia Hypogaea And Soil Analysis Along The Coast Of John D. Macarthur Beach State Park, Makenna King

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Okenia hypogaea is a rare vine-like dune plant found only in Mexico and five counties on Florida’s southeast coast, from St. Lucie to Miami-Dade County. At John D. MacArthur Beach State Park, GPS coordinates of all Okenia hypogaea within the park were collected to create a map. I repeated this process following substantial beach erosion, caused by Hurricane Dorian, to compare growth patterns and geographic distribution. This data can be utilized by park officials when managing this species. Soil analysis along the same 1.3-mile stretch of beach was done to evaluate environmental parameters impacting Okenia’s distribution and growth. Ten samples …

Yes Douglas Husak, Drunk Driving Is A Serious Offense., Brittany Kurland

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Drunk driving is a serious offense, but often goes unnoticed because no harm is often caused by the person committing such a selfish act. Where there is an accident, fatal or minor, the individual is punished for driving while intoxicated. While many theorists believe that it is inappropriate to punish one who has a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) over the legal limit of .08%, I propose that regardless of the individual harming or not harming another, the person who is driving while intoxicated should face punishment. It should not matter if the driver did not show any signs of impairment …

Using Drones For Studying Florida Manatees (Trichechus Manatus Latirostris), Abigail Lenhart Jan 2020

Using Drones For Studying Florida Manatees (Trichechus Manatus Latirostris), Abigail Lenhart

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Species monitoring, population assessments, and behavioral observations of many endangered marine mammals are typically limited to surveys of animal surfacings due to the challenges of detecting and tracking individuals that usually live in remote areas. This study demonstrates the benefits of using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones, as a noninvasive and low-cost method to monitor and observe Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) populations. We conducted several flights using a small multirotor drone to detect manatees in a warm-water refuge area at Round Island Riverside Park in Indian River County, Florida. Through the use of aerial videos, we confirmed three …

Dietary Analysis Of The Florida East Coast Diamondback Terrapin ( Malaclemys Terrapin Tequesta ), Davidsamuel Torres Jan 2020

Dietary Analysis Of The Florida East Coast Diamondback Terrapin ( Malaclemys Terrapin Tequesta ), Davidsamuel Torres

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

The diamondback terrapin ( Malaclemys terrapin ) is the only exclusively estuarine turtle. Terrapins live in coastal mangroves and salt marshes ranging from Massachusetts to Texas. While previous studies have documented the diet of terrapins in temperate salt marshes, the diet of the Florida East Coast terrapin subspecies ( M. terrapin tequesta) living in mangrove habitats is largely unknown. Other diamondback subspecies feed on a variety of prey categories, with plants, gastropods, and bivalves being the most dominant, depending on the subspecies. For my thesis research, I examined the diet of M. terrapin tequesta from the Indian River Lagoon by …

Assessing The Development Of Tolerance To Amphetamine Using C. Elegans, Dayana Torres Valladares Jan 2020

Assessing The Development Of Tolerance To Amphetamine Using C. Elegans, Dayana Torres Valladares

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Amphetamine (AMPH) is a potent psychostimulant and is a known substance of abuse, also used to treat attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy. AMPH acts at the dopaminergic neurons through the dopamine transporter (DAT), and it leads to DAT-mediated efflux, resulting in an overall increase of dopamine (DA) in the synaptic cleft. It is known that exposure to AMPH may cause sensitization and/or tolerance. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying tolerance to AMPH are not yet well understood. Because DA has an inhibitory effect in C. elegans’ locomotion, the animals fail to sustain their normal swimming behavior when exposed to AMPH and …

The Salem Witch Trials Of 1692: Bewitchment And Belief In 17th-Century New England, Kyle Owen Jan 2020

The Salem Witch Trials Of 1692: Bewitchment And Belief In 17th-Century New England, Kyle Owen

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

The Salem Witch Trials have perplexed historians for years. The true causes of these events remain uncertain. Causal theories have developed; around religious and occultist beliefs, ergotism, the Indian Wars, and village factionalism. This thesis explores each theory and concludes that religious and occultist beliefs were the main cause behind the hysteria that led to the bloodshed of the trials. Puritan theology involved belief in a literal Devil, which led to other occultist beliefs related to witches and witchcraft. Therefore, witchcraft and witch lore are a part of these occultist beliefs which were alive and well in Salem in 1692.

