Demonstrating Mate Choice Copying In Spiders Requires Further Research, R. Tucker Gilman, Kasey Fowler-Finn, Eileen A. Hebets Jan 2020

Demonstrating Mate Choice Copying In Spiders Requires Further Research, R. Tucker Gilman, Kasey Fowler-Finn, Eileen A. Hebets

Eileen Hebets Publications

Mate choice copying—when individuals learn to prefer mates or mate types that have been chosen by others—can influence trait evo-lution and speciation (Varela et al. 2018; Dion et al. 2019). Most examples of mate choice copying are from fish, birds, and mammals including humans (Varela et al. 2018). However, 2 invertebrate examples—fruit flies and wolf spiders—have been used to argue that the phenomenon may be phylogenetically widespread, and perhaps the rule rather than the exception in nature (Varela et al. 2018). Here, we revisit the evidence for mate choice copying in wolf spiders (Fowler-Finn et al. 2015) in light of …

The Effects Of Low-Level Pharmaceuticals On Stream Biofilm Structure And Function Across A Land-Use Gradient In Streams Of The Huron River Watershed, Elizabeth Mae Stover Jan 2020

The Effects Of Low-Level Pharmaceuticals On Stream Biofilm Structure And Function Across A Land-Use Gradient In Streams Of The Huron River Watershed, Elizabeth Mae Stover

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are a contaminant class of worldwide concern. Their environmental omnipresence indicates they may be a potential source of global change, and ecosystem-scale impacts at non-lethal levels have not been fully explored. We used stream biofilms to assess ecosystem responses to PPCPs. Biofilms were cultivated in streams draining areas of different land use and then exposed to triclosan, diphenhydramine, and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim treatments. We found evidence that low levels of these PPCPs affected some, but not all, aspects of biofilm processes and bacterial community composition. Bacterial carbon uptake was reduced (p = 0.06) and we found …

Climate Change Instruction In Higher Education: Pre-Service Teachers’ Engagement In An Interdisciplinary Pop-Up Learning Community, Mary Charlotte Bautistia Jan 2020

Climate Change Instruction In Higher Education: Pre-Service Teachers’ Engagement In An Interdisciplinary Pop-Up Learning Community, Mary Charlotte Bautistia

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

An interdisciplinary pop-up learning community (PLC) allowed students from various disciplines with different levels of content knowledge to discuss their perspectives and beliefs on climate change. The impact of this event on students was gauged by a survey from the Yale Project on Climate Change Communication. Furthermore, this project focuses on pre-service teachers who participated in the PLC. In order to investigate how pre-service teachers understand climate change and how they may or may not integrate these issues into their own instruction, individual interviews were conducted prior to and after the PLC to determine if the event had an impact …

Cdc42-Dependent Transfer Of Mir301 From Breast Cancer-Derived Extracellular Vesicles Regulates The Matrix Modulating Ability Of Astrocytes At The Blood–Brain Barrier, Golnaz Morad, Cassandra C. Daisy, Hasan H. Otu, Towia A. Libermann, Simon T. Dillon, Marsha A. Moses

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Breast cancer brain metastasis is a major clinical challenge and is associated with a dismal prognosis. Understanding the mechanisms underlying the early stages of brain metastasis can provide opportunities to develop efficient diagnostics and therapeutics for this significant clinical challenge. We have previously reported that breast cancer-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) breach the blood–brain barrier (BBB) via transcytosis and can promote brain metastasis. Here, we elucidate the functional consequences of EV transport across the BBB. We demonstrate that brain metastasis-promoting EVs can be internalized by astrocytes and modulate the behavior of these cells to promote extracellular matrix remodeling in vivo. We …

Perceptions Of Foster Care Workers On Birth Parenting Times, Pallas Schuster Jan 2020

Perceptions Of Foster Care Workers On Birth Parenting Times, Pallas Schuster

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Birth parenting time between children in foster care and their biological parents are often thought of as a standard path toward achieving reunification (Browne & Moloney, 2002; Haight et al., 2003). The overall goal of parenting time is to create space for both the parent and child to have positive parent-child interactions and either work towards or maintain a healthy parentchild relationship. However, birth parenting times can be stressful for the parent, child, foster parent, and the foster care caseworker. To facilitate optimal parenting times, evidenced-based practices recommended foster care workers utilize a relationship-based approach when supervising parenting time. However, …

Assessing The Health Of The Ground Beetle Assemblage And Ecosystem At Emerging Victoria Park, Chris Mortenson Jan 2020

Assessing The Health Of The Ground Beetle Assemblage And Ecosystem At Emerging Victoria Park, Chris Mortenson

Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects

The conversion of the 65-acre site now known as Victoria Park from an oil tank farm to an urban green space created an important and rare opportunity to both study ecosystem changes and support urban green spaces. Development in the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area has resulted in a significant increase in land used for urban development accompanied by a decrease in forests and wet lands (1) as wel l as accompanying ecosystem fragmentation, isolation and simplification (2). The rarity of this land use change makes monitoring Victoria Park’s development all the more important. Ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) are considered to …

Bed Bug Management In Healthcare Environments, Josh Shoemaker

Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects

For my Master’s Project, I propose to develop bed bug training materials that can be used to offer education on bed bug biology and best practices for bed bug control in medical facilities. The materials will include a training program and handouts for use in educating management and technicians who are Pest Management Professionals (PMPs), as well as resources for those professionals to use to train facility personnel.

Background

Bed bugs began to make a comeback as a pest in the US in the late 1990s. Since then, these ectoparasitic insects have become a significant issue for many households and …

Finding Strength In Vulnerability: Ethical Approaches When Conducting Research With Vulnerable Populations, Elizabeth Mollard, Holly Hatton-Bowers, Julie A. Tippens Jan 2020

Finding Strength In Vulnerability: Ethical Approaches When Conducting Research With Vulnerable Populations, Elizabeth Mollard, Holly Hatton-Bowers, Julie A. Tippens

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Researchers who desire to make positive changes for vulnerable populations often conduct problem-focused studies. Although problem focused research is important, when such studies are not carefully designed, their results can contribute to a deficit discourse. A deficit discourse is a narrative that describes the person through a myopic lens of negativity characterized only by illness, death, depression, failure, or the like. Deficit discourse negatively affects how health care providers and society interact with vulnerable people. This article discusses deficit discourse in health care and strengths-based research: an ethical approach to working with vulnerable individuals in research settings and a strategy …

Number Of Shoes Tested During A Running Shoe Mass Perception Task May Not Influence Accuracy, James G. Saxton, Joel G. Greenya, Christopher L. Kliethermes, David S. Senchina Jan 2020

Number Of Shoes Tested During A Running Shoe Mass Perception Task May Not Influence Accuracy, James G. Saxton, Joel G. Greenya, Christopher L. Kliethermes, David S. Senchina

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Commercially available running shoes differ in terms of their relative masses. It is unclear how well consumers may be able to judge mass differences from wearing alone, though previous studies suggest that perceptual outcomes may be influenced by experimental design factors such as the length of time worn. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the number of shoes used in a testing session impacts wearers’ mass perceptual accuracy. Forty-eight young adult males ran for 5 min in 4 pairs of shoes (their own running shoes plus 3 unfamiliar pairs) before being asked whether an unfamiliar running shoe …

Kinship Care Providers: Exploring The Relationship Of Child Temperment, Combined Factors Of Provider’S Relationship To Primary Parent And Reason For Placement, And Intensity Of Parenting Tasks To Parenting Stress, Shelagh Larkin Jan 2020

Kinship Care Providers: Exploring The Relationship Of Child Temperment, Combined Factors Of Provider’S Relationship To Primary Parent And Reason For Placement, And Intensity Of Parenting Tasks To Parenting Stress, Shelagh Larkin

Theses and Dissertations--Social Work

In the United States some 2.3 million children, or 3.1 % of all children, live with relatives or non-relatives in foster care or informal care situations outside the foster care system (Radel et al., 2016). These types of placements are called kinship and result from a variety of issues. Focusing on kinship care providers is important given that placement with strangers is stressful and even traumatic for a child (Vandivere et al., 2012). Vandivere et al. (2012) determined that children in kinship care, such as with grandparents, have better outcomes than children in non-kinship foster care. However, providers experience a …

The Ground On Which We All Stand: A Conversation About Menstrual Equity Law And Activism, Marcy L. Karin, Bridget J. Crawford, Margaret E. Johnson, Laura Strausfeld, Emily Gold Waldman

Journal Articles

This essay grows out of a panel discussion among five lawyers on the subject of menstrual equity activism. Each of the authors is a scholar, activist, or organizer involved in some form of menstrual equity work. The overall project is both enriched and complicated by an intersectional analysis. This essay increases awareness of existing menstrual equity and menstrual justice work; it also identifies avenues for further inquiry, next steps for legal action, and opportunities that lie ahead. After describing prior and current work at the junction of law and menstruation, the contributors evaluate the successes and limitations of recent legal …

Optimizing Monarch Butterfly And Bee Conservation Efforts In The Urban Landscape, Adam M. Baker Jan 2020

Optimizing Monarch Butterfly And Bee Conservation Efforts In The Urban Landscape, Adam M. Baker

Theses and Dissertations--Entomology

The eastern migratory population of monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) is in serious decline. Most of the efforts to conserve this iconic insect focus on habitat restoration in the US Midwest. Often overlooked are small butterfly-centric gardens that can act as stepping stones between urban and rural areas. These studies aim to optimize the conservation value of such gardens.

