Dare We Speak Of It: The Teaching Of Evolution In Private Schools Of An Urban Middle Georgia Setting, Eric J. Thompson

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions, experience, and thinking of teachers at three private schools in Middle Georgia to determine how different private schools approach the teaching of evolution. For this project three private schools were included representing a secular, non-religiously affiliated private school, a Catholic affiliated private school, and an independent, Christian private school. The research was designed to answer one research question and three sub-questions. The primary research question was: How do private schools of the Middle Georgia area teach the theory of evolution? The three sub-questions were (2) Does the type of …

Physiological Response Of Elasmobrachs During Propofol Immersion, Matthew Levendosky Jan 2020

Physiological Response Of Elasmobrachs During Propofol Immersion, Matthew Levendosky

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Sensory experiments require anesthesia so the animal is immobilized, however fish anesthetics have shown to depress sensory responses. Newer anesthetics may offer similar anesthetic relief, but differ in means of action so sensory responses may be unaffected. Propofol has been used intravenously on small elasmobranchs but may provide prolonged effects if used as an immersion anesthetic. Objectives of this study were 1. Determine appropriate concentration of anesthetic to minimize induction and recovery for animals anesthetized at a surgical plane of anesthesia and 2. Measure physiological response of the pupil to light stimuli during anesthetic immersion. To address these objectives, I …

Health Behavior In International Student-Athletes, Alison Adams Jan 2020

Health Behavior In International Student-Athletes, Alison Adams

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Context: International student-athletes (ISAs) are a unique population that must overcome challenges associated both with being an international student as well as with being a student-athlete(Bradley, 2000; Bentzinger, 2016). These challenges include the increased likelihood of injury and the subsequent need for healthcare. Athletic trainers are responsible for providing and coordinating healthcare for student-athletes when it is needed. In order to provide high-quality care, it is important that they understand the unique values and experiences of each individual athlete (Unruh, 1998).

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine how cultural factors and past experience impact health behavior in …

Comparative Cognition And Nonhuman Individuality, Catia Correia Caeiro Jan 2020

Comparative Cognition And Nonhuman Individuality, Catia Correia Caeiro

Animal Sentience

Commentators Washington (2019) and Tiffin (2019) point out that the individual vs. collective dichotomy is much more complex than what is considered in the target article. This commentary will focus on why individuals are more important than collectives. Species differences in cognition and emotional processes and individuals’ feelings and experiences need to be taken into account.

Identification Of Odorant Receptor Genes In The Antennal Transcriptome Of The Common Eastern Fireflies, Photinus Pyralis, Hanh Tran Jan 2020

Identification Of Odorant Receptor Genes In The Antennal Transcriptome Of The Common Eastern Fireflies, Photinus Pyralis, Hanh Tran

Honors Theses

The insect odorant receptor, OR, gene family has been hypothesized to play a critical role in reproduction. Odorant receptor proteins, located on the olfactory sensory neuronal dendrites, detect odorant chemicals such as pheromones and then mediate key behaviors such as mate choice. Although olfaction is known to play a predominant role in sexual communication, there are still large numbers of olfactory genes that have not been studied in many insect species including fireflies. In this study, I investigated the sequencing data of one of the common eastern fireflies, Photinus pyralis (Coleoptera: Lampyridae). This firefly species is well known for their …

On The Question Of Thinking: A Study Of Heidegger's Later Philosophy, Shishir Budha Jan 2020

On The Question Of Thinking: A Study Of Heidegger's Later Philosophy, Shishir Budha

Honors Theses

This thesis explores the writings of the 20th-century German philosopher Martin Heidegger to understand what “thinking” is and how thinking needs to be undertaken. I examine Heidegger’s commitments to phenomenology in his early writings, his revaluation of the meaning of truth in traditional Western metaphysics, his criticism of calculative thinking and scientific rationality, his diagnosis of the human alienation and homelessness, and his evocation of the redemptive power of art and poetry through which we can find our place in the world. By questioning through all these themes, I attempt to trace Heidegger’s path towards a deeper and more original …

To Be Human, Layla S. Gordon Jan 2020

To Be Human, Layla S. Gordon

Honors Theses

I write in an attempt to convey the way I perceive the world and my place in it. I am not separate from the natural world but, as a human, deeply part of it. I want my readers to feel how, as much as any other species, our history and existence are part of the Earth. Sometimes in the built environment, especially large cities, I lose my connection to my roots and to my own person. In writing, I reclaim that connection and hope to restore it for my audience. Every human behavior is either conditioned or evolutionary. Either we …

Crystalline Architecture And Stratigraphy Of Coral Skeletal Density Banding: A Geobiological Record Of Changing Coral Reef Ecology, Kyle Fouke Jan 2020

