The Relationship Between Traumatic Brain Injuries, Impulsivity, And Crime, Brian Ramanauskas May 2020

The Relationship Between Traumatic Brain Injuries, Impulsivity, And Crime, Brian Ramanauskas

Student Theses

The rate of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are increasing each year, impacting an estimated 1.4 million Americans. After further investigation, researchers have concluded that 8.5% of the general public sustains at least one TBI, whereas this number ranges from 25% to 87% in criminal populations. In the literature, impulsivity is frequently described as poorly conceived, prematurely expressed, or inappropriate behaviors. Additionally, poor impulse control has been shown to significantly impact the likelihood of criminal activity, increasing the rate of recidivism. The current study examined an archival dataset of 95 incarcerated individuals from a private correctional facility in a large mid-Atlantic …

Protocol: Protocol For Corporate Crime Deterrence: An Updated Systematic Review, Natalie Schell-Busey, Melissa Rorie, Sally S. Simpson

Criminal Justice Faculty Research

This is the protocol for an updated Campbell review on corporate crime deterrence. Our overall objective is to identify and synthesize the extant empirical literature on formal legal and administrative prevention and control - that is, the actions and programs of government law enforcement agencies, legislative bodies, and regulatory agencies within a specific focus, as further discussed in this study. This review will consider all types of legal and regulatory practices as long as corporate crime prevention is part of the outcome. Other outcomes and information, if relevant, will also be collected.

Delinquency In The Caribbean: Stakeholder Perceptions Of Root Causes, Laura Nolterieke May 2020

Delinquency In The Caribbean: Stakeholder Perceptions Of Root Causes, Laura Nolterieke

Honors Theses

There is a gap in the research on juvenile delinquency within the Caribbean context. As countries such as St. Lucia, Guyana, St. Kitts, and Nevis have growing delinquency and crime rates, there is a need to bridge this gap in the literature. This research sought to examine the main causes of juvenile delinquency within St. Lucia, Guyana, St. Kitts, and Nevis, as described by juvenile justice stakeholders, such as probation officers, prosecutors, and judges, within their respective countries. Through the use of grounded theory, the data were coded and analyzed using a constant comparison method. From these data, six themes …

Expressive Arts Therapy In Performance As Trauma Work For Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities: A Community Engagement Project, Lucy Farmer May 2020

Expressive Arts Therapy In Performance As Trauma Work For Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities: A Community Engagement Project, Lucy Farmer

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

People diagnosed with an intellectual disability (ID) are at a substantially higher risk of experiencing trauma than typically abled individuals. In addition, the nature of ID makes it especially difficult to cope and access treatment. The goal of this research was to examine how expressive arts therapy can support treating this population for trauma. Information was gathered on Trauma-Informed Care, Psychodrama, Drama Therapy, Interactive Behavioral Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, and The Storytelling Method. This investigation led to a community engagement project between August 2019-February 2020 that involved the researcher meeting one-on-one with nine individuals diagnosed with ID. A …

Unlocking Recovery: A Role-Informed Drama Therapy Method For Adults With Addictions, Grace Rossman May 2020

Unlocking Recovery: A Role-Informed Drama Therapy Method For Adults With Addictions, Grace Rossman

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This Capstone Thesis Project discusses the creation and implementation of a drama therapy method with adults receiving treatment for substance use disorders at an intensive outpatient level of care. Disidentifying from the role of Addict proves a difficult task when this identity is reinforced by widespread social stigma, permanent changes to the brain’s reward system, and a system of criminalization resulting in financial and political disenfranchisement. A drama therapy framework, Robert Landy’s Role Theory, and a trauma treatment framework, Janina Fisher’s Trauma-Informed Stabilization Treatment, were used as grounding theories from which to create a method intended to help clients with …

Addiction, Mental Health, Systemic Racism, And Expressive Arts Therapy: A Review Of The Literature Capstone Thesis, Melanie Dunbar May 2020

Addiction, Mental Health, Systemic Racism, And Expressive Arts Therapy: A Review Of The Literature Capstone Thesis, Melanie Dunbar

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Systemic racism has plagued people of color for many years. The thought of advancing in this world has been cut down by systems put in place to advance the White agenda. One of those systems is the health care system. Addiction and mental health care are areas where identifying as a person of color can be a hinderance when seeking treatment. Addiction and mental health have also been stigmatized, and treatment for people of color is available but lacks affordability. This literature review addresses the layers of what systemic racism is and how it has affected the lives of multicultural …

Factors Contributing To Young Men Of Color Dropping Out Of High School And Experiencing Incarceration: What Influenced Their Decision To Return To School And Graduate?, Justina C. Montoya

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Dropping out of high school is an issue that disproportionately affects the lives of young men of color in New Mexico and across the country. While there are multiple reasons that impact a student's decision to drop out of school, it is often compounded by other factors that also lead to incarceration.

