Costs And Benefits Of Hipv-Mediated Eavesdropping Under Field Conditions., Grace Ellin Freundlich
Costs And Benefits Of Hipv-Mediated Eavesdropping Under Field Conditions., Grace Ellin Freundlich
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Eavesdropping is defined as the act of an organism taking advantage of a cue that was not originally intended for them for their own gain. Plant-mediated eavesdropping is a widely documented phenomenon and eavesdropping cues range from oviposition cues to airborne volatile compounds. Eavesdropping is predicted to be widespread because eavesdropping confers a fitness advantage. In plants, eavesdropping on herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) often results in enhanced resistance profiles upon herbivory. As a result of this enhanced resistance, it is predicted that eavesdropping alone incurs minor costs due to resource shifts towards inducible defense responses. Although HIPV-mediated eavesdropping is widely …
Therapeutic Rupture Repair In Treatment Of Military Adolescents., Brent Anthony Luebcke
Therapeutic Rupture Repair In Treatment Of Military Adolescents., Brent Anthony Luebcke
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ruptures in the therapeutic alliance have shown to be a significant predictor of therapy outcomes, with non-repaired ruptures resulting in increased dropout rates of therapy, and repaired ruptures resulting in positive therapy outcomes. This study investigated the impact of alliance ruptures on outcomes of therapy among youth and adolescents, with a specific focus on military youth and adolescents. A sample of 5,640 military adolescents who were treated by 101 therapists were selected for analysis based on inclusion criteria of: a) being aged 13 to 19 years old; and b) attending more than one session of therapy. Each session, clients completed …
Mechanisms Of Chromate-Induced Suppression Of Rad51: A One Environmental Health Approach., Rachel M. Speer
Mechanisms Of Chromate-Induced Suppression Of Rad51: A One Environmental Health Approach., Rachel M. Speer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death. Lung cancer is commonly associated with smoking, however, 1 in 5 women and 1 in 12 men who develop lung cancer are never-smokers. Environmental exposures, therefore, account for a significant portion of lung cancer cases. Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] is a global environmental contaminant and known human lung carcinogen. Cr(VI) and other carcinogenic metals induce chromosome instability, an early event in lung cancer. Structural chromosome instability arises in part due to failed DNA repair. Particulate Cr(VI), the most potent form of Cr(VI), induces DNA double strand breaks and inhibits the high-fidelity DNA …
Genes Involved In Nitrogen Assimilation In Ustilago Maydis., Sunita Khanal
Genes Involved In Nitrogen Assimilation In Ustilago Maydis., Sunita Khanal
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
U. maydis can utilize nitrate as a source of nitrogen from its environment, a process requiring a nitrate transporter to bring the nitrate inside the cell. This is followed by a two-step reduction of nitrate to ammonium. At first, nitrate reductase reduces nitrate into nitrite; in the second reaction, nitrite is reduced to ammonium by nitrite reductase. The goal of the study was to identify the nitrate transporter and nitrite reductase genes in U. maydis and characterize them based on their role in mating and virulence. The genes um03848 and um03849 were identified bioinformatically as encoding, respectively, the nitrite reductase …
Water Cluster Motifs In Structurally Similar N-(2-Aminoethyl)-1-Methylimidazole-2-Carboxamide Metal Complexes: Synthesis, Characterization, Thermal And Electrical Properties., Nina Saraei
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Water is a remarkable molecule and in all of its forms exhibits an amazing collection of properties and functions. Besides its crucial role in life and many technological processes, water displays some unusual and anomalous properties at various interfaces and under different conditions. Although the role of hydrogen-bonding interactions and their fluctuations are well known to determine the properties of water, the main obstacle exists in the complexity of correctly describing the interactions between water molecules. The key to understanding the behavior of water is to collect precise structural data of various H-bonded water networks in diverse environments. In this …
