Quantifying Animal Movement: Using A Power-Law To Model The Relationship Between First Passage Time And Scale, Zoë Johnson
Quantifying Animal Movement: Using A Power-Law To Model The Relationship Between First Passage Time And Scale, Zoë Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
In a heterogenous environment, an animal will increase its search effort in areas where resources are abundant. This behavior can be detected in a path by a decrease in speed, an increase in tortuosity, or both. First passage time, the amount of time required for an animal to traverse a circle of a given radius, or buffer, is a common metric for quantifying spatial and temporal changes along a path. Historical methodology involving first passage time limits the utility of this metric. Here we instead follow the methodology put forth by Street et al. (2018) and use a power-law model …
Removal Of Molybdenum From Contaminated Water Using Douglas Fir Biochar/Iron Oxide Composites, Naba Krishna Das
Removal Of Molybdenum From Contaminated Water Using Douglas Fir Biochar/Iron Oxide Composites, Naba Krishna Das
Theses and Dissertations
Molybdenum (Mo) is a naturally occurring trace element that is present in drinking water mostly in the molybdate (MoO42-) form in well water. Recently, the EPA deemed Mo as a potential contaminant because exposure can lead to health effects such as gout, hyperuricemia, and lung cancer. In this work, we have assessed the sorptive removal of Mo using Douglas fir biochar (DFBC) and its chemically-coprecipitated iron oxide analogue (DFMBC). Adsorption was studied varying the batch sorption conditions; pH, equilibrium time (5 min-24 h), initial Mo concentrations (2.5-1000 mg/L), temperatures (5, 25, and 40 °C) and equilibrium method. Langmuir capacities for …
Response Of Male White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) To Human Activity On The Landscape, Colby Henderson
Response Of Male White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) To Human Activity On The Landscape, Colby Henderson
Theses and Dissertations
Human activity affects white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) movement and habitat selection during all times of the year, but knowledge is limited regarding how human risk affects white-tailed deer during the summer and winter. During spring and summer, variation in patch selection varied. Natural vegetation was selected for early in the year, with anthropogenic forages being important for deer use during the summer. During the winter, deer responded to different levels of risk. As hunter risk increased on the landscape, deer altered selection of the landscape. Deer avoided areas that were heavily used by hunters, using areas containing less hunter risk. …
Nonoscillatory Second-Order Procedures For Partial Differential Equations Of Nonsmooth Data, Philku Lee
Nonoscillatory Second-Order Procedures For Partial Differential Equations Of Nonsmooth Data, Philku Lee
Theses and Dissertations
Elliptic obstacle problems are formulated to find either superharmonic solutions or minimal surfaces that lie on or over the obstacles, by incorporating inequality constraints. This dissertation investigates simple iterative algorithms based on the successive over-relaxation (SOR) method. It introduces subgrid methods to reduce accuracy deterioration occurring near the free boundary when the mesh grid does not match with the free boundary. For nonlinear obstacle problems, a method of gradient-weighting is introduced to solve the problem more conveniently and efficiently. The iterative algorithm is analyzed for convergence for both linear and nonlinear obstacle problems. Parabolic initial-boundary value problems with nonsmooth data …
Phosphate Reclamation From Water Using Douglas Fir Biochar Fe/Mg-Ldh Composites, Sharifur Rahman
Phosphate Reclamation From Water Using Douglas Fir Biochar Fe/Mg-Ldh Composites, Sharifur Rahman
Theses and Dissertations
Eutrophication, caused by phosphate, can be detrimental both for the aquatic environment and human health. This research aims to provide deep knowledge about the adsorption properties of low-cost Fe/Mg layered double hydroxide modified biochar (LDHBC) for removal of phosphate from aqueous solution. Firstly, Fe/Mg layered double hydroxide (LDH) was synthesized by mixing FeCl3 and MgCl2. 6H2O salts in water, followed by NaOH treatment (coprecipitation method). For LDHBC, FeCl3, and MgCl2. 6H2O salts were dissolved in water, and Douglas fir biochar was added to the salts mixture to make a slurry, followed by NaOH treatment. The surface chemistry and elemental composition …
