Comparison Of Different Eggshell Thickness Measurement Methods, Abdulkadi̇r Arslan, Umut Sami̇ Yamak
Comparison Of Different Eggshell Thickness Measurement Methods, Abdulkadi̇r Arslan, Umut Sami̇ Yamak
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study was conducted to examine how various methods affect the results of eggshell thickness measurements. Direct and indirect measurements were performed on 700 table eggs which were daily collected from the same flock. The shell thickness of the eggs was calculated according to a logarithm which uses egg weight. Eggs with a specific gravity of higher than 0.80 g/cm³ were classified as thick-shelled, whereas the others were categorized as thin-shelled. After determining the shell thickness of the eggs by an ultrasound gauge, all of the eggs were broken, the shells were separated, and the shell thickness of each egg …

Light And Scanning Electron Microscopic Examination Of The Saanen Goat Heart, Sedef Selvi̇ler Si̇zer, Yonca Beti̇l Kabak, Murat Kabak
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
It is important to know the morphological structure of the heart, which is a vital organ of the body, in detail. For this reason, we aimed to examine the morphological structure of the Saanen goat heart using light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A total of thirteen Saanen goat hearts were used in the study. To demonstrate the histological structure of the heart, samples taken from 9 hearts were fixed in 10% formaldehyde solution and blocked in paraffin after routine histological procedures. Histological staining was performed on the sections taken from the blocks. Four hearts were fixed in a 2.5% …

The Effects Of Season And Chick Sex On Certain Performance Parameters In Commercialturkey Farms In The Aegean Region, Gündüz İlsever, Pembe Di̇lara Keçi̇ci̇, Bülent Eki̇z
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of season and sex on the production efficiency of commercial turkey farms in the Aegean Region. The data of 1161 production periods (570 male and 591 female) on 139 turkey farms between 2008 and 2017 were analysed. Daily feed consumption, feed conservation ratio (FCR), average daily gain (ADG), performance index, and carcass weight (P < 0.001) were higher in males than females. While males and females had a similar mortality rate in the first week (P > 0.05), the mortality rate in the later stages was higher in males (P < 0.001). The mortality rate in the initial period was highest in production periods that began in winter and lowest in those that began in summer (P < 0.001). The total mortality rate was higher in the autumn group than in the spring and summer groups (P < 0.001). Rearing season × sex interaction had a significant influence on the performance characteristics investigated in the study, except for mortality rates and survival. In males, FCR was lower in the autumn and winter groups than that of the spring and summer groups (P < 0.05). The highest ADG values were observed in the summer group for males and in the winter group for females. The best performance index was in the summer group in males, and the lowest performance index was observed in the autumn group for both males and females. In conclusion, environmental arrangements are needed in order to reduce the mortality rate and improve performance in production periods that began in autumn and winter.

Anticipating Venezuela’S Debt Crisis: Hidden Holdouts And The Problem Of Pricing Collective Action Clauses, Robert E. Scott, Stephen J. Choi, Mitu Gulati

A creditor who asks for stronger enforcement rights upon its debtor’s default will rationally accept a lower interest rate reflecting the greater expected recovery the exercise of those rights provides. Over a dozen studies, however, have failed to document this basic relationship in the context of the collective action clause, a key provision in sovereign bonds. We conjecture that this failure is because enforcing the rights in question requires collective decision-making among anonymous creditors with different interests, impeding market predictions regarding future price effects. The pricing of rights that require collective enforcement thus turns on whether the market observes an …
Reconciling Environmental Justice With Climate Change Mitigation: A Case Study Of Nc Swine Cafos, D. Lee Miller, Ryke Longest
Reconciling Environmental Justice With Climate Change Mitigation: A Case Study Of Nc Swine Cafos, D. Lee Miller, Ryke Longest
Faculty Scholarship
For thirty years, the swine industry has externalized severe environmental and health harms onto poor communities of color in Eastern North Carolina. This “Big Pig” problem is caused by the confinement, consolidation, and concentration of industrial hog operations within the low, flat, and economically marginalized Coastal Plain. Big Pig’s rise was not inevitable. As recently as 1982, more than 11,000 small swine farms freckled nearly all of North Carolina’s 100 counties. Then came the “boom” of consolidation and industrialization that transformed hog production into a highly consolidated and vertically integrated industry.

