Post-Conviction Dna Testing In Death Row: A Constitutional Argument Under The Due Process Framework, Chi-Hsin Esther Engehart Oct 2020

Post-Conviction Dna Testing In Death Row: A Constitutional Argument Under The Due Process Framework, Chi-Hsin Esther Engehart

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that post-conviction DNA testing in death row cases should be recognized as a constitutional right under the procedural due process framework of the Fourteenth Amendment. It contends that the current reliance on the Eighth Amendment, which focuses on the morality and arbitrariness of the death penalty, fails to adequately address the critical issue of conviction accuracy. By applying the Mathews v. Eldridge balancing test, the note proposes that death row inmates should have a procedural due process right to DNA testing to ensure the accuracy of their convictions before execution.

Climbing beans play a central role in food security of rural households in the densely populated highlands of East and Central Africa. Soil fertility degradation and the lack of nutrient inputsare major limitations to yield of beans and other crops. We conducted field trials in Northern Rwanda in Kinoni and Muko villages to evaluate the effect of mineral N, P, and K fertilizers (both alone and in combination) and farmyard manure on nitrogen fixation and grain yields of climbing bean insmallholder farmers' fields. The trials were laid down in a randomized complete block design with seven replicate blocks in each …

Borrelia burgdorferi, the Lyme disease pathogen causes persistent infection by evading the host immune response. Differential expression of the surface-exposed lipoprotein VlsE that undergoes antigenic variation is a key immune evasion strategy employed by B. burgdorferi. Most studies focused on the mechanism of VlsE antigen variation, but little is known about VlsE regulation and factor(s) that regulates differential vlsE expression. In this study, we investigated BB0025, a putative YebC family transcriptional regulator (and hence designated BB0025 as YebC of B. burgdorferi herein). We constructed yebC mutant and complemented strain in an infectious strain of B. burgdorferi. The yebC mutant could …

Quantifying variability in the ocean carbon sink remains problematic due to sparse observations and spatiotemporal variability in surface ocean pCO2. To address this challenge, we have updated and improved ECCO-Darwin, a global ocean biogeochemistry model that assimilates both physical and biogeochemical observations. The model consists of an adjoint-based ocean circulation estimate from the Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean (ECCO) consortium and an ecosystem model developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Darwin Project. In addition to the data-constrained ECCO physics, a Green's function approach is used to optimize the biogeochemistry by adjusting initial conditions and six biogeochemical …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background

The production of methane by methanogens is dependent on numerous iron-sulfur (Fe-S) cluster proteins; yet, the machinery involved in Fe-S cluster biogenesis in methanogens remains largely unknown. Methanogen genomes encode uncharacterized homologs of the core components of the ISC (IscS and IscU) and SUF (SufBC) Fe-S cluster biogenesis systems found in bacteria and eukaryotes. Methanosarcina acetivorans contains three iscSU and two sufCB gene clusters. Here, we report genetic and biochemical characterization of M. acetivorans iscSU2.

Results

Purified IscS2 exhibited pyridoxal 5′- phosphate-dependent release of sulfur from L-cysteine. Incubation of purified IscU2 with IscS2, cysteine, and iron (Fe2+) resulted …

Racial/Ethnic Identity Modeling: An Exploration Of The Effects Of Bilingualism On Racial/Ethnic Identity Expression And Self-Esteem In Multiple-Race Black/African American Adults, Tritia Miyako Finley

Dissertations

The psychological well-being and racial/ethnic identity expression of bilingual multiple-race individuals mixed with Black/African American and another minority racial/ethnic category are largely underrepresented topics in current scholarly literature despite their growing population in the United States. In the current study, the sociohistorical and political processes of colonialism and coloniality were discussed to provide context for the critical examination of familial foreign language ability (FLA), self-esteem (SE), and Black/African American racial/ethnic identity (BRI) expression among multiple-race Black/African American adults (N = 204). Using structural equation modeling, results indicated that higher levels of FLA were related to higher levels of SE. …

As critical regulators of brain homeostasis, microglia are influenced by numerous factors, including sex and genetic mutations. To study the impact of these factors on microglia biology, we employed genetically engineered mice that model Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), a disorder characterized by clinically relevant sexually dimorphic differences. While microglia phagocytic activity was reduced in both male and female heterozygous Nf1 mutant (Nf1+/-) mice, purinergic control of phagocytosis was only affected in male Nf1+/- mice. ATP-induced P2Y-mediated membrane currents and P2RY12-dependent laser lesion-induced accumulation of microglial processes were also only impaired in male, but not female Nf1+/-, microglia. These defects resulted …

