Characterizing The Spatial And Temporal Aspects Of Substrates, Channel Morphology, And Large Wood In Forested Streams In The Western Upper Peninsula, Michigan., Brian M. Danhoff

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The relationships between wood and streambed substrates, among other abiotic components, are complex and an important part of the arrangement and dynamics of habitat in forested stream ecosystems. The objective of this research was to expand how we approach the study of the physical components of forested streams by considering the methods used to quantify these features, particularly substrates. Additionally, we assessed the temporal change over 14 years for streambed substrates, channel morphology, and large wood in a selectively-logged watershed. Our final objective was to understand if a relationship exists between the complexity of streambed morphology derived from variograms, and …

Detection And Classification Of Eurasian Watermilfoil With Multispectral Drone-Enabled Sensing, Colin Brooks Jan 2020

Detection And Classification Of Eurasian Watermilfoil With Multispectral Drone-Enabled Sensing, Colin Brooks

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Littoral zones support growth of submerged aquatic vegetation, creating productive areas that provide food and habitat for fish, amphibians, macroinvertebrates, and other parts of the food web. Understanding macrophyte dynamics requires the identification of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) taxa, which can be possible if taxa of interest are spectrally distinct with data collected at appropriate scales. Eurasian watermilfoil, Myriophyllum spicatum or EWM, is a non-native SAV species that forms thick, often monotypic beds that reduce benthic species richness, restrict recreation, reduce property values, clog water intakes, and lower dissolved oxygen concentrations. Remote sensing of SAV species has to address the …

Phylogenetic And Biogeographical History Confirm The Anatolian Origin Of Bornmuellera (Brassicaceae) And Clade Divergence Between Anatolia And The Balkans In The Plio-Pleistocene Transition, Bariş Özüdoğru, Klaus Mummenhoff Jan 2020

Phylogenetic And Biogeographical History Confirm The Anatolian Origin Of Bornmuellera (Brassicaceae) And Clade Divergence Between Anatolia And The Balkans In The Plio-Pleistocene Transition, Bariş Özüdoğru, Klaus Mummenhoff

Turkish Journal of Botany

Understanding disjunct distribution patterns in the Balkan Peninsula and Anatolia is important in order to reconstruct robust biogeographical hypotheses. This is instrumental in understanding the recolonization patterns of Europe during the Quaternary glaciation/interglaciation periods and the potential role of Anatolia as a refugium. Unfortunately, only a few studies have been conducted to uncover such processes. Here, we used all eight species of the genus Bornmuellera (Brassicaceae) with a scattered distribution in the Balkans and Anatolia to reconstruct its biogeographic history. We applied nuclear internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and plastid trnL-F regions and showed that 1) Bornmuellera is monophyletic and, 2) …

Conformation And Binding Aspects Of Sulfated Carbohydrates By Liquid-State Nmr, William Vignovich Jan 2020

Conformation And Binding Aspects Of Sulfated Carbohydrates By Liquid-State Nmr, William Vignovich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Liquid-state NMR has long been an important tool for understanding the conformations and interactions of biomacromolecules. To date these conclusions have primarily been focused upon nucleotides and peptides with little information regarding the conformational structures of carbohydrates. Through the methods described in this manuscript the accurate conformational analysis of a sulfated fucan from Lytechinus variegatus has been assessed. This was achieved through a combination of NOESY spectroscopy and assessment of chemical exchange in hydroxyl protons undergoing fast chemical exchange with excess solvent. This is accomplished through usage of super- cooled H2O: acetone solvent and T1 inversion recovery. This methodology was …

Spatial Context And The Role Of Competition In Oviposition Habitat Selection By Cope’S Grey Treefrog (Hyla Chrysoscelis) And Culex Restuans Mosquitoes, Reed Carroll Scott Jan 2020

Spatial Context And The Role Of Competition In Oviposition Habitat Selection By Cope’S Grey Treefrog (Hyla Chrysoscelis) And Culex Restuans Mosquitoes, Reed Carroll Scott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Ideal Free Distribution (IFD) is an influential ecological model for predicting distribution of populations. Since its inception, attempts have been made to improve the IFD, including addition of spatial context. Spatial contagion is a newer ecological concept wherein quality of a habitat patch may affect the perception of neighboring patches. Using Cope’s gray treefrog (Hyla chrysoscelis) and Culex mosquitoes (Culex restuans), I conducted a series of outdoor mesocosm experiments to test key predictions of the IFD and address how it interacts with spatial contagion effects. I found some support for the IFD prediction that individual H. chrysoscelis should avoid …

Publications and Research

Mate searching is a key component of sexual reproduction that can have important implications for population viability, especially for the mate-finding Allee effect. Interannual sperm storage by females may be an adaptation that potentially attenuates mate limitation, but the demographic consequences of this functional trait have not been studied. Our goal is to assess the effect of female sperm storage durability on the strength of the mate-finding Allee effect and the viability of populations subject to low population density and habitat alteration. We used an individual-based simulation model that incorporates realistic representations of the demographic and spatial processes of our …

Prevalence Of Left-Handedness In China 2011: Small-Area Estimates, Hongwei Xu Jan 2020

Prevalence Of Left-Handedness In China 2011: Small-Area Estimates, Hongwei Xu

Publications and Research

Nationally representative survey data and small-area estimation techniques are used to assess the geographic prevalence of left-handedness in China 2011. Measures of individuals’ handedness are their self-reported dominant hand and their hand grip strength, which yield four estimates of left-handed prevalence, and these statistics are recorded at the provincial level. These estimates concord with one another. There are several geographic clusters of high-prevalence rates of left-handers located in ethnic minority-designated autonomous areas or historically revolutionary base areas, which may reflect a deep-rooted sense of defiance to authorities and promote such cultural values as individual autonomy and equality among local people.

