Maize (Zea mays L.) is an important cereal crop around the globe. Scarcity of water is one of the major abiotic factors reducing yields in this crop. The development of maize varieties with stress-tolerant traits is time-consuming and laborious work. There is a strong need to develop techniques that could have the effect of reducing irrigation requirements and mitigating waterstress conditions. Biopriming (seed priming with bacterial inoculation) is a newly emerging, simple, and easily adaptable strategy to mitigate drought stress for enhanced crop production. The current trial was executed using a randomized complete block design with factorial arrangements during the …

The Effects Of Wheatgrass Length On Antioxidant Activity And Total Phenolic Content Inwheatgrass (Triticum Spp.), Yusuf Şavşatli

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This study was carried out with the aim of determining the effects of wheatgrass lengths on antioxidant activity and total phenolic content of wheatgrass belonging to different cultivars (Triticum spp.) in laboratory conditions in 2017. When the wheat seedlings grown in plastic containers under soilless conditions reached three levels of wheatgrass length (5-6, 8-9, and 11-12 cm), the seedlings were cut from the root collar and dried in an oven. As a result of analysis of the dried material, it was found that the cut lengths of wheatgrass significantly (P < 0.01) affected antioxidant activity and total phenolic content of wheatgrass. Ten wheat cultivars belonging to Triticum monococcum L., T. durum L., and T. aestivum L. were used. Wheatgrass was cut at three lengths (5-6, 8-9, and 11-12 cm). It was found that the wheatgrass lengths had a significant (P < 0.01) effect on antioxidant and total phenolic content of wheatgrass. In addition, in terms of these traits, the most suitable wheatgrass length for cutting changed depending on the wheat species and also cultivars. The highest (P < 0.01) antioxidant activity and total phenolic content (TPC) were also determined at three wheatgrass lengths in cultivar Sarıbaşak. The average values obtained from Sarıbaşak wheatgrass were 31.0% for DPPH-free radical scavenging activity and 51.6 mg GAE-1 dry weight for TPC. The results of the analysis suggested that Sarıbaşak is the most promising cultivar in terms of both antioxidant activity and TPC in wheatgrass.

Prkag2 Gene Expression Is Elevated And Its Protein Levels Are Associated With Increased Amyloid-Β Accumulation In The Alzheimer’S Disease Brain, Prashant Bharadwaj, Ralph Martins

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Increased amyloid-β (Aβ) accumulation associated with abnormal autophagy-lysosomal activity and nutrient kinase dysregulation are common features in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) brain. Recent studies have identified PRKAG2 and TIPRL genes that control nutrient kinase regulated autophagy, and here we determined if their expression is altered in postmortem AD brains. Gene and protein expression of TIPRL were unchanged. However, gene expression of PRKAG2 was increased 3-fold and its protein levels positively correlated with Aβ accumulation in the AD brain. In summary, our findings suggest that increased PRKAG2 is an important contributing factor to Aβ accumulation in the AD brain.

Supplemental Seeding And Seed Predation In A Newly Planted Tallgrass Prairie, Isabella Betzer Jan 2020

Supplemental Seeding And Seed Predation In A Newly Planted Tallgrass Prairie, Isabella Betzer

Honors Program Theses

The Iowa around today looks vastly different from the Iowa that was originally around. What once used to house vast tallgrass prairies is now home to about 0.1% of what was originally here (Smith 1998). However, conservationists have been working hard to restore even a fraction of what originally here despite high costs and low yields in restoration prairies. Recently experiments have been done on the use of sacrificial seed to potentially increase plant yield in restoration with successful results. This study was done to further research the effects of supplemental seeding on seed predation and if seedling emergence would …

Genetic Variation Within A Broadly Distributed Chewing Louse Genus (Thomomydoecus), Clarissa Elizabeth Bruns Jan 2020

Genetic Variation Within A Broadly Distributed Chewing Louse Genus (Thomomydoecus), Clarissa Elizabeth Bruns

Honors Program Theses

No broad study has been conducted to examine the genetics of Thomomydoecus species and their patterns of geographic variation. Chewing lice and their parasite-host relationships with pocket gophers have been studied as a key example of cophylogeny (Demastes et al., 2012). Despite this, genetic data on interspecific and intraspecific variation in Thomomydoecus is unexplored, and prior studies consisted within the narrow frame of one complex or species and its relative host gopher. This project collected, and analyzed genetic data, then generated phylogenetic trees. Many of the existing relationships between Thomomydoecus species was confirmed, and there were a number of unexpected …

Seasonal Productivity Drives Aggregations Of Killer Whales And Other Cetaceans Over Submarine Canyons Of The Bremer Sub-Basin, South-Western Australia, Chandra Salgado Kent, Phil Bouchet, Rebecca Wellard, Iain Parnum, Leila Fouda, Christine Erbe

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

© 2020 Journal Compilation Cetaceans are iconic predators that serve as important indicators of marine ecosystem health. The Bremer Sub-Basin, south-western Australia, supports a diverse cetacean community including the largest documented aggregation of killer whales (Orcinus orca) in Australian waters. Knowledge of cetacean distributions is critical for managing the area's thriving ecotourism industry, yet is largely sporadic. Here we combined aerial with opportunistic ship-borne surveys during 2015-2017 to describe the occurrence of multiple cetacean species on a regional scale. We used generalised estimating equations to model variation in killer whale relative density as a function of both static and dynamic …

When Less Is More: The Downside Of Customer Knowledge Sharing In New Product Development Teams, Yihui Tang, Datelina Marinova

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Despite the common belief that knowledge sharing in new product development (NPD) teams is beneficial, empirical findings are mixed. We adopt a microfoundations perspective and draw from the socio-cognitive theory to propose a model that theorizes a nonlinear effect of customer knowledge sharing behaviors on NPD performance. In particular, we identify the underlying mechanism through which shared common customer knowledge and perceived diagnostic value shape the nonlinear returns to customer knowledge sharing behaviors. In Study 1, data from the biotechnology industry provide support for the hypothesis that customer knowledge sharing behaviors in NPD teams have an inverted U-shaped relationship with …

Role Of Geometric Shape In Chiral Optics, Philipp Gutsche, Xavier Garcia-Santiago, Philipp Immanuel Schneider, Kevin M. Mcpeak, Manuel Nieto-Vesperinas, Sven Burger

Faculty Publications

The distinction of chiral and mirror symmetric objects is straightforward from a geometrical point of view. Since the biological as well as the optical activity of molecules strongly depend on their handedness, chirality has recently attracted high interest in the field of nano-optics. Various aspects of associated phenomena including the influences of internal and external degrees of freedom on the optical response have been discussed. Here, we propose a constructive method to evaluate the possibility of observing any chiral response from an optical scatterer. Based on solely the T-matrix of one enantiomer, planes of minimal chiral response are located and …
