A Literary Lens Into Constitutional Interpretation And A Possible Synthesis Of Natural And Positive Law: The Silmarillion, Charles Edward Andrew Lincoln Iv
A Literary Lens Into Constitutional Interpretation And A Possible Synthesis Of Natural And Positive Law: The Silmarillion, Charles Edward Andrew Lincoln Iv
Mitchell Hamline Law Journal of Public Policy and Practice
The nature of identity in the United States lies in the Constitution. Perhaps this is due to “veneration” of the document. It has also been argued that the Declaration of Independence holds a seminal role in the American identity.
The rift seems to occur with the concept of a “living constitution,” whereby the concept of an ever-evolving jurisprudence allows for an evolving interpretation of the Constitution as society changes.
This rift can be demonstrated by the world of J.R.R. Tolkien. In The Lord of the Rings and Silmarillion, the various languages of groups of Middle Earth represent and have distinct …

Q-fever is a flu-like illness caused by Coxiella burnetii (Cb), a highly infectious intracellular bacterium. There is an unmet need for a safe and effective vaccine for Q-fever. Correlates of immune protection to Cb infection are limited. We proposed that analysis by longitudinal high dimensional immune (HDI) profiling using mass cytometry combined with other measures of vaccination and protection could be used to identify novel correlates of effective vaccination and control of Cb infection. Using a vaccine-challenge model in HLA-DR transgenic mice, we demonstrated significant alterations in circulating T-cell and innate immune populations that distinguished vaccinated from naïve …

Lightgwas: A Novel Genome-Wide Association Study Procedure, Bruno Ambrozio
Dissertations
This dissertation proposes LightGWAS, a novel machine learning procedure for genome-wide association study (GWAS) based on LightGBM and k-fold cross-validation. The conducted literature review identified that the currently available GWAS implementations rely on massive manual quality control steps to address statistical issues, such as controlling for false-positive inflation and power reduction. It also showed they demand a specific GWAS method for each type of genomic dataset morphology, which consequently increases the human dependency and open margins for misleadings. LightGWAS is a potential single, resilient, autonomous and scalable solution to address such concerns. Through this research, LightGWAS was contrasted against the …

© 2019 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Histone deacetylases (HDAC) are being targeted for a number of diseases such as cancer, inflammatory disease, and neurological disorders. Within this family of 18 isozymes, HDAC4 is a prime target for glioma, one of the most aggressive brain tumors reported. Thus, the development of HDAC4 inhibitors could present a novel therapeutic route for glioma. In this work, molecular docking studies on cyclopropane hydroxamic acid derivatives identified five novel molecular interactions to the HDAC4 receptor that could be harnessed to enhance inhibitor binding. Thus, design guidelines for the optimization of potent HDAC4 …

Rates of human-induced environmental change continue increasing with human population size, potentially altering animal physiology and negatively affecting wildlife. Researchers often use glucocorticoid concentrations (hormones that can be associated with stressors) to gauge the impact of anthropogenic factors (e.g. urbanization, noise and light pollution). Yet, no general relationships between human-induced environmental change and glucocorticoids have emerged. Given the number of recent studies reporting baseline and stress-induced corticosterone (the primary glucocorticoid in birds and reptiles) concentrations worldwide, it is now possible to conduct large-scale comparative analyses to test for general associations between disturbance and baseline and stress-induced corticosterone across species. Additionally, …

Discrete Evolutionary Population Models: A New Approach, K. Mokni, Saber Elaydi, M. Ch-Chaoui, A. Eladdadi
Mathematics Faculty Research
In this paper, we apply a new approach to a special class of discrete time evolution models and establish a solid mathematical foundation to analyse them. We propose new single and multi-species evolutionary competition models using the evolutionary game theory that require a more advanced mathematical theory to handle effectively. A key feature of this new approach is to consider the discrete models as non-autonomous difference equations. Using the powerful tools and results developed in our recent work [E. D'Aniello and S. Elaydi, The structure of ω-limit sets of asymptotically non-autonomous discrete dynamical systems, Discr. Contin. Dyn. Series B. …