Crystalline Architecture And Stratigraphy Of Coral Skeletal Density Banding: A Geobiological Record Of Changing Coral Reef Ecology, Kyle Fouke

Honors Theses

Coral skeletal density banding (CSDB), composed of alternating high density band (HDB) and low density band (LDB) layers that comprise the CaCO3 (aragonite) skeleton of scleractinian corals, are used as chronometers for global paleoclimatic reconstructions of sea surface temperature (SST). Scleractinian coral skeletons have been intensively studied for centuries with detail analysis of the macro- and microscale skeletal structure to establish taxonomic and evolutionary relationships of coral species, mechanisms of biomineralization, and seafloor physical, chemical and biological alteration (diagenesis) of the skeleton. This study is the first to determine the crystalline architecture of HDBs and CSDB stratigraphic …

The Theology Of John Donne's Body Politic, Carolyn P. Marino Jan 2020

The Theology Of John Donne's Body Politic, Carolyn P. Marino

Honors Theses

This thesis investigates John Donne’s body/soul dialectic, and discusses how this relationship extends towards both the individuated and communal body. The first chapter grounds Donne’s “Songs and Sonnets” in theology through his facilitation of the Platonic Ladder and the Great Chain of Being. It also gestures towards a shift in Donne’s poetry from subjectivity to intersubjectivity. Finally, it discusses Donne’s commissioned elegies, interrogating Renaissance ideas about the gendered soul, and expounding upon the impact of one person’s death on the communal body. The second chapter historically contextualizes ideas of martyrdom, suicide, and Donne’s term “self-homicide.” It discusses the content of …

Arkansas Biosciences Institute

Exosomes appear to be effective inter-cellular communicators delivering several types of molecules, such as proteins and RNAs, suggesting that they could influence neural stem cell (NSC) differentiation. Our RNA sequencing studies demonstrated that the RNAs related to cell proliferation and astrocyte differentiation were upregulated in human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC) when co-cultured with exosomes obtained from the culture medium of human glioma cells (U87). Metallothionein 3 and elastin genes, which are related to cell proliferation, increased 10 and 7.2 fold, respectively. Expression of genes for astrocyte differentiation, such as tumor growth factor alpha, induced protein 3 of the NOTCH1 family, …

A Single-Source Shortest Path Algorithm For Dynamic Graphs, Muteb Alshammari, Abdelmounaam Rezgui Jan 2020

A Single-Source Shortest Path Algorithm For Dynamic Graphs, Muteb Alshammari, Abdelmounaam Rezgui

Faculty Publications - Information Technology

Graphs are mathematical structures used in many applications. In recent years, many applications emerged that require the processing of large dynamic graphs where the graph’s structure and properties change constantly over time. Examples include social networks, communication networks, transportation networks, etc. One of the most challenging problems in large scale dynamic graphs is the single-source shortest path (SSSP) problem. Traditional solutions (based on Dijkstra’s algorithms) to the SSSP problem do not scale to large dynamic graphs with a high change frequency. In this paper, we propose an efficient SSSP algorithm for large dynamic graphs. We first present our algorithm and …

Exploring Our World: Biological And Archaeological Principles Of General Anthropology (Version 2.0), Lana Williams, Michael Callaghan

UCF Created OER Works

General Anthropology is an introduction to the discipline of anthropology that covers the four main sub-fields of biological anthropology, archaeology, linguistics, and cultural anthropology. While classified under a different name at schools outside of Florida, it is a common course in many university curricula. We were both excited and anxious to take on the challenge of creating an OER text, but once we decided on our goals, the mission became clearer. We had three goals in creating our OER content: namely, 1) to create a free and accessible text for students, 2) to supplement existing gaps in OER content that …

The Timing Of Childbirth: Does The Age Of First-Time Mothers Affect The Parental Gender Earnings Gap?, Anna Graves Jan 2020

The Timing Of Childbirth: Does The Age Of First-Time Mothers Affect The Parental Gender Earnings Gap?, Anna Graves

CMC Senior Theses

This paper assesses the impact the timing of first birth may have on the parental gender wage gap. Using data from the 2014 Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP), I use a pooled, cross-sectional sample of full-time parents in the United States labor force to examine the relationship between earnings and age at first birth for mothers and fathers and any relative difference that arises between the two. My findings indicate the presence of a parental gender wage gap, and that the timing of first birth can significantly impact parental wages. In addition, my results suggest that the timing …

Impacts Of Inappropriate Human Possession Of Wildlife On The Animal’S Well-Being, Anika Frink Jan 2020

Impacts Of Inappropriate Human Possession Of Wildlife On The Animal’S Well-Being, Anika Frink

