Toward An Interspecies Right To Breastfeed, Mathilde Cohen
Toward An Interspecies Right To Breastfeed, Mathilde Cohen
Animal Law Review
Milk is young mammals’ primary food. Yet, lactating animals raised for their milk, such as cows and goats, are subject to extreme forms of violence and control preventing them from breastfeeding their own young. Numerous human parents also lack the legal, economic, social, and emotional support they need to nurse their children. At one level, the situation of humans and that of farmed animals is incommensurable in that the latter’s reproductive and lactating capacity is typically exploited and rewarded by death when unprofitable. At another level, lactating animals of all species are in a related social status. Lactating parents, typically …

A Quantitative Study Of Denver's Breed-Specific Legislation, Sloane M. Hawes, Devrim Ikizler, Katy Loughney, Aurora Temple Barnes Esq., Justin F. Marceau, Philip Tedeschi, Kevin N. Morris
Animal Law Review
In August of 1989, the City and County of Denver, Colorado enacted legislation that prohibits the presence of all ‘pit bull-type dogs’ (PBTDs) within the city limits. In Denver, PBTDs are defined as: American pit bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, or Staffordshire bull terrier. In the thirty years the ‘pit bull ban’ has been in place, the City and County of Denver and its animal control agency, Denver Animal Protection, have committed substantial resources to removing PBTDs from the community, including patrolling communities and responding to complaints made by neighbors, conducting thorough breed evaluations of suspected PBTDs, and kenneling PBTDs …

Protecting Genetic Identity With The Right Of Publicity: Applying California's Common Law Right Of Publicity To Direct-To-Consumer Genetic Testing, Steven A. Fisher
American University Law Review
The completion of the Human Genome Project has and will continue to spur extraordinary innovation in the realm of genetics. One such innovation was the rise of commercial, direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic testing, which allows consumers to learn about their origin, family, and disease predisposition, all by paying a modest sum and providing a tube of saliva. But the hidden cost is more severe: forfeiture of control over one’s genetic identity. DTC genetic companies have exploited this vulnerability, entering into data-sharing agreements worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
This Comment argues that DTC genetic testing companies who sell and share consumers’ …

One Door Opening Is Another Person’S Insult: Examining Benevolently Sexist Behaviors And Attitudes In American Males, Rachael Turner, Rachael Turner
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
This study explores Ambivalent Sexism Theory and takes a closer look at the correlation between the behaviors and attitudes that surround it. In this study 133 male participants completed surveys questioning their acceptance and engagement in certain benevolent behaviors, as well as measuring their level of being considered sexist and kind. Results indicate that men who endorsed benevolently sexist ideology more frequently engaged in benevolent behaviors with women as well as believed this behavior was appropriate. However, regression analysis show kindness had a higher predictability in determining whether the men would in engage in these behaviors and consider it appropriate.
No Regrets? A Study Of Sex Shame, Guilt, And Embarrassment, Lauren Castor
No Regrets? A Study Of Sex Shame, Guilt, And Embarrassment, Lauren Castor
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the relationship between sexual regret and shame, guilt, and embarrassment in college students. Specifically, the current study examined which emotion (shame, guilt, or embarrassment) was the biggest predictor of sexual regret through an online survey. The results showed that shame, guilt, and embarrassment were all highly correlated. However, the relationships between regret and guilt and shame were more powerful than the relationship between regret and embarrassment. The findings were unable to distinguish which emotion (e.g. shame, guilt, embarrassment) was the greater predictor of regret. However further support is provided that shows shame, guilt, embarrassment, and regret are …