When scholars contemplate the legal tools available to policymakers for encouraging innovation, they primarily think about patents. If they are keeping up with the most recent literature, they may also consider grants, prizes, and taxes as means to increase the supply of innovation. But the innovation policy toolkit is substantially deeper than that. To demonstrate its depth, this Article explores the evolution of designs that help people with disabilities access the world around them. From artificial limbs to the modern wheelchair and the reshaping of the built environment, a variety of legal doctrines have influenced, for better and for worse, …
Building A Law-And-Political-Economy Framework: Beyond The Twentieth-Century Synthesis, Jedediah Britton-Purdy
Building A Law-And-Political-Economy Framework: Beyond The Twentieth-Century Synthesis, Jedediah Britton-Purdy

We live in a time of interrelated crises. Economic inequality and precarity, and crises of democracy, climate change, and more raise significant challenges for legal scholarship and thought. “Neoliberal” premises undergird many fields of law and have helped authorize policies and practices that reaffirm the inequities of the current era. In particular, market efficiency, neutrality, and formal equality have rendered key kinds of power invisible, and generated a skepticism of democratic politics. The result of these presumptions is what we call the “Twentieth-Century Synthesis”: a pervasive view of law that encases “the market” from claims of justice and conceals it …

In December 2017, Congress passed major tax reform. The reform included an important new provision that granted independent contractors and other pass-through taxpayers—but not employees or corporations—a potential tax deduction equal to 20% of their qualified business income. Critics have argued that this new deduction (codified at 26 U.S.C. § 199A) could lead to a widespread shift toward independent contractor jobs as workers seek to reduce taxes paid. This shift could cause workers to lose important employee protections and leave them more economically vulnerable.
This Article examines whether this new tax provision will create a large-scale workplace shift and, if …
Digging Into Algorithms: Legal Ethics And Legal Access, Carla L. Reyes, Jeff Ward
Digging Into Algorithms: Legal Ethics And Legal Access, Carla L. Reyes, Jeff Ward
Faculty Scholarship
The current discussions around algorithms, legal ethics, and expanding legal access through technological tools gravitate around two themes: (1) protection of the integrity of the legal profession and (2) a desire to ensure greater access to legal services. The hype cycle often pits the desire to protect the integrity of the legal profession against the ability to use algorithms to provide greater access to legal services, as though they are mutually exclusive. In reality, the arguments around protecting the profession from the threats posed by algorithms represent an over-fit in relation to what algorithms can actually achieve, while the visions …

Complete Contracts In Finance, Elisabeth De Fontenay

Notwithstanding its significant influence in corporate finance, the theory of incomplete contracts is arguably misunderstood by courts enforcing contracts governing corporate transactions. In resolving such disputes, judges implicitly assume that complete contracts are both achievable and desirable when the parties are financially sophisticated, and they systematically assign blame to one of the parties for leaving the contract incomplete. This, in turn, prompts parties to write ever longer and more complex agreements. Such agreements do not necessarily produce more efficient outcomes, however. In fact, they may yield unexpected outcomes or interpretations, which can be enforced opportunistically by one of the parties …

This article employs analytical and empirical tools to dissect the complex relationship between secrecy, accountability, and innovation incentives in clinical decision software enabled by machine learning (ML-CD). Although secrecy can provide incentives for innovation, it can also diminish the ability of third parties to adjudicate risk and benefit responsibly. Our first aim is descriptive. We address how the interrelated regimes of intellectual property law, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulation, and tort liability are currently shaping information flow and innovation incentives. We find that developers regard secrecy over training data and details of the trained model as central to competitive …

The Role Of Latency And Task Complexity In Predicting Visual Search Behavior, Leilani Battle, R. Jordan Crouser, Audace Nakeshimana, Ananda Montoly, Remco Chang, Michael Stonebraker
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
Latency in a visualization system is widely believed to affect user behavior in measurable ways, such as requiring the user to wait for the visualization system to respond, leading to interruption of the analytic flow. While this effect is frequently observed and widely accepted, precisely how latency affects different analysis scenarios is less well understood. In this paper, we examine the role of latency in the context of visual search, an essential task in data foraging and exploration using visualization. We conduct a series of studies on Amazon Mechanical Turk and find that under certain conditions, latency is a statistically …