Honors Theses and Capstones

Wildlife rehabilitation is the temporary intervention by humans on sick or injured wild animals, who would not otherwise survive, with the goal of release. Individual states have their own guidelines for how to become a licensed rehabilitator with extensive standards in place for how to keep such wildlife. The standards help to keep the animals wild for their eventual release and to avoid side effects of Inappropriate Human Possession or IHP. IHP is when an unlicensed person attempts to rehabilitate a wild animal or to keep it as a pet. This study examines the effects of IHP on wildlife patients …

Pfas Removals And Increases In The Effluent Of Thirteen New Hampshire Wastewater Treatment Facilities Due To The Effects Of Biological Treatment Processes, Zachary P. Harvell

Honors Theses and Capstones

PROPOSAL/ABSTRACT:

Perfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, are an emerging contaminant of concern in environmental engineering. This group of chemicals has been used by manufacturers since the 1940s due to their desirable waterproofing qualities. They also have a high chemical stability at high temperatures, which makes treatment difficult. A large variety of manufactured items contain PFAS, such as fabrics and apparel, non-stick items, and food wrappers. Recently, these compounds have come under question due to studies supporting harmful health effects, such as low birthweight, cancer, thyroid hormone disruption, and a weakened immune system. Due to their chemical structure, PFAS compounds are difficult …

Network Dynamics Reconstruction From Data, Deni̇z Eroğlu Jan 2020

Network Dynamics Reconstruction From Data, Deni̇z Eroğlu

Turkish Journal of Physics

We consider the problem of recovering the model of a complex network of interacting dynamical units from time series of observations. We focus on typical networks which exhibit heterogeneous degrees, i.e. where the number of connections varies widely across the network, and the coupling strength for a single interaction is small. In these networks, the behavior of each unit varies according to their connectivity. Under these mild assumptions, our method provides an effective network reconstruction of the network dynamics. The method is robust to a certain size of noise and only requires relatively short time series on the state variable …

Pharmacy

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is one of the most prevalent neurodegenerative disorders. While pathological hallmarks of this disorder are known, the exact cause of AD remains unclear. Quinazoline was found to be a promising scaffold for the design and development of Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors. In this study, we report the synthesis of 1'-methyl-3',4'-dihydro1'Hspiro[ cyclopentane-1, 2'-quinazoline] (4) in 73.3% yield. The structure of compound 4 was confirmed with GC-MS, 1H and 13C-NMR. Acetylcholine esterase inhibition was studied virtually with docking into AChE active site and suggests potential use of 4 as a promising scaffold for acetylcholine esterase inhibitor design which might be …

Congress Should Decline Ill-Advised Legislative Proposals Aimed At Evergreening Of Pharmaceutical Patent Protection, Christopher M. Holman

Faculty Works

There is a widespread perception that drug prices in the U.S. are much higher than they should be, and that the problem is only getting worse. Critics argue that the pharmaceutical industry is improperly gaming the system in a manner that takes advantage of legal loopholes and administrative limitations to the detriment of patients and third-party payers. Both houses of Congress responded in 2019 with a slew of hearings focused on pharmaceutical pricing, and dozens of bills have been introduced that would attempt to bring down the cost of drugs. Much of the discussion, and some of the proposed legislation, …

Bayesian Kinetic Modeling For Tracer-Based Metabolomic Data, Xu Zhang Jan 2020

Bayesian Kinetic Modeling For Tracer-Based Metabolomic Data, Xu Zhang

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

Kinetic modeling of the time dependence of metabolite concentrations including the unstable isotope labeled species is an important approach to simulate metabolic pathway dynamics. It is also essential for quantitative metabolic flux analysis using tracer data. However, as the metabolic networks are complex including extensive compartmentation and interconnections, the parameter estimation for enzymes that catalyze individual reactions needed for kinetic modeling is challenging. As the pa- rameter space is large and multi-dimensional while kinetic data are comparatively sparse, the estimation procedure (especially the point estimation methods) often en- counters multiple local maximum such that standard maximum likelihood methods may yield …

Statistical Intervals For Various Distributions Based On Different Inference Methods, Yixuan Zou Jan 2020

Statistical Intervals For Various Distributions Based On Different Inference Methods, Yixuan Zou

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

Statistical intervals (e.g., confidence, prediction, or tolerance) are widely used to quantify uncertainty, but complex settings can create challenges to obtain such intervals that possess the desired properties. My thesis will address diverse data settings and approaches that are shown empirically to have good performance. We first introduce a focused treatment on using a single-layer bootstrap calibration to improve the coverage probabilities of two-sided parametric tolerance intervals for non-normal distributions. We then turn to zero-inflated data, which are commonly found in, among other areas, pharmaceutical and quality control applications. However, the inference problem often becomes difficult in the presence of …
