Characterizing The Transport Of Parasitoid Wasp Genaspis Hookeri Venom Serca Into Host Drosophila Hemocytes, Christopher Lark Jan 2020

Characterizing The Transport Of Parasitoid Wasp Genaspis Hookeri Venom Serca Into Host Drosophila Hemocytes, Christopher Lark

Theses and Dissertations

The female endoparasitoid wasps introduce venom accompanied by an egg into the larval hosts’ body cavity during oviposition. The venom contains a mixture of proteins that exploit the host’s biological processes, such as, regulating gene expression, disrupting immune signaling pathways, or inducing immune cell death to give a decided advantage to the incipient wasp to develop unchallenged. Drosophila possesses a highly conserved innate immune response that recognizes and neutralizes foreign microbes and macroparasites. The venom of Ganaspis hookeri (strain G1) endoparasitoid wasp has co-evolved to suppresses the humoral phase Drosophila’s innate immune response by inhibiting Ca2+ bursts needed to induce …

Cultural Issues: Treating & Diagnosing Adhd, Noe Ramos, John Lowdermilk

Human Development and School Services Faculty Publications

ADHD refers to a diagnostic category applied to children exhibiting inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Approximately 1.2 to 2 million children are currently diagnosed with ADHD, making ADHD is considered to be the most common child psychiatric diagnosis in the United States. Public schools are constantly faced with the over-representation of students from minority populations in special education. Children with ADHD may be protected by three federal statutes: Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504), the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Part B (IDEA). Given that minorities constitute approximately …

Global And Regional Perspectives On Large-Landscape And Transboundary Conservation, Sanober R. Mirza Jan 2020

Global And Regional Perspectives On Large-Landscape And Transboundary Conservation, Sanober R. Mirza

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

With the growing pressure of environmental degradation and exploitation to social and ecological landscapes around the world, conservationists are looking for new approaches to address the complex nature of transboundary issues. Large-landscape conservation supports conservation and management of ecosystems, wildlife, and resources in a more holistic approach that extends beyond protected area boundaries. Transboundary conservation, a distinct form of large-landscape conservation, operates across political and spatial scales by involving two or more countries cooperating to protect a border resource or ecosystem. Though the recognition of large-landscape and transboundary conservation is growing, there is limited understanding of trends across these types …

Phenotypic Variation Of Partridge Pea (Chamaecrista Fasciculata) From Mississippi Persists In A Common Garden, Lisa E. Wallace, Mahboubeh Hosseinalizadeh-Nobarinezhad, Robert Coltharp Jan 2020

Phenotypic Variation Of Partridge Pea (Chamaecrista Fasciculata) From Mississippi Persists In A Common Garden, Lisa E. Wallace, Mahboubeh Hosseinalizadeh-Nobarinezhad, Robert Coltharp

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Intraspecific phenotypic variation occurs for many different reasons and understanding its basis has applications in taxonomy, ecology, and evolution. Chamaecrista fasciculata (partridge pea) is a widely distributed species with much phenotypic variation and varied interactions with other species in communities where it grows. Botanists have often noted that phenotypic variation in some traits of this species increases from north to south in the eastern United States. In this study, we grew seeds collected from five Mississippi populations in a common greenhouse environment to determine if the observed variation in leaf and stem traits is maintained in this environment. Interpopulation variation …

Standardized Short-Term Acute Heat Stress Assays Resolve Historical Differences In Coral Thermotolerance Across Microhabitat Reef Sites, Christian R. Voolstra, Carol Buitrago-López, Gabriela Perna, Anny Cárdenas, Benjamin C. C. Hume, Nils Rädecker, Daniel J. Barshis

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Coral bleaching is one of the main drivers of reef degradation. Most corals bleach and suffer mortality at just 1–2°C above their maximum monthly mean temperatures, but some species and genotypes resist or recover better than others. Here, we conducted a series of 18‐hr short‐term acute heat stress assays side‐by‐side with a 21‐day long‐term heat stress experiment to assess the ability of both approaches to resolve coral thermotolerance differences reflective of in situ reef temperature thresholds. Using a suite of physiological parameters (photosynthetic efficiency, coral whitening, chlorophyll a , host protein, algal symbiont counts, and algal type association), we assessed …

