Applying Power Dividers To Decoupling Of Mimo Antennas With Wideband, Dual-Band Or Adjacent-Band Operations, Min Li, Lijun Jiang, Kwan Lawrence Yeung
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents a novel decoupling method of applying power dividers to isolation enhancement of multiple-input multiple-output antennas with wideband, dual-band, or adjacent-band operations. The decoupling structure consists of the power dividers, transmission lines, and reactive components. Three benchmarks are used to elaborate on the design procedure and demonstrate the advantages of the proposed method. Results show that this method offers good impedance matching and high port isolation at the designated frequencies.

Effects Of Conformal Cooling Channels On Additively Manufactured Injection Molding Tooling, Tyler Blaine Whatcott
Effects Of Conformal Cooling Channels On Additively Manufactured Injection Molding Tooling, Tyler Blaine Whatcott
Theses and Dissertations
This study focuses on the cycle-averaged mold temperature of additively manufactured injection molding tooling and how it is affected by conformal cooling channels. This was done by producing a benchmark mold out of Digital ABS produced by Stratasys, an acrylic based photopolymer, which was then used to produce injection molded parts until tool failure. Another, more cost-effective material, High Temp Resin produced by Formlabs, another acrylic based photopolymer, was also tested but yielded very little success. Then the mold design was altered by adding conformal cooling channels and again tested by producing injection molded parts while tracking the mold temperature. …

Housing Pre-Fabrication And Resource Optimization, Emma Dubensky
Housing Pre-Fabrication And Resource Optimization, Emma Dubensky
Honors Theses
Enclosure during construction is often time-consuming, expensive, and at the mercy of the weather. By introducing methods for manufacturing prefabricated enclosure components such as wall panels and roof sections, the impact of the three major variables is reduced. Designs for trusses, roof sections, wall sections, and foundations were developed and selected using civil engineering principles; and manufacturing and logistical processes were optimized using engineering and project management skill sets. These multi-disciplinary efforts were combined to create an accessible and versatile set of designs and instructions that can improve the effectiveness of both a skilled and non-skilled volunteer workforce. By creating …

Silicon Oil Drop Experiment, Jacob Lutz
Silicon Oil Drop Experiment, Jacob Lutz
Honors Theses
When designing models for quantum systems, researchers are often limited to computer models to develop a large pool of data. This has always been the case until the discovery was made that bouncing droplets of silicone oil can provide a decent representation of quantum mechanical particles. A system to model this representation was created. It is designed to run continuously for a large number of trials without the need for human interaction, as well as collect motion data from generated oil droplets. The droplet generator system is composed of a fluid reservoir, pump, piezoelectric buzzer, fluid chamber, and a nozzle …
Software Tool For Analyzing The Bending Strength Of Gear Teeth, Tayla Hall
Software Tool For Analyzing The Bending Strength Of Gear Teeth, Tayla Hall
Honors Theses
Current finite element (FE) models for gear analysis are computationally expensive. We will develop a software tool in Excel to efficiently assess the effect of different root geometries on gear tooth bending strength. The tool will assess the change in root stress as the root fillet shape is changed, using a 2-D model of a representative gear tooth using an A to B comparison. This is assumed to correlate to equivalent stress reduction in an actual gear. The tool will be validated by comparing the root stress found using the software to a FE analysis of root stress using ANSYS. …

Microbes are the most abundant and diverse cellular life forms on Earth and colonize a wide range of environmental niches. However, more than 99% of bacterial and archaeal species have not been obtained in pure culture [1] and we have only glimpsed the surface of this mysterious microbial world. This is so-called Microbial Dark Matter (MDM): the enormous diversity of yet-uncultivated microbes that microbiologists can only study by using cultivation-independent techniques. Recently, a number of international projects have dramatically increased our understanding of the extent and distribution of microbial diversity, including the Global Catalogue of Microorganisms (GCM), the Genomic Encyclopedia …
Unvested: How Equity And The Deferred Payment Gamble In Startups Shortchange Employees Targeted By Discrimination, Katie Black
Unvested: How Equity And The Deferred Payment Gamble In Startups Shortchange Employees Targeted By Discrimination, Katie Black
University of Miami Law Review
The new American Dream is not limited to Silicon Valley. Startups span the nation. They exist in a vast array of sizes and ideologies. Nonetheless, by their very nature, startups are boundary-pushing enterprises. For all the world-altering good they can do, sometimes, that crashing-into-walls mentality comes at the price of pushing human and legal boundaries as well. While the entity tries to grow and create, almost hydraulically using what little human and financial capital it may have to build the once-impossible, startup employees can be left to bear the cost when it is their boundaries that are broken. Discrimination is …

