Learning By Doing: Departmental-Wide Reflection On Incorporating Experiential-Learning Across The Curriculum, Tamara Lynn Apr 2020

Learning By Doing: Departmental-Wide Reflection On Incorporating Experiential-Learning Across The Curriculum, Tamara Lynn

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Experiential-learning (EL), which captures a broad range of pedagogies, is a process where students learn by connecting experience to curriculum. More simply, EL provides students opportunities to learn by doing. Guided reflection, in conjunction with the experience, bridges the activity with course learning outcomes. Faculty teaching in the Department of Criminal Justice at FHSU made EL and the process of reflection a priority, incorporating pedagogies that include, but not limited to, service-learning, problem-based learning, and community-based research. This study demonstrates three innovative approaches to experiential-learning, including reflection, facilitated in criminal justice courses.

A City On The Front Lines Of An Epidemic: The Opioid Crisis In Las Vegas, Elia Del Carmen Solano-Patricio

Calvert Undergraduate Research Awards

Advanced Undergraduate Winner

While addiction to opioids kills more Americans every year, the purpose of this report is to assess the extent of the problem in the Las Vegas metropolitan area, and to propound ways in which local policy can help. A geospatial analysis of opioid demand nationally, regionally, and locally explains how the epidemic is diffusing, where divides exist in terms of access to treatment, and the differential effects of opioids driving this crisis. By tracking opioid-related prescriptions, hospital admissions, and deaths, the results show that opioid demand in the Las Vegas metro has decreased but remains well above …

Out Of The Archives And Into The Streets: Teaching With Primary Sources To Cultivate Civic Engagement, Jen Hoyer Apr 2020

Out Of The Archives And Into The Streets: Teaching With Primary Sources To Cultivate Civic Engagement, Jen Hoyer

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

This article examines whether teaching with primary sources can cultivate civic engagement by investigating the competencies involved in developing student civic engagement and aligning these with outcomes from teaching with primary sources. Using three examples from Brooklyn Connections, a primary source-based education outreach program that offers a free standards-based and curriculum-aligned school partnership program for grades four through twelve, this case study illustrates the potential for using primary sources to cultivate skills, knowledge, and student agency. Through assessment of these examples in teaching with primary sources using protocols developed for evaluation of programs that focus on developing civic engagement, the …

Quo Vadis Hukuman Pidana Kebiri Kimia Bagi Pelaku Kejahatan Seksual Pada Anak Di Indonesia, Ainunnisa Rezky Asokawati

Journal of Islamic Law Studies

Sexual assault committed against children become one of the polemics in the society. The government as the state protector accommodates the polemic by making the law in form of Law Number 17 of 2016 concerning the Stipulation of Government Regulation in place of Law Number 1 of 2016 concerning Second Amendment to Law Number 23 of 2002 concerning Child Protection. The regulation accommodated the society’s need by arranging punishment for the perpetrators of sexual assault affecting children cases. Article 81 of Law Number 35 of 2014 in the form of first amendment to the Child Protection Law concerning criminal threats …

Structuring The Debate About Research Ethics In The Psychology And Law Field: An International Perspective, Alfred Allan Apr 2020

Structuring The Debate About Research Ethics In The Psychology And Law Field: An International Perspective, Alfred Allan

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Forensic psychologists’ role is well established, and they are rightly well regulated because their decisions and behaviour can have a significant impact on people’s rights and interests. Their ethical integrity, however, partly hinges on the psycholegal research products (data, methods and instruments) that they and others use. The ethical regulation of researchers who produce products and their research processes is, however, fragmented, limited and narrow and largely focuses on domestic research. Relatively few scholars have examined the regulation of psycholegal research or commented on the ethical implications of recent court decisions. The purpose of this paper is to start a …

The Relationship Between Age And Gender And Its Effect On Intergenerational Patterns Of Incarceration, Sominishia Wright Apr 2020

The Relationship Between Age And Gender And Its Effect On Intergenerational Patterns Of Incarceration, Sominishia Wright

