The Enlightenment: John Messlier, Edward Jayne Jan 2020

The Enlightenment: John Messlier, Edward Jayne

English Faculty Publications

First paragraph: Today many exceptions seem obvious relevant to the historic advance of secularism from the Renaissance to the Reformation followed by the Enlightenment. However, a basic transition seems to have sustained itself over many decades in the modern recovery of religious disbelief ultimately derivative of pre-Socratic philosophy consolidated by Aristotle. For example, the two years of 1610-1611 seem to have set the stage for all three of the later historic epochs, the Renaissance followed by the Reformation and Enlightenment. The King James translation of the Bible in 1611 might have been a major achievement of the English Reformation just …

CDM Annual Reports

LETTER FROM THE DEAN

As I write this letter wrapping up the 2019-20 academic year, we remain in a global pandemic that has profoundly altered our lives. While many things have changed, some stayed the same: our CDM community worked hard, showed up for one another, and continued to advance their respective fields. A year that began like many others changed swiftly on March 11th when the University announced that spring classes would run remotely. By March 28th, the first day of spring quarter, we had moved 500 CDM courses online thanks to the diligent work of our faculty, staff, …

Genetic Interactions Affect Lung Function In Patients With Systemic Sclerosis., Anna L. Tyler, J Matthew Mahoney, Gregory W. Carter Jan 2020

Genetic Interactions Affect Lung Function In Patients With Systemic Sclerosis., Anna L. Tyler, J Matthew Mahoney, Gregory W. Carter

Faculty Research 2020

Scleroderma, or systemic sclerosis (SSc), is an autoimmune disease characterized by progressive fibrosis of the skin and internal organs. The most common cause of death in people with SSc is lung disease, but the pathogenesis of lung disease in SSc is insufficiently understood to devise specific treatment strategies. Developing targeted treatments requires not only the identification of molecular processes involved in SSc-associated lung disease, but also understanding of how these processes interact to drive pathology. One potentially powerful approach is to identify alleles that interact genetically to influence lung outcomes in patients with SSc. Analysis of interactions, rather than individual …

Dancers are susceptible to overtraining caused by work demands, leading to both mental and physiological burn out. The purpose of this research is to formulate an overtraining prevention plan for dancers through the use of periodization models and work-life balance programs. The work-life balance benefits within similarly demanding organizations as well as work-life benefit exemplar organizations were analyzed and used to evaluate how similar programming could be implemented for professional dancers. Respite, disability/illness, educational/career transition, disaster/emergency relief, parental, and counseling/healthcare policies and benefits were examined. The results of this comprehensive examination revealed several policies that could be implemented for dancers.

Understanding Striga Occurrence And Risk Under Changing Climatic Conditions Across Different Agroecological Farming Systems At Local And Regional Scales, Bester Tawona Mudereri

All PhD Dissertations

The invasion by Striga in most cereal crop fields in Africa has posed an acute threat to food security and socioeconomic integrity. Consequently, numerous technological and research developments have been made to minimize and even control the Striga impacts on crop production. So far, efforts to control Striga have primarily focused on the manipulation of the genetics of the host crops, as well as understanding the phenological and physiological traits, along with the chemical composition of the weed. These initiatives have immensely contributed to the management of Striga across the continents. However, on-farm Striga control technologies require spatial explicit locational …

All PhD Dissertations

Agriculture is a fundamental source of sustainable livelihoods in sub-Saharan Africa and millions of people in the region rely solely on small-scale farming for their food security. However, the impacts of invasive alien species (IAS) on crop production are serious, and there is no sign of this abating. Among the recent IAS that have invaded Africa in the last decade, the South American tomato pinworm Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) has been one of the most damaging. Following its first record in the Maghrebregion of Africa in 2008, T. absolutarapidly spread throughout Africa with substantial impacts on tomato production, often …

Child Protection Services: The Developmental Consequences Of Arbitrary Removal (2020-2021), John Jackson

CPN 101: Researched Inquiry

This research inquiry example details the developmental consequences for children removed from their biological homes by Children’s Services. Jackson uses sources to discuss physical, mental, and emotional implications for removing children from their homes or parents in their future development as both children and adults. Not only does Jackson present an alternative perspective thinking about negative consequences and how the process of removal puts parents at odds with regaining custody, but he also proposes an alternative solution in the conclusion.

Pratt concludes with a call for future regulations and focus on medical ethics.

