Improvements To Iterated Local Search For Microaggregation, Tracy Bierman Jan 2020

Improvements To Iterated Local Search For Microaggregation, Tracy Bierman

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Microaggregation is a disclosure control method that uses k-anonymity to protect confidentiality in microdata while seeking minimal information loss. The problem is NP-hard. Iterated local search for microaggregation (ILSM) is an effective metaheuristic algorithm that consistently identifies better quality solutions than extant microaggregation methods. The present work presents improvements to local search, the perturbation operations and acceptance criterion within ILSM.

The first, ILSMC, targets changed clusters within local search (LS) to avoid vast numbers of comparison tests, significantly reducing execution times. Second, a new probability distribution yields a better perturbation operator for most cases, significantly reducing the number of iterations …

Sns As An Educational Tool: Effect On Academic Performance And Learners’ Perceptions, Nawwaf Mohssen Altalhi Jan 2020

Sns As An Educational Tool: Effect On Academic Performance And Learners’ Perceptions, Nawwaf Mohssen Altalhi

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

With Social Networking Sites (SNSs) being extensively used by students, there has been extensive research in relation to their ability to enhance students’ academic performance in various learning environments, although the advent of research on online learning is a recent development.

Studies regarding the use of SNSs indicated that there was a negative relationship between students’ use of SNSs and students’ academic performance. However, it is unknown whether the implementation of an instructional training course utilizing SNSs as an educational tool might lead to improvements in students’ academic performance. Many students have admitted to not knowing how to properly use …

A Hierarchical Temporal Memory Sequence Classifier For Streaming Data, Jeffrey Barnett Jan 2020

A Hierarchical Temporal Memory Sequence Classifier For Streaming Data, Jeffrey Barnett

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Real-world data streams often contain concept drift and noise. Additionally, it is often the case that due to their very nature, these real-world data streams also include temporal dependencies between data. Classifying data streams with one or more of these characteristics is exceptionally challenging. Classification of data within data streams is currently the primary focus of research efforts in many fields (i.e., intrusion detection, data mining, machine learning). Hierarchical Temporal Memory (HTM) is a type of sequence memory that exhibits some of the predictive and anomaly detection properties of the neocortex. HTM algorithms conduct training through exposure to a stream …

Protecting The Protector: Mapping The Key Terrain That Supports The Continuous Monitoring Mission Of A Cloud Cybersecurity Service Provider, Chris Bush

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Key terrain is a concept that is relevant to warfare, military strategy, and tactics. A good general maps out terrain to identify key areas to protect in support of a mission (i.e., a bridge allowing for mobility of supplies and reinforcements). Effective ways to map terrain in Cyberspace (KT-C) has been an area of interest for researchers in Cybersecurity ever since the Department of Defense designated Cyberspace as a warfighting domain. The mapping of KT-C for a mission is accomplished by putting forth efforts to understand and document a mission's dependence on Cyberspace and cyber assets. A cloud Cybersecurity Service …

The Great Turning: A Call For Systems-Thinkers, Gabriella M. Demarce

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

David Orr, in an article on ecological intelligence reminds us that the modern world was shaped by people who did not understand that our social and economic systems could not coexist with the rest of the biological or natural systems on Earth (Orr, 1994). My research is rooted in Orr’s argument and discovering ways to shift this degrading paradigm. With my belief in the power of education in empowering youth and my background in environmental and climate change studies, I see a future in great need of people who holistically understand the functions of all types of systems and can …

Audre Lorde & The Ontology Of Desire, Lauren Koenig Jan 2020

Audre Lorde & The Ontology Of Desire, Lauren Koenig

Scripps Senior Theses

This thesis advances an understanding of the ontological impact of Western conceptions of sexuality guided by a model of reparative reading as outlined by Eve Kosofosky Sedgwick. Rather than multiply and magnify anti-patriarchal invective, I use deconstructive techniques as a means of analyzing selections from the poetry of Audre Lorde (including “Bloodbirth,” “Making it,” “Pirouette,” and “Therapy”) in order to explore how a consideration of lesbian sexuality can inform an understanding of the more widespread conflation between writing, creation, and birth of the self.

