Instrumentation And Application Of Image-Charge Detection Of Electrospray-Charged Microparticles And Microdroplets, Jiuzhi Gao Dec 2020

Instrumentation And Application Of Image-Charge Detection Of Electrospray-Charged Microparticles And Microdroplets, Jiuzhi Gao

Theses and Dissertations

Image-charge detection is emerging as an important tool to analyze heavy and heterogeneous samples because of its unique advantages in measuring highly charged microparticles. Conventional image-charge detection instruments include at least three fundamental components: an ionization source, an aerodynamic particle delivery system, and an image-charge detector. Here I report research efforts that investigated the mechanisms of image-charge detection and proposed some instrumental developments of these components to suit specific research purposes. In Chapter 2, I report an investigation of the electrospray ionization (ESI) mechanism based on an observation that a certain portion of charged particles generated with an ESI source …

Instrumental Quality Attributes Of Alaska Pollock Derived Surimi Gels With Sweet Potato Starch, Kiyonna Williams, Zandra Mikell, Samuel Chetachukwu Adegoke, Reza Tahergorabi

RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences

Starch plays an important role in the formation of the network structure of surimi-starch gels. Alaska Pollock surimi gels were prepared with final moisture of 78%. Sweet potato starch (SPS) and silicon dioxide – inert filler, were added in inverse concentrations to develop treatments of 0% (control), 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8% SPS. Textural properties such as hardness, resilience, cohesiveness, gumminess, and chewiness were positively impacted by SPS. As the concentration of the SPS increased, a non-systematic trend was observed in the Kramer shear force of surimi gels. Total cooking loss and water holding capacity were significantly improved (P < 0.05). Surimi gels showed slight but significant reductions (P < 0.05) in whiteness with SPS addition due to significant decreases (P < 0.05) in L* and an increase in a* values. The Ash content of surimi gels increased with the addition of SPS. These results suggest that SPS can be incorporated into surimi products without compromising quality, which may be useful to manufacturers for marketing surimi products with added health benefits.

Central Asian Problems of Modern Science and Education

This work is devoted to the study of an approximate solution of the initial-boundary value problem for the second order mixed type nonhomogeneous differential equation with two degenerate lines. Similar equations have many different applications, for example, boundary value problems for mixed type equations are applicable in various fields of the natural sciences: in problems of laser physics, in magneto hydrodynamics, in the theory of infinitesimal bindings of surfaces, in the theory of shells, in predicting the groundwater level, in plasma modeling, and in mathematical biology. In this paper, based on the idea of A.N. Tikhonov, the conditional correctness of …

Biological Toxin Use And Disposal Policy Dec 2020

Biological Toxin Use And Disposal Policy

Environmental Health & Safety Policies

Biological toxins are poisonous substances produced by certain microorganisms, animals, and plants. Examples of toxins of biological origin include Diphtheria Toxin, Tetrodotoxin, Pertussis Toxin, Botulinum Toxin, Snake Venom Toxins, Conotoxin and Ricin. Although toxins are derived from biological materials, they do not replicate and are therefore not considered infectious.

However, they may be extremely toxic in very small quantities and must be managed like hazardous chemicals in the workplace. Controls must be in place to ensure staff is protected from exposure. The routes of exposure include inhalation, eye, nose and mucous membrane contact, percutaneous, and skin absorption depending on the …

Methods For Generative Adversarial Output Enhancement, Michael B. Brodie Dec 2020

Methods For Generative Adversarial Output Enhancement, Michael B. Brodie

Theses and Dissertations

Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) learn to synthesize novel samples for a given data distribution. While GANs can train on diverse data of various modalities, the most successful use cases to date apply GANs to computer vision tasks. Despite significant advances in training algorithms and network architectures, GANs still struggle to consistently generate high-quality outputs after training. We present a series of papers that improve GAN output inference qualitatively and quantitatively. The first chapter, Alpha Model Domination, addresses a related subfield of Multiple Choice Learning, which -- like GANs -- aims to generate diverse sets of outputs. The next chapter, CoachGAN, …

From Forests To Fish: Mercury In Mountain Lake Food Webs Influenced By Factors At Multiple Scales, Ariana M. Chiapella, Collin A. Eagles-Smith, Angela L. Strecker

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Mountain lakes, while seemingly pristine, have been subjected to historical fish stocking practices and exposure to atmospherically deposited contaminants like mercury. Mercury bioaccumulation in these ecosystems varies widely due to strong environmental gradients, and there are complex, hierarchical factors that affect mercury transport and loading, methylmercury production, and food web biomagnification. We sought to assess how representative variables associated with watershed, lake, and food web-scale processes—specifically, catchment tree cover, lake benthic primary production, and fish diet, respectively—are associated with mercury concentrations in mountain lake fish. Mean fish mercury concentrations varied threefold between lakes, with nearshore tree cover and fish diet …

Mathematical Model Of The Role Of Asymptomatic Infection In Outbreaks Of Some Emerging Pathogens, Nourridine Siewe, Bradford Greening Jr., Nina H. Fefferman Dec 2020