Understanding Educators’ Experiences During Long-Term School Closures, Jessica Pryor, Jessica Pryor
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
In the spring of 2020, many public places closed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Most public schools in the United States suddenly closed buildings as educators and students scrambled to adapt to distance education. This phenomenological, qualitative study holistically explores elementary educators’ experiences during the extended school closures. The 18current elementary educators who participated in individual interviews, served rural, elementary students. Individual interviews allowed participants to discuss and explain their experiences concerning methods, materials, time commitments, and communication with colleagues, parents, and students. They also discussed how they used feedback to alter their teaching. The interviews were conducted during …
Paleofloods And Landform Development Influence Carbon Storage In A Humid-Subtropical River Valley, Christopher Lance Stewart
Paleofloods And Landform Development Influence Carbon Storage In A Humid-Subtropical River Valley, Christopher Lance Stewart
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Floodplains can store large amounts of soil organic carbon (SOC) despite covering a small fraction of the global land area. Since these valley-bottom landforms build through the action of flooding, the century to millennial-scale record of overbank deposition could be important in understanding controls on deep (>30 cm) SOC storage. Yet, the influence of flood history and landform development on carbon content is surprisingly not well known. I use a combined geological and pedological approach to characterize the sedimentation, soil development, and SOC of fluvial terraces along an impounded reach of the humid-subtropical Tennessee River valley, U.S.A. The standardized …
The Antimicrobial Activity Of Silicon Copper Nanoparticles, Angela Mangano
The Antimicrobial Activity Of Silicon Copper Nanoparticles, Angela Mangano
Sustainability Research & Creative Activities Grants Reports
Excessive overuse of antibiotics has led to the emergence of mutations within bacteria that result in drug resistance. In an effort to combat the expanding issue of drug resistance, nanoparticles' bactericidal capabilities are being researched as an alternative to antibiotics (Beyth, 2015). In this paper, research to explore a novel silicon copper nanoparticle's antimicrobial capabilities will be discussed. The novel nanoparticle was developed by West Chester University professor, Dr. Kolasinski. The specific research goals were to determine the time and dose dependency of the nanoparticles and investigate the antimicrobial spectrum of activity against Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, and viruses. Gram-positive …
Attachment And Perceived Infidelity Of Military Spouses During Active-Duty Members’ Deployment, Heather Ann Alvarado
Attachment And Perceived Infidelity Of Military Spouses During Active-Duty Members’ Deployment, Heather Ann Alvarado
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Frequent military deployments have been associated with relationship issues for active-duty members, such as marital conflict and infidelity. Previous research has indicated that attachment, communication, and mental health are associated with military marriages’ stability during deployment. However, there remains an important gap in the current literature on military marriages regarding perceptions of infidelity (emotional and sexual). Proponents of attachment theory postulate that early attachment experiences facilitate the development of self-perception as well as perceptions of others. From this perspective, the attachment of military spouses is associated with their perceptions of their active-duty spouses engaging in infidelity. The purpose of this …

Gratitude Among Mothers Raising A Child With Special Health Care Needs, Keli Jean Kleindorfer
Gratitude Among Mothers Raising A Child With Special Health Care Needs, Keli Jean Kleindorfer
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
For a mother raising a child with special health care needs (CSHCN), maintaining positive feelings of gratitude can become challenging because of the stress associated with caregiving, as well as the consequences of unmanaged stress, which include decreases in both physical and psychological health and well-being. Chronic, unmanaged stress has been associated with various health issues that can be severe and potentially life-threatening. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine how mothers raising a CSHCN experience gratitude. A secondary purpose was to identify possible barriers to experiencing gratitude, which, when implemented as a coping style, may decrease the …

