Developing Teachers’ Intentions Of Incorporating Socioscientific Issues In Lesson Design, Zachary Minken, Augusto Z. Macalalag Jr., Greer Richardson
Faculty Curated Graduate Works
In an effort to increase students’ informed decisions and evidence-based argumentation and perspective taking in the STEM classroom, this case study explored the ways in which teachers’ thinking and intention of incorporating Socioscientific Issues (SSI) into their lesson plans change after participating in an experiential workshop. Recognizing the difficulties inherent in SSI implementation, the day-long teacher development implemented a multi-layered approach which included declarative and procedural knowledge construction, namely understanding SSI components, SSI lesson planning, and learning STEM topics through the SSI framework. Pre-post conference questionnaires and lesson analysis showed that teachers were adept in developing SSI-focused lessons. In addition, …

Comparison Of Cpu And Parabricks Gpu Enabled Bioinformatics Software For High Throughput Clinical Genomic Applications, Stefano Rosati
Master's Theses (2009 -)
In recent years, high performance computing (HPC) has begun to revolutionize the architecture of software and servers to meet the ever-increasing demand for speed & efficiency. One of the ways this change is manifesting is the adoption of graphics processor units (GPUs). Used correctly, GPUS can increase throughput and decrease compute time for certain computational problems. Bioinformatics, an HPC dependent discipline, is no exception. As bioinformatics continues advance clinical care by sequencing patient’s DNA and RNA for diagnosis of diseases, there is an ever-increasing demand for faster data processing to improve clinical sequencing turnaround time. Parabricks, a GPU enabled bioinformatics …

Identification Of Quantitative Trait Loci Associated With Canopy Temperature In Soybean, Sumandeep Kaur Bazzer, Larry C. Purcell
Identification Of Quantitative Trait Loci Associated With Canopy Temperature In Soybean, Sumandeep Kaur Bazzer, Larry C. Purcell
Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
A consistent risk for soybean (Glycine max L.) production is the impact of drought on growth and yield. Canopy temperature (CT) is an indirect measure of transpiration rate and stomatal conductance and may be valuable in distinguishing differences among genotypes in response to drought. The objective of this study was to map quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with CT using thermal infrared imaging in a population of recombinant inbred lines developed from a cross between KS4895 and Jackson. Heritability of CT was 35% when estimated across environments. QTL analysis identified 11 loci for CT distributed on eight chromosomes that …

Habitat Associations Of Catshark Egg Cases (Chondrichthyes: Carcharhiniformes: Pentanchidae) From The U.S. Pacific Coast, Amber N. Reichert
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Many marine species select sites for reproduction based on habitat suitability, environmental tolerances, and oceanographic conditions, in order to enhance development or survival of their offspring. For many species living in the deep sea, it is unknown which factors influence this aspect of the reproductive process. In this study, the occurrence and influences of oviposition site selection were determined for the brown catshark, Apristurus brunneus, and filetail catshark, Parmaturus xaniurus, in the greater Monterey Bay region, providing novel insights into specific habitat preferences and depth distributions. Video footage from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), and the …
Fish-Derived Nutrients In California Kelp Forest Ecosystems, June Shrestha
Fish-Derived Nutrients In California Kelp Forest Ecosystems, June Shrestha
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
In marine systems, fishes excrete dissolved nutrients rich in nitrogen, which is a biolimiting nutrient essential for regulating primary production and macroalgal growth in the ocean. Often overlooked in attempts to explain variability in kelp forest productivity, relatively little is known about the magnitude of nutrients excreted by fishes and what factors may influence nutrient excretion rates. I investigated the supply of nutrients excreted by the dominant fishes (30 species representing ~85% of total fish biomass) on nearshore rocky reefs in central and southern California. Using rapid field incubations, I measured the amount of dissolved ammonium (NH4+) released per individual …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Studying physiologic stress responses can assist in understanding the welfare of animals. One method of measuring the physiologic stress response is evaluating concentrations of glucocorticoid metabolites in feces. Previously, using an adrenocorticotropic hormone challenge, we found fecal glucocorticoid metabolite levels were a reliable indicator of physiologic stress response in coyotes (Canis latrans). We determine whether glucocorticoid metabolite concentrations remain stable when collecting feces over a 2-week period, a timeframe commonly used in scat surveys for wild canids. We collected feces from 6 captive coyotes maintained at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Wildlife Services, National Wildlife Research Center, Predator …

