Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

Introduction: Microglial cells play an important role in the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD). People with Down syndrome (DS) inevitably develop AD neuropathology (DSAD) by 40 years of age. We characterized the distribution of different microglial phenotypes in the brains of people with DS and DSAD.

Methods: Autopsy tissue from the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) from people with DS, DSAD, and neurotypical controls was immunostained with the microglial marker Iba1 to assess five microglia morphological types.

Results: Individuals with DS have more hypertrophic microglial cells in their white matter. In the gray matter, individuals with DSAD had significantly fewer ramified …

Mucilage-Capped Silver Nanoparticles For Glucose Electrochemical Sensing And Fuel Cell Applications, Ziad Khalifa, Moustafa Zahran Dr, Magdy Zahran Prof, Magdi Abdel Azzem Prof

Chemical Engineering

A simple, cost-effective and green mucilage-capped silver nanoparticles (Mucilage-AgNPs) modified glassy carbon electrode (GC) composite was constructed for efficient and facile electrochemical oxidation of glucose for the first time. Mucilage-AgNPs were synthesized through the direct chemical reduction of Ag+ by mucilage extracted from Opuntia ficus-indica. Mucilage-AgNPs were identified and characterized using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and square wave voltammetry. Modification of the GC with AgNPs was carried out via a transfer-sticking technique with an immobilization time of 1 h. The Mucilage-AgNPs/GC composite was studied as a possible anode for glucose oxidation in a biofuel cell. The composite resulted in …

A Functional Context For Heterogeneity Of The Circadian Clock In Cells, Martha Merrow, Mary E. Harrington Oct 2020

A Functional Context For Heterogeneity Of The Circadian Clock In Cells, Martha Merrow, Mary E. Harrington

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Characterization of circadian systems at the organism level—a top-down approach—has led to definition of unifying properties, a hallmark of the science of chronobiology. The next challenge is to use a bottom-up approach to show how the molecular workings of the cellular circadian clock work as building blocks of those properties. We review new studies, including a recently published PLOS Biology paper by Nikhil and colleagues, that show how programmed but also stochastic generation of variation in cellular circadian period explain important adaptive features of entrained circadian phase.

Cultivating Water Literacy In Stem Education: Undergraduates' Socio-Scientific Reasoning About Socio-Hydrologic Issues, David C. Owens, Destini N. Petitt, Diane Lally, Cory T. Forbes

Middle Grades & Secondary Education: Faculty Publications

Water-literate individuals effectively reason about the hydrologic concepts that underlie socio-hydrological issues (SHI), but functional water literacy also requires concomitant reasoning about the societal, non-hydrological aspects of SHI. Therefore, this study explored the potential for the socio-scientific reasoning construct (SSR), which includes consideration of the complexity of issues, the perspectives of stakeholders involved, the need for ongoing inquiry, skepticism about information sources, and the affordances of science toward the resolution of the issue, to aid undergraduates in acquiring such reasoning skills. In this fixed, embedded mixed methods study (N = 91), we found SHI to hold great potential as meaningful …

Ace2 Mouse Models: A Toolbox For Cardiovascular And Pulmonary Research, Hongpeng Jia, Xinping Yue, Eric Lazartigues

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) has been identified as the host entry receptor for the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic. ACE2 is a regulatory enzyme of the renin-angiotensin system and has protective functions in many cardiovascular, pulmonary and metabolic diseases. This review summarizes available murine models with systemic or organ-specific deletion of ACE2, or with overexpression of murine or human ACE2. The purpose of this review is to provide researchers with the genetic tools available for further understanding of ACE2 biology and for the investigation of ACE2 in the pathogenesis and treatment of COVID-19.

School of Medicine Publications

Age is the dominant risk factor for most chronic human diseases, but the mechanisms through which ageing confers this risk are largely unknown1. The age-related acquisition of somatic mutations that lead to clonal expansion in regenerating haematopoietic stem cell populations has recently been associated with both haematological cancer2,3,4 and coronary heart disease5—this phenomenon is termed clonal haematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP)6. Simultaneous analyses of germline and somatic whole-genome sequences provide the opportunity to identify root causes of CHIP. Here we analyse high-coverage whole-genome sequences from 97,691 participants of diverse …

Nature Computation Of Self-Adaptive Dynamic Control Strategy Of Population Grouping, Wanlu Ni, Weidong Ji, Xiaoqing Sun Oct 2020

Nature Computation Of Self-Adaptive Dynamic Control Strategy Of Population Grouping, Wanlu Ni, Weidong Ji, Xiaoqing Sun

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Multi-population optimization method can solve the optimization difficulty caused by the increase of data volume, but the existing population grouping is carried out by means of random grouping or artificial setting, which doesn't take particle trajectories into full consideration. In view of the problem a self-adaptive dynamic control strategy of population grouping is proposed, which uses Gaussian fitting function as the reference curve of population grouping and divides sub populations according to the function's monotone interval. For particles with the trend of crossing the upper boundary of sub populations, the contrarian strategy is adopted to maintain the population diversity …

Research On Modeling And Process Parameters Optimization Of Glcn Fermentation Process, Wanli Yu, Wang Yan, Zhicheng Ji