Illegitimate Control: An Acknowledgement Of False White Supremacy (2020-2021), Whitman Ives Jan 2020

Illegitimate Control: An Acknowledgement Of False White Supremacy (2020-2021), Whitman Ives

CPN 101: Researched Inquiry

This research inquiry introduces a timely conversation on racism, cultural appropriation, and white supremacy. Ives’ argument is that the root cause of cultural appropriation and racism can be traced to a negative and false history of white supremacy. In other words, white culture has been founded and perpetuated based on power-seeking behavior, of which racism is more a symptom. Ives asserts that it is important to acknowledge that white culture is based on false assumptions of supremacy and to address that more systematically rather than addressing only individual events or instances of racism.

Specialty Drugs And The Health Care Cost Crisis, Sharona Hoffman, Isaac D. Buck Jan 2020

Specialty Drugs And The Health Care Cost Crisis, Sharona Hoffman, Isaac D. Buck

Faculty Publications

Specialty drugs, often dispensed by specialty pharmacies, are among the most expensive drugs on the market. They are significant contributors to the American health care cost problem, but in many ways they escape public and regulatory scrutiny. Surprisingly, medications are designated as specialty drugs by pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), entities that are part of the insurance industry, rather than by the Food and Drug Administration or medical authorities.

Specialty drugs have thus far received little attention in the legal literature. Yet, they raise important legal and regulatory questions. For example, there are no federal government rules (and only a handful …

In Or Out? Perceptions Of Inclusion And Exclusion Among Ais Members, Jaime Windeler, Stacie Petter, Kathy Chudoba, Emma Coleman, Grace Fox, Thomas A. Chapman

Data Analytics & Information Systems Faculty Publications

People want a sense of community, a benefit that a professional association such as the Association for Information Systems (AIS) can provide to members. When attempts to create a shared experience fall short and we feel excluded, we disengage and stop further attempts to participate. In this paper, we lay a foundation for individual and association inclusion practices in the AIS. First, we describe the current state of inclusion practices in the academy and in the AIS. Then, we describe findings from a survey of AIS members that measured their perceptions about inclusion and exclusion and factors that cultivated these …

Monitoring The Biochemical Changes Occuring To Human Keratinocytes Exposed To Solar Radiation By Raman Spectroscopy, Ulises Lopez-Gonzalez, Alan Casey, Hugh Byrne

Articles

Solar radiation exposure is recognised to be a significant contributor to the development of skin cancer. Monitoring the simultaneous and consecutive mechanisms of interaction could provide a greater understanding of the process of photocarcinogenesis. This work presents an analysis of the biochemical and morphological changes occurring to immortalised human epithelial keratinocyte (HaCaT) cell cultures exposed to simulated solar radiation (SSR). Cell viability was monitored with the aid of the Alamar Blue assay, morphological examination was done with haematoxylin and eosin staining (H&E) and changes to the biochemical constituents (nucleic acids and proteins) as a result of the radiation insult were …

Chemical Space Exploration Around Thieno[3,2-D]Pyrimidin-4(3h)-One Scaffold Led To A Novel Class Of Highly Active Clostridium Difficile Inhibitors, Xuwei Shao Jan 2020

Chemical Space Exploration Around Thieno[3,2-D]Pyrimidin-4(3h)-One Scaffold Led To A Novel Class Of Highly Active Clostridium Difficile Inhibitors, Xuwei Shao

Theses and Dissertations

Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is the leading cause of healthcare-associated infection in the United States. Therefore, development of novel treatments for CDI is a high priority. Toward this goal, we began in vitro screening of a structurally diverse in-house library of 67 compounds against two pathogenic C. difficile strains (ATCC BAA 1870 and ATCC 43255), which yielded a hit compound, 2-methyl-8-nitroquinazolin-4(3H)-one (2) with moderate potency (MIC = 312/156 µM). Optimization of 2 gave lead compound 6a (2-methyl-7-nitrothieno[3,2-d]pyrimidin-4(3H)-one) with improved potency (MIC = 19/38 µM), selectivity over normal gut microflora, CC50s >606 µM against mammalian cell lines, and acceptable stability in …

Benzimidazole derivatives possess a wide variety of biological activities, including anti-bacterial, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammatory activities. Development of synthetic methods to …

Continuous Salt Synthesis And Granulation Using Single Step Twin Screw Extrusion Process, Jaydip Vasoya Jan 2020

Continuous Salt Synthesis And Granulation Using Single Step Twin Screw Extrusion Process, Jaydip Vasoya

Theses and Dissertations

In the present investigation, a continuous, and novel organic solvent-free approach for the synthesis of pharmaceutical salts using the twin screw extruder (TSE) is reported. Although the method offers distinct advantages such as solvent free synthesis and short processing time over the conventional salt synthesis, the produced salts usually require further processing into granules before they can be compressed into tablets or filled into capsules, which makes the final product manufacturing non-continuous. This report, for the first time, describes a process of combining salt synthesis and granulation into a single-step using a TSE. Cinnarizine, a model poorly water-soluble weakly basic …