The investigation centers on a variety of paradoxes encountered in the felt sense-oriented language of desire …

Aging Induces B Cell Defects And Decreased Antibody Responses To Influenza Infection And Vaccination, Daniela Frasca, Bonnie B. Blomberg Jan 2020

Aging Induces B Cell Defects And Decreased Antibody Responses To Influenza Infection And Vaccination, Daniela Frasca, Bonnie B. Blomberg

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Background: Aging is characterized by a progressive decline in the capacity of the immune system to fight influenza virus infection and to respond to vaccination. Among the several factors involved, in addition to increased frailty and high-risk conditions, the age-associated decrease in cellular and humoral immune responses plays a relevant role. This is in large part due to inflammaging, the chronic low-grade inflammatory status of the elderly, associated with intrinsic inflammation of the immune cells and decreased immune function.

Results: Aging is usually associated with reduced influenza virus-specific and influenza vaccine-specific antibody responses but some elderly individuals with higher pre-exposure …

Gut Microbiome Analysis In Morphine Exposure And Naltrexone-Induced Withdrawal, Nick Rapp, Sean O'Sullivan, James Schwaber

Phase 1

Introduction and Objectives: Relatively little is understood about the underlying physiological changes that occur in the withdrawal state of opiate users. Research on the effects of alcohol withdrawal on the Gut-brain axis (GBA) has revealed shifts in relative numbers of specific bacterial species that correlate with increased central nervous system (CNS) inflammation via neurological crosstalk. The purpose of this research was to determine if similar shifts in the relative abundance of bacterial populations occur in the opiate withdrawal state.

Methods: Fourteen rats were randomized into four groups. Control and experimental rats were administered 75 mg morphine pellets or placebo (sugar) …

Assessment Of The Composition And Biologic Activity Of Platelet Rich Plasma And Its Relationship To Clinical Outcomes In Patients With Knee Osteoarthritis, Daniel Nemirov, Bijan Dehghani, Habib Zahir, Xiaoning Yuan, Christine Kim, Reyna Bhandhari, Patrick Fava, Yurii Chinenov, Joseph Nguyen, Laura Donlin, Brian Halpern, Scott Rodeo, Miguel Otero Jan 2020

Assessment Of The Composition And Biologic Activity Of Platelet Rich Plasma And Its Relationship To Clinical Outcomes In Patients With Knee Osteoarthritis, Daniel Nemirov, Bijan Dehghani, Habib Zahir, Xiaoning Yuan, Christine Kim, Reyna Bhandhari, Patrick Fava, Yurii Chinenov, Joseph Nguyen, Laura Donlin, Brian Halpern, Scott Rodeo, Miguel Otero

Phase 1

Recent studies suggest positive clinical outcomes associated with platelet-rich-plasma (PRP) administration to treat knee osteoarthritis (OA). However, the results remain inconclusive in part because of the high variability in PRP preparations and the limited information regarding the relevant biologically active components of PRP. We hypothesize that the variability in clinical response is driven by the heterogeneous composition of PRP. In this study we evaluated the composition and biological activity of PRP and further correlated our findings to clinical outcomes in patients receiving intra-articular injections for knee OA. After IRB approval and patient consent, we enrolled 51 patients (mean age: 57.9 …

Characterizing The Diverse Cells That Associate With The Developing Commissures Of The Zebrafish Forebrain, Jake Schnabl, M.P.H Litz, Caitlin Schneider, N. Penkofflidbeck, Sarah Bashiruddin, M. S. Schwartz, Kristin Alligood, Michael Barresi

Zebrafish Forebrain Cellular Characterization

During embryonic development of bilateral organisms, neurons send axons across the midline at specific points to connect the two halves of the nervous system with a commissure. Little is known about the cells at the midline that facilitate this tightly regulated process. We exploit the con served process of vertebrate embryonic development in the zebrafish model system to elucidate the identity of cells at the midline that may facilitate postoptic (POC) and anterior commissure (AC) development. We have discovered that three differentgfap+ astroglial cell morphologies persist in contact with pathfinding axons throughout commissure formation. Similarly, olig2+ progenitor cells occupy delineated …