Identifying Seasonal And Daily Variations In Arg-Containing Bioaerosols Generated During The Wastewater Treatment Process, Mirza Isanovic Oct 2020

Identifying Seasonal And Daily Variations In Arg-Containing Bioaerosols Generated During The Wastewater Treatment Process, Mirza Isanovic

Theses and Dissertations

Antibiotic resistance is a growing problem with the current global death count topping 700,000. In the United States alone there are 2.8 million antibiotic resistant bacterial (ARB) infections each year and approximately 35,000 deaths. If current trends continue the global ARB death count will reach 10 million surpassing current chronic disease deaths. Wastewater treatment plants play a vital role in protecting both the environment as well as local communities. The WWTP process allows for the removal of chemicals and contaminants from water that eventually makes its way back into the environment as well as into drinking water plants. Despite the …

The Effects Of Super-Resolution Microscopy On Colocalization Conclusions Previously Made With Diffraction-Limited Systems In The Biomedical Sciences, Madison Emily Yemc Oct 2020

The Effects Of Super-Resolution Microscopy On Colocalization Conclusions Previously Made With Diffraction-Limited Systems In The Biomedical Sciences, Madison Emily Yemc

Theses and Dissertations

Super-resolution microscopy, also known as nanoscopy, is now established in the field of microscopy. The evolution of super-resolution microscopy techniques has allowed many scientists to peer past the most significant limitation in conventional fluorescence microscopy – the diffraction limit. Super-resolution microscopy systems are able to resolve two points that are less than 250 nm apart, which supersedes the resolution of diffraction limited systems. Colocalization studies are frequently used in the biomedical sciences to measure the close physical association and functional interaction of two biological structures. Previous colocalization conclusions made with conventional fluorescence microscopy are largely based on how the colors …

Digesting Gender: Gendered Foodways In Modern Chinese Literature, 1890s–1940s, Zhuo Feng Oct 2020

Digesting Gender: Gendered Foodways In Modern Chinese Literature, 1890s–1940s, Zhuo Feng

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, I investigate Han Bangqing (1856–1894), Lao She (1899– 1966), and Su Qing’s (1914–1982) works to study the literary representations of how people purchased, prepared, shared, and ate food in different social contexts allowing them to adapt to new gender norms. I contend that the intersection of food, gender and literature stages the process through which people reconciled different and sometimes conflicting gender norms through their everyday eating practices. When encountering new cooking and eating practices in these literary works, people reflect upon their past lives and, wittingly or unwittingly, begin to accept different gender norms, and modify …

Hunter-Gatherer Behavior At Dorn Levee #1 (38fa608): An Analysis Of Lithic Assemblage Formation At A South Carolina Piedmont Site, Robert Altom Cesarini Lyerly

Theses and Dissertations

The site of Dorn Levee #1 (38FA608) in the South Carolina Piedmont has the potential to provide unique information regarding the behaviors and activities of the hunter-gatherer populations who inhabited it throughout prehistory. The Late and Terminal Archaic Period landscape in the Southeast saw with it many major changes in hunter-gatherer lifeways that had begun initial development in periods prior. The continued use of Dorn Levee #1 suggests that it was highly important for these hunter-gatherers, and an analysis of their mobility patterns and general behaviors through the associated lithic debitage material can assist in illuminating its role within a …

Optimal Pregnancy Outcomes And Subsequent Postnatal Development, Maria Sevoyan Oct 2020

Optimal Pregnancy Outcomes And Subsequent Postnatal Development, Maria Sevoyan

Theses and Dissertations

Optimal pregnancy outcomes and subsequent postnatal development in childhood are important contributors for health in adulthood. Some contributors to pregnancy outcomes include interpregnancy interval (IPI) and gestational age. Postnatal growth patterns also contribute to neurodevelopment and metabolic health outcomes later in life.

