Emerging Regenerative Medicine And Tissue Engineering Strategies For Parkinson's Disease., James P Harris, Justin C Burrell, Laura A Struzyna, H Isaac Chen, Mijail D Serruya, John A Wolf, John E Duda, D Kacy Cullen

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common progressive neurodegenerative disease, affecting 1-2% of people over 65. The classic motor symptoms of PD result from selective degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc), resulting in a loss of their long axonal projections to the striatum. Current treatment strategies such as dopamine replacement and deep brain stimulation (DBS) can only minimize the symptoms of nigrostriatal degeneration, not directly replace the lost pathway. Regenerative medicine-based solutions are being aggressively pursued with the goal of restoring dopamine levels in the striatum, with several emerging techniques attempting to reconstruct the …

Susceptibility Of Campylobacter Strains To Selected Natural Products And Frontline Antibiotics, Gahamanyi Noel

All Rsif Scholars' Publications

Campylobacter species have developed resistance to existing antibiotics. The development of alternative therapies is, therefore, a necessity. This study evaluates the susceptibility of Campylobacter strains to selected natural products (NPs) and frontline antibiotics. Two C. jejuni strains (ATCC® 33560TM and MT947450) and two C. coli strains (ATCC® 33559TM and MT947451) were used. The antimicrobial potential of the NPs, including plant extracts, essential oils, and pure phytochemicals, was evaluated by broth microdilution. The growth was measured by spectrophotometry and iodonitrotetrazolium chloride. Antibiotic resistance genes (tet(O) and gyrA) were characterized at the molecular level. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and the minimum …

Population Demographics: Predictors Of The Relationship Between Alcohol Use Disorder And Major Depression, Mei Grace Behrendt Jan 2020

Population Demographics: Predictors Of The Relationship Between Alcohol Use Disorder And Major Depression, Mei Grace Behrendt

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

This thesis examines both biological and social explanations of alcohol use disorder (AUD) and major depression (MD) through a thorough review of current literature. Using multiple logistic regression analyses exploring the sociodemographic and alcohol use factors that contribute to reporting of major depression symptoms with data from the 2017 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, this thesis demonstrates how there are health disparities that exist among different demographic populations. Specifically, certain demographic characteristics such as racial or ethnic identity, gender, and socioeconomic status may contribute to increased risk of developing and reporting episodes of lifetime and past year major …

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Nebraska Red Derivatives For Protein Labeling Studies, Lauren Lesiak Jan 2020

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Nebraska Red Derivatives For Protein Labeling Studies, Lauren Lesiak

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) play a vital role in cell signaling, and imaging the internalization of these proteins will allow for better understand of protein trafficking within the cell, as well as identification of potential drug targets. However, there is a need for further development of fluorescent protein labels that are able to effectively monitor GPCR internalization in the near-infrared (NIR) range. We recently described a series of NIR fluorophores in which a phosphinate functionality is inserted at the bridging position of the xanthene scaffold, called the Nebraska Red (NR) dye series. These dyes are attractive reagents for the imaging …

Avoiding Pyrrhic Victories In Orbit: A Need For Kinetic Anti-Satellite Arms Control In The Twenty-First Century, Captain Cort S. Thompson

Journal of Air Law and Commerce

On March 27, 2019, India launched a direct ascent anti-satellite (ASAT) weapon, aimed at the Indian Ministry of Defense satellite Microsat-R. The kinetic-energy ASAT weapon collided with Microsat-R at an altitude of nearly 300 kilometers, creating an estimated 250 pieces of trackable debris from the 740-kilogram satellite. With this effective demonstration of ASAT capability, India became only the fourth nation to successfully intercept an orbiting satellite in the sixty-one years since the U.S.S.R. placed into orbit the first artificial satellite, Sputnik. While India’s demonstration purported to take deliberate steps to mitigate some of the risk associated with a …

Dna-Detection Based Diagnostics For Taenia Solium Cysticercosis In Porcine, Maxwell Wambua Waema, Gerald Misinzo, John M. Kagira, Eric L. Agola, Helena A. Ngowi

All Rsif Scholars' Publications

Porcine cysticercosis is a neglected and underestimated disease caused by metacestode stage of the tapeworm, Taenia solium(T. solium). Pigs are the intermediate hosts of T. solium while human are the only known definitive host. The disease has an economicconsequence because the affected farmers lose 50−100 percent of the value of pigs if they are infected. Lack of affordable, easy touse, sensitive, and specific molecular diagnostic tools for detection of infections at the farm level hinders the control of porcinecysticercosis in endemic areas. A number of DNA based diagnostic assays for the detection of T. solium infections in pigs havebeen developed …

Conservation Grazing With Native Irish Cattle In High Nature Value Environments, Kilian Kelly Jan 2020

Conservation Grazing With Native Irish Cattle In High Nature Value Environments, Kilian Kelly

Theses

Marrying conservation objectives with farming practices is a challenging necessity in the current era of anthropogenically-driven biodiversity loss. Upland habitats created by traditional farming are havens for wildlife but face multiple threats, including overgrazing and abandonment. Extensive cattle farming in the uplands has been mooted as a useful conservation measure, but Irish evidence supporting this approach is lacking. This thesis examines home range, habitat preferences and activity budgets for Dexter cattle in an extensive upland setting in southwest Ireland. It investigates the effects of the grazing regime on EU-protected habitats and ground beetles. Free-ranging cattle grazed the site over three …