Caregiver Burden And Its Effects On The Diet And Nutritional Status Of Family Caregivers Of The Older Adult With Dementia, Abigail Nwiloh Jan 2020

Caregiver Burden And Its Effects On The Diet And Nutritional Status Of Family Caregivers Of The Older Adult With Dementia, Abigail Nwiloh

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Dementia is a disease commonly found in older adults which impairs proper cognitive function and the ability of dementia patients to carry out daily tasks. Hence, there is a need for caregivers who can assist the patients by taking them through their daily living activities. Prior research has primarily been focused on the impact of this disease on the patient's quality of living without shedding ample light on the struggles that caregivers face. Caregivers undergo high-stress levels relative to the number of tasks they carryout for their patients and other contributing factors. Burdens that each dementia caregiver faces can take …

“What Role Do Dental Prescriptions Play In The Opioid Crisis?”, Palak Shah Jan 2020

“What Role Do Dental Prescriptions Play In The Opioid Crisis?”, Palak Shah

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 47,000 individuals died in 2017 due to an opioid overdose. Further, dentists are more likely to prescribe immediate-release opioids than other healthcare providers. In the late 1990s, dentists were responsible for 15.5% of prescriptions for immediate-release opioids, and 8% of these prescriptions in 2009. In this thesis I examine the reasons for this, including the ways in which a patient’s sex, age, race, and ethnicity play a role in dental prescriptions, and conclude that dentists do not consistently use the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMPs) or the guidelines set by …

A Computational Study Of The Drosophila Melanogaster Circadian Clock., Laura Páez Jan 2020

A Computational Study Of The Drosophila Melanogaster Circadian Clock., Laura Páez

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Drosophila melanogaster has an internal clock that controls sleep and waking behaviors and allows it to function appropriately on a daily cycle. The internal clock has a natural cycle about 24h-long that can be observed even in complete darkness, but also uses light cues to remain in sync with the actual day-night cycle. In this work, I use a computational model of the Drosophila clock to study the effect of varying intensities of light and duration of daytime on the period of the oscillations. The model tracks 15 clock molecules and their interactions to predict the evolution of their concentrations.

Religious Identities: Varieties Of Collective Consciousness, Reilly Alexander Stanton Kalani Jan 2020

Religious Identities: Varieties Of Collective Consciousness, Reilly Alexander Stanton Kalani

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

As an interdisciplinary endeavor, the study of consciousness is informed by a variety of scholarly perspectives that, when integrated, deepen our understanding of consciousness as a functional system of semiotic communication. This thesis explores linguistic behavior as a manifestation of collective consciousness via the incorporation of theory from psychology, sociology, and philosophy into an analytical framework for studying consciousness. Using this analytical framework, I present an analysis of patterns of linguistic behavior from online religious communitas on reddit.com. I analyze the patterns of linguistic behaviors in this data using tokenization and semantic analysis techniques, revealing the divergent manifestations of identity …

In Medical Evidence And Practice, What Level Of Uncertainty Is Acceptable?, Hannah Levine Jan 2020

In Medical Evidence And Practice, What Level Of Uncertainty Is Acceptable?, Hannah Levine

