Modeling Permafrost Dynamics And Water Balance Of Arctic Watersheds In A Changing Climate, Matvey Vladimirovich Debolskiy Dec 2020

Modeling Permafrost Dynamics And Water Balance Of Arctic Watersheds In A Changing Climate, Matvey Vladimirovich Debolskiy

Geosciences

Changes in climate across the Arctic in recent decades and especially the increase of near-surface air temperature promote signicant changes in key natural components of the Arctic including permafrost (defined as soil experiencing subzero temperature for more than two consecutive years). Recent borehole observations exhibit signicant increase in ground temperatures below the depths of seasonal variations. Modeling studies on a global scale suggest a steady decrease in area underlain by near-surface permafrost in the northern hemisphere in recent decades. Global projections for the next century predict further permafrost degradation depending on the greenhouse gas concentration trajectory. Permafrost degradation is not …

Effects Of Sea Ice Seasonal Evolution And Oil Properties On Crude Oil Upward Migration Through Sea Ice, Marc Oggier Dec 2020

Effects Of Sea Ice Seasonal Evolution And Oil Properties On Crude Oil Upward Migration Through Sea Ice, Marc Oggier

Geosciences

Sea ice plays an essential role in polar ecosystems as a habitat for organisms at the base of the food web. Receding Arctic perennial sea ice, potential oil and gas reserves, and increasing industrial activities in the Arctic are likely to increase oil extraction and transport in the maritime Arctic. Despite a decrease in summer sea ice extent, Arctic waters remain covered with sea ice for much of the year, increasing the risk of an oil spill in and under Arctic sea ice. This dissertation addresses the need for a quantitative understanding of the timing of and constraints on oil …

Alaska Sea Energy: A Guide For Hydroponic Development, Daniel Blair-Madrid Dec 2020

Alaska Sea Energy: A Guide For Hydroponic Development, Daniel Blair-Madrid

Rural Development

This guide has been created to help those unfamiliar with the benefits of growing food with hydroponics to gain a deeper understanding of how such techniques can help rural communities with issues of food sovereignty and provide healthy fresh food through every season. It also includes input from communities participating in the project. Rural coastal communities in particular have a unique opportunity of combining both hydroponic techniques and ocean-based fertilization to maximize sustainable food production, thereby reducing reliance on imported food. The instructions contained within this guide will describe various types of hydroponic systems, recommendations for equipment, and how to …

A Bayesian Mixed Multistate Open-Robust Design Mark-Recapture Model To Estimate Heterogeneity In Transition Rates In An Imperfectly Detected System, Janelle J. Badger Dec 2020

A Bayesian Mixed Multistate Open-Robust Design Mark-Recapture Model To Estimate Heterogeneity In Transition Rates In An Imperfectly Detected System, Janelle J. Badger

Mathematics and Statistics

Multistate mark-recapture models have long been used to assess ecological and demographic parameters such as survival, phenology, and breeding rates by estimating transition rates among a series of latent or observable states. Here, we introduce a Bayesian mixed multistate open robust design mark recapture model (MSORD), with random intercepts and slopes to explore individual heterogeneity in transition rates and individual responses to covariates. We fit this model to simulated data sets to test whether the model could accurately and precisely estimate five parameters, set to known values a priori, under varying sampling schemes. To assess the behavior of the model …

The Reproductive Biology Of Yelloweye Rockfish (Sebastes Ruberrimus) In Prince William Sound And The Northern Gulf Of Alaska, Donald E. Arthur Dec 2020

The Reproductive Biology Of Yelloweye Rockfish (Sebastes Ruberrimus) In Prince William Sound And The Northern Gulf Of Alaska, Donald E. Arthur

Fisheries

Over the last half century, Yelloweye Rockfish Sebastes ruberrimus have experienced dramatic declines along the West Coast of the United States and British Columbia. Efforts have been made throughout the species' range to rebuild and sustainably manage stocks, including the introduction of a Statewide Rockfish Initiative by the State of Alaska, which intends to develop management strategies for Yelloweye Rockfish in the Gulf of Alaska. To support this effort and address information gaps in Yelloweye Rockfish reproductive biology throughout their range, I estimated important reproductive parameters and life history information for Yelloweye Rockfish in Prince William Sound and the Northern …

Spawning Migration Characteristics And Ecology Of Eulachon (Thaleichthys Pacificus), Robert E. Spangler Dec 2020

Spawning Migration Characteristics And Ecology Of Eulachon (Thaleichthys Pacificus), Robert E. Spangler