Virginias Collegiate Honors Council Conference

Mass incarceration has been a dominant concern within the criminal justice system since the 1970s. Criminologists and other researchers have looked at the effects crime has on the steadily increasing incarceration rate but to little avail. Intergenerational patterns of incarceration further oppress minority and low-income communities. Although researchers have been able to identify some forms of causation, much more research needs to be done to understand why certain people, according to race, age, gender, and socioeconomic status, are more likely to be incarcerated, arrested, and convicted than others. Current research identifies deviant parents and paternal incarceration as factors that increase …

Schwalbe, But Make It Sesame Street: Advocating For Children’S Sociological Education On Race And Ethnicity, Sonia Mathews Apr 2020

Schwalbe, But Make It Sesame Street: Advocating For Children’S Sociological Education On Race And Ethnicity, Sonia Mathews

Honors Scholars Collaborative Projects

In this thesis, I aim to fill a hole in the existing discussion surrounding how we deal with social issues, specifically issues of race, when it comes to children. While there is ample sociological theory and legitimate research proving that children both experience and affect social constructions like race and ethnicity, this is not evident in both the way we teach children about social issues and what we teach them about the social world they are a part of. It is crucial to acknowledge and consider that once we recognize that children have these abilities to impact the social world, …

The Cycle Of Failing Reform: How Mentally Ill Detainees Continue To Suffer Unconstitutional Wait Times In Colorado, Grace Gonzalez, Michael Campbell Apr 2020

The Cycle Of Failing Reform: How Mentally Ill Detainees Continue To Suffer Unconstitutional Wait Times In Colorado, Grace Gonzalez, Michael Campbell

DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive

This research examines the state of Colorado’s failing criminal justice system, particularly as it pertains to mentally ill detainees. For several years, mentally ill detainees in Colorado have been forced to wait for extensive amounts of time to receive court-ordered evaluations to determine mental competency before trial. The state’s continued failure to administer these evaluations in a timely manner has led to a series of complaints and lawsuits against the state. Unfortunately, these lawsuits have ultimately done little to create lasting reform. The state has managed to temporarily mitigate the problem as complaints of unconstitutional wait times arise, but it …

Pretrial And Error: The Use Of Statements Inadmissible At Trial In Preliminary Proceedings, Erin Hughes Apr 2020

Pretrial And Error: The Use Of Statements Inadmissible At Trial In Preliminary Proceedings, Erin Hughes

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy Sidebar

This Note argues that a “criminal case,” as provided by the Fifth Amendment, begins with the initiation of adversarial judicial criminal proceedings, whether that commencement occurs through a formal charge, a preliminary hearing, indictment, information, or arraignment. A broad understanding of the Fifth Amendment’s scope aligns with the Second, Seventh, Ninth and Tenth Circuits’ analysis. In particular, this Note endorses the in-depth analysis provided by the Tenth Circuit in its determination that a “criminal case” under the Fifth Amendment includes preliminary proceedings. This Note further offers an analysis of past Supreme Court precedent as well as policy rationales that support …

Informing Sexual Assault Prevention With Student-Athletes: Measuring Bystander Intentions And Awareness Of School Policies And Resources, Lorin Tredinnick Apr 2020

Informing Sexual Assault Prevention With Student-Athletes: Measuring Bystander Intentions And Awareness Of School Policies And Resources, Lorin Tredinnick

Doctoral Dissertations

Student-athletes have been identified as an at-risk population for sexual assault victimization and perpetration. While sexual assault prevention has been effective in increasing student-athlete awareness and response to sexual assault, student-athletes are less likely to see the importance of sexual assault prevention compared to non-athletes. This dissertation seeks to understand student-athlete knowledge and attitudes toward sexual assault prevention. Using the three-article dissertation format, this research is divided into three empirical articles that examine the following: student-athlete barriers to respond to post-sexual assault as prosocial bystanders; student-athlete perceptions of the campus climate and their awareness of sexual assault policies and resources; …

Female Combatants And The Post-Conflict Process In Sierra Leone, Laura C. Cullen Apr 2020