Work Motivation Variances Influence On The Three Major Generations In Federal Student Aid, Dallas B. Mallory
Interdisciplinary Leadership Dissertations
Public service motivation (PSM) is a characteristic that is exhibited through employees' desire to serve in the interest of the communities they serve. In keeping up with the current times and technology advances in the workplace, federal agencies are continually introducing new and innovative ways to complete goals in these environments. Government agencies across the United States are repeatedly asking Commissioners and Secretaries to do more work with fewer workers. In addition to fewer public servants in government, the Baby Boomers looking to retire within the next ten years, and the transfer of knowledge to Generation X and Millennials needs …
Investigating Late Paleozoic Tectonic Deformation Of The Western Highland Rim, Tennessee, Tyler John Myrman
Investigating Late Paleozoic Tectonic Deformation Of The Western Highland Rim, Tennessee, Tyler John Myrman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The Western Highland Rim (WHR) of Tennessee is located between the Nashville Dome to the east and the Mississippi Embayment to the west. This region is situated inside the bend of the Appalachian-Ouachita orogen along the eastern margin of the Laurentian craton, making it a location of intrigue for structural analysis. Far-field and local stresses have deformed the WHR across multiple Eras. In the Paleozoic, the Appalachian (east of WHR) and Ouachita (south of WHR) orogenies were both thrusting onto the Laurentian craton. Mesoscale structures recorded in the WHR indicate shortening direction history of these tectonic stresses, how many pulses …

Decoding Perception Of Speech From Behavioral Responses Using Spatio-Temporal Cnns, Kazi Ashraf Moinuddin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Categorical perception (CP) of speech is a complex process reflecting individuals’ ability to perceive sound and is measured using response time (RT). The cognitive processes involved in mapping neural activities to behavioral response are stochastic and further compounded by individuality and variations. This thesis presents a data-driven approach and develops parameter optimized models to understand the relationship between cognitive events and behavioral response (e.g., RT). We introduce convolutional neural networks (CNN) to learn the representation from EEG recordings. In addition, we develop parameter optimized and interpretable models in decoding CP using two representations: 1) spatial-spectral topomaps and 2) evoked response …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Assuming the brain is a prediction machine, we investigate the arrangement of 2D visual features (Gabor filters) such that visual prediction can be carried out efficiently. The contributions of this thesis are threefold: (1) we prove that a 1-mode tensor can be predicted from an n-mode and an (n-1)-mode tensors; (2) using a linear model to predict visual features at varying distances from a given location, we show that prediction error increases smoothly and monotonically with increase in distance and increase in degree of sparsity of the prediction model; (3) we show that the visual features can be arranged in …

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) represent an emerging class of platforms to assemble single site photocatalysts for artificial photosynthesis. In this work, we report a new CO2 reduction photocatalyst (UiO-68-Fe-bpy) based on a robust Zr(IV)-MOF platform with incorporated Fe(bpy)Cl3 (bpy refers to the 4′-methyl-[2,2′-bipyridine] moiety) via amine–aldehyde condensation. We show that this hybrid catalyst can reduce CO2 to form CO under visible light illumination with excellent selectivity and enhanced activity with respect to its parent MOF and corresponding homogeneous counterpart. Using steady state and transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy, we show that the enhanced photocatalytic activity of UiO-68-Fe-bpy is attributed …