This study focused on young men of color who dropped out of school, experienced incarceration, and through this process made the decision to return to school and earn a high school diploma. This study was performed at a charter high school in a southwestern state. The mission of …

Investigating Sexual Fantasy And Sexual Behavior In Adolescent Offenders, Hayley Lauren Tews May 2020

Investigating Sexual Fantasy And Sexual Behavior In Adolescent Offenders, Hayley Lauren Tews

Dissertations and Theses

Juvenile sexual offenders (SOs) have been found to account for a significant proportion of sexual offenses. A critical gap has been identified in our knowledge regarding the role of sexual fantasy and sexual behavior in juvenile sexual offending, even though these variables have been identified as an important treatment target for this population. Specifically, it is not clear if SOs differ significantly from juvenile non-sexual offenders (NSOs) in their sexual fantasies and sexual behavior and as such, if reports of fantasies and past sexual behaviors should be used as a target for sex offender specific treatment. This study explored differences …

Breaking The Cycle: How Nevada Can Effectuate Meaningful Criminal Justice Reform, Scott Cooper, Scott Whitworth May 2020

Breaking The Cycle: How Nevada Can Effectuate Meaningful Criminal Justice Reform, Scott Cooper, Scott Whitworth

Nevada Law Journal Forum

Why does society punish criminals? This paper examines what Nevada is attempting to accomplish through enacting and enforcing its criminal laws. We examine the current state of, as well as the challenges facing, Nevada’s criminal justice system. Additionally, we identify and propose certain solutions to reduce both recidivism and the financial burden that incarceration imposes on the state by looking to best practices in other states, as well as certain mechanisms and provisions that were, for one reason or another, removed from Nevada Assembly Bill 236.

Designing A Non Conventional Philosophy Of Punishment: Rehabilitation And Reintegration Of Young Offenders, Paola Ortiz May 2020

Designing A Non Conventional Philosophy Of Punishment: Rehabilitation And Reintegration Of Young Offenders, Paola Ortiz

Hospitality Design Graduate Student Capstones

Architecture is one of the few disciplines that sends a silent message to everyone walking into any space. Design is crucial to create specific environments, but when it comes to a prison design, the concept is restricted. Design for prisons, jails, and juvenile corrections are more focused on cost and security, than humanity and hospitality related principles. Access to natural light is a luxury, windows are expensive, and the standardized colors used on their walls are far too depressing.

Modeling And Simulation For Prevention And Control Of Drug Abuse And Drug-Related Crime Based On System Dynamics, Liu Feng May 2020

Modeling And Simulation For Prevention And Control Of Drug Abuse And Drug-Related Crime Based On System Dynamics, Liu Feng

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In the existing drug abuse dynamics models, the drug users are assumed to be permanent immune to drugs after rehabilitation and the possibility of the recovery drug users being susceptible again is neglected. To solve the problem, through the system dynamics (SD) method, the evolution process of the drug-related crowds is analyzed, and a relevant model based on the transient immunity is constructed. The trends of the drug abuse and drug-related crime are predicted by the simulation experiments, and the sensitivity analysis indicates that the rate of contact and exposure to drugs is the most sensitive factor of the …

Growing Community: Planting Justice, Prisoner Reintegration And Community Gardening, Ian Sharp May 2020

Growing Community: Planting Justice, Prisoner Reintegration And Community Gardening, Ian Sharp

Master's Theses

As community gardens become more prevalent across the country, do they have more to offer than ensuring communities have access to fresh produce? While a vital part of their mission, some grassroots and nonprofit organizations see gardening as an avenue to counteract and work against systems of food and social inequality. Planting Justice, a grassroots organization located in Oakland, use gardening as a tool for reintegrating prisoners back into the community, and ensure these ex-offenders do not return to prison. Planting Justice also engages with the forces of gentrification, working to coopt the systems of divestment and inequality to create …

Sports Narratives And The Examination Of Athlete Activists In The Field Of Sports, Sharon Singh May 2020