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

This thesis addresses the level of uncertainty in medical evidence and practice and asks if this level is acceptable. Current medical standards consider randomized controlled trials (RCTs) as the best, and most certain, form of evidence. Similarly, medical practice largely relies on differential diagnosis and diagnostic testing to diagnose patients. I will argue that RCTs as well as differential diagnosis and diagnostic testing contribute to uncertainty in medical practice. In the former, uncertainty stems from lack of representation, elimination of confounding factors, among other issues; while in the latter, uncertainty originates from technological limitations, similarity or variability in presentation, and …

How Commission Rates Impact Real Estate Agent’S Performance: An Economic Regression Of Agent Performance In Jupiter, Tracy Vandenbraak Jan 2020

How Commission Rates Impact Real Estate Agent’S Performance: An Economic Regression Of Agent Performance In Jupiter, Tracy Vandenbraak

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Real estate agents charge their clients a percentage on every property sold and this percentage, or commission, can range from five to six percent. The reason for this difference is unclear. Using an ordinary least squares regression, I attempt to find a connection between real estate agent performance and the amount commission which he or she charges. The premium agent effect assumes that more efficient, or “successful”, agents charge more for their services because they are overall better than the agents who charge a lower commission. Efficiency in this paper is determined by the percent difference in the listing price …

Project ECHO Bibliography

Introduction While early psychosis intervention (EPI) has proliferated in recent years amid evidence of its effectiveness, programmes often struggle to deliver consistent, recovery-based care. NAVIGATE is a manualised model of EPI with demonstrated effectiveness consisting of four components: individualised medication management, individual resiliency training, supported employment and education and family education. We aim to implement NAVIGATE in geographically diverse EPI programmes in Ontario, Canada, evaluating implementation and its effect on fidelity to the EPI model, as well as individual-level outcomes (patient/family member-reported and interviewer-rated), system-level outcomes (captured in provincial administrative databases) and engagement of participants with lived experience.

Fifteenth International Photovideoanthology On Paradoxism, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2020

Fifteenth International Photovideoanthology On Paradoxism, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Paradoxism is an international movement in science and culture, founded by Florentin Smarandache in 1980s, based on excessive use of antitheses, oxymoron, contradictions, and paradoxes. During three decades (1980-2020) hundreds of authors from tenth of countries around the globe contributed papers to 15 international paradoxist anthologies.

In 1995, the author extended the paradoxism to a new branch of philosophy called neutrosophy, that gave birth to many scientific branches, such as: neutrosophic logic, neutrosophic set, neutrosophic probability and statistics, neutrosophic algebraic structures and so on with multiple applications in engineering, computer science, administrative work, medical research etc.

Neutrosophic set has been derived from a new branch of philosophy, namely Neutrosophy. Neutrosophic set is capable of dealing with uncertainty, indeterminacy and inconsistent information. Neutrosophic set approaches are suitable to modeling problems with uncertainty, indeterminacy and inconsistent information in which human knowledge is necessary, and human evaluation is needed. Neutrosophic set theory firstly proposed in 1998 by Florentin Smarandache, who also developed the concept of single valued neutrosophic set, oriented towards real world scientific and engineering applications. Since then, the single valued neutrosophic set theory has been extensively studied in books and monographs introducing neutrosophic sets and its applications, …

In the rising trends of information technology, the concepts of uncertainty have started gaining greater importance with time in solving operational research problems in supply chain model, project management, transportation problem, or inventory control problems. Moreover, day-by-day competition is becoming tougher in imprecise environments. For instance, customer demand is often being affected by several varying factors like production price, income level, and the like. In these cases, the demand either remains unfulfilled or is difficult to obtain with certainty in the real-world market. Fuzzy sets are not always able to directly depict such uncertainties because they exhibit numeric only membership …

However, a truly multipurpose laser therapy method is very rarely available. Here we introduce a multipurpose laser therapy device in Ukraine, which is capable to take care a multitude of diseases. It is called “Helios”, by one of us (VK). We also give a case where a patient who suffered from Covid-19 has been treated successfully until he is recovered to healthy condition. In the last section we also discuss potential future application of Helios for other fields; i.e. neurology disorders.
