© Inter-Research 2020. Freshwater input into nearshore continental shelf waters from coastal river-estuarine plumes can greatly alter the physical and trophic environments experienced by fish larvae. However, the biological consequences of plume encounter on larval fish survival remain equivocal, largely due to the extreme variability of these systems but also because traditional sampling techniques alone are too coarse to effectively characterize the dynamic biophysical environment at spatiotemporal scales relevant to individual larvae. Using a multidimensional approach, we simultaneously collected in situ imagery and net samples of larval fishes and zooplankton from the Mobile Bay plume (Alabama, USA) and ambient continental …

School of Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Ionic hydrogels are an abundant class of materials with applications ranging from drug delivery devices to high performance concrete to baby diapers. A more thorough understanding of interactions between poly electrolyte networks and ionic solutes is critical as these materials are further tailored for performance applications in highly targeted ionic environments. In this work, we seek to develop structure-property relationships between polyelectrolyte gels and environments containing high concentrations of multivalent ions. Specifically, this work seeks to elucidate the causes behind differences in hydrogel response to divalent ions of main group metals versus transition metals. PANa-co-PAM hydrogels containing low and high …

High pressure can drastically alter chemical bonding and produce exotic compounds that defy conventional wisdom. Especially significant are compounds pertaining to oxygen cycles inside Earth, which hold key to understanding major geological events that impact the environment essential to life on Earth. Here we report the discovery of pressure-stabilized divalent ozonide CaO3 crystal that exhibits intriguing bonding and oxidation states with profound geological implications. Our computational study identifies a crystalline phase of CaO3 by reaction of CaO and O2 at high pressure and high temperature conditions; ensuing experiments synthesize this rare compound under compression in a diamond anvil cell with …

Department of Radiology Faculty Papers

The 2019 novel coronavirus, known as COVID-19, has greatly affected the way sonographers care for their patients. Sonography can be a useful imaging tool for surveillance and diagnosis of various conditions associated with COVID-19 patients or patients under investigation (PUIs). Currently, there are limited resources and protocols for preventing the transmission of COVID-19 from ultrasound equipment. Our institution has created a detailed protocol for scanning COVID-19 patients or PUIs to address this important issue.

ETV6 is an ETS family transcription factor that plays a key role in hematopoiesis and megakaryocyte development. Our group and others have identified germline mutations in ETV6 resulting in autosomal dominant thrombocytopenia and predisposition to malignancy; however, molecular mechanisms defining the role of ETV6 in megakaryocyte development have not been well established. Using a combination of molecular, biochemical, and sequencing approaches in patient-derived PBMCs, we demonstrate abnormal cytoplasmic localization of ETV6 and the HDAC3/NCOR2 repressor complex that led to overexpression of HDAC3-regulated interferon response genes. This transcriptional dysregulation was also reflected in patient-derived platelet transcripts and drove aberrant proplatelet formation …

Conceptualizing The Effects Of Continuous Traumatic Violence On Hiv Continuum Of Care Outcomes For Young Black Men Who Have Sex With Men In The United States, Dexter R. Voisin Sep 2020

Conceptualizing The Effects Of Continuous Traumatic Violence On Hiv Continuum Of Care Outcomes For Young Black Men Who Have Sex With Men In The United States, Dexter R. Voisin

Faculty Scholarship

The United States (US) is on track to achieve the 90-90-90 targets set forth by UNAIDS and the National HIV/AIDS strategy, yet significant racial disparities in HIV care outcomes remain, particularly for young Black men who have sex with men (YBMSM). Research has demonstrated that various types of violence are key aspects of syndemics that contribute to disparities in HIV risk. However, little research has looked collectively at cumulative violent experiences and how those might affect HIV treatment and care outcomes. Drawing on extant literature and theoretical underpinnings of syndemics, we provide a conceptual model that highlights how continuous traumatic …

Can Model Structure Families Be Inferred From Model Output?, Janneke Remmers

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This study explores the compatibility of two approaches for hydrological model structure uncertainty assessment: modular modelling frame-works, and model ensemble runs. We created dendrograms, a method that stems from biology to determine family trees, based on both model structure and model output. We analysed how well model structure families could be inferred from signatures in model output over different climates, and as such, if model structure uncertainty can correctly be quantified based on model output. Results from a synthetic experiment over 671 climate in-stances showed that the performance of the inference depends on the type of signature evaluated, and the …