A Critical Analysis Of Electrospray Techniques For The Determination Of Accelerated Rates And Mechanisms Of Chemical Reactions In Droplets, G. Rovelli, M. I. Jacobs, M. D. Willis, Rebecca J. Rapf, A. M. Prophet, K. R. Wilson
Chemistry Faculty Research
Electrospray and Electrosonic Spray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (ESI-MS and ESSI-MS) have been widely used to report evidence that many chemical reactions in micro- and nano-droplets are dramatically accelerated by factors of ∼102 to 106 relative to macroscale bulk solutions. Despite electrospray's relative simplicity to both generate and detect reaction products in charged droplets using mass spectrometry, substantial complexity exists in how the electrospray process itself impacts the interpretation of the mechanism of these observed accelerated rates. ESI and ESSI are both coupled multi-phase processes, in which analytes in small charged droplets are transferred and detected as gas-phase ions with a …
The Future Of Roe V. Wade: Do Abortion Rights End When A Human's Life Begins?, Steven Andrew Jacobs
The Future Of Roe V. Wade: Do Abortion Rights End When A Human's Life Begins?, Steven Andrew Jacobs
Tennessee Law Review
While legal scholars and Supreme Court Justices on both sides of the national abortion controversy argue that Roe v. Wade was incorrectly decided, this Article accepts the Court's decision as a provisional holding that was based on the relevant societal, scientific, and legal records available to the Court in 1973. However, the stare decisis analysis outlined by the Court in Planned Parenthood v. Casey dictates that precedent can be overturned when a change in relevant facts robs a ruling of its original justification. If the Court agrees to hear a challenge to Roe, it will likely assess whether the relevant …

For Food Space: Theorizing Alternative Food Networks Beyond Alterity, Renata Blumberg, Helga Leitner, Kirsten Valentine Cadieux
Department of Nutrition and Food Studies Scholarship and Creative Works
In response to calls by scholars to deepen theoretical engagement in research on Alternative Food Networks (AFNs), in this article we critically discuss and assess major theoretical approaches deployed in the study of AFNs. After highlighting the strengths and limitations of each theoretical approach, we provide an alternative framework – which we refer to as the Geographical Political Ecology of Food Systems – that integrates the contributions that have emerged in the study of the alternative geographies of food with an understanding of capitalist processes in the food system. We do this by bringing together literature on the political ecology …

Tuskegee Syphilis Study Not America's Only Medical Scandal: Chester M. Southam, Md, Henrietta Lacks, And The Sloan-Kettering Research Scandal, Leonard F. Vernon
Journal of Health Ethics
The words “human medical experimentation” conjure up visions of Nazi medicine, which has come to exemplify the worst evils in the history of humankind. Places like Auschwitz and Dachau, where human life was cheap and test subjects plentiful were used as laboratories.
In 2010 the US government apologized to Guatemala for allowing U.S. doctors to infect Guatemalan prisoners and mental patients with syphilis 65 years earlier, while acknowledging dozens of similar experiments in the United States. These included studies that often involved making healthy people sick. such as in the Tuskegee syphilis study.
These experiments were often life threatening and …

Ethical Guidelines For The Treatment Of Patients With Suspected Or Confirmed Novel Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19), Peter A. Depergola Ii
Journal of Health Ethics
This white paper provides basic ethical guidelines for treating patients with suspected or confirmed coronavirus disease (COVID-19). It responds to the need from healthcare organizations to address the moral considerations inherent to caring for this patient population, particularly in the context of scarce resource allocation, the imposition of limits to individual freedoms, and de facto social distancing. These guidelines are not narrowly prescriptive, but recognize the need of decision makers to transform this guidance into specific decisions. Ethical decision making assumes that such judgments will be based on current scientific knowledge, that effectiveness of interventions is carefully assessed, and that …

Mentoring Faculty And Bolstering Students’ Emotional And Cognitive Interest: The Impact Of Perceived Homophily In The College Classroom, Robert J. Sidelinger, Leeanne M. Bell Mcmanus
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
For this study, expectancy violations theory was used to explore the associations among instructors’ inappropriate conversations, perceived homophily (similarity), and college students’ emotional and cognitive interest. Results found that students’ perceptions of instructor perceived homophily moderated the relationships between students’ reports of instructors’ enactment of inappropriate conversations and students’ emotional and cognitive interest. These results offer further understanding of the ways in which inappropriate conversations and perceived homophily affect perceptual outcomes in the college classroom, which can inform college faculty, administrators, and mentors. Limitations and future research directions are discussed.

Controlling Transition Metal-Catalyzed Alkyne Annulations Utilizing Polarized Ynol Ethers, Brandon L. Coles-Taylor
Controlling Transition Metal-Catalyzed Alkyne Annulations Utilizing Polarized Ynol Ethers, Brandon L. Coles-Taylor
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Transition metal-catalyzed alkyne annulations have developed into incredibly powerful synthetic tools over there the past quarter century. These reactions provide rapid access to important organic scaffolds such as indole, quinoline, isoquinoline, indene, and isocoumarin scaffolds. Transition metal mediated alkyne annulations have proven invaluable in synthetic fields, such as natural product total synthesis, by offering efficient pathways to otherwise synthetically difficult to access substrates.
Foundational works performed by chemist such as Larock, Ackermann, Satoh, and Miura have been established through relying upon the usage of symmetrical alkynes. When unsymmetrical alkynes are used in annulation processes mixtures of regioisomers are often isolated. …

