Patterns Of Intraspecific Trait Variation Along An Aridity Gradient Suggest Both Drought Escape And Drought Tolerance Strategies In An Invasive Herb, Shana R. Welles, Jennifer L. Funk Sep 2020

Patterns Of Intraspecific Trait Variation Along An Aridity Gradient Suggest Both Drought Escape And Drought Tolerance Strategies In An Invasive Herb, Shana R. Welles, Jennifer L. Funk

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Background and Aims

In water limited landscapes, some plants build structures that enable them to survive with minimal water (drought resistance). Instead of making structures that allow for survival through times of water limitation, annual plants may invoke a drought escape strategy where they complete growth and reproduction when water is available. Drought escape and resistance each require a unique combination of traits and, therefore, plants are likely to have a suite of trait values that are consistent with a single drought response strategy. In environments where conditions are variable, plants may additionally evolve phenotypically plastic trait responses to water …

Development Of Ultrasonic-Based Ambient Desorption Ionization Mass Spectrometry, Linxia Song Sep 2020

Development Of Ultrasonic-Based Ambient Desorption Ionization Mass Spectrometry, Linxia Song

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Ambient desorption/ionization techniques (ADI) have drawn significant attention in mass spectrometric instrumentation development. The analyte classes that are successfully studied by any ADI mass spectrometry (MS) method strongly depends on how gas-phase ions are generated. Spray-based techniques may ionize molecules across a wide range of mass-to-charge ratios, but are commonly used for polar analyte, however, suffers from severe matrix effect. Contrastingly, methods employing electric (or laser) plasmas are capable of ionization of polar and nonpolar analytes suffering from less matrix effect, but primarily targeting those with low molecular masses. Thus far, developments of universal ionization methods, which do not depend …

A primary reason for the intense interest in structural biology is the fact that knowledge of structure can elucidate macromolecular functions in living organisms. Sustained effort has resulted in an impressive arsenal of tools for determining the static structures. But under physiological conditions, macromolecules undergo continuous conformational changes, a subset of which are functionally important. Techniques for capturing the continuous conformational changes underlying function are essential for further progress. Here, we present chemically-detailed conformational movies of biological function, extracted data-analytically from experimental single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) snapshots of ryanodine receptor type 1 (RyR1), a calcium-activated calcium channel engaged in the …

Cilia assembly is under strict transcriptional control during animal development. In vertebrates, a hierarchy of transcription factors (TFs) are involved in controlling the specification, differentiation and function of multiciliated epithelia. RFX TFs play key functions in the control of ciliogenesis in animals. Whereas only one RFX factor regulates ciliogenesis in C. elegans, several distinct RFX factors have been implicated in this process in vertebrates. However, a clear understanding of the specific and redundant functions of different RFX factors in ciliated cells remains lacking. Using RNA-seq and ChIP-seq approaches we identified genes regulated directly and indirectly by RFX1, RFX2 and RFX3 …

Eeg Classification Based On Multi-Domain Features And Random Subspace Ensemble, Deng Xin, Can Long, Jianxun Mi, Boxian Zhang, Kaiwei Sun, Wang Jin

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Aiming at the preprocessing feature extraction and classification recognition in BCI system, a method for EEG classification of motion imagery based on random subspaces ensemble learning of multi-domain features is proposed. Based on the analysis on the ERD/ERS characteristics of motion imagery (MI) signals, the multi-domain features of best effective time and frequency bands are extracted as the feature vectors, and the scale of the random subspace ensemble with cross-validation is adaptively chosen, and the EEG classification is realized by using linear discriminant analysis (LDA) classifiers ensemble. The test results show that the accuracy of the multi-domain features and …

Finite Element Method Evaluation On Chest Blunt Injury By Rubber Projectile, Wang Song, Renjun Zhan, Xiongyi Duan

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In order to reveal the non-lethal injury mechanism of rubber projectile and improve its safety service level, the 18.4 mm rubber projectile finite element model and the improved chest blunt injury assessment model are constructed and verified. The virtual impact test experiments under different loads are carried out, and the stress-time response and deformation-time response data are obtained. The results show that the time to reach the peak stress (less than 0.2 ms) is much shorter than the time to reach the maximum deformation variable (4~5 ms), which means the damage is not caused by the impact itself …

The essential G1-cyclin, CCND1, is a collaborative nuclear oncogene that is frequently overexpressed in cancer. D-type cyclins bind and activate CDK4 and CDK6 thereby contributing to G1-S cell-cycle progression. In addition to the nucleus, herein cyclin D1 was also located in the cytoplasmic membrane. In contrast with the nuclear-localized form of cyclin D1 (cyclin D1NL), the cytoplasmic membrane-localized form of cyclin D1 (cyclin D1MEM) induced transwell migration and the velocity of cellular migration. The cyclin D1MEM was sufficient to induce G1-S cell-cycle progression, cellular proliferation, and colony formation. The cyclin D1MEM was sufficient to induce phosphorylation of the serine threonine …

Assessing A Cognitive Model Of Trauma-Related Sleep Disturbance, Rebecca Chesher Sep 2020

Assessing A Cognitive Model Of Trauma-Related Sleep Disturbance, Rebecca Chesher

Dissertations

Sleep disturbance is a symptom of many mental health disorders that may negatively affect cognition and mood. Trauma-related sleep disturbance is a core reaction of traumatic stress and PTSD, similar to symptoms experienced by individuals with insomnia or other sleep-wake disorders. Although the cause and symptom progression of trauma-related sleep disturbance may be very different, research and clinical practice assess and treat it with measures and interventions designed for general insomnia. Using a cognitive model of insomnia modified for trauma-related sleep disturbance, the current study assessed the relations between select trauma and sleep variables within the proposed constructs of: 1) …

