School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

The research question and addressed in this study was: What are three of the most important components of Chinese culture and how do they influence their education system? Key influences included Jin Li, G. Hofstede and H.C. Triandis. This topic was explored through a combination of personal experiences, reflections of those experiences, extensive online research and conversations with former and current EFL/ESL teachers who have taught, and in some cases are still currently teaching, in Mainland China. The three components of Chinese culture this study focuses on are the concept of face, collectivism and Confucianism. All three components are examined …

A Survey Of Dairy-Goat Keeping In Zanzibar, Tiffanie Stone, Charles A. Francis, L. O. Eik Jul 2020

A Survey Of Dairy-Goat Keeping In Zanzibar, Tiffanie Stone, Charles A. Francis, L. O. Eik

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Dairy goats with improved genetics for milk production were recently introduced onto small-scale farms in Zanzibar through governmental and non-governmental projects. These projects were meant to support small-scale farmers by improving both income and household nutrition through milk production. No follow up had been conducted to understand what effects dairy goat keeping had on these small-scale farms, or how they could be improved. A survey of 193 dairy goat farmers in Zanzibar was conducted, including 30% and 60% of all dairy goat farmers on Unguja and Pemba, the two largest islands, respectively. The objective was to understand the impact keeping …

Geneseo Authors

Open Pedagogy Approaches: Faculty, Library, and Student Collaborations is a collection of case studies from higher education institutions across the United States. An open educational resource (OER) in its own right, it offers a diverse compilation of OER and open pedagogy projects grounded in faculty, library, and student collaborations. Open Pedagogy Approaches provides ideas, practical tips, and inspiration for educators willing to explore the power of open, whether that involves a small innovation or a large-scale initiative.

Particularly during this pandemic, as libraries struggle against publisher limitations to offer traditional print texts in e-format, libraries are a natural partner in …

Existence Of Traveling Wave Solutions Of A Deterministic Vector-Host Epidemic Model With Direct Transmission, Dawit Denu, Sedar Ngoma, Rachidi B. Salako Jul 2020

Existence Of Traveling Wave Solutions Of A Deterministic Vector-Host Epidemic Model With Direct Transmission, Dawit Denu, Sedar Ngoma, Rachidi B. Salako

Mathematics

We consider an epidemic model with direct transmission given by a system of nonlinear partial differential equations and study the existence of traveling wave solutions. When the basic reproductive number of the considered model is less than one, we show that there is no nontrivial traveling wave solution. On the other hand, when the basic reproductive number is greater than one, we prove that there is a minimum wave speed c such that the system has a traveling wave solution with speed c connecting both equilibrium points for any c ≥ c. Moreover, under suitable assumption on the diffusion …

The Health And Legal Implications Of Early Screening For Developmental Disabilities, Jennifer Safstrom, Jacqueline Safstrom Jul 2020

The Health And Legal Implications Of Early Screening For Developmental Disabilities, Jennifer Safstrom, Jacqueline Safstrom

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Child development is a multifaceted process and there are certain milestones to reach that are imperative for healthy, timely growth and development.' Developmental monitoring, screening, and testing can aid in the identification, examination, and follow-up of a child's progress. However, there are a plethora of barriers which inhibit a child's ability to access and receive adequate, quality care. These broader factors, or social determinants of health, can lead to an underutilization of preventive health services, causing a delay in early identification and intervention for children. This can have serious, adverse repercussions, because targeting interventions among children from birth to five …

The Machine As Author, Daniel J. Gervais Jul 2020

The Machine As Author, Daniel J. Gervais

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Machines are increasingly good at emulating humans and laying siege to what has been a strictly human outpost: intellectual creativity.

At this juncture, we cannot know with certainty how high machines will reach on the creativity ladder when compared to, or measured against, their human counterparts, but we do know this. They are far enough already to force us to ask a genuinely hard and complex question, one that intellectual property (“IP”) scholars and courts will need to answer soon; namely, whether copyrights should be granted to productions made not by humans but by machines.

This Article’s specific objective is …

Bioinformatic Analysis Of The Gut Microbiota Derived From The Oil Fly Helaeomyia Petrolei From The La Brea Tar Pits, Brian A. Dillard Jul 2020

Bioinformatic Analysis Of The Gut Microbiota Derived From The Oil Fly Helaeomyia Petrolei From The La Brea Tar Pits, Brian A. Dillard

School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In the early 1930s, Thorpe a prominent entomologist, called for more research into Helaeomyia petrolei larva. These larvae live in the Californian La Brea tar pits where they are exposed to large amounts of polyaromatic hydrocarbons. Molecules like anthracene, phenanthrene, and toluene which should be highly toxic to both the oil fly larvae and its enteric bacteria. This extremophilic gut microbiome has yet to be studied using current day next gen sequencing and bioinformatic techniques. In fact, since Thorpe’s work in the 1930s, there have been only two publications characterizing the oil fly larvae. Both in the early 2000s by …

The Impact Of Social Media On Adolescent Mental Health, Nicole J. Critchfield Jul 2020

