Gymnosperm Species Richness Patterns Along The Elevational Gradient And Its Comparison With Other Plant Taxonomic Groups In The Himalayas, Suresh C. Subedi, Khem Raj Bhattarai, Timothy M. Perez, Jay P. Sah
Faculty Publications - Biological Sciences
Phylogenetic constraints on ecophysiological adaptations and specific resource requirements are likely to explain why some taxonomic and functional groups exhibit different richness patterns along climatic gradients. We used interpolated species elevational distribution data and climatic data to describe gymnosperm species richness variation along elevational and climatic gradients in the Himalayas. We compared the climatic and elevational distributions of gymnosperms to those previously found for bryophytes, ferns, and angiosperm tree lineages to understand the respective drivers of species richness. Our study location was divided into three regions: Eastern; Central; and Western Himalayas. In each region, the sum of gymnosperm species richness …

Stable behavioral traits (temperament, personality) often predict health outcomes. Temperament-specific differences in immune function could explain temperament-specific health outcomes, however, we have limited information on whether immune function varies by personality. In the present study, we examined the relationship between a basic behavioral trait (behavioral-inhibition vs. non-inhibition) and two immune responses (innate inflammation and delayed-type hypersensitivity, DTH) in a rodent model. In humans, behavioral inhibition (fearful temperament) is associated with altered stress physiology and allergies. In laboratory rats, the trait is associated with elevated glucocorticoid production. We hypothesized that behavioral inhibition is associated with glucocorticoid resistance and dampened T-helper 1 …
Ashes Of Our Fathers: Racist Monuments And The Tribal Right, Dan Demetriou
Ashes Of Our Fathers: Racist Monuments And The Tribal Right, Dan Demetriou
Philosophy Publications
In this chapter Demetriou sketches a rightist approach to monumentary policy in a diverse polity beleaguered by old ethnic grievances. He begins by noting the importance of tribalism, memorialization, and social trust. He then suggests a policy which 1) gradually narrows the gap between peoples in the heritage landscape, 2) conserves all but the most offensive of the least beloved racist monuments, 3) avoids recrimination (i.e., “keeps it positive”) and eschews ideological commentary in new monuments or revisions to old ones, 4) as much as politically feasible, recognizes only the offense of willing tribemates, and 5) responds to aesthetic and …
"Good Job, But Bulgarian": Identifying "Bulgarian-Ness" Through Cultural Discourse Analysis, Nadezhda Sotirova
"Good Job, But Bulgarian": Identifying "Bulgarian-Ness" Through Cultural Discourse Analysis, Nadezhda Sotirova
Communication, Media, and Rhetoric Publications
By using cultural discourse analysis and ethnography, naturally occurring talk and interviews were examined for local constructions of “Bulgarian-ness” in order to formulate explicit and implicit cultural propositions about being “Bulgarian,” and cultural premises about being (“Bulgarian-ness” as problematic) and emotion (anger, frustration) as connected. This article illustrates the notion of the phrase as a local cultural symbol within Bulgarian discourse that evokes deep cultural meanings for a way of being (“Bulgarian-ness” and the West/East dichotomy), emotions (frustration, hopelessness), and a social world (the “Bulgarian situation”) as continuously negotiated in relation to conceptualizations of “Balkanism.”

The Fate And Removal Of Pharmaceuticals And Personal Care Products Within Wastewater Treatment Facilities Discharging Upstream From The Great Bay Estuary, Alexandria Christine Hidrovo
The Fate And Removal Of Pharmaceuticals And Personal Care Products Within Wastewater Treatment Facilities Discharging Upstream From The Great Bay Estuary, Alexandria Christine Hidrovo
Master's Theses and Capstones
Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are contaminants of emerging concern that derive primarily from combined sewer overflows and discharges from industrial and municipal wastewater treatment facilities (WWTFs). One major concern of PPCPs in surface water is their potential toxicity to sensitive receptors, such as aquatic organisms, at trace concentrations due to their incomplete removal from conventional wastewater treatment technologies. However, most PPCP removal occurs during secondary treatment through biodegradation by a diverse aerobic microbial community (activated sludge). Additionally, studies have shown secondary treatment designs that effectively remove nutrients tend to exhibit a positive relationship on PPCP removal. In this …