Caja De Fractales (2017), Una Propuesta De Humanismo AntropocéNico En Tiempo De Ecocidio., Miguel Angel Albújar-Escuredo

Alambique. Revista académica de ciencia ficción y fantasía / Jornal acadêmico de ficção científica e fantasía

This paper analyzes the novel Caja de fractales (2017) by Puerto Rican writer Luis Othoniel Rosa, which portrays an original proposal of the humanist artist’s role in a time of ecocide. The novel belongs by its own right to the Climate Fiction subgenre. It proposes that we should evolve towards a more humane and less harmful humanity thanks to a recycled mentality, which could adapt and consequently make us survive our anthropocenic era. This essay also argues the importance of the novel in the current literary scene; it points out the author’s interpretation of what humanism is confronting the risk …

Insomnia Is Associated With Frequency Of Suicidal Ideation Independent Of Depression: A Replication And Extension Of Findings From The National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey, Zach Simmons, Lance D. Erickson, Dawson Hedges, Daniel Kay

Faculty Publications

Objective: Insomnia is associated with suicidality, although the mechanisms of this association are unclear. This study sought to replicate previous findings showing that insomnia symptoms but not sleep duration are associated with frequency of suicidal ideation in adults. We further investigated whether depression or sleep duration moderates the association between insomnia symptoms and frequency of suicidal ideation.

Materials and Methods: We used the 2005–2006 cycle of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to replicate previously reported findings from the 2007–2008 cycle. We used ordered logistic regression to determine whether insomnia symptoms were associated with frequency of suicidal ideation independently …

Intratumoral Translocation Positive Heterogeneity In Pediatric Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma Tumors Correlates To Patient Survival Prognosis, Katrina Gleditsch, Jorge Peñas, Danielle Mercer, Ayesha Umrigar, James Briscoe, Matthew Stark, Fern Tsien, Andrew D. Hollenbach

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma (ARMS) is characterized by one of three translocation states: t(2;13) (q35;q14) producing PAX3-FOXO1, t(1;13) (p36;q14) producing PAX7-FOXO1, or translocation-negative. Tumors with t(2;13) are associated with greater disease severity and mortality than t(1;13) positive or translocation negative patients. Consistent with this fact, previous work concluded that a molecular analysis of RMS translocation status is essential for the accurate determination of prognosis and diagnosis. However, despite this knowledge, most diagnoses rely on histology and in some cases utilize fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) probes unable to differentiate between translocation products. Along these same lines, diagnostic RT-PCR analysis, which can differentiate …

Removal Of Pb2+ And Cd2+ From Aqueous Solutions Using Pocl3 Cross-Linked Carboxymethyl Derivatives Of Legume Starch, Ayodele Akinterinwa, Ebun Oladele, Albert Adebayo, Olubode Ajayi

Makara Journal of Science

Starch was extracted from Kwakil beans and cross-linked with POCl3 (1% v/w of starch dry basis [db]). The cross-linked starch (PCS) derivative was carboxymethylated with sodium monochloroacetate (5% to 30% w/w of starch db) to obtain cross-linked carboxymethyl starch (PCCS) derivatives. The derivatives were used in the adsorption of Pb2+ and Cd2+, and the process was monitored using atomic adsorption spectrometer. Carboxymethylation enhanced adsorption of ions (Cd2+, 95% to 96%; Pb, 65% to 94%), and it was more appreciable with Pb2+ than Cd2+ as degree of substitution increased from 0.008 to 0.052. …

Role Of Farmer Knowledge In Agroecosystem Science: Rice Farming And Amphibians In The Philippines, Catherine R. Propper, Lisa J. Hardy, Brittni D. Howard, Rica Joy B. Flor, Grant R. Singleton

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Rice (Oryza sativa) agriculture provides food and economic security for nearly half of the world’s population. Rice agriculture is intensive in both land and agrochemical use. However, rice fields also provide aquatic resources for wildlife, including amphibians. In turn, some species may provide ecosystem services back to the farmers working in the rice agroecosystem. The foundation for understanding the complexity of agroecosystem–human relationships requires garnering information regarding human perceptions and knowledge of the role of biodiversity in these rice agroecosystems. Understanding farmer knowledge and perceptions of the ecosystem services provided by wildlife in their fields, along with their …

The siderophore biosynthetic enzyme A (SidA) ornithine hydroxylase from Aspergillus fumigatus is a fungal disease drug target involved in the production of hydroxamate-containing siderophores, which are used by the pathogen to sequester iron. SidA is an N-monooxygenase that catalyzes the NADPH-dependent hydroxylation of L-ornithine through a multistep oxidative mechanism, utilizing a C4a-hydroperoxyflavin intermediate. Here we present four new crystal structures of SidA in various redox and ligation states, including the first structure of oxidized SidA without NADP(H) or L-ornithine bound (resting state). The resting state structure reveals a new out active site conformation characterized by large rotations of the FAD …

Resource Use By American Black Bears In Suburbia: A Landholder Step Selection Approach, Farshid S. Ahrestani, Mark A. Ternent, Matthew J. Lovallo, W. David Walter

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Range expansion of American black bears (Ursus americanus; bear) and residential development have increased the bear presence in suburbia. Suburban landscapes exhibiting patchworks of variable-sized parcels and habitats and owned by landowners with diverse values can create large areas of suitable habitats with limited public access. These landscapes may limit the effectiveness of hunting as a traditional bear population management tool. Managers require better information regarding landowner attitudes about hunting before implementing harvest regulations intended to mitigate conflicts in suburban areas. To address this need, in 2013, we surveyed landowners to identify properties that allowed bear hunting in 3 …