The Impact Of Instagram Usage And Other Social Factors On Self-Esteem Scores, Yael Treitel
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Instagram has more than 400 million monthly active users and 80 million shared photos with 3.5 billion likes daily. On Instagram, many people post their entire lives for others to see and comment on. This leads to people judging, commenting, and even trying to emulate others they see on social media. This constant comparing to others can lead to a host of psychological issues such as depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. As social media becomes more of a staple in people's lives, it is important to study and understand the possible pitfalls to the culture it perpetuates. The purpose of …
Predicting And Mitigating Civil Conflict: Vertical Grievances And Conflict In Central Africa, Jd Walter
Predicting And Mitigating Civil Conflict: Vertical Grievances And Conflict In Central Africa, Jd Walter
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Recent conflict research has relied on proxy variables of horizontal inequality to make causal assumptions, but these do not reveal the root of deprivation in aggrieved populations. However, it is important to continue to explore the greed-grievance dichotomy to explain the persistence of violent civil conflict. The purpose of this quantitative study was to expand this line of inquiry by investigating the relationship between indicators of vertical deprivation and reported civil conflict incidents to determine whether a significant correlation exists. Relative deprivation theory provided the framework for this study, which consisted of 10,779 survey responses regarding lived experience across 7 …
Evidence That Hindbrain Astrocytes In The Rat Detect Low Glucose With A Glucose Transporter 2-Phospholipase C-Calcium Release Mechanism, Richard C. Rogers, Susan J. Burke, J. Jason Collier, Sue Ritter, Gerlinda E. Hermann
Evidence That Hindbrain Astrocytes In The Rat Detect Low Glucose With A Glucose Transporter 2-Phospholipase C-Calcium Release Mechanism, Richard C. Rogers, Susan J. Burke, J. Jason Collier, Sue Ritter, Gerlinda E. Hermann
Division of Basic Science Faculty Publications
Astrocytes generate robust cytoplasmic calcium signals in response to reductions in extracellular glucose. This calcium signal, in turn, drives purinergic gliotransmission, which controls the activity of catecholaminergic (CA) neurons in the hindbrain. These CA neurons are critical to triggering glucose counter-regulatory responses (CRRs) that, ultimately, restore glucose homeostasis via endocrine and behavioral means. Although the astrocyte low-glucose sensor involvement in CRR has been accepted, it is not clear how astrocytes produce an increase in intracellular calcium in response to a decrease in glucose. Our ex vivo calcium imaging studies of hindbrain astrocytes show that the glucose type 2 transporter (GLUT2) …

Evidence-Based Diagnosis Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Using Quantitative Electroencephalography, Roger Yoder
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Diagnosing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is challenging and is currently, diagnosis through self-administered checklists. Because a diagnosis of PTSD can open up significant benefits to compensation, education, and medical care, people can tailor their responses to the checklist to help ensure a diagnosis of PTSD. The purpose of the study was to examine the utility of the quantitative electroencephalograph for diagnosing PTSD. Frequency and presence of biomarkers and alpha brain wave symmetry in the frontal and parietal lobes were examined. Research questions involved examining the presence of alpha wave imbalance across the frontal lobe and between the right and left …

Implementation Of An Electronic Health Record Notification System For Reduction Of Pessary Complications, Margaret Hull
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
Pelvic floor dysfunction is a significant quality of life concern. Use of a pessary, a vaginal support device, may improve symptoms associated with this condition. While pessaries are an effective and low-risk management of the problem, complications can occur. Little data exists to define recommendations for follow-up to reduce complications. This quality improvement study was completed in two steps. A baseline evaluation was completed to determine the complication rate among pessary users within an urogynecology practice at a large tertiary care center. Via a retrospective chart review, data collected included kept and missed appointments, use or nonuse of local estrogen, …

Portraits Of Professional Collaboration: Faculty-Librarian Teaching Partnerships, Carrie L. Forbes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many regional accrediting organizations for higher education have embraced information literacy as a key component for both student success and student learning outcomes. Through embedded librarianship practices, librarians are now taking a leading role in developing and promoting users’ information literacy skills and in adopting an active classroom teaching approach. Faculty-librarian team teaching is a best practice for integrating information literacy into the higher education curricula, but the extant research has largely focused on the barriers to collaboration. Using Walsh and Kahn’s (2010) model of “collaborative working” as a conceptual framework, this dissertation explores the qualities and characteristics of four …