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) have recently received increasing attention as powerful modeling tools to improve the performance of recommendation systems. Meta-learning, on the other hand, is a paradigm that has re-surged in popularity within the broader machine learning community over the past several years. In this thesis, we will explore the intersection of these two domains and work on developing methods for integrating meta-learning to design more accurate and flexible recommendation systems.
In the present work, we propose a meta-learning framework for the design of collaborative filtering methods in recommendation systems, drawing from ideas, models, and solutions from modern approaches …
An Improved Foam Modeling Technique And Its Application To Petroleum Drilling And Production Practice, Yanfang Wang
An Improved Foam Modeling Technique And Its Application To Petroleum Drilling And Production Practice, Yanfang Wang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Foam is one of the most common used multiphase fluid in Underbalanced Drilling (UBD) and Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD). Because of its low density, high capacity of lifting and carrying cuttings, low cost and compatibility with formations, foam has become more superior than the conventional drilling mud when depleted reservoir pressure, severe lost circulation, or unstable borehole are encountered. In general, the success of foam applications rely on the understanding of the fundamentals of foam rheology in downhole conditions.
Foam rheology has been studied for decades. Conventional foam rheological models such as Power Law, Bingham Plastic, Herschel-Bulkley to explain foam …

Over the last decade, the area of electroencephalography (EEG) witnessed a progressive move from high-end large measurement devices, relying on accurate construction and providing high sensitivity, to miniature hardware, more specifically wireless wearable EEG devices. While accurate, traditional EEG systems need a complex structure and long periods of application time, unwittingly causing discomfort and distress on the users. Given their size and price, aside from their lower sensitivity and narrower spectrum band(s), wearable EEG devices may be used regularly by individuals for continuous collection of user data from non-medical environments. This allows their usage for diverse, nontraditional, non-medical applications, including …

Fourier-Plane Spot Array Generation Using Lon-Exchanged Diffraction Grating: Experimental And Theoretical Study., Ahmed Shaban Samara
Mansoura Engineering Journal
In This paper, we have employed a double-ion exchanged diffraction grating, to generate experimentally Fourier spot plane arrays. The grating-length-to-beam-width ratio (d/w0) is found to be an important parameter in determining device performance. With beam width 20μm (W0=20μm), center wavelength of λ=0.6328μm, and changing in interaction length (d) and incident angle several basic results are predicted. We compared our results with the numerical solution using fast Fourier transform beam propagation method (FFT. BPM) and there is a good agreement between them.

An 8-Bit Full-Adder Implementation Using Single Electron Tunneling (Set) Technology., Sameh Rehan, Eman Almetwaly
Mansoura Engineering Journal
Single Electron Tunneling (SET) devices have come to be considered as promising candidates for future ultra-low power and high-density integrated circuits. Their potential for ultra-low power is related to that the operation is based on only a few electrons. The term Single Electron Tunneling (SET) technology has been selected for devices sensitive to the manipulation of a single electron even if the device itself requires in fact few electrons. Besides, SET provides a simple and elegant solution for implementing threshold Logic Gates (TLGs). This paper presents a SET TLG one-bit full-adder implemented in SET technology. The paper then introduces the …

Improved Control Strategy For Three-Phase Ac Choppers Under Induction Motor Load., Ali Mohamad Eltamaly
Mansoura Engineering Journal
This paper presents a modified control strategy for controlling three-phase ac chopper under induction motor load. This modified strategy is known as Extinction Angle Control (EAC). This new strategy is compared with the Modified Phase Angle Control (MPAC) and Symmetrical Angle Control (SAC) to demonstrate its superior performance. These strategies are based on varying the stator ac voltage to control the speed of a three-phase induction motor. The proposed strategy is characterized by a higher power factor and a better total harmonic distortion compared with the other two strategies over the normal operating arrangement. Performance evaluation of the motor under …

An interactive and easy to use simulation tool has been developed to simulate and depict normal loads, contact angle, normal deformations, and stresses at any angular position of the rolling element for combined loaded radial ball bearings. The importance of this work comes from the ability to determine the contact angle and induced normal toad at any angular position. The main objective of this work is to lower stresses within the bearings, consequently, bearing fatigue life which is governed by stress level is significantly affected, showing that the lower the stress level the higher the service lifetime. This work is …
