Factors That Influence Violence And Homicidal Ideation Among Serial Offenders, Jared Matthew Rogers Jan 2020

Factors That Influence Violence And Homicidal Ideation Among Serial Offenders, Jared Matthew Rogers

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Many studies have been conducted to identify sources of violence in serial killers, including environmental, biological, and mental disposition factors. However, serial killers’ sexual fantasies had not been explored. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive phenomenological study was to understand how sexual fantasies influence serial killers’ violent behavior. The theoretical framework consisted of ecological systems theory and social learning theory. Data from previously conducted interviews, serial killers’ manifestos, and historical records were used to conduct a comparative analysis of the behaviors, techniques, and identification signatures of serial killers. Data were coded and categorized to identify the relationship between sexual fantasies …

Service Members With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Who Face Employment Challenges Postdeployment, Donna Scurlark Sargent

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractThe Iraq War was the longest war in the history of the United States, involving over 2 million service members. Service members who served in Iraq or Afghanistan experienced a high rate of mental health disorders including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and substance abuse as they returned from deployment. Research is lacking in regard to how Army reservists and National Guardsmen function at home, school, work, and in the community upon their return from service. The purpose of this qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of service members with PTSD who experienced challenges with work …

The Impact Of Workplace Bullying On Days Absent Of Registered Nurses, Vitina Rita Speciale-Olmo Jan 2020

The Impact Of Workplace Bullying On Days Absent Of Registered Nurses, Vitina Rita Speciale-Olmo

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Workplace bullying (WPB) among registered nurses (RNs) in all forms has been a continual issue among nurses and healthcare professionals for decades. Among nurses, it is a healthcare administrative issue, as it increases the number of days RNs are absent from work, which, in turn, may result in short staffing and reduce the quality of care. Its psychological effects can lead to higher rates of absenteeism and reduce the quality of care. The purpose of this quantitative study was to use secondary data to inform healthcare administrators on the impact, if any, that WPB has on registered nurses (RN) and …

Biology Faculty Publications

Early warning systems are widely considered as one of the more important aspects to reduce the impacts and consequences that hazardous natural events pose to societies. Similar to the other terms related to disaster risk reduction, this concept has evolved over time to eventually result in a comprehensive framework, that includes features from the upstream phase, such as detection and forecasting tools and models, to the downstream phase that considers a people-centred approach.

Based on this holistic conceptual framework, this paper attempts to assess the degree of adequacy and integration of early warning systems with reference to international standards using …

Geographic Access To Community Mental Healthcare And Adherence To Treatment Among Patients With Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders, Marie Smith-East

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Disparities in access to mental health care for individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders continue to exist in the United States despite the creation of mental health policies seeking to improve access to care. As an integral element of healthcare system delivery, access is influenced by spatial (location) and non-spatial (sociodemographic) factors. Highlighting both spatial and non-spatial dimensions of access to mental healthcare, this study employed an innovative approach encompassing the geography of access and the integration of location analyses to bridge the gap between psychosocial dynamics and mental health services for improving cost-effective continuity of care. The aims were as …

Indium Phosphide Based Quantum Cascade Lasers Grown On Silicon Substrate, Rowel Go Jan 2020

Indium Phosphide Based Quantum Cascade Lasers Grown On Silicon Substrate, Rowel Go

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCLs) are semiconductor devices that, currently, have been observed to emit radiation from ~ 2.6 µm to 250 µm (1 to 100 terahertz range of frequencies). They have established themselves as the laser of choice for spectroscopic gas sensing in the mid-wavelength infrared (3-8 µm) and long-wavelength infrared (8-15 µm) region. In the 4-12 µm wavelength region, the highest performing QCL devices, in terms of wall-plug efficiency and continuous wave operation, are indium phosphide (InP) based. The ultimate goal is to incorporate this InP-based QCL technology to silicon (Si) substrate since most opto-electronics are Si-based. The main …