In order to build resilient systems that can be operational for a long time, it is important that analysts are able to model the evolution of the requirements of that system. The Evolving Intentions framework models how stakeholders’ goals change over time. In this work, our aim is to validate applicability and effectiveness of this technique on a substantial case. In the absence of ground truth about future evolutions, we used historical data and rational reconstruction to understand how a project evolved in the past. Seeking a well-documented project with varying stakeholder intentions over a substantial period of time, we …

Journal of Dental Sciences
Abstract Background/purpose Relieving immuno-inflammatory responses is the prerequisite step for treating periodontitis. The angiogenic small molecule, dimethyloxalylglycine (DMOG), and osteoinductive inorganic nanomaterial, nanosilicate (nSi) have a powerful effect on bone regeneration, whereas the roles in osteoimmunomodulation have not been totally uncovered. Our study aimed to explore the immunomodulatory effect of DMOG/nSi-loaded fibrous membranes on periodontal bone remodeling. Materials and methods The fibrous membranes were prepared by incorporating DMOG and nSi into poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) with electrospinning. The morphology features, surface chemical property and biocompatibility of DMOG/nSi-PLGA fibrous membranes were characterized. Thereafter, the fibrous membranes were implanted into rat periodontal …
A School-Based Group Intervention For Immigrant Adolescents : Addressing Acculturative Stress And Facilitating Ethnic Identity Development, School Connectedness, And Related Psychosocial Outcomes, Mark W. Kiang
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Immigrant adolescents account for an ever-increasing portion of middle school and high school populations. In addition to experiencing stress related to typical adolescent development, immigrant adolescents are exposed to immigration-related and acculturative stress, which can lead to compromised mental health (Takeuchi, Alegria, Jackson, & Williams, 2007). Unfortunately, immigrants as a group tend to underutilize mental health services due to a number of cultural and economic factors (Saechao et al., 2012). Schools offer an ideal setting for services that address immigrant student stress (Gonzalez, Eades, & Supple, 2014). Ethnic identity and school connectedness are two constructs that have been linked to …

The open access (OA) publication movement aims to present research literature to the public at no cost and with no restrictions. While the democratization of access to scholarly literature is a primary focus of the movement, it remains unclear whether OA has uniformly democratized the corpus of freely available research, or whether authors who choose to publish in OA venues represent a particular subset of scholars—those with access to resources enabling them to afford article processing charges (APCs). We investigated the number of OA articles with article processing charges (APC OA) authored by 182,320 scholars with known demographic and institutional …

With climate change a present reality, governments are confronting the need to adapt their regulatory planning processes to withstand new and uncertain climate risks. This Article provides three new resources to support this essential work. First, it develops a new standard for assessing the quality of climate adaptation decisionmaking, focusing on defining the problem, quantifying adaptation benefits, and evaluating equitable distribution of risk. Second, it reviews California’s climate adaptation policy development efforts between 1988 and 2018—from the state’s early efforts to study the problem, to later attempts at statewide strategic planning, until more recent work to integrate adaptation into existing …

In this study, the mechanism of the biochemical adaptation of wild soybean to the experimentally modeled effects of cadmium sulfate and copper sulfate in approximately double permissible concentration was investigated. The extracted concentrations of cadmium and copper in the experimental soil were determined by inversion voltammetry - 1.46 and 48.25 mg/kg, respectively. Growing soybeans in soil with the addition of copper and cadmium sulfates led to an increase in the concentration of malonic dialdehyde in soybean seeds relative to control by 62% and 38%, respectively, which confirmed the strengthening of oxidative processes. There was also an increase in the specific …

Cognitive Dissonance In Higher Education: Inflating Grades And Not Feeling Guilty, Ahmad Hassan, Fatma Mohamed, Jonathan Nelson
Cognitive Dissonance In Higher Education: Inflating Grades And Not Feeling Guilty, Ahmad Hassan, Fatma Mohamed, Jonathan Nelson
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
Although there has been growing interest in recent years in investigating the phenomena of grade inflation in higher education, little has focused on the actual psychological processes through which professors may engage in inflating grades without feeling guilty or perceiving this behavior as problematic. Social psychology has focused on the apparent inconsistency between stated attitudes and actual behavior; specifically, cognitive dissonance theory provides insights into why people may behave immorally. By outlining the role of cognitive dissonance in the grade inflation process we provide greater understanding as to how professors cope with the negative psychological arousal associated with grade inflation.