Fall Detection: Threshold Analysis Of Wrist-Worn Motion Sensor Signals, Michael J. Wolfe, Jospeh Caguioa, Andy Nguyen, Jacquelyn Cheun Phd

SMU Data Science Review

In this paper, we present a detection algorithm that accurately differentiates the event of a person falling from normal Activities of Daily Living (ADL). Our algorithm processes signals recorded from accelerometers and gyroscopes built into wearable activity monitoring devices such as smart watches that are worn on an individual’s wrist. Existing algorithms are accurate but imprecise, and rely too much on inconveniently-placed sensors. We propose a pipeline that improves precision without sacrificing accuracy and ease of use. We present the use of a combination of threshold-based and machine learning-based approaches to develop a refined fall-detection algorithm that builds upon previous …

Floor Regularization And Investigation Of Transfer Learning Through Sharing Of Probability Distribution Parameters, Daniel Byrne, Stacey Smith, Joanna Duran, John Santerre Sep 2020

Floor Regularization And Investigation Of Transfer Learning Through Sharing Of Probability Distribution Parameters, Daniel Byrne, Stacey Smith, Joanna Duran, John Santerre

SMU Data Science Review

In this work we introduce a simple new regularization technique, aptly named Floor, which drops low weight connections on every forward pass whenever they fall below a specified event horizon threshold. We compare the results of this technique side by side on identical network architectures between regular Dropout and Floor algorithms. We report similar or improved regularization, with the Floor algorithm versus regular Dropout and/or in concert with regular Dropout.

In this paper we also describe our research into transfer learning by sharing of probability distribution parameters in which we investigated methods of transferring Gaussian prior parameters derived from the …

Participatory Modelling For Planning And Decision-Making: Report From Case Study Review, Beatrice Hedelin Sep 2020

Participatory Modelling For Planning And Decision-Making: Report From Case Study Review, Beatrice Hedelin

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Participatory modelling (PM) has far-reaching potential to support the governance of complex socio-environmental systems. Although many PM case studies have been published, there is a lack of classification and characterization of the studies in their ensemble. To progress the systematic and theory-based development of PM and its applications with respect to participatory planning and decision-making, we have reviewed the field with a focus on planning and procedural issues. To do this, a random sample (n=60) of PM case articles is drawn from a larger pool of compiled PM articles that itself represented a nearly complete set of peer reviewed PM …

Exploring Land Based Benefits Of The Circular Economy, Martin Jancovic

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Current trends in biodiversity and habitat loss result in economic losses through the loss of ecosystem services, reduced food security due to an increased vulnerability to diseases, and loss of livelihoods. The transition of linear production chains in those parts of the economy that use renewable biological resources from the land and sea, to a more resource efficient and sustainable economy, will keep products and materials longer in use by human society and allow natural systems to regenerate. These biological resources include agricultural crops, and wood from forests to produce food, materials and energy. To ex-ante explore the impact of …

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Long-term exposure to ambient air pollutant concentrations is known to cause chronic lung inflammation, a condition that may promote increased severity of COVID-19 syndrome caused by the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). In this paper, we empirically investigate the ecologic association between long-term concentrations of area-level fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and excess deaths in the first quarter of 2020 in municipalities of Northern Italy. The study accounts for potentially spatial confounding factors related to urbanization that may have influenced the spreading of SARS-CoV-2 and related COVID-19 mortality. Our epidemiological analysis uses geographical information (e.g., municipalities) and negative binomial regression to assess whether …

Epoxidation Of Cardanol's Terminal Double Bond., Emre Kinaci, Erde Can, John J La Scala, Giuseppe R Palmese

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

In this investigation, the terminal double bonds of the side chain epoxidized cardanol glycidyl ether (SCECGE) molecule were further epoxidized in the presence of Oxone® (potassium peroxomonosulfate) and fluorinated acetone. Regular methods for the double bond epoxidation are not effective on the terminal double bonds because of their reduced electronegativity with respect to internal double bonds. The terminal double bond functionality of the SCECGE was epoxidized to nearly 70%, increasing the epoxy functionality of SCECGE from 2.45 to 2.65 epoxies/molecule as measured using proton magnetic nuclear resonance (1H-NMR). This modified material—side chain epoxidized cardanol glycidyl ether with terminal epoxies (TE-SCECGE)—was …