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In view of the high price and low detection accuracy of biosensors, which makes it difficult to obtain accurate and real-time biological parameters in the process of GlcN fermentation, the Least Square Support Vector Machine (LSSVM) model is established to predict the cell concentration, product concentration and substrate concentration. In order to improve the accuracy of the prediction model, the improved multiverse optimization algorithm based on Levy flight is utilized to optimize several parameters of the LSSVM model. On the basis of the model aiming at the maximum product concentration at the time of fermentation completion, the fermentation process …

Prediction Of N-Acetylglucosamine Content Based On Rf-Ga-Bp Neural Network, Wenfeng Yang, Wang Yan, Zhichen Ji

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In order to solve the problem that the content of N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) in the process of preparing glucocosamine (GlcN) by microbial fermentation is difficult to measure online, an improved prediction algorithm based on stochastic forest algorithm, genetic algorithm and neural network algorithm is proposed. The algorithm utilizes the feature of decreasing average impurity in random forest algorithm to analyze the relevance of the input characteristics. The initial weights and thresholds of the neural networks are optimized by the genetic algorithm. A prediction model based on the RF-GA-BP algorithm is established based on the data from the fermentation process of …

Deep Learning Grading System For Diabetic Retinopathy Using Fundus Images., Doaa Elsawah, Ahmed Elnakib, Hossam El-Din Moustafa

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is one of the main causes of blindness that can be overcome, if it is early detected. This work proposes an automated early detection and grading of DR using fundus images. The proposed detection and grading system investigate different deep learning architectures (i.e., ResNet and AlexNet) that are applied to an augment data to extract deep compact features of the fundus images. The extracted features are input to a pixel-wise Neural Network (NN) classifier or a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier for automated DR grading. The performance of the proposed system is evaluated using a publically available …

Factors Promoting Or Preventing Caregivers From Allowing Pediatric Participation In Research, José R. Fernández, Thomas Taylor, Yenni E. Cedillo, Beatriz Maciel, Daria Salyakina, Jennifer Mccafferty

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Introduction The likelihood of a child participating in a clinical trial is mostly independent of the child’s willingness to participate; children’s lack of autonomy obliges parental involvement, which is concurrently conditional to parental understanding, trust and endorsement of the research study. Objectives To identify potential predictors for allowing children to participate in clinical studies and to evaluate if motivators that promote or prevent parental support of children to participate in clinical studies differed according to racial/ethnic categorization.

Methods A stratified sample of 1,057 caregivers of children 1-18 years old who in 2015 resided in South Florida’s Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm …

When Is Family Involvement Effective In Substance Abuse Treatment: An Analysis Of The Existing Literature From A Social Work Perspective, Alyssa F. Giarrusso Oct 2020

When Is Family Involvement Effective In Substance Abuse Treatment: An Analysis Of The Existing Literature From A Social Work Perspective, Alyssa F. Giarrusso

Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research

Substance abuse is a growing problem in today’s society. While there are many different forms of treatment for substance abuse, some forms of treatment have proven to be more effective than others. In some cases, family intervention in substance abuse treatment has proven to be more effective than treatments that do not include family intervention. This paper is an analysis of existing literature regarding substance abuse treatment, highlighting specific circumstances in which family intervention tends to be most effective.

Group Homes In The Foster Care System: A Literature Review, Katherine Dolan Oct 2020

Group Homes In The Foster Care System: A Literature Review, Katherine Dolan

Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research

This paper examines literature with regard to the advantages and disadvantages of group homes within the foster care system. Group homes are associated with a negative stigma. The bleak narrative of group care stems, in part, to stereotypes surrounding behavioral and psychiatric issues. Researchers have found children in foster care experience poor living standards, are restricted by their environments, and are unhappy in group homes. Conversely, group homes provide a sense of community in a seemingly lonely situation, provide children with safer conditions than those they were removed from, and serve as a means of housing for children with no …

The Adaptationist View: Ambiguity In Infant Withdrawal After Prenatal Cocaine Exposure, Angelo Cadiente Oct 2020

The Adaptationist View: Ambiguity In Infant Withdrawal After Prenatal Cocaine Exposure, Angelo Cadiente

Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research

Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome is a set of symptoms that result from prenatal exposure to addictive drugs. This syndrome is often attributed to opiate withdrawal; yet, there is a controversy within the literature as to whether cocaine, an addictive stimulant, leads to a variant, which I term “cocaine-based Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome.” In this paper, I contrast the evidence that supports the presence of cocaine withdrawal in neonates with the opposing evidence that supports its absence. I offer an intermediary explanation through the “Adaptationist View,” which attributes the supposed symptoms of cocaine infant withdrawal to the neonate adapting to extreme changes in …

The Use Of Landscape Architecture To Enhance The Built Environmenta Study Of The City Of Alexandria, Egypt, Mohammed A. Nasr

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

The landscape architecture profession and its role in the planning process in Egypt are not clear and well defined. This led to the production of plans which lacks the existence of an obvious landscape strategy to both existing and new cities. A landscape planning concept which helps to maximize the contribution of the open spaces to the character and appearance of the city; conserve features and areas of historic interest; conserve and enhance existing features of wildlife interest and where appropriate create new habitats; facilitate public enjoyment and recreation in a way which respects the landscape and minimizes its erosion; …