Control Strategies For Multi-Controller Multi-Objective Systems, Raaed Al-Azzawi Jan 2020

Control Strategies For Multi-Controller Multi-Objective Systems, Raaed Al-Azzawi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

This dissertation's focus is control systems controlled by multiple controllers, each having its own objective function. The control of such systems is important in many practical applications such as economic systems, the smart grid, military systems, robotic systems, and others. To reap the benefits of feedback, we consider and discuss the advantages of implementing both the Nash and the Leader-Follower Stackelberg controls in a closed-loop form. However, closed-loop controls require continuous measurements of the system's state vector, which may be expensive or even impossible in many cases. As an alternative, we consider a sampled closed-loop implementation. Such an implementation requires …

Identifying Diurnal Variability Of Brain Connectivity Patterns Using Graph Theory, Farzad Vasheghani Farahani Jan 2020

Identifying Diurnal Variability Of Brain Connectivity Patterns Using Graph Theory, Farzad Vasheghani Farahani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Circadian rhythms are 24-hour fluctuations determining periodicity in a wide range of physiological processes, including neural activity and hormone secretion, which controls sleeping and feeding habits. Despite significant diurnal variation in human brain function, neuroscientists have rarely considered the effects of time-of-day on their studies. Moreover, there are interpersonal discrepancies in sleep-wake patterns, diurnal preferences, and daytime alertness (known as chronotypes), which can cause different diurnal profiles in human cognition and brain performance. The study of circadian typology differences has increased in recent years, however, examining the effects of both time-of-day and people's chronotype requires further elucidation. In the present …

Seismocardiography - Genesis, And Utilization Of Machine Learning For Variability Reduction And Improved Cardiac Health Monitoring, Peshala Thibbotuwawa Gamage Jan 2020

Seismocardiography - Genesis, And Utilization Of Machine Learning For Variability Reduction And Improved Cardiac Health Monitoring, Peshala Thibbotuwawa Gamage

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Seismocardiography (SCG) is the measured chest surface vibrations resulting from cardiac activity. Although SCG can contain information that correlate with cardiac health, its utility may be limited by lack of understanding of the signal genesis and a variability that can mask subtle SCG changes. The current research utilized medical imaging reconstruction and finite element method (FEM) to simulate SCG by modeling the propagation of myocardial movements to the chest surface. FEM analysis provided a link between myocardial movements and the SCG signals measured at the chest surface and suggested that myocardial movement is a primary source of SCG. Increased understanding …

In the U.S. there are approximately 25,000 youth that leave the Child Welfare System without a stable long-term housing arrangement and are left to age out of foster care and transition into adulthood (Dion, Dworsky, Kauff, & Kleinman, 2014, p. iii). These foster youth alumni (FYA) travel through various paths yet share many traumatic events that cause long-term effects that influence coping skills. This qualitative and phenomenological study aims to investigate the various traumas experienced, before and during foster care, and the coping skills that FYA have developed. A total of 16 FYA, from the Florida Child Welfare System, were …

Correlates Of War And Sino Revisionism, Douglas Sanders Jan 2020

Correlates Of War And Sino Revisionism, Douglas Sanders

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

Some conflict resolution and national security professionals contend there is no shortfall of qualitative research on Asia, China, Realism, or war. That said, this doctoral dissertation has two overarching purposes: first, an empirical study of interstate conflict at the regional and systematic levels. Second, is to examine the extent to which the Correlates of War covariates associated with the People’s Republic of China’s revisionist strategies. Combining these objectives led to the formulation of the main research question: What is the relationship between the correlates of war and China’s revisionist strategy in Asia? Realism contends that strong national capability and displays …

This phenomenological study is aimed at exploring the resilience of human trafficking victims. More specifically, this research study focuses on the experience of female sex trafficking victims through the lese of practitioners who work with them. By understanding the causes that make females vulnerable to be recruited by traffickers, the way they get exploited, as well as how they are able to leave the trafficking situation, this dissertation provides an understanding about the factors that promote healing and resiliency from the trafficking experience. Feminist theory was used to illuminate existing literature on the subject, and data analysis was conducted using …