Enacting Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy In Diverse Secondary Classrooms: Teachers’ Perceptions, Preparation, Current Practices, And Challenges, Mariola Krol Jan 2020

Enacting Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy In Diverse Secondary Classrooms: Teachers’ Perceptions, Preparation, Current Practices, And Challenges, Mariola Krol

Theses & Dissertations

Due to an increasingly diverse student population in U.S. public schools, there has been a pertinent need for teachers to enact culturally sustaining pedagogy (CSP) when educating children from racially and linguistically diverse backgrounds. CSP is an asset-based approach that uses the cultural capital of communities of color to guide curriculum development, classroom climates, instructional strategies, and relationships with students. Although much is known about CSP, less work has explored how teachers enact CSP in diverse classrooms and how their background knowledge, lived experiences, pre-service preparation, and in-service professional learning may facilitate this process. Therefore, this case study examines the …

Ensemble Storytelling: Dramatic Television Seriality, The Melodramatic Mode, And Emotions, E. Deidre Pribram Ph.D. Jan 2020

Ensemble Storytelling: Dramatic Television Seriality, The Melodramatic Mode, And Emotions, E. Deidre Pribram Ph.D.

Communications: Faculty Publications

This chapter considers seriality in contemporary television dramas in light of arguments that most popular culture falls within melodrama as modality (to include legal shows, police and detective programs, westerns, and medical series), instead of narrow genres, such as soap operas. The recent success of fully serialized dramas is a noteworthy development, producing highly popular and highly regarded programming. The traditions of melodrama, including its deep commitment to the uses of emotionality, address story worlds and audiences in terms of social relations, in contrast to psychological realism’s more individualized and inward turning tendencies. “Ensemble Storytelling” explores three specific strategies available …

Objectives: This study aimed to identify carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacteria from clinical specimens of patients in Yola, Nigeria.

Methods: Routine clinical specimens were screened for the presence of carbapenem-resistant Gramnegative bacteria using chromogenic agar plates. Susceptibility of all presumptive isolates to carbapenems was tested by MIC and disk diffusion methods. Real-time PCR was used to test for the presence of carbapenemase genes.

Results: Screening of 1741 clinical specimens yielded 119 (6.8%) presumptive carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing confirmed carbapenem resistance in 105 of these isolates. New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase (blaNDM) gene was detected in 26 isolates and Verona integron-encoded metallo-β-lactamase (bla …

Intrasexual Competition: Effects Of Hormonal Contraceptives, Hannah Fergusson Jan 2020

Intrasexual Competition: Effects Of Hormonal Contraceptives, Hannah Fergusson

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Women’s intrasexual competition has been shown to fluctuate with fertility status, and in particular, with testosterone. It’s increasingly common that women take some form of hormonal contraceptives, especially the combined oral contraceptive (COC) pill which has been shown to decrease testosterone levels. Progesterone-only methods such as the implant or shot have been shown to have higher levels of free testosterone compared to the pill. The current study investigates the differences in intrasexual competition between pill users and progesterone-only users. 773 women took several surveys that obtained their information regarding menstrual cycle, contraceptive use, relationship status, and also took the Scale …

Species Distribution Models For Three Deep-Sea Coral And Sponge Taxa In The Southern California Bight, Nissa Kreidler Jan 2020

Species Distribution Models For Three Deep-Sea Coral And Sponge Taxa In The Southern California Bight, Nissa Kreidler

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Deep-Sea Coral and Sponge (DSCS) species are signature taxa of deep-water habitats, however understanding the ecological mechanisms that drive their geographic distributions can be difficult to uncover due to the challenges of surveying deep-water ecosystems. A recent study on benthic assemblages in Southern California revealed statistical associations between several DSCS and demersal fishes, many of which are important to management agencies due to commercial or conservation concerns. Maps that predict where these DSCS may occur are needed for the management and protection of these DSCS taxa and the fauna that rely on them for habitat. In this thesis, I develop …