Defying The Odds: Exploring The Ways First-Generation College Students Enact Resilience, Paris Lauren Nelson
Theses and Dissertations--Communication
This thesis examined the experiences of first-generation college students in the context of higher education. This thesis was framed by the communication theory of resilience to discover how first-generation college students enact five processes of resilience: crafting normalcy, affirming identity anchors, maintaining and using communication networks, employing alternate logics, and foregrounding productive action. First-generation college students face academic preparation, financial, social capital, personal, and college completion adversities that may necessitate engagement in resilience processes. Participants (N = 8) participated in focus groups and interviews where they discussed messages from family, peers, and university faculty and staff involving reactive and proactive …

Recipes For Anger Appeals: A Systematic Review, Tianen Chen
Theses and Dissertations--Communication
Although there is an increasing use of anger appeals in communication research, scholars have yet to fully explore the causes of anger. Anger is elicited in situations where individuals perceive that their desired goals are blocked or needs are not fulfilled (Harmon-Jones & Harmon-Jones, 2016). Using Maslow’s hierarchy of human needs model (Maslow, 1943), the current study aims to systematically review communication studies on anger appeals to synthesize and categorize the violations of goals/needs that have been studied or utilized to elicit anger. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in eight relevant databases: ProQuest Dissertation & Thesis Global, Web of …

Boundaries And Infomediaries: A Qualitative Study Of The Information Practices Of Community Health Workers, Robert M. Shapiro Ii
Theses and Dissertations--Communication
Despite successful efforts to treat and manage diseases, public health officials have recently begun a campaign to refocus efforts toward initiatives to alleviate the pressures that are often referred to as social determinants of health. In eastern Kentucky, and in other geographical regions labeled as health professional shortage areas or medically underserved areas, issues stemming from social determinants are compounded with health care systems that are often lacking the human resources to meet basic medical needs. One strategy has been to utilize volunteers and paraprofessionals such as community health workers to lessen the burden on the primary care and hospital …

Hands-on research experiences are important opportunities for students to learn about the nature of inquiry and gain confidence in solving problems. Here, we present an inquiry-based lesson plan that investigates the foraging behavior of sciurid rodents (squirrels) in local habitats. Squirrels are an ideal study system for student research projects because many species are diurnal, easy to watch, and inhabit a range of habitats including college campuses. In this activity, instructors identify appropriate field sites and focal species, while students generate questions and brainstorm predictions in small groups regarding factors that might influence behavioral trade-offs in sciurids. Students conduct observational …

Although course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) are gaining popularity in biology, most are designed for benchwork-based laboratory courses while few focus on field-based skills. Many barriers to implementing field CUREs exist, including the difficulty in designing authentic research that can be accomplished in a limited lab timeframe, permitting and liability issues, and problems gathering sufficient data to meaningfully analyze. Squirrel-Net (http://squirrel-net.org) is a consortium of mammalogists from eight different institutions who have worked to overcome these limitations through four field-based CUREs focused on sciurid rodents (e.g., squirrels, chipmunks, marmots, prairie dogs). Each module is linked to a national dataset, allowing …

Phylogenomics Of The Epigenetic Toolkit Reveals Punctate Retention Of Genes Across Eukaryotes, Agnes K.M. Weiner, Mario A. Cerón-Romero, Ying Yan, Laura A. Katz
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Epigenetic processes in eukaryotes play important roles through regulation of gene expression, chromatin structure, and genome rearrangements. The roles of chromatin modification (e.g., DNA methylation and histone modification) and non-protein-coding RNAs have been well studied in animals and plants. With the exception of a few model organisms (e.g., Saccharomyces and Plasmodium), much less is known about epigenetic toolkits across the remainder of the eukaryotic tree of life. Even with limited data, previous work suggested the existence of an ancient epigenetic toolkit in the last eukaryotic common ancestor. We use PhyloToL, our taxon-rich phylogenomic pipeline, to detect homologs of epigenetic genes …