The Morning After: A Phenomenological Approach To Understanding The Process Of Repair And Reconciliation In The Aftermath Of Clergy Sexual Misconduct, Damion Taj Quaye Jan 2020

The Morning After: A Phenomenological Approach To Understanding The Process Of Repair And Reconciliation In The Aftermath Of Clergy Sexual Misconduct, Damion Taj Quaye

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

American religious institutions are expected to be free from the unsettling behaviors found in secular institutions. However, scandals in churches have revealed a difficult truth; the people who operate these faith institutions are just as flawed as those who do not. This hermeneutic phenomenological study explored the damage caused by clergy sexual misconduct. Congregations, families, religious organizations, and the concept of the Christian church suffer because of clergy sexual misconduct. There are significant barriers to repair and reconciliation. Cases of clergy sexual misconduct in the Roman Catholic Church have received much of the attention, but the problem is bigger than …

Better Devils Of Our Nature: The Role Of Violence-Justifying Ideologies In Opinion Formation, Steven Kaiser Jan 2020

Better Devils Of Our Nature: The Role Of Violence-Justifying Ideologies In Opinion Formation, Steven Kaiser

Theses and Dissertations--Political Science

Extensive theoretical and empirical research has examined the role that violence-justifying ideologies play in generating violent behavior. Yet, a substantial body of this work employs measures that are consistently associated with sexist attitudes and gender stereotypes. As a consequence, scholars are limited in our ability to fully comprehend individuals’ propensity to endorse, or even promote violent behavior – or how these attitudes influence perceptions of victims and related policy preferences.

I contribute to this line of research by creating a gender-neutral battery of anti-violence questions, in large part divorced from sexist stereotypes, to assess the consequence of those attitudes for …

From Hobbes To Habermas: The Anti-Cultural Turn In Western Political Thought, Ralph Gert Schoellhammer Jan 2020

From Hobbes To Habermas: The Anti-Cultural Turn In Western Political Thought, Ralph Gert Schoellhammer

Theses and Dissertations--Political Science

The theme of this dissertation is the anti-cultural turn of Western Political Thought that has emerged out of Enlightenment thinking and was first turned into a comprehensive political idea by Thomas Hobbes.

Beginning with an overview of psychological research into the phenomenon of culture I put forward the argument that human beings are by nature social and individualistic, but that they oscillate between their ability to put group-interests before individual interests and vice versa. Culture is the main mechanism that influences which interest we give priority. This mechanism work through emotional attachments that create intuitions about what is morally right …

A current trend in biodevices has involved a shift from traditional rigid platforms to flexible and stretchable formats. These flexible devices are expected to have a significant impact on future healthcare, disease diagnostics and therapeutics. However, the fabrication of such flexible devices has been limited by the choice of materials. Biomimetic composites of naturally derived and synthetic polymers provide exciting opportunities to develop mechanically flexible, physiologically compliant, and degradable bioelectronic systems. Advantages include the ability to provide conformal contact at non-planar biointerfaces, being able to be degraded at controllable rate, and invoking minimal reactions within the body. These factors present …

Novel Post-Translational Modification And Function Of Fus: The Relevance To Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Alexandra Arenas Jan 2020

Novel Post-Translational Modification And Function Of Fus: The Relevance To Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Alexandra Arenas

Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by the preferential death of motor neurons. Approximately 10% of ALS cases are familial and 90% are sporadic. Fused in Sarcoma (FUS) is a ubiquitously expressed RNA binding protein implicated in familial ALS and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). FUS is ubiquitously expressed in cells and has a variety of functions in the nucleus and cytoplasm. FUS mutations in the nuclear localization sequence (NLS) causes mislocalization of FUS in the cytoplasm, where it can undergo liquid-liquid phase separation and become stress granules or protein inclusions. Although FUS inclusion bodies can be found in …