Exploring Black "Saviors": A Content Analysis Of Black Characters And Racial Discourses In Obama-Era Films., Eric A. Jordan
Exploring Black "Saviors": A Content Analysis Of Black Characters And Racial Discourses In Obama-Era Films., Eric A. Jordan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation analyzes how black characters across twenty movies released in the years 2006-2018 inspire, coach, “save,” or “rescue” other characters. Studies on “savior” characters in film tend to focus on white savior characters who seek to “save” people of color from harm. When comparing black characters and white saviors, I find that black characters use three specific strategies—revolution, vigilantism, and altruism —to help other characters. The characters who use the revolution and vigilantism strategies seem to be what I call “black saviors” who work to fight against institutional and systemic racism to save the black diaspora. Altruistic characters seem …
Comparative Secretomics And Functional Analysis Of Effectors Utilized By The Microbotryum Genus Of Anther-Smut Fungal Pathogens, And Their Role In Host-Specificity., William Christopher Beckerson
Comparative Secretomics And Functional Analysis Of Effectors Utilized By The Microbotryum Genus Of Anther-Smut Fungal Pathogens, And Their Role In Host-Specificity., William Christopher Beckerson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Understanding how pathogens evolve in response to changes in their host is paramount to combating the spread of emergent strains of disease. This is particularly true for plant pathogens that cause billions of dollars of damages to crops globally, every year. Understanding the molecular interactions between pathogens and their hosts therefore sheds light on the coevolutionary arms race that can result in host-specificity and host-shifts in plant pathogens. This research approaches the question of how fungal pathogens interact with their plant hosts utilizing both unique and shared arsenals of secreted proteins (SPs) during infection, and addresses the question of whether …
Gun Ownership As An Expression Of Whiteness And Masculinity., Michael Daugherty
Gun Ownership As An Expression Of Whiteness And Masculinity., Michael Daugherty
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Public discourse on the topic of gun ownership in the U.S. is polarized, with the debate framed as a binary between unquestioned gun rights versus a complete ban. Gun ownership can have grave consequences: guns are used to commit acts of violence and suicide. Interviews with white male gun owners explore the influence of white backlash, masculinity, and racial identity development in their decisions to own guns. This project explores the extent these reasons are related to race on the part of white males, starting with these two questions: How much does race play a factor in the action and …
Tissue-Resident Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cells Modulate Immune Homeostasis In Healthy Adipose., Katlin Brooke Stivers
Tissue-Resident Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cells Modulate Immune Homeostasis In Healthy Adipose., Katlin Brooke Stivers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Our goal with this study was to gain insight into the homeostatic immune cell network in healthy adipose tissue. Specifically, we sought to determine if the immature myeloid cells found in healthy and inflamed adipose were, in fact, tissue-resident myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs). Using various in vitro and in vivo methods, we have uncovered a population of CD11bHi Ly6CHi Ly6G- MDSCs resident in healthy adipose tissue. To the best of our knowledge this is the first time that these cells have been investigated and described in healthy adipose tissue. Systemic MDSC depletion lead to the accumulation of …
Plasmodium Impairs Antibacterial Innate Immunity To Systemic Infections In Part Through Hemozoin-Bound Bioactive Molecules., Christopher Lynn Harding
Plasmodium Impairs Antibacterial Innate Immunity To Systemic Infections In Part Through Hemozoin-Bound Bioactive Molecules., Christopher Lynn Harding