Fisheries

Eulachon Thaleichthys pacificus has experienced dramatic reductions in their distribution and abundance along the west coast of North America. This prompted the listing of this species as "Threatened" under the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA) of 1973 for populations found in the southern portions of their range, but not in Alaska. Key gaps in knowledge of Eulachon spawning ecology exist that impede population monitoring efforts and habitat protection. Currently, many monitoring efforts ignore estuaries as possible spawning habitat leading to inaccurate estimates of population abundance and trends. Furthermore, estuaries are not designated as critical spawning habitat for Eulachon. This is …

Sea Otter Diet Composition With Respect To Recolonization, Life History, And Season In Southern Southeast Alaska, Nicole Laroche Dec 2020

Sea Otter Diet Composition With Respect To Recolonization, Life History, And Season In Southern Southeast Alaska, Nicole Laroche

Fisheries

Until translocation efforts in the 1960s, sea otters (Enhydra lutris) were absent from Southeast Alaska due to extirpation by the fur trade in the 18th and 19th centuries. About 400 sea otters were reintroduced to six Southeast Alaska locations, including two sites near Prince of Wales Island in southern Southeast Alaska. The most recent US Fish and Wildlife Service population count, completed in 2012, estimated that about 25,000 sea otters inhabited Southeast Alaska. Sea otters will reduce invertebrate prey biomass when recolonizing an area. By quantifying sea otter diets and caloric intake according to recolonization patterns, we can better understand …

Zooplankton Community Composition In Relation To Environment And Juvenile Salmon Diets In Icy Strait, Southeast Alaska, Emily A. Fergusson Dec 2020

Zooplankton Community Composition In Relation To Environment And Juvenile Salmon Diets In Icy Strait, Southeast Alaska, Emily A. Fergusson

Fisheries

Zooplankton in the nearshore marine habitat function as an important prey resource for many pelagic fishes, are a major component of the lower tropic level, and serve as a vital ecosystem indicator. Understanding how the zooplankton community changes in response to fluctuations in biophysical factors is critical in a changing climate and is important to understanding the dynamics of commercially important upper-trophic level species that depend nutritionally on zooplankton. The Alaska Fisheries Science Center's Southeast Coastal Monitoring project has surveyed the pelagic ecosystem in eastern Icy Strait monthly from May to August since 1997 to understand how environmental variation affects …

Reproduction And Stress Response Endocrinology In Blue (Balaenoptera Musculus) And Gray (Eschrichtius Robustus) Whales, Valentina Melica Dec 2020

Reproduction And Stress Response Endocrinology In Blue (Balaenoptera Musculus) And Gray (Eschrichtius Robustus) Whales, Valentina Melica

Fisheries

Identification of biomarkers that reflect physiological status is fundamental for assessing population health, as well as providing more accurate estimates of life history parameters. Blue (Balaenoptera musculus) and gray (Eschrichtius robustus) whale populations feed on lower trophic levels and migrate between the eastern Tropical and the eastern North Pacific Ocean. With increasing disturbances (e.g., changing environment and human activities), understanding the stress response, resultant coping mechanisms, and the subsequent effects on reproduction, is of growing importance. While extensive knowledge is available on photo-identification and ecology of these two species, information on physiology is limited and what exists is outdated. This …

Tracing Carbon Sources Of Southern Beaufort Sea And Chukchi Sea Polar Bears Using Stable Isotope Analyses, Malia E.K. Smith Dec 2020

Tracing Carbon Sources Of Southern Beaufort Sea And Chukchi Sea Polar Bears Using Stable Isotope Analyses, Malia E.K. Smith

Marine Biology

The Southern Beaufort Sea (SBS) polar bear (Ursus maritimus) subpopulation has declined in response to sea ice loss, while the Chukchi Sea (CS) subpopulation appears stable. The substantial population decline in the SBS subpopulation in recent years is concurrent with increases in the proportion of polar bears coming on shore, and the duration they spend there. Both of these changes have been associated with the loss of access to their primary sea ice habitat, which is mainly used as a platform to hunt seals. The first objective of this study was to determine if the SBS and CS polar bear …

Experimental Manipulations To Test Theory-Driven Mechanisms Of Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Matthew W. Southward, Shannon Sauer-Zavala

Psychology Faculty Publications

Despite decades of randomized-controlled trials demonstrating the efficacy of cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT), the mechanisms by which CBT achieves its effects remain unclear. Here, we describe how one adaptive intervention, the sequential multiple assignment randomized trial (SMART), can be used to randomize patients at multiple decision points in treatment to draw stronger causal claims about mechanisms unfolding in the course of CBT. We illustrate this design using preliminary data and case examples from an ongoing SMART in which we are testing the role of aversive reactions to negative emotions as a hypothesized mechanism of change in the Unified Protocol. Finally, we …

