Comparing Deep Learning And Immunohistochemistry In Determining The Site Of Origin For Well-Differentiated Neuroendocrine Tumors, Jordan Redemann, Fred A. Schultz, Cathy Martinez, Michael Harrell, Douglas P. Clark, David R. Martin, Joshua A. Hanson
Pathology Research and Scholarship
Background: Determining the site of origin for metastatic well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumors (WDNETs) is challenging, and immunohistochemical (IHC) profiles do not always lead to a definitive diagnosis. We sought to determine if a deep-learning convolutional neural network (CNN) could improve upon established IHC profiles in predicting the site of origin in a cohort of WDNETs from the common primary sites.
Materials and methods: Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained tissue microarrays (TMAs) were created using 215 WDNETs arising from the known primary sites. A CNN trained and tested on 60% (n = 130) and 40% (n = 85) of these cases, …

New Records Document Cystiphora Sonchi (Vallot) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) And Associated Parasitoids (Hymenoptera) In The Continental United States, Louis S. Hesler, Michael W. Gates, Eric A. Beckendorf
Insecta Mundi
A gall midge, Cystiphora sonchi (Vallot, 1827) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), is reported for the first time in the continental United States of America from the states of Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The gall midge is an obligate parasite of Sonchus L., including perennial sowthistle, Sonchus arvensis L., a weed that was the impetus for earlier releases of C. sonchi as a biological control in Canada. Patches of S. arvensis were commonly infested with C. sonchi, and often leaves were densely galled. Dissections of galled leaves led to the novel finding of multiple C. sonchi larvae in some individual …

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
Evidencing the value of programs and services challenges educational developers to measure a range of outcomes. While direct measures of faculty use of effective teaching behaviors and student learning are desirable, these methods are time consuming and resource intensive. We provide a scale that is easy to deploy and can be adapted to different programs. Our psychometrically sound scale measures one facet of faculty learning about teaching—appreciation of pedagogy. The scale measures awareness, knowledge integration, emotions, beliefs, and self-reported behaviors related to the appreciation of pedagogy. We also examine scale correlates, including teaching identity, confidence, and control.

Tell Me More About Alex: Helping Instructors Uncover And Mitigate Their Implicit Biases, Cait S. Kirby, Heather N. Fedesco
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
All instructors bring a set of unconscious or implicit biases to the classroom. These biases can negatively impact the way they interact with students, thus affecting important student outcomes (for example, grades, sense of belonging). Facilitators leading programming on inclusive teaching may struggle to identify strategies they should include in sessions to help unearth and address these biases in others. We have created an activity that can be tailored to fit a variety of teaching contexts and audiences and that helps unveil implicit biases while potentially mitigating some challenges associated with participant responses to such conversations.

Phytoremediation Of Mining Contaminated Soil And Groundwater By Hemp (Cannabis Sativa L.) And Locally Adapted Native Plants, Nathan Carpenter
Phytoremediation Of Mining Contaminated Soil And Groundwater By Hemp (Cannabis Sativa L.) And Locally Adapted Native Plants, Nathan Carpenter
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
Phytoremediation is an environmentally friendly and cost-effective method of using plants to remediate soils and groundwater by extracting and accumulating contaminants in their tissues. Using locally adapted native plants is preferable to non-native species due to native species being accustomed to the environmental conditions allowing for increased plant growth and fitness. It is typical to use hyperaccumulator plant species since they will grow in soils with very high concentrations of metals and metalloids and show efficient ability to recover (phytoextraction potential) and accumulate (bioconcentration factor) the contaminants in its tissues.
This study focuses on using thirteen locally adapted native plant …

Analysis Of Semi-Arid Riparian Environments Using Satellite Imagery, Kira Overin
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
Semi-arid riparian environments are at risk of being over-exploited or degraded due to increased water usage associated with growing housing demands. Trends surrounding these developments can be monitored using freely available Landsat satellite imagery in conjunction with seasonal stream discharge rates. This project focuses on a stream system located southwest of Ennis, Montana, where population is growing rapidly. It aims to characterize the connection between variable discharge rates in small-scale riparian environments and adjoining vegetation health, while considering possible implications of continued urbanization. Methods for preventing riparian ecosystem degradation and promoting resilience are also discussed.