Early Administration Of Probiotics Through In Ovo Inoculation And Their Impact On Gut Microflora, Immune Response, And Growth Performance Of Broiler Chicks, Claudia Duneska Castañeda Bustillo
Early Administration Of Probiotics Through In Ovo Inoculation And Their Impact On Gut Microflora, Immune Response, And Growth Performance Of Broiler Chicks, Claudia Duneska Castañeda Bustillo
Theses and Dissertations
Controlling pathogenic presence in broilers has become a priority in the poultry industry to prevent economic losses due to disease and infection, as well as the possible contamination of chicken products. The use of antibiotics reduces the incidence of infections; however, their removal from production initiated the search for suitable alternatives. Probiotic ineed supplements have been widely evaluated as alternatives. Probiotic use has improved broiler performance, reduced pathogenic loads, and stimulated the immune system at later life stages. However, there is still a gap in protection during the first weeks after the chick hatches. The in ovo supplementation of probiotics …
Characterization Of Integrin-Linked Kinase Functions In Cell Wall Immunity, Emily Cooley
Characterization Of Integrin-Linked Kinase Functions In Cell Wall Immunity, Emily Cooley
Theses and Dissertations
Plants have several defense systems used as protection from environmental stressors, and the plant cell wall (CW) is considered the “frontline” during attack. The CW is a complex structure essential for growth and development and is composed of components such as cellulose, polysaccharides, pectin, and lignin. Lignin is the central source of strength for the CW and helps form a water-impermeable barrier for defense. The extent of plant CW defense, immunity, and the components involved still need further investigation. Integrin-Linked Kinases (ILKs), a subfamily of Raf-like kinases (RAFs), are thought to participate in signal-processing pathways of the CW and plasma …
Characterizing Human Receptor-Mediated Cytotoxicity By Staphylococcal Bi-Component Leucocidins In S. Aureus Pathogenesis, Jaime Rutter
Characterizing Human Receptor-Mediated Cytotoxicity By Staphylococcal Bi-Component Leucocidins In S. Aureus Pathogenesis, Jaime Rutter
Theses and Dissertations
Staphylococcus aureus employs an array of virulence factors to aid in its pathogenesis. A subset of cytotoxins termed bi-component leucocidins have been characterized as important determinants in the host-pathogen interaction in S. aureus infections. While they have been studied over a century, bi-component leucocidins’ complex mechanisms in pathogenesis have not been fully elucidated. Secreted as monomers, with the exception of LukAB/GH, many combinations of the S- (HlgA, HlgC, LukE, LukS, LukA/H) and F- (HlgB, LukD, LukF, LukB/G) components have demonstrated cell lysis via pore formation and a magnified proinflammatory response at sublytic concentrations. While studies have described various host cellular …
Conservation And Coexistence Of A Federally Listed Species Within A Landscape Highly Modified For Commodity Production: Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus Polyphemus) And Intensive Pine (Pinus Spp.) Management, Duston R. Duffie
Theses and Dissertations
Gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus; hereinafter, tortoise) is listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in the western portion of its range. Across the species’ range, approximately 70 % of potential habitat is privately owned, and these properties are often managed primarily for timber production. However, tortoise ecology on private, working forest landscapes remains poorly understood. To provide a better understanding of tortoise response to active forest management, I evaluated population demographics, movement ecology, and habitat selection of two tortoise populations: former Ben’s Creek Wildlife Management Area (BC) in Washington Parish, Louisiana and Perry County Gopher Tortoise Management Unit (PCGTMU) …
Easily Overlooked: Modelling Coastal Dune Habitat Occupancy Of Threatened And Endangered Beach Mice (Peromyscus Polionotus Spp.) Using High-Resolution Aerial Imagery And Elevation Models Of The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Wesley Burger
Theses and Dissertations
