Fiddler Crabs And Selfish Herds: High School Cliques Or More Diverse?, Shelby Warrelmann Jan 2020

Fiddler Crabs And Selfish Herds: High School Cliques Or More Diverse?, Shelby Warrelmann

Bridges: A Journal of Student Research

Marsh fiddler crabs (Uca pugnax) have diverse foraging habits which are dependent on the personality of each crab. The formation of droves or preference to scavenge alone may correspond to factors such as: Location within a herd, herd size, size of males, and feeding rate. Previous research suggests that 1) a central location in a herd corresponds to an increase in feeding rate 2) herd size doesn't affect feeding rates and 3) location within a herd often is related to an individual's size. A multi-year observational study was conducted to determine the validity of these claims and found that while …

Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen Dynamics In Swash Zone Sands Of Long Bay, Sc, Alexis F. Echols Jan 2020

Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen Dynamics In Swash Zone Sands Of Long Bay, Sc, Alexis F. Echols

Bridges: A Journal of Student Research

A key component affecting the biogeochemistry of the sedimentary environment is pore water between grains of sediments. Sedimentary microorganisms are constantly modifying chemical compounds as part of their life functions which are then exchanged between the sediment column and the overlying water column. Dissolved inorganic nitrogen, a major element for life, takes on several forms including nitrate, nitrite, and ammonium which vary in concentration throughout the sediment and with respect to each other. The relative concentrations of these nitrogen species have been previously briefly explored in sandy columns, where redox gradients that control their relative concentrations can be fairly deep …

Where For What: A Meta-Analysis For The Category-Specific Activations For Living/Nonliving Concepts In The Past Two Decades, Kimberly D. Derderian, Xiaojue Zhou, Lang Chen Jan 2020

Where For What: A Meta-Analysis For The Category-Specific Activations For Living/Nonliving Concepts In The Past Two Decades, Kimberly D. Derderian, Xiaojue Zhou, Lang Chen

Psychology

The cortical organization of the semantic network has been studied extensively in neuropsychological and neuroimaging studies. Recent theories have heavily relied on the observation of category-specific activations, i.e., the preferential activations in brain regions for specific semantic categories. With decades of research, a full understanding of the organization has not yet been reached, since little is known about the factors that contribute to the variances in observed activation patterns across numerous neuroimaging studies. In this study, we first reviewed 97 published papers that reported category-specific activations for living or nonliving concepts in the past two decades. Then, using the Activation …

Faculty Research 2020

Short paragraphs that describe gene function, referred to as gene summaries, are valued by users of biological knowledgebases for the ease with which they convey key aspects of gene function. Manual curation of gene summaries, while desirable, is difficult for knowledgebases to sustain. We developed an algorithm that uses curated, structured gene data at the Alliance of Genome Resources (Alliance; www.alliancegenome.org) to automatically generate gene summaries that simulate natural language. The gene data used for this purpose include curated associations (annotations) to ontology terms from the Gene Ontology, Disease Ontology, model organism knowledgebase (MOK)-specific anatomy ontologies and Alliance orthology data. …

Mapping Floral Resources For Bees Using Drone Imagery, Arya Massarat Jan 2020

Mapping Floral Resources For Bees Using Drone Imagery, Arya Massarat

HMC Senior Theses

Poor nutrition among modern day honey bee colonies is contributing to their decline. Yet understanding how the diversity and abundance of flowering species around a colony affects its health remains difficult because of the manual labor required to analyze these large foraging landscapes. We describe a procedure for automatically mapping the species of flowering plants around a colony from overlapping drone images. We developed a pipeline for stitching the images together, identifying plants within them, and classifying each plant by its species. The resulting map of the flowering species surrounding a colony could be used in future experiments that aim …

Associations Between Age, Menopausal Status, And Physical Function In Middle-Aged Women, Sydney Sweck Jan 2020

Associations Between Age, Menopausal Status, And Physical Function In Middle-Aged Women, Sydney Sweck

