Effective Charter Schools: An Examination Of Operational, Financial, And Governance Practices As It Relates To The Renewal Of North Carolina Charter Schools, Shaunda Cooper
Doctor of Education Dissertations
North Carolina public charter schools are schools of choice authorized by the State Board of Education. North Carolina has nearly 200 charter schools, which are evaluated for effectiveness annually by a tool called the Performance Framework. However, to date, the evidence collected through the Performance Framework has not been offered to scholars and school leaders as a resource for achieving effective charter schools. Furthermore, research has not been conducted to evaluate a school’s performance in relation to its ability to complete a successful charter agreement renewal, which is the vein of a charter school’s existence. the study examined operational, governance, …
Parental Involvement In Middle School: The Parent's Perspective, Brittany D. Orange
Parental Involvement In Middle School: The Parent's Perspective, Brittany D. Orange
Doctor of Education Dissertations
Over the years, parental involvement has been studied from the perspectives of administrators and teachers. The purpose of this phenomenological study is to expound upon parental involvement from the parent’s perspective. The researcher’s goal is to understand the reasons why parents choose to get involved and the strategies they consider beneficial and a hindrance in facilitating their involvement. Parental involvement declines as students move through the K-12 system (Benner, Boyle & Sadler, 2016). As students move to middle school, the educational structure changes. Students go from having one teacher to multiple teachers, which presents a challenge to parents, as they …

Iris Segmentation Using Interactive Deep Learning, Mousumi Sardar, Subhashis Banerjee, Sushmita Mitra
Journal Articles
Automated iris segmentation is an important component of biometric identification. The role of artificial intelligence, particularly machine learning and deep learning, has been considerable in such automated delineation strategies. Although the use of deep learning is a promising approach in recent times, some of its challenges include its high computational requirement as well as availability of large annotated training data. In this scenario, interactive learning offers a cost-effective yet efficient alternative. We introduce an interactive variant of UNet for iris segmentation, including Squeeze Expand modules, to lower training time while improving storage efficiency through a reduction in the number of …
Science Or Status Quo? Disregard For A Defendant's Mental Illness In Tort Suits, Gabrielle Lindquist
Science Or Status Quo? Disregard For A Defendant's Mental Illness In Tort Suits, Gabrielle Lindquist
Washington Law Review Online
Mental illness is almost never considered when courts determine whether a defendant is liable for a tort. Nearly every United States jurisdiction—Washington state included—declines to offer a modified “reasonable person” standard for negligent tort defendants with mental illnesses or any form of mental illness-based affirmative defense for intentional tort defendants. There is much debate about whether tort law should evolve to accommodate defendants with mental illnesses. This Comment seeks to dive deeper into why that debate persists.
Although there are numerous justifications for this current state of tort law, the most common rationalizations given are twofold. First, that the primary …

Journal Articles
The quantification of scholarly performance has become an obvious necessity in many academic pursuits. Evaluation of research output is therefore an integral element of R&D institutions worldwide. However the quality-weighted dimensions of quantity are gaining momentum. Consequently, a good number of evaluative studies on publication productivity have been made available in scientometric literature. This paper critically scrutinises the literature on research productivity concerning scientific institutions (include universities and departments) in an informational context. It provides a thorough review to map the quantum of knowledge relating to ‘institutional research productivity’ correlating the Indian vista. It is, however, indicative to find the …
Balancing Act: How Does An Interdisciplinary Art Unit Affect Student Self-Efficacy In A Stem School?, Cindy Hankins-Koppel
Balancing Act: How Does An Interdisciplinary Art Unit Affect Student Self-Efficacy In A Stem School?, Cindy Hankins-Koppel
Ed.D. Dissertations
Abstract
Educators who use interdisciplinary methods in the classroom need consistent strategies to teach STEM content, and methods to help students increase self-efficacy. The focus on cognitive gains in STEM studies limits the number of students who pursue a foundation of STEM and 21st century skills to adapt to technological advancements for their futures. Student self-efficacy, perception of personal abilities, has become more critical as individuals need a range of academic and personal skills to adapt and persist in future endeavors. Social stereotypes and familial interests influence an individual's perception of their abilities to pursue a career in STEM from …