Multiple Criteria Decision-Making Approach To Support Timber Transportation Planning – Case Study In Brazil, Marinna Lopes Ferreira Gomes Jan 2020

Multiple Criteria Decision-Making Approach To Support Timber Transportation Planning – Case Study In Brazil, Marinna Lopes Ferreira Gomes

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Timber transportation is one of the costliest activities for a forest company in Brazil and in many other countries, and it is a determining factor for the success of the forest enterprise. Thus, decision support tools are commonly used as methods to reduce these costs. The purpose of this study was to develop and analyze mathematical models to define the weekly timber transport schedule based on the monthly demands of the customers. The goal is to minimize the operational costs of forest transportation related to distances, timber freshness and road qualities. The decision process was made in two steps; the …

Impacts Of Ocean Acidification On Intertidal Macroalgae And Algivore Preference, Andrea Michelle Fieber Jan 2020

Impacts Of Ocean Acidification On Intertidal Macroalgae And Algivore Preference, Andrea Michelle Fieber

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Ocean acidification, a facet of global climate change, has the potential to induce changes in marine macroalgae that modify their existing interactions with algivorous invertebrates. In this study, I examined the effects of elevated carbon dioxide (pCO2) on several species of intertidal macroalgae (Phaeophyta, Rhodophyta) and evaluated the present-day and predicted future preferences of algivores (Pugettia producta and Tegula funebralis) by assessing grazing rates on untreated algal tissue and on algae exposed to high-pCO2 seawater. Both red and brown algae grew faster in elevated pCO2 than in ambient seawater, …

Spatial And Temporal Genetic Structure Of Winter-Run Steelhead (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) Returning To The Mad River, California, Steven R. Fong Jan 2020

Spatial And Temporal Genetic Structure Of Winter-Run Steelhead (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) Returning To The Mad River, California, Steven R. Fong

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Distinct populations of steelhead in the wild are in decline. The propagation of steelhead in hatcheries has been used to boost population numbers for recreational fisheries and for use in conservation. However, hatchery breeding practices of steelhead can result in changes in genetic structure. I investigated the genetic structure of winter-run steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) returning to the Mad River, California, where a hatchery has been used enhance production for recreational fisheries since 1971. Genetic variability in Mad River steelhead was evaluated using 96 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) among 4203 individuals, including the Mad River and nearby locations, and …

Multivariate Habitat-Based Predictive Modeling Of Three Demersal Rockfish Species In Central California, Georgia R. Martel Jan 2020

Multivariate Habitat-Based Predictive Modeling Of Three Demersal Rockfish Species In Central California, Georgia R. Martel

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Accurate, spatially explicit models of rockfish abundance are critical in implementing ecosystem-based management strategies and designating essential fish habitats and marine protected areas. Multibeam bathymetry methods and visual, non-extractive submersible transect surveys were combined to collect environmental variables and fish abundance data at three distinct sites within the study region. Zero-adjusted models were developed using habitat classification analyses of high-resolution (5 m) digital elevation models. Model accuracies were assessed by using a reserved subset of the original datasets. To demonstrate that a model’s predictive power was linked to its spatial origins, Mean Absolute Error and coefficient of determination values were …

Effects Of Gap Junction Blockage On Regenerating Body Segments Of Lumbriculus Variegatus, Monica K. Richmond Jan 2020

Effects Of Gap Junction Blockage On Regenerating Body Segments Of Lumbriculus Variegatus, Monica K. Richmond

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Lumbriculus variegatus is a freshwater annelid that is well known for its regenerative capacity. There are many different factors that affect regeneration in animals. Cell-to-cell communication is a key component of regeneration. Gap junctions are made up of proteins that create a channel that connects the cytoplasm of two cells. Many molecules and ions pass through the gap junctions that can affect regeneration. The purpose of this study was to determine if blocking gap junctions would have an impact on regenerating body segments of L. variegatus and what effects it would produce. L. variegatus was exposed to a known gap …