Prostate Cancer Resistance To Cabazitaxel Chemotherapy, Diane Begemann Jan 2020

Prostate Cancer Resistance To Cabazitaxel Chemotherapy, Diane Begemann

Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology

The plasticity of prostate tumors contributes to the heterogeneity in response and acquisition of therapeutic resistance in advanced prostate cancer. Disruption of the phenotypic landscape via epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) enables prostate tumors to invade and metastasize. Our previous studies demonstrated that cabazitaxel (a 2nd generation FDA-approved taxane chemotherapy) that is used for treatment of castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC), causes reversal of EMT to mesenchymal-epithelial transition (MET). The present study examined the effect of sequencing cabazitaxel chemotherapy mediated MET on prostate tumor re-differentiation and its impact on overcoming resistance in models of advanced prostate cancer.

The presence of DHT (1nM) …

Health Law—A Hard Pill To Swallow: An Examination Of The U.S. Drug Development Process And State And Federal Government Measures To Expand Patient Access To Investigational Drugs, Alissa Bang Jan 2020

Health Law—A Hard Pill To Swallow: An Examination Of The U.S. Drug Development Process And State And Federal Government Measures To Expand Patient Access To Investigational Drugs, Alissa Bang

Western New England Law Review

The drug development process—regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)—is complex, lengthy, and costly. For years, reformers have sought more liberal access to potential drug treatments that have not yet reached the final stages of the process. “Right to Try” laws and the FDA’s expanded access program are among some of the government measures designed to allow terminally ill patients to obtain investigational drugs before they receive FDA approval. This Article explores the strengths and shortcomings of some of the measures undertaken by state and federal governments, while highlighting the policy struggle between providing individuals early access to …

‘To Awaken The Medical And Hygienic Conscience Of The People’: Cultivating Enlightened Citizenship Through Free Public Healthcare In Haiti From 1915–34, Elliott M. Reichardt

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty publications

This paper addresses the relative scholarly oversight of the history of public health in Haiti through a close examination of the colonial public health system constructed and operated by the United States (US) during its occupation of Haiti from 1915 to 1934. More than simply documenting a neglected aspect of Caribbean history, the paper offers the US occupation of Haiti as a remarkably clear example of a failed attempt to use a free public health service to cultivate a health conscientiousness among the Haitian citizenry through the aggressive treatment of highly visible ailments such as cataracts and yaws. I argue …

The Art Of Contested Histories: "In Pursuit Of Venus [Infected]" And The Pacific Legacy, Deborah Gare, Riley Buchanan, Elizabeth Burns-Dans, Toni Church

Arts Papers and Journal Articles

European artists of the eighteenth century framed an exotic textual and visual narrative of the Pacific, drawing largely on knowledge gained from exploratory journeys of the 1760s and 1770s. Visual representations of the Pacific became socially fashionable and commercially successful. The French wallpaper manufacturer, Dufour, captured this commercial potential in a dramatic, panoramic wallpaper that told stories of European encounters with Pacific peoples: Les Sauvages de la Mer Pacifique (1804). Yet it was selective, defining the Pacific by moments of contact with Cook and other explorers. Lisa Reihana's In Pursuit of Venus [Infected] (2015–17) dramatically interrogates the eighteenth-century narrative of …

Caring For Children In Child Welfare Systems: A Trauma-Informed Model Of Integrated Primary Care, Jill Mcleigh, Laura Lamminen, Heidi Roman

Integrated, Trauma-Informed Care

Children involved with the child welfare system have high rates of behavioral health concerns, chronic health conditions, and developmental disabilities. Further, as a result of the complicated relationships among the court system, child protective services, and caregivers (i.e., biological, kinship, and/or foster caregivers) and the high volume of health-, behavior-, and development-related services children in care need, the services they receive tend to be fragmented and problem driven. On top of these challenges, children involved with the child welfare system have been exposed to trauma, and often more than one form of trauma. Taken together, these factors point to the …