Open Access Master's Theses

Importance and Objective: Physical function limitations affect approximately one fifth of middle- aged women. However, correlates of these limitations are poorly understood; limited research investigates the associations between menopausal status, physical function, physical activity, and body composition, and the research available is equivocal about these associations. Methods: Using a cross-sectional approach, 107 (53.31 ± 6.14 yr) middle-aged women completed six objective assessments of physical function (transfer task, 8-foot up-and-go, 30-second chair stands, 6-minute walk test, lift and carry, and lower extremity physical function composite score) and one subjective assessment of physical function (36-Item Short Form Survey physical functioning subscale). Muscular …

Exploring The Relationship Between Selfcompassion And Disordered Eating Behaviors, Amanda A. Roy Jan 2020

Exploring The Relationship Between Selfcompassion And Disordered Eating Behaviors, Amanda A. Roy

Open Access Master's Theses

The present study sought to examine the relationship between self-compassion (SC) and disordered eating behavior (DEB) in a racially diverse all female sample (N = 374). As the factor structure of the self-compassion scale (SCS) has been criticized for being unstable, we first evaluated the best fitting model in the present sample. The SCS is comprised of 26 items and six subscales that measure positive and negative aspects of SC (i.e. self-kindness and self-judgement). Confirmatory Factor Analyses revealed a two-factor conceptualization fit the data best, indicating that both the positive and negative items measure distinct factors better than an …

Combined Effect Of Herbivory And Salinity Stress On The Common Reed, Phragmites Australis, Jennifer Soukup Jan 2020

Combined Effect Of Herbivory And Salinity Stress On The Common Reed, Phragmites Australis, Jennifer Soukup

Open Access Master's Theses

With the rapid decline of Phragmites australis in the Mississippi River Delta (MRD) and increasing threat of land erosion, understanding the possible contributing factors to reed dieback have become increasingly apparent. In this study, we use a greenhouse experiment to examine how the combination of salinity and herbivory could contribute to carbon starvation and ultimately reed dieback in reed stands of North American native and/or the introduced European in New England wetlands. We measured the aboveground biomass, leaf water content, leaf toughness, and specific leaf area, as well as carbohydrate levels and starch content across three salinity treatments with and …

Growing Emerging Researchers In A Tesol Teacher Education Program: Implications For Feedback Practice, Sarina Chugani Molina Jan 2020

Growing Emerging Researchers In A Tesol Teacher Education Program: Implications For Feedback Practice, Sarina Chugani Molina

School of Leadership and Education Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

As teacher educators (TEs), we have a unique and remarkable opportunity to mentor the next generation of teachers. Over the years, our teacher candidates (TCs) have reported a sense of cognitive and affective dissonance while engaging in their culminating master's research requirement as part of a research seminar course. Cognitively, this research study requires knowledge-generation quite different from research they engaged in throughout the program, where they would synthesize and analyze published work in response to a prompt. This knowledge-generation process would often result in challenging previously held assumptions regarding the topic of inquiry through an analysis of authentic data …

Possible Implications Of Weather Variation On Reproductive Phenology Of Europeancommon Toad In Southeastern Europe, Bogdan Jovanovic, Ethan J. Kessler, Marija Ilic, Jelena Corovic, Natasa Tomasevic-Kolarov, Christopher A. Phillips, Jelka Crnobrnja Isailovic

Turkish Journal of Zoology

We tracked yearly variation in breeding phenology in relation to weather parameters in a common European toad population from the southeastern part of its range. Phenological data were collected from 2001 to 2003 and from 2011 to 2017 and compared to open-access daily weather data from a nearby weather station. Data analysis revealed no significant effect of weather on initiation of breeding and a negative relationship between mean daily humidity and mean cloud cover on the duration of breeding season (P = 0.03). Further analysis showed a decreasing trend in breeding season humidity in the past 70 years. Our results …

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology

The intricate process of biofilm formation in the human pathogen Staphylococcus aureus involves distinct stages during which a complex mixture of matrix molecules is produced and modified throughout the developmental cycle. Early in biofilm development, a subpopulation of cells detaches from its substrate in an event termed “exodus” that is mediated by SaePQRS-dependent stochastic expression of a secreted staphylococcal nuclease, which degrades extracellular DNA within the matrix, causing the release of cells and subsequently allowing for the formation of metabolically heterogenous microcolonies. Since the SaePQRS regulatory system is involved in the transcriptional control of multiple S. aureus virulence factors, the …
