The Subject-Centered Integrative Learning Model: A New Model For Teaching Occupational Therapy’S Distinct Value, Barb Hooper, Matthew Molineux, Wendy Wood

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

The concept of occupation-centered education has been used to describe what programs do when they infuse occupation throughout an occupational therapy curriculum. In describing occupation-centered education, educators often describe the strategies they use to help students learn occupation, including courses about occupation, direct experience with occupation, cases and questions that connect biomedical sciences and health conditions to occupation, assignments that require students to infuse occupation into therapy, curriculum threads related to occupation, and many others. While each of these strategies is important, no conceptual model exists that defines occupation-centered education, elaborates its concepts and principles, and guides the development of …

Pre-Entry Selection Assessment Results And Final Degree Outcomes Of Occupational Therapy Students: Are There Relationships?, Sarah Louise Mcginley

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Occupational therapy (OT) admissions tutors are tasked with ensuring the recruitment of high-quality candidates who can demonstrate both academic and professional skills throughout their education and subsequently into practice. While standardized admissions criteria do not exist, it is widely accepted that both cognitive and non-cognitive characteristics should be assessed to establish academic and professional qualities of applicants. Pre-admission qualifications are generally classed as a reliable assessment of academic (cognitive) ability, with literature supporting positive but variable relationships between academic qualifications and degree classifications. Evidence to support trusted assessments of pre-admission professional (non-cognitive) skills is lacking, with ambiguity surrounding relationships between …

Degenerative Decadence And Regenerative Militarism In The Invasion Narratives Of Robert W. Chambers And Erskine Childers, Lucas C. Townsend Jan 2020

Degenerative Decadence And Regenerative Militarism In The Invasion Narratives Of Robert W. Chambers And Erskine Childers, Lucas C. Townsend

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

This thesis explores fin de siècle theories of decadence, degeneration, criminology, and evolutionary biology, and their contemporary application to invasion literature written between 1871 and 1915. While there is significant criticism on early invasion narratives, there is little extant on Robert W. Chambers’s The King in Yellow (1895) and Erskine Childers’s The Riddle of the Sands (1903), especially in discussing the importance of their militaristic “calls to action” to convert weak, aesthetically-inclined men into hard-working patriotic soldiers and public servants. Through this conversion, the characters of Chambers and Childers serve as important role models that exemplify Max Nordau’s ideal “all-American …

Development Of A Biosensor For Objectively Quantifying Odorants, Sharmily Rahman Jan 2020

Development Of A Biosensor For Objectively Quantifying Odorants, Sharmily Rahman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Nuisance odor levels produced by solid waste management operations are subject to regulatory standards due to their impacts on the quality of life of the residents living nearby the facility. Failure to meet regulatory standards may result in fines, litigation, inability to acquire permits, mitigation, and re-siting operations. Since measurement of environmental nuisance odors is currently limited to subjective techniques, monitoring odor levels to meet such standards is often problematic. This is becoming more acute as increasing residential populations begin to encroach on properties adjacent to landfills. In order to ensure that nuisance odor issues are minimized, it is necessary …

Development Of An Acellular Extracellular Matrix As A Three-Dimensional Scaffold For Esophageal Tumor Engineering, Hersh Chaitin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Human esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (hESCC) is a very aggressive form of cancer due to its ability to easily metastasize into proximal lymph nodes and adjacent organs. The role of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and its stromal cells in metastasis remains unclear. To better understand the effect of the ECM and fibroblast cells on esophagus cancer cell migration and invasion, we propose a biomimetic human esophagus model cultured with hESCC and human primary fibroblast cells (fibroblast). To mimic the extracellular matrix of human esophagus we use decellularized porcine esophagus matrix (DEM) to culture with hESCC and fibroblasts in static conditions. …

Empirical Analysis Of The Dissipated Acoustic Energy In Wave Breaking, Kristina Francke Jan 2020

Empirical Analysis Of The Dissipated Acoustic Energy In Wave Breaking, Kristina Francke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