Several systematic reviews consistently show that short and long IPIs are associated with increased risk of subsequent adverse perinatal outcomes. Recent studies demonstrate that previously observed consistent positive associations between short and long IPIs and adverse perinatal outcomes might be due to unmeasured confounding rather than the length of the IPI. We used the National Institute of Child …

Effect Of Lifestyle, Medical School Culture And Income On Medical Students' Decision To Pursue A Primary Care Career In Saudi Arabia, Ahmed Abdullah Alhussain Oct 2020

Effect Of Lifestyle, Medical School Culture And Income On Medical Students' Decision To Pursue A Primary Care Career In Saudi Arabia, Ahmed Abdullah Alhussain

Theses and Dissertations

This study aims to examine the relationship of medical school students who select primary care as their career specialty. Based on extensive literature review, we focused on the three main factors that influence students to consider career specialty: lifestyle, income, and medical school culture. With a paper questionnaire of a cross-sectional study survey at ten medical schools, we were able to collect 1,006 participants from fourth and fifth year students. The clear majority of students considered lifestyle characteristics to be a significant influence in their career decision (PP<.05). Also, we found there was a significant relationship between students’ specialty choices and income variables. The result showed us that medical school culture played a notable role in terms of forming the students’ decisions in different ways. First, specialty characteristics were strongly correlated with career consideration. Second, having advising and mentoring within the medical school enhanced the probability of choosing primary care specialty. Finally, the effect of the primary care course was significant and closely related to the choice of the primary care specialty. In conclusion, the study demonstrated the impact of lifestyle, income, and medical school culture on student career selection. These results are in parallel with previous studies conducted in many countries around the world.

Categorical And Fuzzy Ensemble-Based Algorithms For Cluster Analysis, Bridget Nicole Manning Oct 2020

Categorical And Fuzzy Ensemble-Based Algorithms For Cluster Analysis, Bridget Nicole Manning

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on improving multivariate methods of cluster analysis. In Chapter 3 we discuss methods relevant to the categorical clustering of tertiary data while Chapter 4 considers the clustering of quantitative data using ensemble algorithms. Lastly, in Chapter 5, future research plans are discussed to investigate the clustering of spatial binary data.

Cluster analysis is an unsupervised methodology whose results may be influenced by the types of variables recorded on observations. When dealing with the clustering of categorical data, solutions produced may not accurately reflect the structure of the process that generated them. Increased variability within the latent structure …

The Role Of Hiv-1 Tat-Mediated Inhibition Of The Dopamine And Norepinephrine Transporters In The Neuropathology Of Hiv-1 Associated Neurocognitive Disorders, Matthew Strauss Oct 2020

The Role Of Hiv-1 Tat-Mediated Inhibition Of The Dopamine And Norepinephrine Transporters In The Neuropathology Of Hiv-1 Associated Neurocognitive Disorders, Matthew Strauss

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the success of combinatorial antiretroviral therapy (cART) in controlling peripheral HIV infection and improving the lives of HIV-1 patients, roughly 50% of this population continues to develop a group of neurological complications including cognitive dysfunction, motor deficits, and dementia collectively referred to as HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). The continuing presence of the transactivator of transcription (Tat) protein in cART-treated HIV-1 patients has been suggested to play a crucial role in the neurotoxicity and cognitive impairment evident in HAND. HIV-1 Tat protein has been detected in dopamine (DA) -rich brain areas, and long-term viral protein exposure has been found to …

Characterizing Patterns Of Adherence To Physical Activity Goals In Behavioral Weight Control, Melissa Lee Stansbury Oct 2020

Characterizing Patterns Of Adherence To Physical Activity Goals In Behavioral Weight Control, Melissa Lee Stansbury

Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Many individuals fall short of the physical activity (PA) goals provided during lifestyle programs, and there is considerable variability in weight loss response and adherence to recommendations for behavior change. Weight loss response within the early weeks of program initiation predicts future weight loss success; however, little is known about what distinguishes those who respond well to treatment from those who fail to respond. Exposing the behavioral patterns which underlie weight loss response may point towards targets for treatment optimization. The purpose of this study was to (1) characterize individuals with distinct patterns of adherence to PA goals during …

The Utility Of Multiple Structure Torsion Angle Alignment In Protein Active Site Description (Asd), Devaun L. Mcfarland Oct 2020

The Utility Of Multiple Structure Torsion Angle Alignment In Protein Active Site Description (Asd), Devaun L. Mcfarland

Theses and Dissertations

Proteins are responsible for various functions throughout organisms, or within the systems, they operate. Active-sites or functional/ binding sites are regions responsible for activity in a protein; they serve as a catalyst for reactions, attach or bind to other molecules (ligands), and maintain function. With the profusion of protein sequence and structure data, it's increasingly relevant to develop automated methods of identifying and investigating active-sites for proteins. Active-sites identification will have a direct impact: in better understanding molecular basis for diseases, assisting in drug design, the study of targeting mutants, and for functional annotation of unknown proteins. The proper knowledge …