Mindful Learning Experiences Through Structured Reflections During A Youth Travel-Abroad Program, Gary Ellis, Andrew Lacanienta, William Zanolini, Darlene Locke
Journal of Youth Development
Mindfulness is an actively engaged state of mind when an individual is attuned to their surrounding multi- sensory elements. Mindful learning experiences during youth programs may enhance learning and the overall quality of experiences. We developed, executed, and evaluated an end-of-day structured mindfulness experience during a 4-H travel camp. In this paper we summarize the program and its outcomes and share details we believe will assist other youth professionals who may want to build structured mindfulness experiences into their own programs. Through the 4-H Global Travelers program, 20 youth participated in a 7-day travel camp in Argentina. At the end …
Effects Of Biomass Loss On The Seasonal Variability In Storage Compounds Of Pterygophora Californica, Lindsay M. Cooper
Effects Of Biomass Loss On The Seasonal Variability In Storage Compounds Of Pterygophora Californica, Lindsay M. Cooper
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The stalked kelp, Pterygophora californica, is an important secondary canopy- forming species of coastal kelp forests from Alaska to Baja. It has long been thought that due to its long-lived, perennial thallus structures, seasonal growth and reproduction, and compound translocation capabilities, Pterygophora creates nutrient reserves. However, many aspects of Pterygophora have been understudied, including this theorized storage mechanism. This study addressed its storage capabilities by identifying nutrient compartmentalization, monitoring thalli over time, and examining allocation through biomass removals. Compartmentalization was observed among thallus regions of control thalli. All regions of the stipe and the reproductive sori had a higher …
Gene Expression Responses Of Larval Gopher (Sebastes Carnatus) And Blue (S. Mystinus) Rockfish To Ocean Acidification And Hypoxia, Jacoby Baker
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Global climate change is driving shifts in ocean chemistry, which combined with intensification of coastal upwelling, reduces ocean pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) content in the nearshore habitats of the California Current System. Physiological plasticity, within and across generations, might be especially important for long-lived, late-to-mature species, like rockfishes (genus Sebastes), that may be unable to keep pace with climate change via genetic adaptation. Rockfishes exhibit matrotrophic viviparity and may be able to buffer their offspring from environmental stress through early developmental exposure or transgenerational plasticity (non-genetic inheritance of phenotypes). In this study, mature female gopher (S. carnatus …

Age-Related Changes In Repetition Suppression Of Neural Activity During Emotional Future Simulation, Aleea L. Devitt, Preston P. Thakral, Karl Szpunar, Donna Rose Addis, Daniel L. Schacter
Psychology: Faculty Publications
Despite advances in understanding the consequences of age-related episodic memory decline for future simulation, much remains unknown regarding changes in the neural underpinnings of future thinking with age. We used a repetition suppression paradigm to explore age-related changes in the neural correlates of emotional future simulation. Younger and older adults simulated positive, negative, and neutral future events either 2 or 5 times. Reductions in neural activity for events simulated 5 versus 2 times (i.e., repetition suppression) identify brain regions responsive to the specific emotion of simulated events. Critically, older adults showed greater repetition suppression than younger adults in the temporal …

Coordinated River Infrastructure Decisions Improve Net Social-Ecological Benefits, Samuel G. Roy, Adam Daigneault, Joseph Zydlewski, Allison Truhlar, Sean Smith, Shaleen Jain, David Hart
New Hampshire EPSCoR
We explore the social, ecological, economic, and technical dimensions of sustainable river infrastructure development and the potential benefits of coordinating decisions such as dam removal and stream crossing improvement. Dam removal is common practice for restoring river habitat connectivity and ecosystem health. However, stream crossings such as culverts are often 15 times more abundant than dams and may pose similar ecological impacts. Using multi-objective optimization for a model system of 6100 dams and culverts in Maine, USA, we demonstrate substantial benefit-cost improvements provided by coordinating habitat connectivity decisions. Benefit-cost efficiency improves by two orders of magnitude when coordinating more decisions …

In a complex work environment, an operational challenge may be controlling the multitude of independent objects that are required for a manual task and/or object manipulation, such as experienced by astronauts, surgeons, underwater operations, manufacturing etc. One possible option is the enhancement of the person’s capabilities through a robotic supernumerary limb (Figure 1). The idea has already been implemented in a limited application, where the United States Army Research Laboratory developed a passive limb to aid soldiers in weapon carrying and stabilization[1]. Researchers are also creating supernumerary robots. Parietti, et al. [2] designed the Supernumerary Robotics Limbs to address aircraft …
Law On The Half Shell: Applying A Right-To-Farm Framework To Virginia's Aquaculture Industry, Matt Woodward, Andrew Corso
Law On The Half Shell: Applying A Right-To-Farm Framework To Virginia's Aquaculture Industry, Matt Woodward, Andrew Corso
Virginia Coastal Policy Center
Beginning in the 1970s and 1980s, states responded to mounting land use conflicts by enacting Right-to-Farm or “RTF” laws. These laws serve to protect farmers and other agricultural producers by shielding their operations from nuisance suits. Virginia’s RTF law has helped to resolve land use conflicts and has helped to protect an agricultural industry that is both culturally and economically vital to the state.
Commercial shellfish activity has also historically proven vital to Virginia’s unique coastal identity and economy. Further, over the last several decades, Virginia’s diverse aquaculture industry has grown, making Virginia one of the leading producers of aquacultural …