Association Between Pm2.5 Concentrations And Hospitalization Cases For Schizophrenia And Mood Disorders In Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam From 2019 To 2020, Do Thi Hoai Thuong

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The evidence for adverse effects of ambient particulate matter pollution on mental and behavioral disorders (MBDs) is limited. Until now, few epidemiological studies have focused on this field, especially in developing countries. With the changes in concentrations and sources of air pollution over the past decade in Vietnam lead to high levels of air pollutants, especially particulate matters including PM2.5. Therefore, it is worthwhile to investigate the acute effects of outdoor air pollution on MBDs. However, no Vietnamese study has looked into the short-term effect of PM2.5 on hospitalization for MBDs. To examine the association between PM2.5 and the cases …

Medical practitioners, trained to isolate health within and upon the body of the individual, are now challenged to negotiate research and population health theories that link health status to geographic location as evidence suggests a connection between place and health. This paper builds an integrated place-health model and structural competency analytical framework with nine domains and four levels of proficiency that is utilized to assess a community-based photovoice project’s ability to shift the practice of medicine by medical students from the surface of the body to the body within a place. Analysis of the medical student’s photovoice data demonstrated that …

Retribution As Ancient Artifact And Modern Malady, Molly J. Walker Wilson Jan 2020

Retribution As Ancient Artifact And Modern Malady, Molly J. Walker Wilson

Lewis & Clark Law Review

One of the oldest and most entrenched goals of punishment is retribution, which is the idea that inflicting pain on someone who has committed a wrong is a worthwhile goal, regardless of any other benefits or harms that may result. Retribution has been the justification for increasingly punitive policies in the United States, the effect of which has decimated communities of color, strapped taxpayers with huge associated costs, and increased crime rates. It is difficult to understand why we perpetuate harmful policies based on “just deserts” until we consider that the foundation of these policies is moral outrage—a powerful, automatic, …

The use of interspecific hybrids during the industrial fermentation process has been well established, positioning the frontier of advancement in brewing to capitalize on the potential of Saccharomyces hybridization. Interspecific yeast hybrids used in modern monoculture inoculations benefit from a wide range of volatile metabolites that broaden the organoleptic complexity. This is the first report of sake brewing by Saccharomyces arboricola and its hybrids. S. arboricola x S. cerevisiae direct-mating generated cryotolerant interspecific hybrids which increased yields of ethanol and ethyl hexanoate compared to parental strains, important flavor attributes of fine Japanese ginjo sake rice wine. Hierarchical clustering heatmapping with …

'We Were Hoping': The Emmaus Road Encounter As A Novel Approach To Faith-Science Dialogue, Harold A. Laurence V Jan 2020

'We Were Hoping': The Emmaus Road Encounter As A Novel Approach To Faith-Science Dialogue, Harold A. Laurence V

Seattle Pacific Seminary Theses

This thesis proposes a novel paradigm for faith-science dialogue, drawing a Biblical analogy between two disciples’ Emmaus Road encounter with the risen Jesus (Luke 24:13-35) and contemporary faithful scientists wrestling with narrative conflict between the findings of science and the confession of faith. For science’s reading public, science serves as an alternative mythmaking discourse, whose narratives may indeed conflict with faith. This thesis proposes that theology ought to deploy Biblical preaching to resolve such narrative conflicts. To guide this process, this thesis proposes that Jesus’ two responses to the troubles of the disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35) …

Crop and animal production techniques have changed significantly over the last century. In the early 1900s, animal power was replaced by tractor power that resulted in tremendous improvements in field productivity, which subsequently laid foundation for mechanized agriculture. While precision agriculture has enabled site-specific management of crop inputs for improved yields and quality, precision livestock farming has boosted efficiencies in animal and dairy industries. By 2020, highly automated systems are employed in crop and animal agriculture to increase input efficiency and agricultural output with reduced adverse impact on the environment. Ground and aerial robots combined with artificial intelligence (AI) techniques …

Intermodulation Distortions From A Chain Of Coupled Nonlinear Oscillators Near A Hopf Bifurcation, Yanathip Thipmaungprom

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The inner ear can produce sounds whose frequencies correspond to linear combinations of the stimulus frequencies, f1 and f2. These sounds, called Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions (DPOAEs), can be measured by inserting a microphone into the ear canal. In human, the intensity level of DPOAEs at frequency 2f1-f2 varies significantly with a stimulus frequency and can exhibit a quasi-periodic pattern, a feature termed a DPOAE fine structure. This distinctive characteristic has been generally accepted as a consequence of the interference between two DPOAE signals produced by two spatially separated groups of sensory hair cells, whose characteristic frequencies correspond to the …