Nyku: A Social Robot For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Dan Stephan Stoianovici
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The continued growth of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) around the world has spurred a growth in new therapeutic methods to increase the positive outcomes of an ASD diagnosis. It has been agreed that the early detection and intervention of ASD disorders leads to greatly increased positive outcomes for individuals living with the disorders. Among these new therapeutic methods, Robot-Assisted Therapy (RAT) has become a hot area of study. Recent works have shown that high functioning ASD children have an affinity for interacting with robots versus humans. It is proposed that this is due to a less complex set of communication …
Examining Artifacts Of The Watershed Segmentation, Emily Jo Armitage
Examining Artifacts Of The Watershed Segmentation, Emily Jo Armitage
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The watershed segmentation is an algorithm used to systematically track cell intercalary behaviors during germ band extension of the Drosophila embryo. Neighboring cells share a contracting vertical interface, called a T1, which continues contracting to a single point, a T2, and extending in the horizontal direction to create what is called a T3 interface (Fig. 1). Additionally, higher order vertices called rosettes occur when five or more cells meet at a common vertex. Simulated T2 events demonstrate that cell angle and not noise level in the image contributes to the incorrect detection of artifactual T1s in more acute angled cells …

What Happens Next? A Grounded Theory Exploration Of The Psychological Impact Of Leaving The Gang, Alana C. Liskov
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Very little research exists regarding the psychological impacts of gang membership and the mental health needs of gang members. Of the few studies that have been conducted, gang members were found to have increased rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (1.77 odds), current substance abuse (2.58 odds), oppositional defiant disorder, (1.24 odds) and conduct disorder (4.05 odds) (Harris, Elkins, Butler, Shelton, Robles, Kwok, Simpson, Young, Mayhew, Brown, & Sargent, 2013). Violent ruminative thinking, violent victimization and fear of further victimization were also significantly higher in gang members and believed to account for high levels of psychosis and anxiety disorder in gang …
Quantification Of Mitochondrial Zinc Homeostasis And Analysis Of Zinc And Polyamine-Mediated Axonal Trafficking, Dylan Hunt Fudge
Quantification Of Mitochondrial Zinc Homeostasis And Analysis Of Zinc And Polyamine-Mediated Axonal Trafficking, Dylan Hunt Fudge
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The zinc ion is an important emerging signaling molecule for biological processes. In this work we engineered improved zinc sensors based on our previously developed fluorescent sensor GZnP1 to provide sensors with a higher fluorescent readout, faster kinetics, and a superior sensitivity to zinc. We utilized these zinc sensors and further developed the sensors to answer questions pertaining to biological zinc. We showed the labile zinc concentration in the mitochondrial matrix was less than 1 pM while the labile zinc concentration in the cytosol and mitochondrial IMS were comparable (~100 pM) across four different cell lines. Using these zinc sensors …
Epochs Of Ecology: The Transition From Feudalism To Capitalism, Jacob Alexander Tucker
Epochs Of Ecology: The Transition From Feudalism To Capitalism, Jacob Alexander Tucker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The transition from feudalism to capitalism has undoubtedly been one of the most fruitful and complicated debates amongst economic historians in the 20th and 21st centuries. With the advent of global ecological collapse, there is a necessity to examine and theorize the movement from feudalism to capitalism through the lens of ecology. While in mainstream economics the environment is either entirely dismissed or nature’s role in economics remains subsidiary to the human economy, in the field of Marxian economics, human’s interacting through nature is at the core of the entire theory. For that reason, this thesis takes earnestly Marx’s contributions …
Fluid Dynamics Characterization Of Transcatheter Aortic Valves, Mohammed Barakat
Fluid Dynamics Characterization Of Transcatheter Aortic Valves, Mohammed Barakat
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Aortic stenosis due to degenerative calcific aortic valvular disease is the most reason for aortic valve replacement in developed countries. Aortic stenosis affects up to 7% of the world population, and current clinical data indicate that the number of the affected people could be triple by 2050, due to population ageing and health lifestyle. Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) was introduced as a minimal invasive treatment of severe aortic stenosis. Even though surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) is considered the golden standard treatment for severe aortic stenosis patients, TAVR showed equivalent or even superior outcome compare to SAVR. Currently, transcatheter …
Cellular And Developmental Insights Into The Early Evolution Of Muscle, Jeffrey J. Colgren
Cellular And Developmental Insights Into The Early Evolution Of Muscle, Jeffrey J. Colgren
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Whereas a great deal has been learned about the molecular underpinnings of morphological evolution in animals, much less is known about the origin of novel cell and tissue types. During the time in which the earliest animal lineages were diversifying, fundamental cell and tissue types, such as muscles, arose. Sponges are one of two animal lineages that lack muscles, yet they undergo coordinated full body contractions. Whereas the signaling processes have been studied, the physical mechanisms of contraction are completely uncharacterized. The main purpose of this work is to understand the primary contractile tissue of the sponge Ephydatia muelleri, …