The Gulf of Mexico dune system is a broad and dynamic environment that varies greatly in geomorphology and vegetative composition across the Gulf coastline. Beach mice (Peromyscus polionotus spp.) are an endangered species that rely on coastal habitat structure. I hypothesized that beach mouse occupancy would be dependent upon coastal dune land cover and landform features. I identified coastal landforms using high-resolution elevation data and landform models in GRASS GIS and identified coastal dune vegetation classes using high-resolution aerial imagery and object oriented vegetation classification. These features were used to create a dynamic occupancy model to determine occupancy patterns in …

Effects Of Cover Crop Management On Biologically Related Soil Properties In A Mississippi Dryland Soybean System, Sapana Pokhrel
Theses and Dissertations
Soil microorganisms are important for the stabilization and preservation of a good soil structure. Management practices can affect the diversity and population of microorganisms, which could beneficially change soil properties and promote a more sustainable dryland system. This study was established near Pontotoc, MS on Atwood silt loam to evaluate the impacts of cover crops and fertilizer sources on selected biologically related soil properties in a no-tillage, dryland soybean system. Soil analyses included total carbon and nitrogen, permanganate oxidizable carbon (POXC), easily extractable glomalin-related soil protein (EE-GRSP), water stable aggregate (WSA) and soil pH. Cover crop biomass and percent groundcover, …
Effects Of Fire Phenology And Stump Sprouting On Summer Nutritional Carrying Capacity For White-Tailed Deer, Rainer Nichols
Effects Of Fire Phenology And Stump Sprouting On Summer Nutritional Carrying Capacity For White-Tailed Deer, Rainer Nichols
Theses and Dissertations
Prescribed fire is commonly used to manage white-tailed deer habitat. However, nutrition is still limited during the summer for deer in the Southeast and prescribed fire is commonly restricted to the dormant season. Knowledge of fire phenology effects on summer nutrient availability is relatively unknown. Stump sprouts may also affect available nutrition, which could be important when managing for summer nutrition. To address this summer nutritional stress period, I examined impacts prescribed fire phenology and mechanical stump sprouting had on summer nutritional carrying capacity for deer. Results indicated implementing prescribed fire in both dormant and growing-seasons led to increased summer …
Evaluation Of Bollworm Behavior, Damage, And Control In Cotton With Insecticidal Proteins And Formulated Insecticides, Russell Ethan Godbold
Evaluation Of Bollworm Behavior, Damage, And Control In Cotton With Insecticidal Proteins And Formulated Insecticides, Russell Ethan Godbold
Theses and Dissertations
The bollworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), is an economically important pest of cotton and is becoming more difficult to control in the United States. This project was designed to develop a better understanding of the effects of resistance development and plant structures on the efficacy of Bt cotton and foliar insecticides. Experiments examined larval behavior and damage in current cotton varieties expressing proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis. Other experiments examined the effects of floral structures on the control of bollworm using foliar insecticides. Results suggest that larval feeding and avoidance behavior is dependent on point of eclosion. Fruiting form damage increased in …
A Survey Of Neonicotinoid Residue Levels In Native Bees And Soil Of The Mississippi Black Belt Prairie, Sena Isbilir
A Survey Of Neonicotinoid Residue Levels In Native Bees And Soil Of The Mississippi Black Belt Prairie, Sena Isbilir
Theses and Dissertations
Reports of declining insect populations suggest that more research focusing on this phenomenon is needed, especially in pollinator insects. Climate change, habitat destruction, and usage of certain pesticides have all been implicated in insect decline. Neonicotinoid pesticides are highly toxic to bees, can have drastic sub-lethal effects on behavior, and are persistent in the environment; likewise, they have been implicated as a major factor affecting bee populations. However, there are limited studies on native bees regarding their interactions with neonicotinoids, even regarding simple questions such as exposure levels. In this study, we aimed to assess concentrations of common neonicotinoids in …
Adversity And Resilience Training: Trauma-Informed Care As A Universal Community Intervention, Lediya Dumessa
Adversity And Resilience Training: Trauma-Informed Care As A Universal Community Intervention, Lediya Dumessa
Theses and Dissertations
