Nanoscale Material Interaction With Multicellular 3d Cancer Culture, Emilie Darrigues
Nanoscale Material Interaction With Multicellular 3d Cancer Culture, Emilie Darrigues
Theses and Dissertations
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is the most common form of pancreatic cancer, it is difficult to diagnose, often recurs, has high resistance to chemotherapies, and can be marked by advanced metastatic stages. There is an urgent need to fill the knowledge on nanoparticle penetration, diffusion, and cellular interaction in the context of adaptive PDAC tumor microenvironment to allow the development of new imaging and therapeutic supports. Traditionally, cancer-treating nanoparticles have been engineered and tested on 2D cell cultures, but several studies indicate that this in vitro model does not mimic tumor features closely enough. In contrast, 3D culture models offer …

In this paper we report the first close, high-resolution observations of downward-directed terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) detected by the large-area Telescope Array cosmic ray observatory, obtained in conjunction with broadband VHF interferometer and fast electric field change measurements of the parent discharge. The results show that the TGFs occur during strong initial breakdown pulses (IBPs) in the first few milliseconds of negative cloud-to-ground and low-altitude intracloud flashes and that the IBPs are produced by a newly identified streamer-based discharge process called fast negative breakdown. The observations indicate the relativistic runaway electron avalanches (RREAs) responsible for producing the TGFs are initiated …
Determinants Of Financial Success Of Large Law Firms, James Xu
Determinants Of Financial Success Of Large Law Firms, James Xu
Dissertations
Prior research has established that leadership characteristics, job equity perception, and client satisfaction are all associated with a firm’s financial performance. This study tested hypotheses about these variables based upon Upper Echelons Theory, Adams Equity Theory, and Stakeholder Theory, in the context of 110 large U.S. law firms. The analysis revealed that (1) the racial diversity of the firm’s management committee is positively associated with the firm’s financial performance; (2) the average employee salary has a positive and U-shaped relationship with the firm’s financial performance; (3) the average employee salary has a positive relationship with the firm’s client satisfaction; (4) …

“Help Is The Sunny Side Of Control”: The Medical Model Of Gambling And Social Context Evidence In Canadian Personal Bankruptcy Law, Anna J. Lund
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
At the start of the twentieth century, people who gambled excessively were viewed as morally deviant. Now, they are viewed as suffering from a medical disorder. Legal actors incorporate this medical approach to gamblers into how they apply the law. This shift from a moral to a medical model reorients actors from punishing gamblers to helping them, and thus can be characterized as a positive, humane development. Yet the medical model has drawbacks too. The medical model can be used to justify paternalistic and potentially harmful interventions in the lives of individuals, and it obscures the social context in which …

Human–Wildlife Interactions
Collisions between birds and aircraft (bird strikes) are a serious threat to air safety and represent a substantial economic cost to the global aviation industry. In recent years, the frequency of wood pigeons (Columba palumbus) flying over active runways has increased at airports in Ireland. Here, we examine the effectiveness of imitation hawk-kites as a means of excluding wood pigeons from sensitive airfield locations. Over 2 years, during August and September, we conducted control (no kites deployed) and treatment trials (kites deployed) at Casement Aerodrome, an active airfield of approximately 320 ha in County Dublin, Ireland and on …

The Basques Of New Orleans, Koldo San Sebastian
The Basques Of New Orleans, Koldo San Sebastian
BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal
Basques have found their way to many corners of the world, and one of those is the distinctive city of New Orleans in the United States. The relationship of Basques with Louisiana antedates the independence of the United States, and, of course, incorporation of that territory into the American Union. The Basque presence was most evident throughout the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth, when a significant community of Basque mariners resided in New Orleans. This article provides a historical overview of the Basque connection to Louisiana, from the expulsion of the Acadians that sent Basques south, …
