Joint Employment In The United States, Jeffrey M. Hirsch Jan 2020

Joint Employment In The United States, Jeffrey M. Hirsch

Faculty Publications

The joint-employer doctrine in the United States is as fissured as the economy itself. As this paper’s brief survey of the different joint-employer standards used in the U.S. shows, the diverse set of work laws and governing authorities involved in workplace disputes have led to an unpredictable and confusing set of joint-employer standards. Although most of these standards share similarities, there are numerous differences based on the statute involved, whether the dispute is brought under federal or state law, which federal court is hearing the case, and which political party controls a relevant agency. Moreover, thanks in large part to …

A Symbolic Participation Of The Local Community In The Implementation Of A Proper-Based Corporate Social Responsibility (Csr) Program, Yosef Hillarius Timu Pera, Yusup Ridwansyah

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

CSR practices continue to grow as a promising alternative development resource, yet still predominantly charitable in nature, preventing them from optimal community empowerment. Therefore, studies and policies at the national and global levels remain in search of the best format to optimize CSR programs’ role in community empowerment. A number of literature show less than optimal active participation and capacity-building of the community if a program is initiated by a directive, top-down approach, providing only a minimal participatory space based on the community’s potentials. Using qualitative method and in-depth interview techniques, this paper finds that the local community participation in …

The Paradox Of Informal Economy In Urban Area Indonesia: A Case Study Street Vendors In Jalan Salemba Raya, Jakarta, And Jalan Raya Sawangan, Depok, Rusydan Fathy, Dicky Rachmawan

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

Informal economic has a big proportion which absorbs 58% of the workforce in Indonesia. In urban areas, it easily can be seen as street vendors (SV). Several previous studies on informal economic about street vendors see them from negative perspective (as the source of urban irregularity) and positive perspective (for contribution to national economic development). By using the literature review, observation, and depth interview with the SV at Jalan Salemba Raya (Jakarta City) and Jalan Raya Sawangan (Depok City), this article particularly shows with the second perspective of previous studies that SV contributes to economic activity in urban. The conversion …

Just Showing Up Can Make A Difference: A History Of The Association For Communication Administration, Christopher Lynch

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

The Association for Communication Administration (ACA), founded in Chicago in 1972, claimed a membership of one hundred and two departments. It was an independent organization but shared resources with what is now the National Communication Association. Initial membership included theatre and broadcast programs under the umbrella of communication. These programs would create their own independent associations. ACA’s mission was to promote the role of communication administrators, chairpersons to university presidents, in academia. It has weathered the ebbs and flows of any organization as it moves towards its fiftieth anniversary. A newsletter to the membership led to the creation of JACA …

Mentoring Faculty And Bolstering Students’ Emotional And Cognitive Interest: The Impact Of Perceived Homophily In The College Classroom, Robert J. Sidelinger, Leeanne M. Bell Mcmanus

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

For this study, expectancy violations theory was used to explore the associations among instructors’ inappropriate conversations, perceived homophily (similarity), and college students’ emotional and cognitive interest. Results found that students’ perceptions of instructor perceived homophily moderated the relationships between students’ reports of instructors’ enactment of inappropriate conversations and students’ emotional and cognitive interest. These results offer further understanding of the ways in which inappropriate conversations and perceived homophily affect perceptual outcomes in the college classroom, which can inform college faculty, administrators, and mentors. Limitations and future research directions are discussed.

Listening Leadership: An Academic Perspective, Annie Rappeport, Andrew Wolvin Jan 2020

Listening Leadership: An Academic Perspective, Annie Rappeport, Andrew Wolvin

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

Much of the literature on leadership continues to focus on the leader who has the ability to shape a vision and articulate that vision, a vision that resonates with the mission, values, personnel and technology that make up the organization. To shape and articulate a resonant vision, the effective leader must be willing and able to listen. Only through listening to the stakeholders can a leader know how that vision should best be framed and implemented. One significant way that leadership listening can be implemented is through listening sessions. This study provides a detailed example of the effective use of …

Speech Communication At Iowa State University: A Departmental History And Aftermath, Luke Lefebvre

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

In 1903 at Iowa State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, a Public Speaking department emerged. This transition occurred over a decade prior to public speaking teachers seceding from English. Members of the department played foundational roles in establishing the national association and moving the discipline toward research-driven initiatives in order to secure legitimacy across academic landscapes. Surviving two World Wars, the Great Depression and title merger with English, the department again emerged as an independent academic unit prior to the 1970s. The department included faculty from areas of speech, drama, telecommunicative arts, and speech disorders, which progressed until its …

© 2013 IEEE. Background subtraction techniques model the background of the scene using the stationarity property and classify the scene into two classes namely foreground and background. In doing so, most moving objects become foreground indiscriminately, except in dynamic scenes (such as those with some waving tree leaves, water ripples, or a water fountain), which are typically 'learned' as part of the background using a large training set of video data. We introduce a novel concept of background as the objects other than the foreground, which may include moving objects in the scene that cannot be learned from a training …

© 2013 IEEE. This paper addresses traffic engineering (TE) issues in software-defined vehicular networking (SDVN). A brief analysis of the features of SDVN, which improves the efficiency of TE in SDVN, is presented. The feasibility of using multi-path routing with TE is substantiated. A procedure and an example of the formation of multiple routes based on a modified wave routing algorithm are given. Considering the features of the SDVN technology, a modified TE method is proposed, which reduces both the time complexity of forming multiple paths and the path reconfiguration time. The dynamic path reconfiguration algorithm is presented.

Although Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) is the official language of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Emiratis mainly use Khaleeji (Gulf Arabic) dialects at home. English is the lingua franca and common medium of instruction with approximately 100 other languages also being spoken in the nation. While top-down language policies overtly favor English and MSA, which appear on signage, in educational contexts, and online as two ‘pure’ languages placed side-by-side, language ‘on the ground’ is considerably more complex than …

Copyright © 2020 Shahzad Ashraf et al. Due to unavoidable environmental factors, wireless sensor networks are facing numerous tribulations regarding network coverage. These arose due to the uncouth deployment of the sensor nodes in the wireless coverage area that ultimately degrades the performance and confines the coverage range. In order to enhance the network coverage range, an instance (node) redeployment-based Bodacious-instance Coverage Mechanism (BiCM) is proposed. The proposed mechanism creates new instance positions in the coverage area. It operates in two stages; in the first stage, it locates the intended instance position through the Dissimilitude Enhancement Scheme (DES) and moves …