Native And Non-Native Sources Of Carbohydrate Correlate With Abundance Of An Invasive Ant, Lori Lach, Benjamin Hoffmann, Melinda L. Moir Dec 2020

Native And Non-Native Sources Of Carbohydrate Correlate With Abundance Of An Invasive Ant, Lori Lach, Benjamin Hoffmann, Melinda L. Moir

Biosecurity Research Articles

Invasive species threaten many ecological communities and predicting which communities and sites are invasible remains a key goal of invasion ecology. Although invasive ants often reach high abundances in association with plant-based carbohydrate resources, the source and provenance of these resources are rarely investigated. We characterized carbohydrate resources across ten sites with a range of yellow crazy ant abundance in Arnhem Land, Australia and New Caledonia to determine whether yellow crazy ant (Anoplolepis gracilipes) abundance and trophic position correlate with carbohydrate availability, as well as the relative importance of native and non-native sources of carbohydrates to ant diet. …

Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications

The subsocial life style and wood-feeding capability of Cryptocercus gives us an evolutionary key to unlock some outstanding questions in biology. With the advent of the Genomics Era, there is an unprecedented opportunity to address the evolution of eusociality and the acquisition of lignocellulases at the genetic level. However, to quantify gene expression, an appropriate normalization strategy is warranted to control for the non-specific variations among samples across different experimental conditions. To search for the internal references, 10 housekeeping genes from a gut transcriptome of a wood-feeding cockroach, Cryptocercus punctulatus, were selected as the candidates for the RT-qPCR analysis. The …

Effects Of Urbanization On Buff-Bellied Hummingbirds In Subtropical South Texas, John S. Brush, Timothy Brush, Alexis Racelis

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Urbanization and its associated processes affect wildlife in a variety of ways. Understanding how this increasing land use type affects biological communities is important for conservation efforts. Hummingbirds (family Trochilidae) are one taxon that has showed positive responses to varying intensities of urban development. We surveyed for Buff-bellied Hummingbird (Amazilia yucatanensis), a species on its northern range-limits, in urban woodlands, residential, natural, and revegetated habitats. We examined how urbanization is affecting Buff-bellied Hummingbird populations in South Texas with point-count surveys and GIS analysis. We found that Buff-bellied Hummingbirds had greater relative abundances in urban settings when compared with …

Infection-Induced 5'-Half Molecules Of Trnahisgug Activate Toll-Like Receptor 7., Kamlesh Pawar, Megumi Shigematsu, Soroush Sharbati, Yohei Kirino

Computational Medicine Center Faculty Papers

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) play a crucial role in the innate immune response. Although endosomal TLR7 recognizes single-stranded RNAs, their endogenous RNA ligands have not been fully explored. Here, we report 5'-tRNA half molecules as abundant activators of TLR7. Mycobacterial infection and accompanying surface TLR activation up-regulate the expression of 5'-tRNA half molecules in human monocyte-derived macrophages (HMDMs). The abundant accumulation of 5'-tRNA halves also occur in HMDM-secreted extracellular vehicles (EVs); the abundance of EV-5'-tRNAHisGUG half molecules is >200-fold higher than that of the most abundant EV-microRNA (miRNA). Sequence identification of the 5'-tRNA halves using cP-RNA-seq revealed abundant and selective packaging …

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

There are currently no pharmacological approaches in fracture healing designed to therapeutically stimulate endochondral ossification. In this study, we test nerve growth factor (NGF) as an understudied therapeutic for fracture repair. We first characterized endogenous expression of Ngf and its receptor tropomyosin receptor kinase A (TrkA) during tibial fracture repair, finding that they peak during the cartilaginous phase. We then tested two injection regimens and found that local β-NGF injections during the endochondral/cartilaginous phase promoted osteogenic marker expression. Gene expression data from β-NGF stimulated cartilage callus explants show a promotion in markers associated with endochondral ossification such as Ihh, Alpl, …

Efficient Alternative Food Systems For Earth And Space, Kyle A. Alvarado Dec 2020

Efficient Alternative Food Systems For Earth And Space, Kyle A. Alvarado

Engineering

Alternative foods are a source of human-edible calories derived from an unconventional source or process. This thesis includes two alternative foods: (i) crops grown under low-tech greenhouses in low sunlight environments and (ii) hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria (HOB) in space and Earth refuges, such as to repopulate the Earth. The purpose of alternative foods is to ensure food security for human survival. During a global catastrophic risk (GCR) scenario, such as nuclear winter or super volcanic eruption, the sun may be obscured, causing lack of crop production and therefore global food shortages. The purpose of this thesis was to improve the cost …