The Ginger, The Pin-Up, Or The Stepchild? Redheadedness As An Embodied Trope, Morgan Lee Thornburg Jan 2020

The Ginger, The Pin-Up, Or The Stepchild? Redheadedness As An Embodied Trope, Morgan Lee Thornburg

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The study of redheadedness has been largely neglected in the academic community and beyond. Besides a few outdated psychology studies, pop culture books, a handful of student theses, and one dissertation, there has been little investigation regarding how the tropes associated with redheadedness—namely, weakness and unattractiveness in men and unruliness and hypersexuality in women—become embodied. This project considers the way that such tropes are internalized in a variety of “texts”: Scott P. Harris’s documentary, Being Ginger; Marion Roach’s and Jacky Colliss Harvey’s personal narratives; and Tim Minchin’s song (and performance of) “Prejudice,” together with an interview he gave for …

(Carbon) Farming Our Way Out Of Climate Change, Alexia Brunet Marks Jan 2020

(Carbon) Farming Our Way Out Of Climate Change, Alexia Brunet Marks

Publications

Numerous climate-related emergencies highlight the challenges and urgency posed by climate change: the 2018 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Report, the Global Climate Action Summit in California and international student walkouts, to name a few. While the IPCC Report sent an urgent cry to reduce total emissions and to achieve specific results—45% reduction by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050—reductions need to be combined with capturing and storing atmospheric carbon dioxide. Scientific studies have shown that an annual increase of 0.4% of carbon stored in soils would make it possible to stop the present increase in atmospheric CO2.

Medicalization And The New Civil Rights, Craig Konnoth Jan 2020

Medicalization And The New Civil Rights, Craig Konnoth

Publications

In the last several decades, individuals have advanced civil rights claims that rely on the language of medicine. This Article is the first to define and defend these “medical civil rights” as a unified phenomenon.

Individuals have increasingly used the language of medicine to seek rights and benefits, often for conditions that would not have been cognizable even a few years ago. For example, litigants have claimed that discrimination against transgender individuals constitutes illegal disability discrimination. Others have argued that their fatigue constitutes chronic fatigue syndrome (which was, until recently, a novel and contested diagnosis) to obtain Social Security disability …

While The Water Is Stirring: Sojourner Truth As Proto-Agonist In The Fight For (Black) Women’S Rights, Lolita Buckner Inniss Jan 2020

While The Water Is Stirring: Sojourner Truth As Proto-Agonist In The Fight For (Black) Women’S Rights, Lolita Buckner Inniss

Publications

This Essay argues for a greater understanding of Sojourner Truth’s little-discussed role as a proto-agonist (a marginalized, long-suffering forerunner as opposed to a protagonist, a highly celebrated central character) in the process that led up to the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment. Though the Nineteenth Amendment failed to deliver on its promise of suffrage for black women immediately after its enactment, black women were stalwarts in the fight for the Amendment and for women’s rights more broadly, well before the ratification of the Amendment and for many years after its passage. Women’s rights in general, and black women’s rights in …

Intentions And Creative Insights: A Reinforcement Learning Study Of Creative Exploration In Problem-Solving, Thomas R. Colin Jan 2020

Intentions And Creative Insights: A Reinforcement Learning Study Of Creative Exploration In Problem-Solving, Thomas R. Colin

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Insight is perhaps the cognitive phenomenon most closely associated with creativity. People engaged in problem-solving sometimes experience a sudden transformation: they see the problem in a radically different manner, and simultaneously feel with great certainty that they have found the right solution. The change of problem representation is called "restructuring", and the affective changes associated with sudden progress are called the "Aha!" experience. Together, restructuring and the "Aha!" experience characterize insight. Reinforcement Learning is both a theory of biological learning and a subfield of machine learning. In its psychological and neuroscientific guise, it is used to model habit formation, and, …