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Despite efforts to decrease the global health burden of malaria, infections with Plasmodium species continue to cause over 200 million episodes of malaria each year which resulted in 405,000 deaths in 2018 [1]. One complication of malaria is increased susceptibility to invasive bacterial infections. Plasmodium infections impair host immunity to non-Typhoid Salmonella (NTS) through activities of heme oxygenase I (HO-I) )-induced release of immature granulocytes and myeloid cell-derived IL-10. Yet, it is not known if these mechanisms are specific to NTS. We show here, that Plasmodium yoelii 17XNL (Py) infected mice had impaired clearance of systemic Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) during …
The Nigerian-American Immigration Experience: Overcoming Adversity Through Resilence., K. Chinwe Idigo
The Nigerian-American Immigration Experience: Overcoming Adversity Through Resilence., K. Chinwe Idigo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Nigerian-Americans are a fast-growing population in the United States, when compared to other immigrant groups. Despite growing numbers there is limited empirical research examining pathways that facilitate success among this immigrant population. This study addresses the dearth in literature by proposing and testing a modified ABCX model of family resilience among Nigerian-Americans. It is hypothesized that similar to other immigrant, and racial/ethnic minority groups in the United States, NigerianAmericans employ protective factors such as ethnic identity and resilience to buffer the effects of acculturative stress and perceived discrimination on well-being and psychological distress. Regression analyses suggest some consistency with the …

Application Of Machine Learning Technologies For Detection Of Proximal Lesions In Intraoral Digital Images: In Vitro Study., Rohit Vadlamani
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background: Interpretation of bitewing radiographs is influenced by factors such as acquisition parameters (e.g. exposure, type of sensor), clinical technique, visualization (e.g. monitor type and calibration) and the observer (e.g. experience and fatigue bias). We hypothesized that the use of artificial intelligence (AI) will reduce visualization and observer factor in bitewing interpretation and improve diagnostic accuracy. Objective: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the use of AI in the form of a machine-learning algorithm to detect and quantify proximal lesions compared with human trained observers. Methods: 16,000 anonymized, digital bitewings of patients were hand searched and non-bitewing, …
Analysis Of Twenty-First Century Zines., Anna Blake
Analysis Of Twenty-First Century Zines., Anna Blake
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is an analysis of twenty-first century zines as markedly different from their predecessors. The twenty-first century zine is often framed as a continuation of the punk zines from the late twentieth century, this thesis disagrees and argues for the classification of the twenty-first century zine as a unique form of culture that has evolved from the punk zines of the 1980s and 90s. The thesis is divided into five chapters in which the twenty-first century zine is analyzed using specific examples. Chapter one begins with an introduction of the zine, defining the object based on its social consequences …
Electrochemically-Modulated Surface Plasmon Waves At A Nano-Scale For Investigations And Applications Of Redox Assemblies., Aymen Hasan Qatamin
Electrochemically-Modulated Surface Plasmon Waves At A Nano-Scale For Investigations And Applications Of Redox Assemblies., Aymen Hasan Qatamin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, an electrochemically-modulated surface plasmon resonance (EC-SPR) technique was developed for challenging investigations and applications in different redox assemblies. The principle of the technique is based on the nano-scale confined and sensitive interplay between a surface plasmon wave and a redox-active probe featuring an optical transition when undergoing a faradaic redox process. Such faradaic process is electrochemically controlled by modulating the surface electric potential of the SPR platform to create an optical output signal that is substantially immune to the negative impacts of background environment and enabling the identification and quantification minute properties linked to a molecular event …
A Screen For Peptides Targeting Chemoresistant Metastatic Triple-Negative Breast Cancer, Shraddha Subramanian
A Screen For Peptides Targeting Chemoresistant Metastatic Triple-Negative Breast Cancer, Shraddha Subramanian
