A Preliminary Investigation Of The Impact Of Forest Management Practices On Microhabitat Abiotic Variables In The Southern Appalachian Mountains, Jasmine Williamson, Allison Bailey, Jacob Lougee, David Patterson, Jessica Patterson

Georgia Journal of Science

Existing research has demonstrated that forest management practices (e.g., clear-cutting, planting) can dramatically impact animal communities. This is particularly the case with amphibian populations due to their sensitivity to microhabitat alterations. However, few studies have investigated the manner by which forest management practices impact the abiotic variables most relevant to healthy amphibian populations. In this study we investigated how spatially localized forest management practices (i.e., at the scale of hundreds of meters) alter the microhabitat variables that have been shown important to amphibian population distributions. We assessed the relationship between forest composition and microhabitat abiotic variables across three localities with …

Treatment Options For Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Shao-Chih Hsieh, Szu-Ting Chou, Yu-Chuan Tseng

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is sleep-disordered breathing caused by the collapse of the upper airway. Because anatomical abnormalities of the narrow upper airway are undoubtedly the most critical cause of OSA, the available treatment methods for OSA mostly focus on these anatomical problems. The collapse of the respiratory tract is associated with different levels of upper airway obstruction. The obstruction of the airway can be divided into three parts: the nasal cavity, retropalatal region, and retrolingual region. This article summarizes some common OSA treatment methods, their underlying theories, and their effect on the upper airway.

The Shape Of Metabolism: Mitochondrial Dynamics, Remodeling, And Bioenergetic Reprogramming In Disease, Carl Decker Jul 2020

The Shape Of Metabolism: Mitochondrial Dynamics, Remodeling, And Bioenergetic Reprogramming In Disease, Carl Decker

KGI Theses and Dissertations

Mitochondria are dynamic, double-membrane bound hubs of bioenergetics, cell signaling, and redox balance that exist as an oscillating network of fused superstructures and smaller, single organelles. Importantly, their position at the junction of catabolic and anabolic metabolism connects these morphological fluctuations to larger cellular metabolic programs, which in turn have implicated mitochondrial dynamics in a number of disease states and a varied set of cell phenomena. For example, differentiation of memory t-cells is dependent on mitochondrial network morphology, and in particular on remodeling dynamics that yield fused mitochondrial assemblies favoring oxidative phosphorylation-driven metabolism. In contrast, many cancers have been shown …

Role Of Lncrna Morrbid In Ptpn11(Shp2)E76k-Driven Juvenile Myelomonocytic Leukemia., Zhigang Cai, Chi Zhang, Jonathan J Kotzin, Adam Williams, Jorge Henao-Mejia, Reuben Kapur

Faculty Research 2020

Mutations in PTPN11, which encodes the protein tyrosine phosphatase SHP2, contribute to ∼35% of cases of juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML). A common clinical picture in children with JMML is that it presents as a constitutive hyperinflammatory syndrome, partially reminiscent of chronic myelomonocytic leukemia in adults. Thus, a component of JMML is associated with a hyperinflammatory state and abundant innate immune cells such as neutrophils and monocytes. Recently, we showed that the evolutionarily conserved mouse lncRNA Morrbid is specifically expressed in myeloid cells and uniquely represses the expression of the proapoptotic gene Bim to regulate the lifespan of myeloid cells. However, …

Faculty Research 2020

During endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation (ERAD), the cytoplasmic enzyme N-glycanase 1 (NGLY1) is proposed to remove N-glycans from misfolded N-glycoproteins after their retrotranslocation from the ER to the cytosol. We previously reported that NGLY1 regulates Drosophila BMP signaling in a tissue-specific manner (Galeone et al., 2017). Here, we establish the Drosophila Dpp and its mouse ortholog BMP4 as biologically relevant targets of NGLY1 and find, unexpectedly, that NGLY1-mediated deglycosylation of misfolded BMP4 is required for its retrotranslocation. Accumulation of misfolded BMP4 in the ER results in ER stress and prompts the ER recruitment of NGLY1. The ER-associated NGLY1 …

Computational Identification Of Gene Networks As A Biomarker Of Neuroblastoma Risk, Lidan Sun, Libo Jiang, Christa N Grant, Hong-Gang Wang, Claudia Gragnoli, Zhenqiu Liu, Rongling Wu

Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases Faculty Papers

Neuroblastoma is a common cancer in children, affected by a number of genes that interact with each other through intricate but coordinated networks. Traditional approaches can only reconstruct a single regulatory network that is topologically not informative enough to explain the complexity of neuroblastoma risk. We implemented and modified an advanced model for recovering informative, omnidirectional, dynamic, and personalized networks (idopNetworks) from static gene expression data for neuroblastoma risk. We analyzed 3439 immune genes of neuroblastoma for 217 high-risk patients and 30 low-risk patients by which to reconstruct large patient-specific idopNetworks. By converting these networks into risk-specific representations, we found …

Selective Translation Of Low Abundance And Upregulated Transcripts In Halobacterium Salinarum., Adrián López García De Lomana, Ulrike Kusebauch, Arjun V Raman, Min Pan, Serdar Turkarslan, Alan P R Lorenzetti, Robert L Moritz, Nitin Baliga

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

When organisms encounter an unfavorable environment, they transition to a physiologically distinct, quiescent state wherein abundant transcripts from the previous active growth state continue to persist, albeit their active transcription is downregulated. In order to generate proteins for the new quiescent physiological state, we hypothesized that the translation machinery must selectively translate upregulated transcripts in an intracellular milieu crowded with considerably higher abundance transcripts from the previous active growth state. Here, we have analyzed genome-wide changes in the transcriptome (RNA sequencing [RNA-seq]), changes in translational regulation and efficiency by ribosome profiling across all transcripts (ribosome profiling [Ribo-seq]), and protein level …

Mycobacterium tuberculosis and M. smegmatis form drug-tolerant biofilms through dedicated genetic programs. In support of a stepwise process regulating biofilm production in mycobacteria, it was shown elsewhere that lsr2 participates in intercellular aggregation, while groEL1 was required for biofilm maturation in M. smegmatis. Here, by means of RNA-Seq, we monitored the early steps of biofilm production in M. bovis BCG, to distinguish intercellular aggregation from attachment to a surface. Genes encoding for the transcriptional regulators dosR and BCG0114 (Rv0081) were significantly regulated and responded differently to intercellular aggregation and surface attachment. Moreover, a M. tuberculosis H37Rv deletion mutant in the …