Mathematical Model Of The Role Of Asymptomatic Infection In Outbreaks Of Some Emerging Pathogens, Nourridine Siewe, Bradford Greening Jr., Nina H. Fefferman

Articles

Preparation for outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases is often predicated on beliefs that we will be able to understand the epidemiological nature of an outbreak early into its inception. However, since many rare emerging diseases exhibit different epidemiological behaviors from outbreak to outbreak, early and accurate estimation of the epidemiological situation may not be straightforward in all cases. Previous studies have proposed considering the role of active asymptomatic infections co-emerging and co-circulating as part of the process of emergence of a novel pathogen. Thus far, consideration of the role of asymptomatic infections in emerging disease dynamics have usually avoided considering …

Antimicrobial Peptide Development: From Massively Parallel Peptide Sequencing To Bioinformatic Motif Identification, Alexander K. Erikson Dec 2020

Antimicrobial Peptide Development: From Massively Parallel Peptide Sequencing To Bioinformatic Motif Identification, Alexander K. Erikson

Theses and Dissertations

The isolation, purification, and clinical deployment of antibiotics is one of the major drivers of decrease in morbidity and mortality from infectious bacteria in the 20th century. The rapid, ubiquitous deployment of antibiotics encouraged swift development and distribution of antibiotic resistance. New, novel techniques, technologies, and ultimately therapeutic antimicrobial compounds will be required to counter the rise of antibiotic resistant microbes. Historically, mimicking naturally occurring compounds has been the most fruitful method for discovering new antibiotics; unsurprisingly, many recent efforts have focused on expanding the cultivation and detection of previously unknown microbes and compounds, respectively. Other techniques explore developing compounds …

Reinforcement Learning Approach For Inspect/Correct Tasks, Hoda Nasereddin Dec 2020

Reinforcement Learning Approach For Inspect/Correct Tasks, Hoda Nasereddin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this research, we focus on the application of reinforcement learning (RL) in automated agent tasks involving considerable target variability (i.e., characterized by stochastic distributions); in particular, learning of inspect/correct tasks. Examples include automated identification & correction of rivet failures in airplane maintenance procedures, and automated cleaning of surgical instruments in a hospital sterilization processing department. The location of defects and the corrective action to be taken for each varies from task episode. What needs to be learned are optimal stochastic strategies rather than optimization of any one single defect type and location. RL has been widely applied in robotics …

A Morphological Phylogeny Of Odonatoptera: Examining Missing Data In A Group With A Lot Of "Naturally" Missing Data, Robert James Erickson Dec 2020

A Morphological Phylogeny Of Odonatoptera: Examining Missing Data In A Group With A Lot Of "Naturally" Missing Data, Robert James Erickson

Theses and Dissertations

Odonatopera exhibit a wide diversity of morphologies for an ancient group of winged insects. A morphological matrix of 463 characters is compiled for 347 extant and fossil representatives used in parsimony analyses, implemented in TNT, to document arrangements of taxonomic groups above the family level. Missing data and other challenges approaches implemented and interpretation of the results. We employ a novel approach to testing monophyly relative to quantities of missing data for each taxon. Phylogenetic reconstructions recover patterns of monophyly and trends based on missing data. We discuss the implications of our findings on missing data as well as limitations …

Profiling Genome-Wide Dna Methylation Patterns In Human Aortic And Mitral Valves, Sarah Halawa Dec 2020

Profiling Genome-Wide Dna Methylation Patterns In Human Aortic And Mitral Valves, Sarah Halawa

Theses and Dissertations

Cardiac valve structure and function are complex and include dynamic interactions between cells, extracellular matrix (ECM) and their hemodynamic environment. Valvular gene expression is tightly regulated by a variety of mechanisms including epigenetic factors such as histone modifications, RNA-based mechanisms and DNA methylation. To date, methylation fingerprints of non-diseased human aortic and mitral valves have not been studied. In this work I analyzed the differential methylation profiles of 12 non-diseased aortic and mitral valve tissue samples (in matched pairs). Methylation data were acquired via reduced representation bisulfite sequencing (RRBS). Of 1601 promoters analyzed genome-wide, my analysis revealed 584 differentially methylated …

Structures And Characteristics Of Macromolecular Interactions In Gas Phase Using Fourier-Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry, Jiewen Shen Dec 2020

Structures And Characteristics Of Macromolecular Interactions In Gas Phase Using Fourier-Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry, Jiewen Shen

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates non-covalent macromolecular chemistry using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS) based techniques. The included studies reveal the impact of molecular structure on conformation and binding energetics. Supramolecules that might be too heavy to be dissociated in single collision-induced dissociation (CID) were dissociated using sustained off-resonance collision induced dissociation (SORI-CID) techniques. Relative binding energies and thresholds were evaluated for various macromolecular host-guest systems. Besides the non-covalent binding energies, conformation characterization was undertaken by a novel method to determine collision cross sectional areas using FTICR (CRAFTI, and multi-CRAFTI), initially developed by the Dearden lab. The systems chosen …