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Cancer metastasis is the principal cause of most cancer-associated morbidities. While radiotherapy, hormone therapy, and novel therapeutic strategies, including immunotherapy, have shown promise in inhibiting tumor growth, chemotherapy remains the mainstay in the clinical management of metastatic progression. This is often the case in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), an aggressive breast cancer subtype where tumorigenesis is independent of HER-2, progesterone, or estrogen receptor expression. Despite improving TNBC prognosis, recent studies report that after chemotherapy administration, TNBC drug-tolerant tumor cell survival, relapse, and metastatic dissemination may be promoted. Overcoming drug resistance exhibited by metastatic tumor cells is a challenge owing to …
Longitudinal Clonal Lineage Dynamics And Functional Characterization Of Pancreatic Cancer Chemo-Resistance And Metastasization, Chieh-Yuan Li
Longitudinal Clonal Lineage Dynamics And Functional Characterization Of Pancreatic Cancer Chemo-Resistance And Metastasization, Chieh-Yuan Li
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
In recent years, technological advancements, such as next-generation sequencing and single-cell interrogation techniques, have enriched our understanding in tumor heterogeneity. By dissecting tumors and characterizing clonal lineages, we are better understanding the intricacies of tumor evolution. Tumors are represented by the presence of and dynamic interactions amongst clonal lineages. Each lineage and each cell contributes to tumor dynamics through intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms, and the variable responses of clones to perturbations in the environment, especially therapeutics, underlie disease progression and relapse. Thus, there exists a pressing need to understand the molecular mechanisms that determine the functional heterogeneity of tumor sub-clones …
The End Is Upon Us: Attila The Hun And The Christian Apocalypse, Nathan Landrum
The End Is Upon Us: Attila The Hun And The Christian Apocalypse, Nathan Landrum
Masters Theses
Since their arrival onto the European landscape from beyond Scythia, the land north of the Black Sea and the Caucasus Mountains, the Huns were originally perceived by the Roman world as a seemingly unknowable, uncivilized barbarian group that instilled fear on the unfortunate peoples in their path. As the Huns migrated further south and eventually permanently settled in the Great Hungarian Plain, the Romans’ original perception largely remained intact, but with great alterations. By the campaigns of Attila in the mid-fifth century, as numerous cities and towns were utterly destroyed across the Balkans, Gaul, and northern Italy, Attila and the …
Characterization Of Human Pyrroline-5-Carboxylate Reductase Enzymes Responsible For L-Proline Biosynthesis, Sagar Patel
Characterization Of Human Pyrroline-5-Carboxylate Reductase Enzymes Responsible For L-Proline Biosynthesis, Sagar Patel
Department of Biochemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Pyrroline-5-carboxylate reductases (EC 1.5.1.2) are important housekeeping enzymes of L-proline biosynthesis, which generate L-proline and influence redox cycling of NAD(P)H/NAD(P)+ to support cellular growth in all domains of life. Structural evidence from X-ray crystal structures of HsPYCR1 (PDB codes 5UAT, 5UAU, and 5UAV) shows both NADPH bound in the N-terminal Rao-Rossmann fold motif and an important hydrogen bond or proton donor role for Thr238 with L-P5C. The Thr238Ala mutation results in 10-fold loss in catalytic efficiency with varied L-P5C relative to the wild-type enzyme, thus indicating Thr238’s potential hydrogen bond and proton donation to L-P5C is critical for catalysis. …
Development Of Novel Catalysts For Hydrogen Gas Production From Biomass Compounds, Boanerges Bamaca
Development Of Novel Catalysts For Hydrogen Gas Production From Biomass Compounds, Boanerges Bamaca
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Hydrothermal biomass gasification technologies (sub- and supercritical water gasification and aqueous-phase reforming) have considerable economic, environmental, and technical advantages over other energy-extensive technologies (e.g. natural gas reforming) for hydrogen gas production. However, lack of economically feasible and highly active catalysts is a main challenge that impedes upscaling of these technologies for hydrogen gas production.