Myosin V-Mediated Transport Of Snc1 And Vps10 Toward The Trans-Golgi Network, Vy Nguyen, Jared Smothers, Paul Ballhorn, Sravya Kottapalli, Anh Ly, Julia Villarreal, Kyoungtae Kim
College of Natural and Applied Sciences
Retrieval of cargo proteins from the endosome towards the trans-Golgi network (TGN) is a crucial intracellular process for cellular homeostasis. Its dysfunction is associated with pathogenesis of Alzheimer and Parkinson's diseases. Myosin family proteins are cellular motors walking along actin filaments by utilizing the chemical energy from ATP hydrolysis, known to involve in pleiotropic cellular trafficking pathways. However, the question of whether myosins play a role in the trafficking of Snc1 and Vps10 has not been addressed yet. The present study assesses the potential roles of all five yeast myosins in the recycling of two membrane cargo, Snc1 and Vps10. …

The growth and development of forage plants is an amazing process. In some annual grasses such as cereal rye, plants can go from the late vegetative stage to fully-flowered in less than two weeks. Conversely, some perennial grasses like indiangrass can go from the vegetative stage to the elongation stage, then enter a quiescent phase for several weeks until adequate moisture is available which then moves plants into the flowering stages to complete the seed production process. Understanding the developmental morphology of forage plants is important for making good management decisions. Many such decisions involve timing the initiation or termination …

Fzr-1 Knockdown In C. Elegans To Test The Role Of Apc/CCdh1 In The Abbreviated Cell Cycle, Cassandra Rigor
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Cancer is characterized by defects in the cell cycle, the program cells use to replicate and divide. One important factor controlling the cell cycle is a protein complex known as the anaphase promoting complex (APC/CCdh1). This complex controls the canonical cell cycle, but whether it functions similarly in the abbreviated cell cycle, a non-canonical form of the cell cycle, is unknown. Neural stem cells and embryonic stem cells are examples of cell types that undergo this alternative form of the cell cycle, which is characterized by a shortened G1 phase. We hypothesized that APC/CCdh1 is not required …
Enhancing Learning With Primitive-Decomposed Cognitive Representations, Jamie C. Macbeth
Enhancing Learning With Primitive-Decomposed Cognitive Representations, Jamie C. Macbeth
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
This paper proposes work that applies insights from meaning representation systems for in-depth natural language understanding to representations for self-supervised learning systems, which show promise in developing complex, deeply-nested symbolic structures through self-motivated exploration of their environments. The core of the representation system transforms language inputs into language-free structures that are complex combinations of conceptual primitives, forming a substrate for human-like understanding and common-sense reasoning. We focus on decomposing representations of expectation, intention, planning, and decision-making which are essential to a self-motivated learner. These meaning representations may enhance learning by enabling a rich array of mappings between new experiences and …

Ideological asymmetries in social psychological research: rethinking the impact of political context on ideological epistemology.
Conclusion
In sum, while I agree with many of the arguments raised by Clark and Winegard (this issue), we should continue to de-bate the degree to which liberals and conservatives are equally motivated by tribalism, especially in the context of contemporary American politics. While there is no doubt that personal political views influence the questions that scientists deem important, I do wonder to what extent the ideological biases recently observed in the field of social psychology generalize to the social sciences as a whole (and …

Improving The Value Of The Coconut With Biotechnology, Fabian M. Dayrit, Quang Nguyen
Chemistry Faculty Publications
The fruit of the coconut tree is perhaps the most useful plant resource in the tropics. All parts of the coconut fruit have traditional uses that have been developed commercially in recent times (Foale 2003, Dayrit and Dayrit 2013). Due to its widespread household use, trade and industry statistics on coconut products reflect only part of the actual importance of the coconut. Today, coconut-based products have gone beyond the tropics and are consumed in many temperate countries and global regions such as Australia, China, Europe, North America, and the Middle East (Costello 2018). Coconut milk is the basic ingredient of …

Evolutionary Analyses Of Phylum Chaetognatha Based On Mitochondrial Cytochromeoxidase I Gene, Sam Peter, Manojkumar Bhaskaran Nair, Devika Pillai
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Chaetognaths (arrow worms) are an enigmatic group of transparent planktonic invertebrates and play an important role in the marine food web. Their morphological and developmental features have raised extensive debates since the discovery of the phylum in the 18th century. Uncertainty in the phylogenetic placement of certain chaetognath species still exists and is puzzling many scientists who have tried to clarify this task. Turkish Journal of Zoology
In this study, the first case of aberrant coloration, namely xanthochroism or xanthism, in the thinlip grey mullet, Chelon ramada (Teleostei: Mugilidae), was reported. The specimen was caught by a purse seiner in November 2019, in İzmir Bay, in the Aegean Sea, and was a female, with mature ovaries, which indicated that it had been in spawning migration or activity on the sampling date.