Sports Narratives And The Examination Of Athlete Activists In The Field Of Sports, Sharon Singh

Master's Theses

ABSTRACT

Building on the scholarship of Schmidt, Frederick, Pegoraro, and Spencer (2018), the purpose of this study was to explore the narratives related to Colin Kaepernick’s and Megan Rapinoe’s athlete activism. This research was generated by conducting a thematic inductive analysis of 927 Twitter comments collected from the Twitter feeds of Kaepernick and Rapinoe during the time period of August 14th, 2016 to October 18th, 2016. The purpose of this analysis was to understand (a) how an athlete's right to protest can result in a Anti-American narrative (b) the language that characterized the public sentiment toward Kaepernick and Rapinoe (c) …

Deservingness In Welfare Programs: Connecting Unconditional Cash Transfers And Homelessness, Josh Steinberger May 2020

Deservingness In Welfare Programs: Connecting Unconditional Cash Transfers And Homelessness, Josh Steinberger

Master's Theses

To combat conditions of poverty, government and non-profit institutions facilitate welfare programs that target conditions such as health, food, education, or income. Programs that offer income assistance in the form of cash transfers communicate political and cultural attitudes about who is deserving of aid, and who is not deserving. The more spending freedoms cash transfer programs offer their beneficiaries, the more strictly they target populations that are considered worthy of assistance. A review of cash transfer programs reveals that people experiencing homelessness are culturally viewed as the most undeserving of government assistance. Unhoused people are routinely excluded from welfare programs …

Maintaining Natural Recovery From Prescription Opioid Use Disorder, Christina Drymon May 2020

Maintaining Natural Recovery From Prescription Opioid Use Disorder, Christina Drymon

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Prescription opioid use disorder (POUD) has been steadily rising in the United States since 1999 and is often accompanied by increases in heroin and synthetic opioid use, overdose deaths, and other adverse public health outcomes. Women in particular are at greater risk of developing POUD and associated outcomes. Even though high rates of mortality and morbidity are common among those with POUD, recovery is possible with nearly half of all individuals with POUD recovering naturally (i. e. , without formal or informal treatment). The natural recovery process from POUD has received little empirical attention. Using a grounded theory approach, semi-structured …

Healing Lgbtq+ Juvenile Youth Of Color Through Indigenous Practices, Jennifer Alvarez May 2020

Healing Lgbtq+ Juvenile Youth Of Color Through Indigenous Practices, Jennifer Alvarez

Master's Theses

My goal for this study was to explore the experiences of queer youth of color who have been in the juvenile justice system in relation to their mental health/wellness. Through semistructured interviews, the seven participants of this study have shared their testimonio of coming out, being involved in the juvenile justice system and having to engage with mental health services, I explore how queer individuals are mistreated and are placed on temporary methods of healing from their trauma. Utilizing the frameworks of Testimonios, Critical Race Theory and Critical Pedagogy, I bring forward the experiences that queer youth of color in …

The Beehive: A Counseling Group For Children Who Have Endured Out Of Home Placement, Britni Joubert May 2020

The Beehive: A Counseling Group For Children Who Have Endured Out Of Home Placement, Britni Joubert

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

Within the United States, each year there are 428,000 children in foster care and 135,000 children who are adopted (Adoption Network, 2016). This is a difficult population to treat due to social, emotional, and behavioral deficits as a result of early abuse and neglect. The research identifies an increase of mental health symptoms and emotional and behavioral difficulties. Complex trauma occurs frequently within this population which increase the difficulty in treating mental health symptoms. As a result, treatment approached need to be tailored to the client’s unique background and needs. There is a gap in the research regarding the effects …

School Violence Threat Assessment: Professional Development Training For K-12 Educators, Christopher J. Potter May 2020

School Violence Threat Assessment: Professional Development Training For K-12 Educators, Christopher J. Potter

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

While threats of violence are relatively common in U.S. K-12 schools, the likelihood of a threat being carried out is very low. School leaders must take all threats of school violence seriously but must also have evidence-informed means to discern less-serious, transient threats from more serious, substantive ones. School violence threat assessment training is a vital professional development tool, to ensure safer schools while avoiding unnecessary labeling of students or overly harsh consequences through disciplinary over-reaction. This manual supplements an abbreviated professional development training presentation on school violence threat assessment based on research and models developed by Dr. Dewey Cornell, …
