Ultra-Brief Online Mindfulness-Based Intervention Effects On Mental Health During The Coronavirus Disease Outbreak In Malaysia: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Kai-Shuen Pheh, Hui-Chien Tan, Chee-Seng Tan
Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
The federal government of Malaysia recently implemented a nationwide Movement Control Order (MCO) to control the COVID-19 outbreak. However, the MCO has had a negative impact on people’s mental well-being. Interventions that can improve people’s mental health when their movement is restricted are therefore urgently needed. The present study investigated the impact of an ultra-brief online mindfulness-based intervention on mental health using a two-arm randomized controlled trial design. A total of 161 participants self-reported their distress, anxiety, psychological insecurity, and well-being at baseline and post-treatment, while 61 of them answered the same set of measures and the fear of COVID-19 …

Health Literacy Program To Reduce The Consumption Of Sugary Drinks By Middle School Students In Jakarta, Ni Putu Pristi Wisuantari, Laras Sekarasih
Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
There is a visible upward trend in the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages across the world, and Indonesia is no exception. This study examined the effectiveness of school-based programs to increase the knowledge of junior high school students with regard to sugar-sweetened beverages in an attempt to decrease their consumption. A one week intervention using a quasi-experimental design was conducted through the adoption of the Kids SIPsmartER (Lane, et al., 2017) program. The students who received the intervention showed significantly higher nutritional knowledge of drinks with high sugar content upon completion of the program. The intervention was also successful in inducing …

In the American West, high-profile big game species including mule deer, antelope, elk, moose, bison and bighorn sheep use large landscapes to migrate between winter and summer habitats to obtain the resources they need to survive. The big game species are a vital part of the West’s ecology, economy, and culture and are valued by local, national, and international stakeholders. Thanks to large parcels of private and public land and a low human population, many parts of the American West still provide some of the best big game habitats in the world. But these vast, intact landscapes are under threat …

Benefits From Laguna Lake: Perspective Of Small Fisher Households, Rosalina Palanca-Tan
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
Fishing is considered to be the most important among the many uses of Laguna Lake, the largest lake in the Philippines and second largest in Southeast Asia. Using primary data gathered through focus group discussions, key informant interviews, and a household survey together with secondary data on revenue and cost estimates for aquaculture and catch fisheries, this paper discusses the lake’s role in the economic life of two fishing communities located along the shoreline. The study, which uses a microscopic lens to look at issues from the perspective of small fisher households instead of from that of policymakers and non-government …

A Review Of The Effects Of Dietary Restriction, Dehydration, And Caffeine Withdrawal On Cognition: Implications For A Disabled Submarine Scenario, Sarah Chabal
Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments
In the event that submariners become trapped aboard a disabled submarine (DISSUB), they must perform a multitude of cognitively demanding tasks in order to maximize their likelihood of survival. During this time, submariners will also be forced to endure poor living conditions, including drastic changes to their nutrition. These nutritional changes have the potential to impair submariners’ cognitive functioning and affect operational performance, which could jeopardize survival; however, the effects of DISSUB nutrition on cognitive performance are not well understood. This review first describes the unique nutritional conditions that submariners will experience in a DISSUB scenario, including the change to …

Automatic Chain Cleaner, Daniel Cherenson, Rudy Lawler, Darius Rucker
Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study
The Automatic Chain Cleaner (ACC) is a battery-powered tool that clamps onto a bicycle frame and encloses the chain while cleaning it with brushes and degreaser and/or water. The batteries power a motor that drives the chain in the reverse direction from normal bicycle use. Clamps stabilize the tool and provide a consistent and stable cleaning job. This project aims to replace the manual versions of thistool which suffer from lack of stability and a poor user experience. Ease of use and reliability are important requirements for this project. The ACC will take 4 AA batteries and will run smoothly …

This study aims to analyze students' misconceptions about shifts in chemical equilibrium by using a two-tier multiple choices diagnostic test based on multiple representations. The design of this study is descriptive. The research subjects were second-semester students of Chemistry Department A, B, and I classes in Malang State University in 2018/2019 Academic Year totaling 60 students. The reliability of the diagnostic test is 0.86. The results showed that students' misconceptions of the factors affecting chemical equilibrium shifts identified 9 misconceptions with an average percentage of misconceptions below 30%. Misconceptions also often occur in students when associated with submicroscopic representation.

Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research
The Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit tree contains pharmacologically active compounds and can easily be found in abundant quantities. The utilization of this tree as a source of nutraceuticals would increase its value. The extraction yields show the number of compounds that have been extracted by solvent. However, Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit seeds also contain mimosine, which can cause hair loss. The present study investigated the process of removing mimosine from the seeds. Three treatments were applied to these seeds: treatment without soaking, soaking with distilled water for 24 hours, and splitting the seeds in half and then soaking …

Herniation of bulla across mediastinum is rare, while transmediastinal giant bulla herniation accompanied with hydropneumothorax is even rarer. We report a case of an 18 years old male with dyspnea came to emergency department with trans-mediastinal giant bulla herniation, which appears as semilunar sign on chest x-ray, and righthydropneumothoraks. It appeared that the giant bulla also infected by the presence of air fluid level within. Semilunar sign was seen on the contralateral left mediastinum as the hallmark finding for trans-mediastinal herniation of bulla. Chest CT further confirms the diagnosis. Subsequently chest tube insertion and symptomatic relives were given, however the …

The world is on fire, and despite a general consensus among scientists that climate change is an imminent threat, recent decades have been devoid of legislatures capable of enacting meaningful legislation. The flames rage on as our President, an outspoken denier of climate change, adds fuel to the fire by stripping whatever attempts had been previously made to mitigate the effects of climate change. Forced to live in what seems a forsaken world, nineteen youths, a nonprofit organization, and a scientist on behalf of all future generations brought suit against the United States government, seeking more robust environmental protections. Anti-displacement movements are one of the burning issues in the current global scenario. Global south has been experiencing such widespread resistance since the inception of its anti-colonial struggle. Gender in this context has played a crucial part to make it a large-scale mass movement, as the women bear the brunt of displacement. It is chiefly because they have economic independence as they have customary rights over the communal property resources. Displacement has caused mental trauma for the adivasi women who end up being prostitutes to eke out livelihoods. In this background the present article seeks to explore the impact of …