Growing evidence of the health risks associated with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) has prompted public health and community initiatives to promote awareness, detection, and responses that are trauma informed. Nationwide programs to integrate trauma-informed care into education, health care, and child serving agencies, have thus far led to the proposal and advancement of trauma-informed policies and practices in many communities. While Mississippi agencies include trauma-specific intervention and training, statewide ACEs initiatives and relevant data are still limited. This project aimed to contribute to the larger goal of a statewide trauma-informed paradigm shift, by increasing ACEs awareness and developing recommendations for …
Allelopathy In Weedy Rice As A Genetic Resource For Developing Competitive Rice Varieties, Brooklyn Christine Schumaker
Allelopathy In Weedy Rice As A Genetic Resource For Developing Competitive Rice Varieties, Brooklyn Christine Schumaker
Theses and Dissertations
Weedy rice is of the same species as cultivated rice, Oryza, and is a common rice weed exhibiting allopathic characteristics. Incorporation of allelopathic traits from weedy rice into cultivated rice may have a positive impact on rice yield. The overall objective of this study was to characterize weedy rice accessions based on the allelopathic potential to suppress barnyardgrass. These accessions, once discovered, may be used in identifying phenotypic traits and genes associated with their weed suppressive trait. Ten weedy rice accessions, and five rice cultivars (Rex, CL163,Rondo, PI312777, PI338046) were screened using a stair-step technique. The allelopathic potential was calculated …
Assisted Reproductive Technologies In Male Ambystoma Tigrinum With Application To Threatened Newt Species, Amanda Gillis
Assisted Reproductive Technologies In Male Ambystoma Tigrinum With Application To Threatened Newt Species, Amanda Gillis
Theses and Dissertations
The world is currently facing an amphibian extinction crisis and wild salamanders and newts (Order: Caudata) are the most disadvantaged with 52% of species threatened. Captive breeding programs are been established to act as assurance colonies, but they are overwhelmingly failing due to the lack of environmental cues to stimulate reproduction and other factors. Therefore, assisted reproductive technologies (ART) are being developed to overcome these barriers. This project expands upon the limited existing information on caudate ART through studies in the model species, Ambystoma tigrinum, for application to threatened species. Specific objectives included the characterization of motility longevity in artificially …
Biomechanical Comparison Of External Fixation And Double Plating For The Stabilization Of A Canine Cadaveric Supracondylar Humeral Fracture Gap Model, Sarah Castaldo
Theses and Dissertations
A 2 cm ostectomy was performed on 10 pairs of canine cadaveric humeri proximal to the supratrochlear foramen. Stabilization was with a double plate construct (DB-PLATE) (n=10) or external skeletal fixator with intramedullary pin tie-in configuration (ESF-IMP) (n=10). Cyclic testing was performed. Axial compressive load to failure testing followed. Data analyzed included dynamic stiffness, stiffness and yield load. No constructs failed during cyclic testing or lost stiffness over time, although mean dynamic stiffness was greater for DB-PLATE compared to ESF-IMP. Mean stiffness of DB-PLATE in load-toailure testing was not significantly different than ESF-IMP. Yield force of DB-PLATE was significantly higher …
Biomolecular Analysis Of An Insect Of Economic Importance, The Multicolored Asian Lady Beetle, Selene Perales Sanchez
Biomolecular Analysis Of An Insect Of Economic Importance, The Multicolored Asian Lady Beetle, Selene Perales Sanchez
Theses and Dissertations
Insect-human interactions are very complex; one example is the relationship between humans and the multicolored Asian lady beetle (ALB; Harmonia axyridis). ALB, a native to Asia, was introduced into North American agricultural fields and orchards as a biological control agent for aphids and other soft-bodied insects. However, it is considered a pest by some humans as it invades houses in the fall and winter months. Additionally, ALBs feed on fruits when aphids are scarce, and the hemolymph secreted by ALBs contaminates fruit and affects the taste of fruit products. ALBs invasive behavior has led to concern that this non-native species …
Brain And Hepatic Microsomal Metabolism Of Phorate, Marissa Lucento