The goal of this study was to develop innovative, economically feasible and active heterogeneous supported metal catalysts for hydrothermal processes for producing hydrogen gas from biomass-derived compounds. Because of its stable structure and chemical inertness, graphene was used as catalyst support. Graphene supported metal catalysts were …
Teaching The Syllabus At The Community College, Yuemin He
Teaching The Syllabus At The Community College, Yuemin He
Inquiry: The Journal of the Virginia Community Colleges
Reacting directly to the fact that even the best syllabus is worthless to the student who does not read it, this essay draws inspiration from research of the past decade, especially from the learning-focused syllabus concept that was introduced by three researchers at the University of Virginia, and uses a questionnaire to gauge our community college students’ needs. It suggests specific methods to build the bridge between course content instruction and syllabus teaching. Ultimately, it contributes to the discussion of several important syllabus-related questions: How can instructors use the syllabus as a pedagogical tool to build a strong student rapport? …

Consequences Of The Misidentification Of Museum Specimens: The Taxonomic Status Of Canis Lupaster Soudanicus, Andrew C. Kitchener, Fabio A. Machado, Virginia Hayssen, Patricia D. Moehlman, Suvi Viranta
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Researchers are increasingly using museum collections for taxonomy, systematics, phylogenetics, and faunal analyses, and they assume that taxonomic identifications on museum labels are correct. However, identifications may be incorrect or out of date, which could result in false conclusions from subsequent research. A recent geometric morphometrics analysis of skulls of African canids by Machado and Teta (2020) suggested that Canis lupaster soudanicus is a junior synonym of Lupulella adusta. However, the holotype of soudanicus was not measured and further investigation of the putative soudanicus specimens used in this study showed that these originally were identified as L. adusta. …

Leaf Carbon Export And Nonstructural Carbohydrates In Relation To Diurnal Water Dynamics In Mature Oak Trees, Jess T. Gersony, Uri Hochberg, Fulton E. Rockwell, Maria Park, Paul P.G. Gauthier, N. Michele Holbrook
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Trees typically experience large diurnal depressions in water potential, which may impede carbon export from leaves during the day because the xylem is the source of water for the phloem. As water potential becomes more negative, higher phloem osmotic concentrations are needed to draw water in from the xylem. Generating this high concentration of sugar in the phloem is particularly an issue for the ∼50% of trees that exhibit passive loading. These ideas motivate the hypothesis that carbon export in woody plants occurs predominantly at night, with sugars that accumulate during the day assisting in mesophyll turgor maintenance or being …

Resiliency As A Moderating Factor For The Impact Of Adverse Childhood Experiences On Substance Use In American Indian And Caucasian College Students, Emily Sargent
Theses and Dissertations
College students engage in frequent substance use behaviors and experience related consequences. Previous research suggests American Indians (AIs) experience higher rates of substance use and related consequences. Further, AIs may experience negative substance use outcomes given higher rates of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). However, resiliency (i.e., experiencing positive outcomes despite adversity in one’s life) may be one factor that moderates the relationship between ACEs and substance use to in order to reduce use and negative consequences. The current study examined alcohol and drug use/consequences, ACEs, and resiliency among AI (n = 69) and Caucasian (CA; n= 91) university students via …

A New Perspective On Social Media Use, Loneliness, And Cyberbullying, Danielle M. Brecht
A New Perspective On Social Media Use, Loneliness, And Cyberbullying, Danielle M. Brecht
Psychology Theses - Archive
The rates of social media use, cyberbullying, and loneliness are interrelated and simultaneously on the rise. Applying Jensen-Campbell’s Stress Model of Peer Victimization (Knack, Jensen-Campbell, & Baum, 2011) and the Evolutionary Theory of Loneliness (Cacioppo & Cacioppo, 2018) it is proposed that the negative health effects of social media may be attributed in part to chronic loneliness and cyberbullying. When lonely people recognize a lack of beneficial relationships (i.e., salutary relationship postulate) it may cause their behaviors to become more self-focused (i.e., self-preservation postulate) and they may use social media to fulfill the social disconnect by engaging in cyberbullying perpetration …

Investigation Of Range Verification In Carbon Ion Therapy Using Monte Carlo Simulation, Ananta Chalise
Physics Dissertations - Archive
Carbon ion therapy is one of the advanced forms for radiotherapy and currently only available in few developed countries. Unlike conventional radiation therapy methods, carbon ion therapy has high potential in treating deep-seated and photon-radiation resistant tumors owing to its unique dose-conformality, higher relative biological effect and lower oxygen enhancement ratio. However, due to the lack of precise range verification tools in routine clinic, carbon ion therapy has not been used to its full potentiality. In this work, we used a Monte Carlo simulation tool, Geant4, to investigate range verification for carbon ion therapy. Geant4 is one of the well-stablished …