Eight milkweed (Asclepias) species varying in height, form, and leaf shape were compared over two years in a common-garden experiment. I measured milkweed growth, rhizome spread, and bloom periods, conducted bi-weekly counts of monarch eggs and larvae, evaluated …

Assessing The Effects Of An Authentic Project-Based Intervention On Secondary Students’ Understanding Of Ecosystems And Their Attitudes Toward And Interests In Stem, Kenneth Rolland Thompson

Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences

There is a need for secondary schools to provide more authentic, hands-on experiences in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and specifically, project-based investigation (PBI) environments in the classroom that focus on real-world problems relevant to students’ experiences, interest, and lives that manifest the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) following practices they prescribe. This study investigated how, to what extent, a contextualized aquaponics PBI (APBI) 10-week model unit affected high school students’ attitudes toward STEM in general, and aquaculture and aquaponics in particular, and interests in future STEM-related disciplines and/or STEM career pathways. This study also measured changes in students’ …

The Effects Of Framework Mutations At The Variable Domain Interface On Antibody Affinity Maturation In An Hiv-1 Broadly Neutralizing Antibody Lineage, Jeffrey O. Zhou , '19, Therese Ton , '19, Daniela Fera Jan 2020

The Effects Of Framework Mutations At The Variable Domain Interface On Antibody Affinity Maturation In An Hiv-1 Broadly Neutralizing Antibody Lineage, Jeffrey O. Zhou , '19, Therese Ton , '19, Daniela Fera

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

Understanding affinity maturation of antibodies that can target many variants of HIV-1 is important for vaccine development. While the antigen-binding site of antibodies is known to mutate throughout the co-evolution of antibodies and viruses in infected individuals, the roles of the mutations in the antibody framework region are not well understood. Throughout affinity maturation, the CH103 broadly neutralizing antibody lineage, from an individual designated CH505, altered the orientation of one of its antibody variable domains. The change in orientation was a response to insertions in the variable loop 5 (V5) of the HIV envelope. In this study, we generated CH103 …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

The G-quadruplex (GQ) is a well-studied non-canonical DNA structure formed by G-rich sequences found at telomeres and gene promoters. Biological studies suggest that GQs may play roles in regulating gene expression, DNA replication, and DNA repair. Small molecule ligands were shown to alter GQ structure and stability and thereby serve as novel therapies, particularly against cancer. In this work, we investigate the interaction of a G-rich sequence, 5’-GGGTTGGGTTGGGTTGGG-3’ (T1), with a water-soluble porphyrin, N-methyl mesoporphyrin IX (NMM) via biophysical and X-ray crystallographic studies. UV-vis and fluorescence titrations, as well as a Job plot, revealed a 1:1 binding stoichiometry with an …

Industrial And Regional Clusters: Concepts And Comparative Applications, 2nd Ed., Edward M. Bergman, Edward J. Feser Jan 2020

Industrial And Regional Clusters: Concepts And Comparative Applications, 2nd Ed., Edward M. Bergman, Edward J. Feser

Web Book of Regional Science

Industry clusters refer to the tight connections that bind certain firms and industries together in various aspects of common behavior, e.g., geographic location, sources of innovation, shared suppliers and factors of production, and so forth. Industry cluster concepts date from the last century, but they have captured the imagination of active policymakers and the serious attention of scholars only in the last decade of this century. Because clustering behavior is such a pervasive aspect of modern economies and global trade, it draws the attention of many different disciplines and benefits from their scholarship. Although a consideration of research on this …

Keystone Sector Identification: A Graph Theory-Social Network Analysis Approach, Maureen Kilkenny, Laura Nalbarte Jan 2020

Keystone Sector Identification: A Graph Theory-Social Network Analysis Approach, Maureen Kilkenny, Laura Nalbarte

Web Book of Regional Science

This Web Book presents a new a method for identifying keystone sectors in communities, where sectors are broadly defined to include churches, clubs, associations, and public institutions as well as firms and businesses. In an arch, the keystone is the one with the unique wedge shape at the top of the arch that is critical for the arch’s structural stability. While all other stones in an arch substitute for one another and can be removed (in pairs), the arch will fall apart if the keystone is lacking. The term keystone species was first coined by ecologists in the late 1960s …