Female Combatants And The Post-Conflict Process In Sierra Leone, Laura C. Cullen

Journal of International Women's Studies

Women and girls had a specific and gendered experience of the civil war in Sierra Leone. They filled the role of combatants, ‘bush wives’, child soldiers, and sexual slaves. As a result of these roles, women are often described as having dual identities of both perpetrators and victims of violence. This duality resulted in the complex question of how to help these women both reintegrate into society and also address the crimes which they are alleged to have committed during the war. In this paper, I argue that these women and girls should be treated as victims due to the …

The Importance Of Narrative: Moving Towards Sociocultural Understandings Of Trauma-Informed Praxis, Noah Golden Apr 2020

The Importance Of Narrative: Moving Towards Sociocultural Understandings Of Trauma-Informed Praxis, Noah Golden

Occasional Paper Series

Dominant framings of trauma-informed pedagogy are currently grounded in a purely biomedical understanding of trauma, often locating ‘problems’ to be solved in individual students or communities, and engendering ‘solutions’ that focus on discourses of self-regulation and control. While these framings are slowly giving way to broader environmental understandings of trauma and marginalized youth, a deeper understanding of ecologies of privilege, disposession, and relationships to/with trauma is needed to understand the role(s) that schooling might play in mitigating traumatic experiences and their effects on young people. In particular, many students of color who are working-class or experiencing poverty must navigate racialized, …

Addressing The Need For An Alternative Education Collaborative In Nonmetropolitan School Districts, Trina Pettit Apr 2020

Addressing The Need For An Alternative Education Collaborative In Nonmetropolitan School Districts, Trina Pettit

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research

Through both federal and state educational legislation, there have been efforts to increase the accountability of schools in meeting the educational needs of all students and increasing the nation's graduation rates. States and districts across the nation have responded differently to these laws. As one pattern, there has been a rise in alternative schools and programs developed to address the educational needs of students who have not been having success with the traditional school model. Even as alternative schooling becomes more common, there is limited guidance in establishing these programs and limited professional development designed specifically for those teaching or …

Saving The United States From Lurching To Another Sentencing Crisis: Taking Proportionaltiy Seriously And Implementing Fair Fixed Penalties, Sandeep Gopalan Apr 2020

Saving The United States From Lurching To Another Sentencing Crisis: Taking Proportionaltiy Seriously And Implementing Fair Fixed Penalties, Sandeep Gopalan

Journal of Legislation (University of Notre Dame)

Unabated tough-on-crime policies in the United States for the past two decades in response to a crime problem have now produced another crisis: too many prisoners. Prison gates are currently literally being opened to release prisoners in a bid to ameliorate the unsustainable cost of detaining more than two million Americans. More than 40,000 drug offenders may be released early from prison pursuant to retrospective sentence reductions which have been implemented for no greater reason than the prison walls are crumbling from overuse. Sentencing is the sharp end of the criminal law. It is the domain where the State acts …

Violent Crime And Youth Resilience, William Donnelly Apr 2020

Violent Crime And Youth Resilience, William Donnelly

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

This study investigated the relationship between violent crime, future expectations and beliefs about aggression, moderated by perceptions of neighborhood cohesion and gender on Black and Latinx adolescents residing in high risk communities. Federal crime data based on zip codes were used. It was hypothesized that youth exposed to higher rates of violent crime would experience lower future expectations and higher beliefs about aggression and that youth with positive perceptions of neighborhood cohesion would experience a less salient relationship between violent crime, aggressive beliefs, and future expectations. The results did not support the hypotheses, as there were no main effects.

The Relation Of Authoritative School Climate With Emotion Regulation And Social Competence In High School Adolescents, Grace Ann Fitzgibbons Apr 2020

The Relation Of Authoritative School Climate With Emotion Regulation And Social Competence In High School Adolescents, Grace Ann Fitzgibbons

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Over the years, school disciplinary approaches have been largely punitive, with increased suspensions and expulsions for minor disruptive behaviors stemming from a zero-tolerance culture (Smith, 2015). One alternative to this style of discipline, is authoritative school climate. Its emphasis of structure and support has shown positive effects academically and behaviorally, but it is less clear how it affects emotional and interpersonal outcomes for youth (Cornell et al., 2016). The current study expands upon these positive influences of authoritative school climate and how it can ultimately affect emotion regulation and socialization in adolescents. Participants completed questionnaires, such as the Discipline Structure …