Brain And Hepatic Microsomal Metabolism Of Phorate, Marissa Lucento
Theses and Dissertations
Phorate (O,O-diethyl S-ethylthiomethyl phosphorodithioate) is a toxic organophosphate anticholinesterase insecticide. Organophosphate insecticides can cause respiratory depression and seizures due to acetylcholinesterase inhibition. Inhibited acetylcholinesterase cannot break down the neurotransmitter, acetylcholine; thus, causing an overload of acetylcholine in synapses and neuromuscular junctions. Oxidative desulfuration, from metabolism by cytochrome P450 enzymes, converts the P=S phosphorothionate group on phorate to the P=O oxon group. Electrophilic oxon groups attack the active site on acetylcholinesterase, inducing the toxicity associated with organophosphate insecticides. Possible further bioactivation to phorate-oxon-sulfoxide and phorate-oxon-sulfone near the site of acetylcholinesterase in the brain may increase acetylcholinesterase inhibitory potency. Adult male Sprague-Dawley …

Struggling Adolescent Readers: A Case Study Of Teacher Beliefs And Practices Using The How People Learn Framework, Laura Katherine Thomas Hood
Theses and Dissertations
In this qualitative study, I explored teacher beliefs and practices about struggling adolescent readers. I chose to study 3 middle school 7th- and 8th-grade English teachers based on purposeful and convenience sampling through principal recommendation. My data consisted of interviews, observations, and documents to understand what teachers believe about struggling adolescent readers and what teachers of struggling middle school students do during instruction. I created the interviews and observation protocols and analyzed the data using the How People Learn Framework (Darling-Hammond & Bransford, 2005; National Research Council, 2000). Findings suggest (1) negative extrinsic motivation was used to boost student assessment …
Improved Monitoring And Decision-Making To Manage Atypical Aeromonas Hydrophila In Catfish Aquaculture Ponds, Bradley Richardson
Improved Monitoring And Decision-Making To Manage Atypical Aeromonas Hydrophila In Catfish Aquaculture Ponds, Bradley Richardson
Theses and Dissertations
Commercial catfish production is an inveterate industry within the southeastern United States. Bacterial disease is a significant detriment to global aquaculture, including the United States catfish industry. Among them, an atypical strain of the bacterium Aeromonas hydrophila has plagued the industry since the late 2000s. Atypical A. hydrophila (aAh) outbreaks are largely acute, resulting in catastrophic losses. The disease ecology, prevalence, and genetic distribution are poorly understood. Atypical Aeromonas hydrophila displays a rapid onset with few warning signs of the impending disease, making it difficult for early detection. At present there are two recognized haplotypes of aAh. This project aimed …

Innate And Adaptive Immune Responses Of Channel Catfish To Edwardsiella Ictaluri Wild Type And Live Attenuated Vaccine Candidates, Ozgur Erdogan
Theses and Dissertations
Edwardsiella ictaluri causes enteric septicemia of catfish (ESC), a devastating disease in the channel catfish industry. Our research group has developed several E. ictaluri live attenuated vaccine (LAV) candidates (EiΔevpB, EiΔevpBΔfur, EiΔevpBΔhfq, EiΔevpBΔfurΔhfq), which were able to stimulate an immune response in vaccinated channel catfish and reduce ESC. However, innate, and adaptive immune responses in the lymphoid tissues of channel catfish to these LAVs are not known well. The overall goal of the project is to determine the role of adaptive and innate immune responses in catfish after vaccination with LAVs. Analysis of innate and adaptive immune-related gene expressions showed …

Integrin-Linked Kinases Are Components Of A Cell Wall Integrity Signaling Pathway Required For Innate Immune Responses, Gizem Dimlioglu
Theses and Dissertations
Signaling networks have a crucial role in every aspect of plant communication with the environment. There is significant interest in identifying signal transduction pathways governing CW homeostasis in interactions with pathogens and symbionts. In previous work, our lab has demonstrated that the RAF-like Integrin-Linked Kinase 1 (ILK1) is a negative regulator of FLS2 (Flagellin Sensing2)-mediated signaling, required for defense against a low-virulence P. syringae T3SS-mutant, and modulating cellular ion homeostasis through functional interactions with Ca2+ sensor CML9 and HAK5 K+ transporter (Brauer et al., 2016). In this work we revealed that ILK1 homologs, ILK4 and ILK5, are required for plant …