Investigating The Role Of The 5’Utr Region Of Tmev In Viral Myocarditis, Maryam Alqahtani Jan 2020

Investigating The Role Of The 5’Utr Region Of Tmev In Viral Myocarditis, Maryam Alqahtani

Master's Theses

Viral myocarditis is described as the inflammation of the heart muscle, and it is a common condition that can affect the heart. It is estimated that myocarditis causes 1.5 million deaths annually. In mice, Theiler’s encephalomyelitis virus (TMEV) is a common cause of myocarditis. This non-attenuated virus can be used in a cell culture model system to study viral replication and persistence. These processes have been linked to the severity of the heart damage, which in most clinical scenarios, can lead to dilated cardiomyopathy. The 5’ untranslated region (5‘UTR) found in the viral genome of TMEV is well known to …

Structure Of An Inner Membrane Protein Required For Phopq-Regulated Increases In Outer Membrane Cardiolipin, Junping Fan, Erik M. Petersen, Thomas R. Hinds, Ning Zheng, Samuel I. Miller

ETSU Faculty Works

The Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium PhoPQ two-component system is activated within the intracellular phagosome environment, where it promotes remodeling of the outer membrane and resistance to innate immune antimicrobial peptides. Maintenance of the PhoPQ-regulated outer membrane barrier requires PbgA, an inner membrane protein with a transmembrane domain essential for growth, and a periplasmic domain required for PhoPQ-activated increases in outer membrane cardiolipin. Here, we report the crystal structure of cardiolipin-bound PbgA, adopting a novel transmembrane fold that features a cardiolipin binding site in close proximity to a long and deep cleft spanning the lipid bilayer. The end of …

A Kunitz-type trypsin inhibitor protein has been purified and characterized from seeds of Acacia nilotica L. LC-MS/MS analysis of Acacia nilotica trypsin inhibitor (AnTI) provided the N-terminal fragment of 11 amino acids which yielded 100% identity with already reported Kunitz-type trypsin inhibitor protein of Acacia confusa (AcTI) in UniProtKB database search. SDS-PAGE showed a single band of ~21 kDa under nonreduced condition and appearance of a daughter band (17 kDa) in the presence of ß-mercaptoethanol indicating the presence of interchain disulfide linkage typical for Kunitz-type trypsin inhibitors. AnTI was purified from seed extract by using a combination of anion exchange …

Turkish Journal of Botany

Ferulic acid (FA; 3-methoxy-4-hydroxycinnamic acid) can eliminate stress-induced damage because of its ability to induce antioxidant activity under stress. The aim of this study was to identify the effects of FA on water status, antioxidant system, and lipid peroxidation in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) roots exposed to boron (B) stress. Plants were grown in hydroponic culture containing the combination or alone form of 25-75 µM FA and 4-8 mM B. Stress significantly decreased growth (RGR), water content (RWC), proline content (Pro), and osmotic potential (YP). However, FA alleviated the decrease in RGR, RWC, and Pro content. Compared to the control …

Presumed Consent And Priority Allocation Systems For Organ Donation Legislation In The United States: Making The Moral Case, Ann K. Shapiro, Peter A. Depergola Ii Jan 2020

Presumed Consent And Priority Allocation Systems For Organ Donation Legislation In The United States: Making The Moral Case, Ann K. Shapiro, Peter A. Depergola Ii

Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

In recent decades, developed nations, such as the United States, have seen the gap between the demand and the supply of transplantable organs widen, despite national campaigns intended to promote donor registration. This organ shortage crisis has deprived thousands of a basic quality of life and has caused a substantial increase in the cost of alternative medical care such as dialysis. In an attempt to address the shortage, some countries have instituted explicit “opt-out” and “priority allocation” policies that operate under the principle of presumed consent and offer higher priority on transplantation lists to registered donors. This paper seeks to …
