Higher Csf Strem2 And Microglia Activation Are Associated With Slower Rates Of Beta-Amyloid Accumulation, Michael Ewers, Laura Piccio, Carlos Cruchaga, Et Al
Open Access Publications
Microglia activation is the brain's major immune response to amyloid plaques in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Both cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of soluble TREM2 (sTREM2), a biomarker of microglia activation, and microglia PET are increased in AD; however, whether an increase in these biomarkers is associated with reduced amyloid-beta (Aβ) accumulation remains unclear. To address this question, we pursued a two-pronged translational approach. Firstly, in non-demented and demented individuals, we tested CSF sTREM2 at baseline to predict (i) amyloid PET changes over ∼2 years and (ii) tau PET cross-sectionally assessed in a subset of patients. We found higher CSF sTREM2 associated …

Scientometric Analysis: Identification Of Research Trends In The Field Of Herb Drug Interactions., Gurjot Kaur, Ajay Kumar Sharma
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Due to the advent of allopathy and concomitant usage of the medicinal drugs with herbal medicines, many herb drug interactions are increasingly reported in the scientific literature. In this study, we have collected the scientific literature in the field of herb drug interactions published between 2011 to 2019 and analyzed it for the scientometric trends to understand the research direction in the last decade. We analyzed for the most prolific authors and their affiliations, top ten countries, funding agencies that sponsored the most publications and journals with most articles published in the field of herb drug interactions. We also identified …

Mechanical And Non-Mechanical Functions Of Filamentous And Non-Filamentous Vimentin, Alison E. Patteson, Amir Vahabikashi, Robert D. Goldman, Paul A. Janmey
Physics - All Scholarship
Intermediate filaments (IFs) formed by vimentin are less understood than their cytoskeletal partners, microtubules and F-actin, but the unique physical properties of IFs, especially their resistance to large deformations, initially suggest a mechanical function. Indeed, vimentin IFs help regulate cell mechanics and contractility, and in crowded 3D environments they protect the nucleus during cell migration. Recently, a multitude of studies, often using genetic or proteomic screenings show that vimentin has many non-mechanical functions within and outside of cells. These include signaling roles in wound healing, lipogenesis, sterol processing, and various functions related to extracellular and cell surface vimentin. Extracellular vimentin …

(1) Objective: The World Health Organization's (WHO) International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) classification is a unified framework for the description of health and health-related states. This study aimed to use the ICF framework to classify outcome measures used in follow-up studies of coronavirus outbreaks and make recommendations for future studies. (2) Methods: EMBASE, MEDLINE, CINAHL and PsycINFO were systematically searched for original studies assessing clinical outcomes in adult survivors of severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (SARS), middle east respiratory syndrome (MERS) and coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) after hospital discharge. Individual items of the identified outcome measures were linked …

Open Access Resources: Option For Libraries In A Challenged Economy, Isaac E. Anyira, Imade Idubor
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Inadequacy of information resources has emerged as a major challenge facing libraries in Nigeria currently. The causes of this inadequacy include poor funding of libraries, high cost of materials, high exchange rate (as many library resources are imported) and global economic recession. The open access initiative presents the library with the solution to this challenge by providing access to high quality E-journals, E-books and other information bearing resource at minimal or no cost at all. This paper considered what constitutes open access resources, reasons why libraries should embrace them, their sources and web addresses, and the barriers to their integration …

There Is No Bournville In Africa: Chocolate Capitalist, African Cocoa Workers, And International Labor Relationships From The 19th Century To The Present, Ryan Minor
History in the Making
The issue of labor exploitation and the impact of neocolonialism, have in recent years, become extremely important as our global community continues to shrink. This paper focuses on the relationships between European chocolate manufactures and West African cocoa laborers from the 1870’s to the present day as a means of discussing the complex connections that have developed between industrial capitalism and labor in Africa. This study will address two key questions: One, if labor exploitation is necessary for industrial capitalists to maintain the high levels of profit they desire; and two, if the exploitation of labor becomes increasingly easier the …

Type II toxin-antitoxins systems are widespread in prokaryotic genomes. Typically, they comprise two proteins, a toxin, and an antitoxin, encoded by adjacent genes and forming a complex in which the enzymatic activity of the toxin is inhibited. Under stress conditions, the antitoxin is degraded liberating the active toxin. Though thousands of various toxin-antitoxins pairs have been predicted bioinformatically, only a handful has been thoroughly characterized. Here, we describe the AtaT2 toxin from a toxin-antitoxin system from Escherichia coli O157:H7. We show that AtaT2 is the first GNAT (Gcn5-related N-acetyltransferase) toxin that specifically targets charged glycyl tRNA. In vivo, the AtaT2 …
Estimating Partial Body Ionizing Radiation Exposure By Automated Cytogenetic Biodosimetry, Peter Rogan
Estimating Partial Body Ionizing Radiation Exposure By Automated Cytogenetic Biodosimetry, Peter Rogan
Biochemistry Publications
Purpose: Inhomogeneous exposures to ionizing radiation can be detected and quantified with the Dicentric Chromosome Assay (DCA) of metaphase cells. Complete automation of interpretation of the DCA for whole body irradiation has significantly improved throughput without compromising accuracy, however low levels of residual false positive dicentric chromosomes (DCs) have confounded its application for partial body exposure determination.
Materials and Methods: We describe a method of estimating and correcting for false positive DCs in digitally processed images of metaphase cells. Nearly all DCs detected in unirradiated calibration samples are introduced by digital image processing. DC frequencies of irradiated calibration …

Drought- Conditioning Of Quaking Aspen (Populus Tremuloides Michx.) Seedlings During Nursery Production Modifies Seedling Anatomy And Physiology, Joshua L. Sloan, Owen T. Burney, Jeremiah R. Pinto
Aspen Bibliography
In the western US, quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) regenerates primarily by root suckers after disturbances such as low to moderate severity fires. Planting aspen seedlings grown from seed may provide a mechanism to improve restoration success and genetic diversity on severely disturbed sites. However, few studies have examined the use of container-grown aspen seedlings for restoration purposes from both the outplanting and nursery production perspective. Thus, the purpose of this novel study was to examine how alterations in irrigation levels during nursery production across three seed sources would impact seedling performance attributes on harsh, dry outplanting sites. Irrigation …
Genocide And The Hispanic-American Dilemma, Eitan Ginzberg
Genocide And The Hispanic-American Dilemma, Eitan Ginzberg
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
The reasoning behind Hispanic-American colonization was that the indigenous people were rational vassals, who could be embraced by Christianity, and must, therefore, be protected and well-treated, though judiciously recruited to serve the interests of the Spanish Empire. Eyewitnesses and studies conducted on the Indian issue since the early sixteenth century found that the preservation-exploitation policy gradually became extremely destructive. Raphael Lemkin, in an unpublished study on Hispanic-American colonialism, was the first to call its damaging consequences genocide. The objective of this article is to explore the historical reliability of Lemkin’s controversial claim, and how it might tally with the Spanish …