The Analysis Of College Students Knowledge, Attitudes. Behaviors, And Perceptions Concerning Sexually Transmitted Infections, Ambrosia Roberts
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The purpose of this study was to further research, more in-depth, college student's attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors concerning sexually transmitted infections and unsafe sexual practices using the Health Belief Model as a framework. By utilizing an electronic survey and social media a non-probability convenience sample of 167 students was assessed. This study was given to undergraduate and graduate students at a midwestern college campus and was intended to evaluate college student's knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, and perceptions concerning sexually transmitted infections. Two major findings were that less than half of the participants were tested for STI's yearly; and there was no …
Association Of Working Therapeutic Alliance And Psychopathy In Civilly-Confined Sex Offenders, Kearie Ann Newman
Association Of Working Therapeutic Alliance And Psychopathy In Civilly-Confined Sex Offenders, Kearie Ann Newman
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Over the past decade, researchers have focused attention on the therapeutic alliance (TA) and its impact in treatment outcomes. The literature on TA has been focused primarily on its impact on the client’s participation, the accomplishment of goals, and treatment completion. However, very little of this research includes individuals who have psychopathy. Therefore, the purpose of this quantitative survey study was to explore the relation between the level of psychopathy (high versus low) and TA ratings of 16 therapists and 64 clients in the population of convicted civilly-confined male sex offenders. Bordin’s theory grounded the study. Data were gathered from …
The Long-Term Biopsychosocial Effects Of Children Reared In Blended Families, Kerene T. Brown
The Long-Term Biopsychosocial Effects Of Children Reared In Blended Families, Kerene T. Brown
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Family dynamics have experienced an immense transformation in the last 4 decades. Children are less likely to live in a 2-parent household with parents that are both biologically related to them due to various factors. Blended families (especially the children) face many adversities during the initial stages of formation and rarely receive specialized intervention when compared to nuclear families. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to understand the long-term biopsychosocial effects experienced by young adults who lived in a blended family household. In addition, what services or interventions were offered to newly established blended family systems were also …
Rural Teacher Perceptions Of Trauma On Youth, Tracey Faye Whetstone
Rural Teacher Perceptions Of Trauma On Youth, Tracey Faye Whetstone
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This study was an exploration of teacher experiences and perceptions in working with trauma-exposed students in a rural school district and what is needed to best support student academic and psychosocial success. The substantial long-term effects of trauma exposure cause many children to face behavioral and academic challenges in school, yet teachers are often unaware or untrained concerning trauma-informed care. There is little research regarding how teacher experiences with trauma-exposed students are perceived. This study explored teacher insight with rural trauma-exposed youth in terms of awareness and how they narrate these experiences in response to trauma-related issues. Grounded in trauma …
Parents’ Perceptions Of Healthcare Influences On Their Decisions To Vaccinate Their Children, Patricia Frances Badiola Harris
Parents’ Perceptions Of Healthcare Influences On Their Decisions To Vaccinate Their Children, Patricia Frances Badiola Harris
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Declining immunization rates are associated with higher incidents of vaccine-preventable diseases. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological inquiry was to explore the perceptions of vaccine-hesitant parents regarding their healthcare experiences. Ajzen and Fishbein‘s theory of reasoned actions and its key concepts (the intention to perform behaviors, attitudes, subjective norms, and external variables) was used as a framework to understand influences on parents' decisions to vaccinate their children. The research questions for the study examined the healthcare experiences of vaccine-hesitant parents, how these experiences influenced their decisions to vaccinate their children, and how this group perceived the current strategies promoting vaccinations …
Exploring The Dual Role Of Consumer And Provider In Substance Use Peer Support Workers, Christian Scannell
Exploring The Dual Role Of Consumer And Provider In Substance Use Peer Support Workers, Christian Scannell
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Peer support is built upon the premise that shared life experiences will benefit both the helper and the receiver. In the substance abuse field, this relationship has been linked to an increase in practical knowledge, empowerment, hope, and community connectedness. However, the research on peer support is primarily geared toward the effectiveness of the intervention for the consumer. Less is known about the role of this relationship in the recovery of the workers themselves. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to explore the experience of recovery in substance abuse peer support workers. A recovery framework and the helper …

Hypertensive Self Care: An Educational Tool For Advanced Practice Nurses, Kelisia Burks Mckay
Hypertensive Self Care: An Educational Tool For Advanced Practice Nurses, Kelisia Burks Mckay
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Poorly controlled hypertension is a serious public health problem. Persons with high blood pressure are required to perform a variety of self-care behaviors. Advance practice nurses can improve health outcomes for hypertensive patients when they provide self-care education along with prescribing appropriate medications needed to treat high blood pressure. The purpose of this study was to educate rural advance practice nurses about hypertension medication and self-care management using the Hypertension Self-Care Activity Level Effects (H-SCALE) and the 8th National Joint Committee (JNC- 8) hypertensive guidelines. Twelve primary care advanced practices nurses (APN's) participated in an educational presentation that included pre …