In this research an attempt is made at explaining the physical processes behind energy dissipation during wave breaking, through spectral analysis of the resulting sound. The size of an air bubble can be directly linked to the frequency of the sound that is heard using the simple harmonic solution to the Rayleigh–Plesset equation. It indicates the inverse relationship between frequency and bubble size. And this relationship has been used to identify wave breaking in general [MANASSEH 2006]. Now this research goes a step farther and looks at how the frequency spectrum of the sound changes with time, in an effort …

Evaluating Evaluation: A Statistical Investigation Of Archaeological Site Sampling, Danielle Ashley Simon Jan 2020

Evaluating Evaluation: A Statistical Investigation Of Archaeological Site Sampling, Danielle Ashley Simon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

The evaluation of archaeological sites is an essential, routine, and commonplace part of archaeological practice. Evaluation is usually a preliminary step carried out prior to a decision about preservation, destruction, or more intensive investigation. In most cases, archaeologists sample sites when conducting evaluations, often to reduce the cost of the research, but also to minimize the adverse effects to sites that may be significant. The literature on sampling in archaeology, with a few noteworthy exceptions, does not address critical issues concerning how much to sample to achieve a valid and reliable evaluation of a site, or, alternatively, how much material …

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Academia is often critiqued as an “ivory tower” where research, thinking, and teaching are isolated from the complexity and everyday experience of so many people. As instructors of political and other psychology courses, we strive to break down these barriers and engage with the dynamic and nuanced nature of phenomena as situated in lived social and political contexts. In this report, we unpack and detail how we strive to achieve this goal by expanding on Plous’ articulation of action teaching (2012). We first define our pedagogical focus on active engagement, critical thinking, and staying on the move between multiple perspectives. …

1T-MoS2 and single-atom modified analogues represent a highly promising class of low-cost catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the role of single atoms, either as active species or promoters, remains vague despite its essentiality toward more efficient HER. In this work, we report the unambiguous identification of Ni single atom as key active sites in the basal plane of 1T-MoS2 (Ni@1T-MoS2) that result in efficient HER performance. The intermediate structure of this Ni active site under catalytic conditions was captured by in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy, where a reversible metallic Ni species (Ni0) …

Dynamic Loading Experimentation And Surface Imaging Of Pressure Vessel Loadcell Fractures, Austin T. Sumner Jan 2020

Dynamic Loading Experimentation And Surface Imaging Of Pressure Vessel Loadcell Fractures, Austin T. Sumner

Honors College Theses

Pressure vessels are very common pieces of equipment in industry and they are used for a variety of applications. It is standard in industry to rest pressure vessels on load cells. For some special cases, the pressure vessels are rested on load cells instead of solid foundation. Pressure vessels and their loadcells are generally designed for static environmental conditions and loading and tend to experience adverse effects when exposed to dynamic environments, such as hurricanes and earthquakes. These adverse-loading conditions cause vibrations and asymmetrical loading on the load cells, which can concurrently cause unexpected failure. This research investigates the effects …

Is Transformative Use Eating The World?, Clark D. Asay, Arielle Sloan, Dean Sobczak Jan 2020

Is Transformative Use Eating The World?, Clark D. Asay, Arielle Sloan, Dean Sobczak

Faculty Scholarship

Fair use is copyright law’s most important defense to claims of copyright infringement. This defense allows courts to relax copyright law’s application when courts believe doing so will promote creativity more than harm it. As the U.S. Supreme Court has said, without the fair use defense, copyright law would often “stifle the very creativity [it] is designed to foster.” In today’s world, whether use of a copyrighted work is “transformative” has become a central question within the fair use test. The Supreme Court first endorsed the transformative use term in its 1994 Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music, Inc. decision. Since then, …

Transformation Cost Engineering, Matthew Jennejohn Jan 2020

Transformation Cost Engineering, Matthew Jennejohn

Faculty Scholarship

Transactions in the market for corporate control are not fully standardized but rather exhibit a material amount of variation. This paper explores a possible structural explanation: That the complexity of merger and acquisition (M&A) agreements makes them susceptible to multiple sources of path dependency, which introduce tensions that unsettle incentives toward uniform standardization. Using natural language processing techniques and standard regression analysis, the article presents preliminary evidence indicating that the level of standardization of various M&A agreement provisions correlates differently with multiple sources of path dependency, lending support to the hypothesis that endogenous structural factors limit the standardization of M&A …