Genetically Encoded Phase Contrast Agents For Digital Holographic Microscopy, Arash Farhadi, Manuel Bedrossian, Justin Lee, Gabrielle H. Ho, Mikhail G. Shapiro, Jay Nadeau
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Quantitative phase imaging and digital holographic microscopy have shown great promise for visualizing the motion, structure and physiology of microorganisms and mammalian cells in three dimensions. However, these imaging techniques currently lack molecular contrast agents analogous to the fluorescent dyes and proteins that have revolutionized fluorescence microscopy. Here we introduce the first genetically encodable phase contrast agents based on gas vesicles. The relatively low index of refraction of the air-filled core of gas vesicles results in optical phase advancement relative to aqueous media, making them a “positive” phase contrast agent easily distinguished from organelles, dyes, or microminerals. We demonstrate this …

Atmospheric iron solubility varies depending on whether the particles are collected in rural or urban areas, with urban areas showing increased iron solubility. In this study, we investigate if the iron species present in different environments affects its ultimate solubility. Field data are presented from the Platte River Air Pollution and Photochemistry Experiment (PRAPPE), aimed at understanding the interactions between organic carbon and trace elements in atmospheric particulate matter (PM). 24-hr PM2.5 samples were collected during the summer and winter (2016–2017), at three different sites on the Eastern Colorado plains: an urban, agricultural, and a mixed site. Downtown Denver had …

We report that ectopic expression of Nfix in primary mouse HSPC extended their ex vivo culture from 20 to 40 days. HSPC overexpressing Nfix displayed hypersensitivity to supportive cytokines and reduced apoptosis when subjected to cytokine deprivation compared to controls. Ectopic Nfix resulted in elevated levels of c-Mpl transcripts and cell surface protein on primary murine HSPC as well as increased phosphorylation of STAT5, which is known to be activated down-stream of c-MPL signaling. Blocking c-MPL signaling by removal of its ligand, thrombopoietin (TPO), or addition of a c-MPL neutralizing antibody negated the anti-apoptotic effect of Nfix overexpression on cultured …
Ocean-Atmosphere Interactions During Intraseasonal Oscillations In The Northern Indian Ocean, Heather Leigh Roman-Stork
Ocean-Atmosphere Interactions During Intraseasonal Oscillations In The Northern Indian Ocean, Heather Leigh Roman-Stork
Theses and Dissertations
The Indian Ocean and the monsoon system are dynamically complex. In the Bay of Bengal (BoB) and southeastern Arabian Sea (SEAS), surface circulation is strongly influenced by the monsoons and notable local eddying that modulates the East India Coastal Current (EICC). In this study, the role of freshwater transported from the BoB into the SEAS in determining both the timing of monsoon onset and the strength of the ensuing monsoon is examined. It is found that the long-term decrease in moisture flux from the sea surface and freshwater transport into the SEAS, along with a rise in upper ocean heat …

Synthetic Strategies For The Preparation Of Novel Complex Actinide Oxides And Fluorides, Kristen A. Pace
Theses and Dissertations
The steady accumulation of nuclear waste over many decades has yielded a staggering amount of waste that we must contend with, and with the amount of available space in interim storage facilities diminishing, it has become increasingly more urgent to find viable solutions to nuclear waste storage. The vitrification process has been widely adopted for immobilization of high-level waste; however, the process is inadequate for more complex waste streams and the produced glasses exhibit limited loading capacities. To address this, considerable research efforts have been devoted to the development of new materials as prospective waste forms. Crystalline materials are promising …

Interplay Of Phytohormones Facilitate Sorghum Tolerance To Aphids, Sajjan Grover, Earl Agpawa, Gautam Sarath, Scott E. Sattler, Joe Louis
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Key message -- Interactions among phytohormones are essential for providing tolerance of sorghum plants to aphids.
Plant’s encounter with insect herbivores trigger defense signaling networks that fine-tune plant resistance to insect pests. Although it is well established that phytohormones contribute to antixenotic- and antibiotic-mediated resistance to insect pests, their role in conditioning plant tolerance, the most durable and promising category of host plant resistance, is largely unknown. Here, we screened a panel of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) inbred lines to identify and characterize sorghum tolerance to sugarcane aphids (SCA; Melanaphis sacchari Zehntner), a relatively new and devastating pest of sorghum in …