The Impact Of Social Media On Adolescent Mental Health, Nicole J. Critchfield

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

The number of adolescents reporting mental health issues such as anxiety and depression has dramatically increased in the last two decades. As this trend coincides with the increase in social media use by adolescents, many researchers have studied the correlation between the two. This literature review examines the correlation along with the pros and cons of adolescent social media use outside and inside the classroom. Most recently, research is showing how social media is used impacts the state of an adolescent’s mental health rather than the use of social media in general. Teachers and schools can help students learn how …

The Effects Of Social-Emotional Learning At The Secondary Level, Karmen Keltner

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

This literature review aims to examine social-emotional learning in schools, and more specifically, at the secondary level. The review explains the importance of SEL at the secondary level and its continuation from preschool through high school. Evidence-based secondary SEL programs are presented, and research, including several meta-analyses, are shared that outline the benefits and disadvantages of social-emotional learning programs. Mandated SEL standards at the federal and state levels are covered, as well as policies and laws that enforce and support SEL. An analysis of the published literature on SEL programs at the secondary level suggests they lead to improved academics, …

Genome Editing 2020: Ethics And Human Rights In Germline Editing In Humans And Gene Drives In Mosquitoes, George J. Annas

Faculty Scholarship

The moon landing, now more than a half century in the past, has turned out to be the culmination of human space travel, rather than its beginning. Genetic engineering, especially applications of CRISPR, now presents the most publicly discussed engineering challenges—and not just technical, but ethical as well. In this article, I will use the two most controversial genomic engineering applications to help identify the ethics and human rights implications of these research projects. Each of these techniques directly modifies the mechanisms of evolution, threatens to alter our views of ourselves as humans and our planet as our home, and …

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Drought, ozone (O3), and nitrogen deposition (N) alter foliar pigments and tree crown structure that may be remotely detectable. Remote sensing tools are needed that pre-emptively identify trees susceptible to environmental stresses could inform forest managers in advance of tree mortality risk. Jeffrey pine, a component of the economically important and widespread western yellow pine in North America was investigated in the southern Sierra Nevada. Transpiration of mature trees differed by 20% between microsites with adequate (mesic (M)) vs. limited (xeric (X)) water availability as described in a previous study. In this study, in-the-crown morphological traits (needle chlorosis, …

Racial Ideology Between Fascist Italy And Nazi Germany: Julius Evola And The Aryan Myth, 1933–43, Peter Staudenmaier Jul 2020

Racial Ideology Between Fascist Italy And Nazi Germany: Julius Evola And The Aryan Myth, 1933–43, Peter Staudenmaier

History Faculty Research and Publications

One of the troublesome factors in the Rome–Berlin Axis before and during the Second World War centered on disagreements over racial ideology and corresponding antisemitic policies. A common image sees Fascist Italy as a reluctant partner on racial matters, largely dominated by its more powerful Nazi ally. This article offers a contrasting assessment, tracing the efforts by Italian theorist Julius Evola to cultivate a closer rapport between Italian and German variants of racism as part of a campaign by committed antisemites to strengthen the bonds uniting the fascist and Nazi cause. Evola's spiritual form of racism, based on a distinctive …

Using Genetic Diversity To Differentiate Mosquito Populations, Rachel Christine Malampy Jul 2020

Using Genetic Diversity To Differentiate Mosquito Populations, Rachel Christine Malampy

Theses and Dissertations

Experiment 1: Little is known about Aedes aegypti females sharing oviposition sites. We examined four different oviposition sites in McAllen, TX. A mitochondrial gene was used to analyze the variation within the oviposition site to understand how many egg-laying females are sharing oviposition sites. These results will aid in the understanding of Aedes. aegypti oviposition behavior and contribute to more effective mosquito control techniques.

Experiment 2: Mosquito flight patterns and movement from habitat to habitat can drastically influence the spread of diseases. The anthropophilic Aedes aegypti mosquito has historically been identified as having a very limited flight range. Studies also …

Prelimbic Input To Basolateral Amygdala Facilitates The Acquisition Of Trace Cued Fear Memory Under Weak Training Conditions, Adam Kirry, Robert C. Twining, Marieke R. Gilmartin

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The ability to predict the occurrence of an aversive outcome based on available cues requires associative learning and plastic changes in the amygdala. When the predictive cue and aversive shock outcome are separated in time as in trace fear conditioning, additional circuitry is needed, including the prelimbic (PL) area of the prefrontal cortex. We have previously shown that neuronal firing in the PL during the trace interval separating the cue and shock is required for trace cued fear memory formation, but whether this mnemonic signal is conveyed to the amygdala is unknown. Here we show in males that silencing PL …

Mean Arterial Pressure In Acute Ischemic Stroke Study, Mary Angela Grove Jul 2020

Mean Arterial Pressure In Acute Ischemic Stroke Study, Mary Angela Grove

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Background. There is little, if any, evidence available on the validation of blood pressure (BP) measurements obtained in the acute care setting. Despite this, acute stroke practitioners trust and rely on non-invasive blood pressure (NIBP) devices to guide acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients’ treatment. Although systolic blood pressure (SBP) has been found to be the most unreliable measurement displayed on NIBP devices, treatment decisions for AIS are based on them. Today, 25 years after the FDA’s approval of alteplase, practitioners continue to use BP parameters of 185/110 and 180/105 to guide the initiation of alteplase bolus and infusion, although the …