Investigation Into The Effects Of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Exposure On Well-Bore Cement Integrity, Claude Boiteau
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
Current subterranean injection of anthropogenic Carbon Dioxide (CO2), or CO2 resulting from human activity, is occurring at multiple locations in both the domestic United States and abroad. It involves the capture of CO2 from stationary industrial sources such as power plants and processing facilities, and subsequent injection into suitable subsurface environments. Injection is an alternative to the release of CO2 and reduces the environmental impact of increased atmospheric carbon levels. The three scenarios for CO2 injection are: the sequestration of captured anthropogenic CO2, the re-injection of produced CO2, and the …

Coal Char Affects Soil Ph To Reduce Ammonia Volatilization From Sandy Loam Soil, Dinesh Panday, Maysoon M. Mikha, Bijesh Maharjan
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Ammonia (NH3) volatilization loss adversely affects N availability in soil-plant systems, reduces crop yield, and negatively impacts environment. Char (coal combustion residue), which contains up to 293 g kg−1 total C by weight, has been shown to reduce NH3 volatilization due to its considerably high surface area and cation exchange capacity. The NH3 loss can be greatly affected by a shift in soil pH or urea hydrolysis. A 21-d laboratory study was conducted to evaluate the effects of char on soil pH, N transformations, and subsequent NH3 volatilization in sandy loam soil. Two …

The history of COVID-19 has profoundly affected both, professional and personal aspect of journalists - from psychological trauma and refined investigations, to health risks for their families. When COVID-19 began to spread rapidly, journalists of all sectors didn’t find it easy to report from the field, nor they had easy access to certain areas. All this psychological "terror" unavoidably resulted with consequences and negative effects in daily reporting routines, particularly to online reporting. Reporting for online media seemed a bit easier at first sight, however it was not easy at all to present the findings to the public. There were …

Early childhood caries (ECC) has been considered to be at epidemic proportions in developing countries. There is a scientific consensus regarding the benefit of a constant supply of low levels of fluoride, especially at the biofilm/saliva/ tooth interface in preventing dental caries. The use of controlled and sustained delivery systems containing fluoride can be considered as an effective means of eradicating ECC in high-risk individuals. The use of chlorhexidine as an antimicrobial agent in combination with fluoride is beneficial (Naidu et al., 2016). Slow-releasing devices containing both fluoride and chlorhexidine do not exist as of now. Hence, the aim of …

Using Schema Training To Facilitate Students' Understanding Of Challenging Engineering Concepts In Heat Transfer And Thermodynamics, Dazhi Yang, Ruth Streveler, Ronald L. Miller, Inanc Senocak, Jim Slotta
Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Background: Chi and colleagues have argued that some of the most challenging engineering concepts exhibit properties of emergent systems. However, students often lack a mental framework, or schema, for understanding emergence. Slotta and Chi posited that helping students develop a schema for emergent systems, referred to as schema training, would increase the understanding of challenging concepts exhibiting emergent properties.
Purpose: We tested the effectiveness of schema training and explored the nature of challenging concepts from thermodynamics and heat transfer. We investigated if schema training could (a) repair misconceptions in advanced engineering students and (b) prevent them in beginning engineering students. …

Shift In The Paradigm For Gssp Boundary Definition, V. I. Davydov
Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
For over 200 years the use of biotic events as the basis for the establishment of chronostratigraphic boundaries has been the only approach successfully utilized for international and national chronostratigraphy. The traditional biostratigraphic method provides relatively high resolution, averaging 1 Ma or sometimes less. This biochronological evolutionary approach to the Global Boundary Stratotype section and Point (GSSP) utilizes biotic Primary Markers (PM), with a few exceptions, encompasses the integrated PM and other non-PM markers as the general principles for defining GSSP boundaries and is a reasonably reliable mechanism for global correlation and a relatively stable International Geologic Time Scale (IGTS). …

Constructing A Time Scale Of Biotic Recovery Across The Cretaceous–Paleogene Boundary, Corral Bluffs, Denver Basin, Colorado, U.S.A., Vincent Isakson, Mark D. Schmitz
Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
The Cretaceous–Paleogene (K–Pg) boundary interval represents one of the most significant mass extinctions and ensuing biotic recoveries in Earth history. Earliest Paleocene fossil mammal faunas corresponding to the Puercan North American Land Mammal Age (NALMA) are thought to be highly endemic and potentially diachronous, necessitating precise chronostratigraphic controls at key fossil localities to constrain recovery dynamics in continental biotas following the K–Pg mass extinction. The Laramide synorgenic sedimentary deposits within the Denver Basin in east-central Colorado preserve one of the most continuous and fossiliferous records of the K–Pg boundary interval in North America. Poor exposure in much of the Denver …

Modulation Of Sleep-Courtship Balance By Nutritional Status In Drosophila, José M Duhart, Victoria Baccini, Yanan Zhang, Daniel R Machado, Kyunghee Koh
Farber Institute for Neuroscience Faculty Papers
Sleep is essential but incompatible with other behaviors, and thus sleep drive competes with other motivations. We previously showed Drosophila males balance sleep and courtship via octopaminergic neurons that act upstream of courtship-regulating P1 neurons (Machado et al., 2017). Here, we show nutrition modulates the sleep-courtship balance and identify sleep-regulatory neurons downstream of P1 neurons. Yeast-deprived males exhibited attenuated female-induced nighttime sleep loss yet normal daytime courtship, which suggests male flies consider nutritional status in deciding whether the potential benefit of pursuing female partners outweighs the cost of losing sleep. Trans-synaptic tracing and calcium imaging identified dopaminergic neurons projecting to …
